I mean, nastiness shouldn't be normalised.

Not from anyone no

@Houseman That's not so applicable to trans people though, unless they're still in the closet. Unless they pass well, every time they go out their front door there's the chance that some self-appointed gender nazi will insult, ridicule, or physically assault them. Or at least give them nasty looks. This happens even in regions that are relatively enlightened, with a strong LGBTQ+ presence.

user245382
Sometimes the external shield set up by your environment (CoC, office etiquette) will not prevent nastiness from getting through and you have to fall back on your internal shield. Will your internal shield be strong enough to take it?

user245382
@PM2Ring I'm not sure what your point is, could you elaborate?

BTW @JourneymanGeek I really like your answer to that "brigading" question. Very smoothly played.

6:09 PM
@Houseman You said: It seems that a generation of people suddenly appeared on the internet without having the privilege of this experience And I'm saying that's irrelevant because trans people get to experience being harrassed by complete strangers IRL, not just online. What to speak of disapproval etc from family members.
Years ago (on Fidonet) one trans woman told me that when she came out to her siblings & their partners, they were aghast (their parents had tragically died a couple of years earlier, in a car accident). After she transitioned, her family forbade her from calling or visiting them, and told her nieces & nephews that their uncle had been killed in a plane crash. That sort of stuff hurts like hell, and you never fully recover from it.

@Shog9 You do realize almost every major religion does that? That said it puts some boxes around the who is eligible for free blackberries
@Houseman Zero Tolerance happened. Basically where kids used to get into fights or all sorts of things and thus would have to deal with it. Now zero tolerance means that defending yourself suddenly is a crime (sometimes with actual charges for the kid in question).

Zero-tolerance is almost universally a bad idea.

I got into a fight in high school, the only reason the other kid wasn't charged was I refused point blank to be part of that.
and by fight I mean I got beaten up

user437611
@PM2Ring That is a very real problem (moreso in third-world countries like mine) and I've heard many similar cases. I wonder what a viable long-term solution to that would be. The root problem seems to be unawareness. Like a vast majority of people are unaware/uneducated about the scientific reasoning behind why some people are transgender/non-binary or suffer from gender dysphoria.

What we have done in effect in the US is teach our children there is zero margin for error. That there is no forgiveness and moving past

user437611
6:23 PM
For instance, in primary schools, kids are only taught about the two dominant sexes and only much later can grapple the concept of non-binary or queer.

@PM2Ring I have a gay friend (married happily) and his mother keeps not so subtly suggesting he should find a nice girl.

@Houseman I'm not alone though though
And that's important
Even if I fall, i got folks to lend me a hand

user437611
@Mgetz The funny (and sad) part is...the mother is probably doing that in good faith...

@Blue People are complicated. We don't have good science to explain why any people are the way they are, whether the conform to a particular societies norms or not. So asking about the scientific reasoning behind why some people are transgender/non-binary or suffer from gender dysphoria isn't particularly helpful. And it tends to paint LGBTQ people as if they have some kind of sickness or defect, rather than simply being part of the broad spectrum of people being people.

user437611
Many of the previous generation people just don't seem to get the concept of LGBT

6:29 PM
@duplode On the contrary. I know just how messed up the situation is 😁

I personally grew up in a very conservative house and still have many of those views. But I was also taught to be nice and to be humble.
I've got way too much impostor syndrome and low self-esteem to judge other people.

user437611
@PM2Ring I get your point. It's certainly not a defect if it's accepted as "normal" and "natural". For instance, if the world primarily had males then being a woman would be a defect. Say, in such a world having a Y chromosome would a defect.

user437611
But we have around 50% of both the sexes, so neither is a defect per se

@Blue ... There's a plot arc in the Orville about that

Ugh; time to scrape the entire site and migrate it somewhere else.

user437611
6:32 PM
So I guess we have to normalize the concept of non-binary/ queer in some way

@Mgetz does what? Gives away blackberries?
I've nothing against giving away blackberries.

@Blue People are people

Sure, we can talk about genes & chromosomes, and the effects of maternal hormones on fetal brains, the range of responses of developing children to various family & societal pressures, etc. Some people are into that sort of thing. ;) But explaining the mechanics of sexuality or gender identity doesn't actually solve the actual practical problem of how LGBTQ people can live in society with respect.

