@AndrasDeak that's bribery
> Heck I'm not actually sure how much trust I have with folks right now but a good chunk of in the community folks know me.
@Journey you break my heart 😢
I didn't have a world conquering plan, it just came to me and it was very convincing

@Blue What rene said. However, there are certainly instructive historical parallels between racism and anti-LGBTQ bigotry. You may be ignorant of Western history, but hey, most Westerners are pretty ignorant of Indian history & culture. At least you have a glimpse of Western culture through movies. Most Westerners don't watch many Indian movies.

@PM2Ring this message?

@M.A.R. No, this one:

do we really need to discuss the racism thing here and now?

@M.A.R. get a spare 😁
More seriously- there's so many new faces on meta I am unsure people know me

@PM2Ring Heh, indeed. Anyway, thanks...this was an informative/enlightening discussion. Goodnight (I'm signing out). :)

Q: How many more casualties in the war on pronouns?

Jacqueline CailotI've been reading posts and comments all over the network for many years and never felt like I need to register. already been discussed here

Can we stop abusing rude flags to censor content we disagree please? Keep it civil people.
2

we already are

8:19 PM
I hope so

@Sklivvz I mean, what is and isn't flaggable is fully up to the people flagging to decide
and the CMs handling those flags

We can't forbid people using or equivalent in the tavern

requests are, as they always have been, okay in this room. It's still, as it always has been, up to to the people looking at them to decide for themselves whether or not it's worthy of a flag.

Don't abuse it
As simple as that
You know and I know

8:21 PM
Ah man
Now what is this one about?

@M.A.R. meh

I've seen no signs of it being abused - if I do, I'll do something about it.

I linked a few

This drama keeps branching everywhere, creating tangentially related drama of its own

it's [flag-pls], not [flag-or-we'll-kick-you-in-the-shins]

8:22 PM
I wouldn't put it beside M.A.R. to head-butt people though

aye, true
[flag-pls-but-mind-your-head]

If one is in good faith, fine. If not, stop it, don't be a dick. Is that clearer now?

I'm mostly a roundhouse person
But head butts are also fine

@M.A.R. most houses tend to be square or rectangular, IME

@ArtOfCode the square is a lie
And you just proved by contradiction why roundhouses are awesome

8:24 PM
@Sklivvz where?

Where what?

You linked a few ... what exactly?

user206222
...I post one solitary abusive flag request that people broadly disagreed with, and this is the outcome? Jeez, so much for trying to clean up the worst of the worst on main meta.

There have been allegation that flag are being abused in order to censor stuff. I personally have see non-rude stuff deleted as rude. I am not interested in posting example where you can debate me whether they are or not. It does not matter.
2
If those deletions and flag are in good faith, fine.

rude and non rude is kinda subjective in this past week

8:26 PM
No
Not really

I don't think anyone is going around deliberately doing ideological censorship

user206222
You know those allegations are coming from the people whose posts are being deleted, for being generally awful, right?

@Sklivvz TBH it is

user206222
You've dealt with those complaints as a mod, Sklivvz.

user206222
It happens any time you delete comments when trying to do your job.

8:27 PM
We're all trying to keep this mess tidy. Can we not argue among ourselves, please?
Everyone's edgy, and rightfully so, but we're all acting in good faith.

Then we don't have a problem

my point exactly

@AndrasDeak well not me, I do nothing that resembles acting these days.
The nodding bystander

@M.A.R. come on

I don't think we need to make a mountain out of a molehill on this one.
Sklivvz posted a reminder, that's good. No need for extra drama to spawn.
@AndrasDeak no really. I'm not even voting on anything anymore
Except if it's Shog comments

8:30 PM
Absolutely. Just watch out for bad actors: if we abuse rudeness flags on such a emotionally charged topic, nothing good will come out of it. That's my worry.
And, also to answer @Aza, rude flags are hugely abused on skeptics

user206222
That, I did not know, I've never had to deal with r/a flag abuse

user206222
...well. not en masse, at least.

Well, I kinda can imagine
Leftist opinions are offensive to rightists, and vice versa

Facts are offensive to people with only opinions, mostly

Sometimes a simple lack of apparent empathy comes across as rude or abusive.
Well... rude at least.

8:34 PM
You mean an apparent lack of empathy? I'm not sure what "apparent empathy" is? :-D

Honestly, objectively speaking, the stance skeptics take on science skeptics can be very rude.