@Shog9 encourages charity. TBH your statement looked more like you were arguing against socalism/communism than anything else.

As long as it doesn't hurt anyone and we don't hurt anyone...

6:34 PM
I think a religion that was very specific on the charity of blackberries would be amusing

@Mgetz I don't have anything against socialism either

I don't see a big deal

@JourneymanGeek: Sometimes somebody's going to get hurt.

@Joshua So we help them get better
We watch out for each other . Yanno like social animals

@JourneymanGeek A great poet once said "I get knocked down. But I get up again."

6:35 PM
I drink the whisky drink

user437611
@PM2Ring I do wonder what else can solve that problem then!

@Blue People grow up 😆

We're about 3 to 1 (and more if you count the people who haven't shown up because of the controversy) for overthrowing the CoC and rolling it back.

@Joshua Overthrowing?

@Blue So they need to be educated by simply seeing & interacting with more trans people. That's not so likely to happen where trans people don't feel safe revealing themselves. And like I said yesterday:
yesterday, by PM 2Ring
@DavidA Well, "slightly uneasy" is certainly better than outright open hostility. The way to help people overcome that uneasiness is for them to interact with trans people in an environment where trans people are safe. Gradually, they realise that trans people aren't aliens and they become more comfortable interacting with trans people. IME.

6:37 PM
@Joshua at the end of the day, this isn't a democracy so what the majority or even minority want is irrelevant

Most of us are actually more pissed over how a friend and respected member of the community was treated
2

@Mgetz: Would you like to put it to the test in the moderator elections.

probably worth remembering that a Code folks don't execute is... Worthless. The success or failure of a Code of Conduct isn't determined by votes on meta, it's determined by how folks actually conduct themselves... Every day...

@Shog9 :(
And weeeellll

@Joshua as was recently demonstrated Mod elections don't matter

6:38 PM
I'm not seeing the best of folks

@Shog9 But code that never gets pushed to production can in fact be quite valuable.

eh

@Mgetz That's a talk we need to have when things calm down

Write one and throw it away

@Joshua hmmmmm over 50% of the uk population who could of voted, didn't vote in the eu referendum, so counting the ones who didn't turn up really doesn't help anymore.

6:39 PM
If it's part of an iterative process.

the next one will be worse

anyone*

the third one though, will be better

@JourneymanGeek it's not yet settled, so it's premature anyway

@djsmiley2k: If you will not understand I cannot help you. I counted the feet votes on purpose.

user437611
6:39 PM
@PM2Ring Which is kind of a catch-22 because they (the meanies among them) wouldn't stop insulting trans people unless they're "educated". :P

feet votes?

> Second verse same as the first/ it doesn't get better it only gets worse!

?

not quite

@Mgetz Oh one of the things I want is to get a support net to make sure things don't get this bad

why... did it think that was a multi line quote

6:40 PM
@djsmiley2k: The people who quit the site over the CoC changes.

When this is over (as much as it can be over) can we nominate Shog for a nice long (and well-deserved) vacation?

@Joshua Citation needed

Oh right. sorry, misunderstood then. Now it's clearer :)

Permanent Vacation is the ninth studio album by American rock band Aerosmith, released on August 25, 1987 by Geffen Records. Although the official website for Aerosmith lists the release date for Permanent Vacation as August 18, 1987, the album was released 1 week later. The album marked a turning point in the band's career. It was their first to employ songwriters outside the band, instead of featuring songs solely composed by them. This came at the suggestion of executive John Kalodner. He also pushed the band to work with producer Bruce Fairbairn, who remained with them for another two albums...

I vote we builld @Shog9 a body....

6:41 PM
@Shog9 nooo not that long :D
but really, props for doing what you're doing, 24/7

oh god, flashbacks of a gf who'd play aerosmith and placebo constantly.
infact I can see the album cover in my minds eye without even clcking

@AndrasDeak TBF, I'm doing a lot of other things too

i'm building lego wall-e
:D

Autumn and Winter both hit Colorado this week, and have been sorta fighting it out Laurel & Hardy style

Tho my one is 'pre-fix' by lego, so it's likely his head will sag or even fall off :/

6:43 PM
so... I have a lot to do

@Shog9 any tree damage there? We mostly avoided it up here

@Shog9 excuse my nievity, you in part of the world where you have to 'prepare' for winter?

I'll find out which ones lived next spring

the reason is beyond me but Laurel & Hardy are known as "Stan and Pan" here...

Being english. I have to go 'hmmmm, might be the last time i cut the lawn this year' around now.

6:44 PM
I covered everything, but... Going from 80 to 8 in 24 hours isn't really... healthy... for a lot of trees

I'm a believer in prescriptive dictionaries, and requiring broken english is offensive.

@Shog9 established trees should be mostly fine, but saplings could be problematic

@AndrasDeak Laurel's first name was Stan. Donno about "Pan"
@Mgetz yeah, that's what I'm talking about

@Shog9 yeah, I just saw on wikipedia

at least up here most of the trees seemed to have already been preparing due to the cool nights

6:45 PM
guess it seemed easier to sell with a rhyming title or something

hadn't had a night below ~36 yet until last week
leaves were juuuuust starting to change

temperatures are fluctuating like crazy here
we were at 15-25c for all of september and most of october, and next week we'll have overnight frost

@Shog9 They are very much started to change up here, but not a lot of drop off yet. So any heavy snowfall... and a lot of snapped limbs

that was the nice bit: snow was fairly light

@Magisch autumn and spring have been mostly missing for years

6:47 PM
really feels like that doesn't it

OTOH, meant nothing had any natural insulation; temp was waaaay below freezing before the first flake fell

we had like a week between the last snow thawing and the first day of 20c+ in spring this year

@Blue Yes. I didn't say it was easy. In the Western countries, there has been progress over the last 5 decades or so, but it has been slow, and there have been a lot of casualties. :(

@Shog9 yeah the freezing rain was also a danger

escaped that entirely for once
Springs got messy, we were fine
and of course they're nowhere done with the work on I-25, so... Folks who had to go to Denver were screwed

6:49 PM
@Shog9 fortunately I work from home, but it looked slick out there

the fact humanity managed to live in this places, before.... well now, amazes me lol

What really unsettled me this year is that I've seen nearly no bugs

@djsmiley2k fun thing about cultures that live on the edge, they tend not to give a crap about the petty things. They have bigger things to worry about and making sure everybody is alive tends to be the priority.

like, insects have been at an all time low in my area
no beetles, very few spiders, very few bees, very few flies

@Magisch i had that in the UK maybe... 5 years ago
was really weird, they seem to be returning though.
also all the birds disappeared.

6:52 PM
Might be cyclical, but it's unsettling nonetheless

I think now-5years time we're going to really start to see the effects of global warming/climate change

I live in an industrial area surrounded by farms. Normally there's a ton of insects here and a lot of wildlife

@djsmiley2k My only bricks.se question is about that D:

I reflected on this as I cycled through the field road to work two weeks ago when the temperatures were pretty high and was like huh there's nothing besides the farm animals here that is kinda weird

6:53 PM
This year I've seen bees, wasps, few dragon fly, frogs, foxes, birds, squirrels, etc.
all the normal stuff. but for 1-2 years, at our old house (which isn't perticularly far away) there was a time when everything had just.... disappeared
was really really weird

/me blames the aliens

Then again, I have a clematis in the garden that started flowering last feburary and again in september. It's all rather confused.

@Magisch that might be a local thing. We've had plenty of insects, and we're having the second wave of actual bugs as we speak.
not that our countries are particularly close

we had no green beetles this year and last year we had nearly a month of hundreds of the buggers on many surfaces

those might spawn once a few years
I saw a praying mantis two weeks ago, for the first time in at least 5 years

6:59 PM
I'm glad the bees, wasps and butterflys are back.

Last time I saw Mantis I was praying it wasn't a bug ...

@djsmiley2k wasps?! Why are you glad for those?

because they kill a load of other nastier stuff for a start lol

I doubt that. There's nothing nastier than a wasp, except hornets ;D

Mantises are adorable

7:02 PM
also, if they disappeared no more figs or something (no, i don't like figs, but I understand the importance of balanced ecosystems).

mantises are awesome, and also very useful

unless you're bitesized for one

@Magisch those are bugs, not beetles :)

When it gets cold the first time, they gravitate towards still heated up buildings in hopes of some warmth

7:02 PM
they are also pests, that's what we are having a second wave of right now

shield bugs <3

Pests in what kind?

they eat crops, with little regard for agriculture :P

I found them annoying but extremely harmless last year, even though there were hundreds. The farmers didn't seem phazed either

One of these guys snuck into my shoe last night, and I only noticed when it said "splat"...