^ Subjectively speaking, you mean?

Well, I dunno, yeah, but not taking any sides
The look I'd give to an anti-vaxxer, for example.

@Sklivvz Appearing completely emotionally uninvested in you or your concerns.

@Sklivvz remember some smiling emojis were really creepy a while ago?

8:35 PM
Not a good definition, but it'll have to do for now.

I guess that's apparent empathy

Probably the autism spectrum (yay), but I come across as incredibly unempathetic (and in fact I often am) until I form the necessary emotional connection. Fortunately I deal with computers all day and it's not that much of an issue.

Some times, of course, people are not as soft touched as they could be

@Sklivvz 'course but it's kinda hard to always be like that, don't you think?
I'm going through the mentions of "Skeptics" here and apparently I'm the champion

user8161253Then human are full with bacteria!

Lol that was a good one

@M.A.R. sigh measles is viral.
I'm no fun at parties.

8:39 PM
@DavidA Then human are fill with virus!

A suprising number of people take offense are being told that they are objectively incorrect on a site where the only point is striving to be objective

Meh, surprising only the first two dozen times you see it

After that it's just . . . meh

For the record, it's spelled "hamster". There is no P in the word.

8:43 PM
@Aza Eh. More than one in effect
But asking for eyes on stuff I'd normal
And there were a litany of complaints

@DavidA I WNATED TO SPELLIT THAT WAY

@Sklivvz A hampster in a dumpster?

@JourneymanGeek Prints is a cool singer

Dumpster is actually a trademark derived from the name "Dempster" if memory serves me right.

Which is a trademark for Dampster

8:47 PM
George Roby Dempster (September 16, 1887 – September 18, 1964) was an American businessman, inventor, and politician, active primarily in Knoxville, Tennessee, during the first half of the 20th century. Dempster is known for the invention of the Dempster-Dumpster, a now-commonly-used trash receptacle that can be mechanically emptied into garbage trucks. During the 1910s and 1920s, the Dempster Brothers Construction Company, operated by Dempster and his brothers, built a number of roads and railroads across the Southern Appalachian region. Dempster also served as a city manager and mayor of...

@Sklivvz that post does not paint me or @Aza in a fair light. I now have to worry that on top of being targeted for being trans that I am going to be targeted as an idealogue. It has already carried over to other parts of the network.

This is a public chat. As shog has previously cautioned, we have no idea who might be listening in

I'm listening in.

user384163

I'm listening through
Not painting people in a fair light seems to be trending these days unfortunately.

user384163
8:51 PM
@Magisch but posts calling out specific users has never been acceptable.

If I ever am a moderator, I won't be a ♦ moderator, but a ♠ moderator.

right, but that wont stop people from doing it

@202324 So never?

@M.A.R. How does one listen through? That seems like aa skill I'd want to learn.

@AGirlHasNoName I am sorry you feel that way, but that post is not, in my opinion, an attack on you!?

8:52 PM
Just at the right time.

And the little agency we have to prevent it does not extend beyond this site

@Alex No.

@JourneymanGeek not for now...

Not teaching you

@Magisch I did notice that Google is indexing all of this. google.com/… has a list of my messages.

8:52 PM
If someone makes a thread about one of us on 4chan, we have no recourse

You need to prove yourself worthy

How do I prove my worth?

@Sklivvz I guess there are 2 difficulties here

@DavidA but it's ranked really low unless you specifically search for them
@Alex see, you just ruined it

We have a ton of.... Stuff going on.
Not all good
And well - nowhere near the ability to keep track of it

8:53 PM
@M.A.R. How can I rectify my mistake?

Folks should be flagging

@Alex ruined it again

The conversation on this topic is happening on so many fronts at once, and some very unsavory places too. We only see the tip of the iceberg here, and it's already sewer quality. What can any of us do besides our best?

I need better guidance, apparently.

I did some searching and there was a 4chan thread about it a while back but it was basically just whining about SE as a whole.

8:54 PM
@DavidA That's normal
Likewise hacker news
And most of them never read the article

@Alex Step one: Pretend to know what you're doing. Step 2: tell someone that step one is to pretend you know what you're doing. Step 3: wait I guess. Step 4: Profit!

That sounds too easy.