7:04 PM
I've seen absolutely none this year

well, not that guy I think, more on the fully green side

I'm not well studied on matters of bugs
but I generally dislike any in my home

@Magisch yeah, we only leave spiders and fast critters alone inside, everything else has to leave the premises (but I evacuate almost everything intact)
Although if my dog finds a bug (as in true bug) first then chance of survival drops rapidly. Apparently defensive bug smell is great for hiding your scent...

user437611
@PM2Ring I also considered whether having a certain reservation quota in government institutions/workplaces for the LGBT folks would help. Like in India we have caste-based reservations.

user437611
But that his own problems...like often privileged people from the (previously) lower castes take advantage of that opportunity and the general category people basically have to pay for their education via taxes, etc. Also, since the selection is not entirely merit-based they have trouble following the courses or performing well in the jobs.

7:11 PM
I'm not sure we should tackle that can of worms here

@Blue to 'normalise' something, you need it in the media
in film, tv, etc

user437611
@djsmiley2k That's very true!

user437611
Films are a great medium to spread social awareness

i'm trying to think of example....
the fact the media rarely features people smoking anymore had a huge effect

user437611
@djsmiley2k Yup

user437611
7:13 PM
It's a great initiative

and gay relationships, marriages, etc.
Covering it properly, sensibly, with care, in things such as soaps, can really help entire generations get a understanding, and visiblity of something which they may previously had no exposure to.

user437611
Yes, that would be a good start. I haven't seen as many queer-issues related ads, as I've seen ads demonstrating the side effects of smoking, etc.

@AndrasDeak I just escort all of them outside, mainly because I don't want to need to clean up the splat

user437611
Even in the cigarette packets these days they've those ads...so it's been pretty helpful. My father also kinda "slowed down" on his smoking habits..which is a good sign

@Blue What Andras said. But yeah, schemes like that have their problems, which you mentioned. And even when gay or trans politicians gain power without such schemes they don't have an easy time. A classic case in the USA comes from San Francisco, a region that has had a strong LGBT community for decades. You can read about Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official in California. IIRC, there was also a movie made about him.

user437611
7:25 PM
Interesting, I'll read about him

One way that gay people increased their acceptance in society is through comedy. Decades ago, a few gay people decided it was better to have people laugh at you than attack you. Years earlier, Jewish comedians had used that technique, with a lot of success. So they told self-deprecating gay jokes, deliberately getting their audiences to laugh at them. Gradually, that metamorphosed to the audiences laughing with them, and eventually they were able to make jokes about homophobia.

user437611
Heh :P

Trans comedians have also been doing this for a while, but the gays got a head start. ;) Of course, there are still comedians who tell homophobic & transphobic jokes, but such comedians tend to also draw a lot of criticism.

by that metric our current situation here is "women in stand-up" :P

Suppose that due to some mistake I cross a line and gets some flags. What will happen to me? Who is going to tell me that I crossed a line and how?

user437611
7:31 PM
@PM2Ring BTW Jewish comedians used that to escape from (befriend) the Nazis? (sorry I don't know much about his aspect of history)

But I live in a country where the current government has edited the constitution so that it now mentions "between a man and a woman" in the definition of marriage. We're speeding along the road of enlightenment, just in the wrong direction.

user437611
@VictorStafusa You'll probably get a moderator warning

@VictorStafusa if it's a single comment: probably nothing. If it's very bad or more comments: you might get a mod warning. If it's repeated, you might get suspended eventually.

@Zoethetransgirl Certainly. It was just that the personal attack was not apparent to me.

I'm not saying it's impossible to get suspended with a single comment, but I bet you would have to aim for that really low

7:33 PM
@VictorStafusa I tend to check back on comments I left. I they are gone I know I did something wrong.