:7969487 It links to some public comments you made, that can't be "rude". It merely says that using this chat room for coordinating rude flags they think they are unfair is worrying. What is it that worries you about that question? Perhaps we can correct it

Or too hard.
Not sure which.

In a perfect world, we could get by with the Bill & Ted CoC. "Be excellent to each other." Maybe someday.

8:56 PM
@Alex yeh, but don't question the process! It works 10/10 times 100% guarantee for free if you try it RIGHT NOW! (... I'll stop now ^^")

In this case I won't even know if it works.
Since I don't know what listening through is supposed to be like in the first place.
So I won't know if I've achieved it.

user384163
@Sklivvz and because the comments are gone it makes it look like I am attacking other people's opinions.

@Cerberus Heh...when this started I wrote G-d in a comment (lit. explaining the basic view of HaShem) and ended defending why I won't write the "o". Actually, I've had to do that before and the users who question that never really get sanctioned (despite it being incredibly rude and silly. In my case as I do it more out of habit - there are people who take the idea of never writing "the name" very seriously.

@AGirlHasNoName perhaps its what they honestly think
It happens to me all the time
I've been stalked multiple times by ...nice users

user384163
But the effect is to silence me and it worked. I won't be trying to remove any more hate.

8:59 PM
@Alex 403. Access forbidden

What if I ask nicely?

@LinkBerest I can't imagine what would have happened if you had told others to write it that way, too.

@AGirlHasNoName disagreement silences you?

But is it really rude to question that spelling?

user206222
Yeah I'm kind of with her on this. I don't think you realize the chilling effect this has on trans people, how this isn't just "disagreemment."

9:00 PM
@AGirlHasNoName Let someone else do it for a while.

lol...I went looking for the last time it happened on world building and then remembered Monica handled it so its gone....that's just so ironic

Heh.

user384163
@Sklivvz that's not disagreement. It is vilification. I've already been targeted for harassment. Now it is going to get worse.

@DavidA valid CoC of every other community I deal with.

@Sklivvz The framing of that question is off. It uses a loaded characterisation of what is going on lately to make a rather strong accusation of brigading, picking two specific users as examples.
It is hard to see what it can achieve, other than a chilling effect.

9:02 PM
Sure, but 99% of posts on this topic are politically loaded in either direction

user384163
If you knew half of the things people had said to me over the last few days you wouldn't dream of calling it disagreement

I mean

user206222
Like, there's no two ways to cut this. I'm here only because I have some semblance of agency to effect a reduction in vitriol of any kind. But that post in particular, and the comments on it, target me. It is meant to get me to shut up, and by proxy, threaten anyone else with the same aim.

user384163
@Sklivvz I'm referring to the single post that publicly vilifies me

Is it vilification or basic criticism? There's so much garbage on Meta that I can't even tell anymore.
2

user206222
9:03 PM
The stuff that I'm working to remove is, on the whole, horrific.

user384163
It's vilification

I can't really claim to understand it 100%, but I don't quite get the villification angle on that post

user206222
It's vilification, @DavidA.

Which comment? Is it still there?

user384163
There's a reason the network doesn't allow people to call each other out. There is a moon going on in case you haven't noticed

9:04 PM
We've all been accused of ideological censorship multiple times since this started. Just today there was one insinuating SE was somehow instructing us ROs to heavily censor chat

user206222
I'm not going to try to prove this to you. I'm at my limit of trying to performatively prove this crap in public.

user384163
@Magisch Yes but it's been general. This post is about me and @Aza alone

I guess I ... I can see a way someone would say that without meaning to villify me so I don't make that assumption. But I can't claim to understand your situation

the only thing you can control in this world are your perceptions
2

user384163
@Aza :hugs: you've done so much already

9:06 PM
so ... catch 22 then. If we kill off that post there's going to be another one claiming the fact we deleted it proves their point

@Sklivvz Not all of them go such a long way to drum up support against "their enemies", though (see the second paragraph of that).

user384163
@StephanS Please spend some time be receiving end of directed hate and tell me it's just your perception.

Even if SE kills that post that other one is going to be there

@Aza @AGirlHasNoName

user206222
Sadly, that ship's already sailed, @Sklivvz. Any edit is a tourniquet on an open wound.

9:08 PM
What is your idea on dealing with the situation?

Should I revert it then?

@AGirlHasNoName even on the receiving end of hate the statement still stands, the only thing someone can control is how they react

user384163
@Magisch You can't kill it. And my name is already out there. The edit might help some. But it's in the history and someone may call that out too

Hey now, @Shog9 has been exemplary throughout this whole mess.

@StephanS I think you're seeing this a bit to flippantly

user206222
9:09 PM
Nah, it's fine to leave. The edit helps, but that damage is already done.

controlling how you react is harder then you think depending on what people say and do to you
sure I can turn the other cheek when someone punches me in the face but you can't seriously claim that to be a viable path forward

@Magisch even if it's hard, it's still the only thing that one can control

user384163
@StephanS I don't think you're being mean but please stop saying that to me.

Hey I'm famous now.

user206222
@StephanS Please stop saying this, this is severely bad in ways you can't even imagine. I don't think you're doing it intentionally, but it's sincerely beyond the pale.

9:11 PM
@AGirlHasNoName I'm not trying to be mean, I'm just saying how other people treat us is out of our control, it sucks, I agree

I don't actually see links to them in that post, but the comments might have been deleted already.

user206222
You don't want me to talk about why. It's not good conversation for a public chat.

I feel like we're going nowhere with this discussion. @StephanS you've been asked to drop it, please oblige. Everyone disengage please.

@Magisch In hindsight, we should have done that edit hours ago. Something to keep an eye for in future posts.

@StephanS That much is true. But saying - effectively - that if you're offended it's your own fault - is very much untrue and it's hurtful. It's not possible to control your thoughts and emotions to that degree, humans aren't physiologically built for it.

9:16 PM
@ArtOfCode I will respect that others have asked me to drop it, but I will end my input to this conversation with it's impossible to make mean people stop being mean

Aye, I'll happily agree with you there.
Anyone got up to anything interesting today?

@ArtOfCode it's a bit more complex than that. People can and do toughen up. It's part of growing, and one does get tougher with age. That said, once you are offended, the suggestion is not very useful and it ends up being inadvertently not constructive
I'm a slow typer. I'll disengage now
That also gets tougher with age

We found baby squirrels falling out of a tree at work because mom left, so we had a fun morning

user384163
I'm at the playground with my son. That's cheering me up.

i'm gonna get some sleep in
good night everyone

9:19 PM
@ArtOfCode that will be a nice upgrade to the hamster engine
@Magisch night

user384163
@Magisch Gnight

@Magisch 'night o/

I spent the weekend building and debugging my home studio. Ask me anything

I... just finally got that carrying case for a portable hard drive. I'm getting a headache just being in the same room as it from these offgassing chemicals.

9:21 PM
aw

Random strangers are good sometimes

is someone taking them home, or are you leaving them in the office?

Called a phone number posted several years ago on a website that said it might be a link to someone who could help with squirrels - turns out they were in Yorkshire, but they had contacts in London, got someone to pick them up from us and rush them to an animal hospital in Aylesbury in Suffolk

@ArtOfCode Does trying (probably unsuccessfully) to keep an answer under 30,000 characters count as interesting?

that's cute, those squirrels will soon be relaxing and enjoying Yorkshire Gold

9:24 PM
@StephanS they wouldn't have survived if we'd left them there - it was touch and go whether they were even going to survive the afternoon, but they got to the hospital conscious and breathing so we've done the best we possibly could

@ArtOfCode That was really nice of you.
where I'm from we here something called a Fox squirrel, they're the size of dogs with blackheads and a brown body

they sound mildly terrifying

@ArtOfCode awww, poor little fellas

@ArtOfCode they are but like everything else, if you give them food they'll be nice
without zooming in on the photo I thought the water bottle said "STFU"
@Sklivvz what do you mean by home studio?

@Blue incorrect (I do know a lot about that particular history): the practice is way older than the Nazis and just one of many employed by Jewish people to simply survive (but the Nazis would just put you in a camp and then ask for the jokes - didn't work). Note, there was a call to revive this practice recently as we have seen antisemitism on the rise since 2017 (yes I have citations if needed, I kinda just expect people to ask for 'em)
also @PM2Ring ^

9:33 PM
@LinkBerest Anti-Semitism on SE?
I would be interested in seeing examples: I think this makes one's case stronger.

Q: More needs to be done against anti-semitic posts on Stack Exchange

Andrew GrimmToday, there was yet again an anti-semitic question on Stack Exchange, about Nazi Germany's actions against the Jews. What do I mean by "yet again"? Well, in this Skeptics meta question from February this year, I noted that half of the "helpful" flags on questions on Skeptics.SE were about the h...