@Blue @AndrasDeak How is a mod warning? I don't think that I'd ever got one. But I'm really unsure if I simply never got or just failed to recognize it as such.

user437611
@VictorStafusa I got one the day before yesterday

user437611
Showing a screenshot

you know when you get one

@VictorStafusa I believe it's a message in your inbox, with a notification
it's very hard to miss

7:34 PM
and email

That too? Neat.

@djsmiley2k For sure. But it takes time, so we have to be patient. Social patterns have a lot of momentum, you can't expect them to change overnight. I've seen older people watch a movie like Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, who seemed to enjoy the movie, and have genuine concern for the characters. And then 5 minutes later make some flippant homophobic remark, totally oblivious to the fact that there was anything wrong with that remark.

yup

@Houseman Great post.

user437611
@VictorStafusa I'm on my phone and too lazy to take a proper screenshot. Here's the text:

user437611
7:36 PM
Hello,

We wanted to let you know that we've observed some rudeness in your latest activity. We get it; anyone who's ever tried to engage with others online has probably been tempted to lash out at someone else. This is just a friendly reminder that we require all participants to act in a professional and civil tone when using these sites. If another user has wronged you in some way, please do not respond in kind. Simply flag the content for moderator attention and move on.

If this is a simple misunderstanding, no harm done. Sometimes it is helpful to remind ourselves on occasion that keep

user437611
You'll see it in your inbox as a normal notification

The ideas behind Stoicism and Epicureanism, two of the three great philosophies of Antiquity and possibly all ages since, are still of paramount value. We humans can control our emotions; by doing so, we will lead the best lives.

Well, I think that I never got that, as far as I can remember. But I had lots of comments of mine being deleted on many occasions.

@Blue Maybe there was a little bit of that happening in Nazi Germany, but I doubt it was significant, although there are cases of Jewish actors trying to flee Germany being assisted by Nazis who admired them as actors. I can't bring any names to mind, but it shouldn't be too hard to find.

@VictorStafusa that's normal

7:40 PM
@Blue Hmm what did you get that for?

@Blue My earlier comment was about Jewish comedians in America fighting American anti-Semitism, which was rather strong.

user437611
@Cerberus Not sure. I guess a couple of my comments crossed the line and were flagged/deleted

user437611
Anyway, I've cut down my main site participation

user437611
It's probably best to take a break

Hmm.
Wise.

7:43 PM
What I was afraid is to just subtly getting a boilerplate generic message like "You are suspended for a year. Have a nice day." without even knowing why.

user437611
@PM2Ring Ah, that's pretty interesting

user437611
Where did you read these btw?

@VictorStafusa they start with 1 day or a week

user437611
@PM2Ring Oh, I see

user437611
Makes sense

7:44 PM
hmmmm I never got a message about my ban :/

user437611
@djsmiley2k Chat ban?

@djsmiley2k chat or main?

but this isn't the place, etc.

user437611
You don't get messages for those

oh wat i guess it is a chat ban because it's not on main site right.

7:45 PM
yup

TIL.

@rene That's not necessarily true, especially at the moment. There's a lot of bulk comment deletion going on, so some good stuff gets culled along with the toxic stuff. And of course there's no point leaving around ok comments that don't make much sense without the context of the bad comments they're replying to.

sure
I was hoping to not start another firestorm about comment moderation ....

no, I insist

kicks user

7:49 PM
D:
*apologetically waters rene*

user384163
@PM2Ring I know. Even as I was attacking it I felt guilty. It isn't my place to challenge other people's validity just because I'm hurt.

user437611
@PM2Ring Question: Why was there anti-Semitism in America though? Americans didn't have any master race concepts I guess? Just vanilla racism?

user437611
I'm so damn ignorant about Western history :P

I don't think there's such a thing as "vanilla racism"

I don't think you can apply logic to racism to explain 'why'

7:54 PM
hating a group of people is as much about thinking you are superior than about thinking they are inferior, if this makes sense

do we really need to discuss the racism thing here and now?

I don't insist :P

user437611
@djsmiley2k Sure, but there are definitely explanations for different "levels" of racism? Just because I feel someone is inferior to me in some aspect, I wouldn't attempt to gas them all

in other news, lego wall-e!

user437611
@rene Eh, okay

7:56 PM
@rene what's your stance on true bugs?

@rene aww, I was about to D:

@AndrasDeak I trap them

spooky!