This is one of the recent ones to start with

Thanks.

Couple of world building questions I could point to (most of the worst was of course deleted by our hard working mods....before the old woman voice "troubles")
If you go through the religion tag on WB (esp. with 10k) you'll probably find a few of them though

There was a post the other day on here about Soros and his money involvement in SE

9:38 PM
@StephanS In what? Skeptics?

@DavidA No on meta, it was deleted

@LinkBerest Okay, none of those are accessible to me.

Home recording is the practice of sound recording in a private home, rather than in a professional recording studio. A studio set up for home recording is called a project studio or home studio. Home recording is practiced by indie bands, singer-songwriters, hobbyists, podcasters, documentarians, and even top-name acts. The cost of professional audio equipment has been dropping steadily in recent years, and information about recording techniques has become increasingly available due to the internet. These trends have resulted in a dramatic increase in the popularity of home recording and a...

The only one I saw was the one about Jews controlling the media in America.
A bit of a conspiracy theory.

Tons of holocaust deniers on Skeptics.

9:41 PM
@LinkBerest Thanks. FWIW, the house I live in was formerly owned by a guy who worked for the Nazis during WWII. It's now owned by his younger brother (now in his early 90s) who also worked for the Nazis.

(all moderated, of course)

@Sklivvz I'm pretty sure that question has been asked and answered. Making a question itself taboo might reinforce the conspiracy theory.

I mean, the fact that it was "world building" made it kinda hard to judge validity of questions sometimes. Like my main problem with Aborting Abrahamism (which would see to be horrible by the title and does make me uncomfortable) had to be "its too broad and poorly researched" cause otherwise a question on "how could the Jews be eliminated during historical periods" would have stayed open.

it wasn't directly anti-semitic but sometimes when Soro's money is brought up there's sometimes the insinuation of "Jewish money" conspiracy

9:43 PM
Yeah.

user206222
yeah it's, way way more often just "jews control the media" in disguise as, "this jew controls the media"

@Cerberus you can always search in Smokey Reports. The abusive stuff gets reported along with the spam.

@StephanS If the Koch brothers aren't immune to criticism, I don't see why Soros should be. So long as it is well-sourced and well-reasoned.

kinda hard to filter to anti-Semitic stuff, though

@ArtOfCode something something natural language processing, n-grams, classifiers, etc.

9:45 PM
@DavidA I was unfortunate enough to read it
it was not

@DavidA ...or, y'know, regex

Hey they're good enough for parsing HTML.
... :-D

@DavidA I agree it's hard to determine but some may people have poisoned the well with Soro

22 matches for jew(?:s|ish)?: all on Skeptics, all 1-2 years ago

@LinkBerest The brothers I mentioned in my previous comment were child slaves in Auschwitz. Nobody else in their family survived the Holocaust.

9:47 PM
@rene Ah, thanks!
Doesn't look Anti-Semitist to me?

35 messages moved to Chimney

@Cerberus given that it's by the same user who posted holocaust-denial crap, it probably is

Ah, I see.

user206222
@Cerberus very "just asking questions"

I'd delete the question just for demanding "Refute this."

9:49 PM
Can confirm the anti-jewish stuff being both regular and rising in recent years. Lot of it doesn't get seen, but... It's there.

user206222
even w/o art's context it's a bright red flag

I've deleted so many sockpuppets by that user that even the name triggers ptsd

People also might do some things like criticize Israel as a stand-in for antisemitism. Depends on the wording.

hmm....the aborting abrahamism is the only not deleted "example" I can find. And that makes sense the question is borderline and the worst answers were deleted (I've certainly encounter others but it get handled fairly quickly usually)

@DavidA people also shut down any criticism of Israel as antisemitic, it goes both ways

9:52 PM
@PM2Ring yeah, I was responding to the earlier one (there's a lot in the transcripts so might not have gotten to it)

@LinkBerest Not a problem.

^ and any time I bring it up I always get at least one person saying its because people see any criticism of Israel as antisemitic sigh

user206222
there is... a striking parallel here

user206222
:(

I can feel the drop off in this conversation and the turn it's about to make

9:56 PM
@LinkBerest stop the passive aggresiveness, You are offending me and are out of line

That sounds like our document management versioning

pew pew pew pew

noot noot

that's document management disposal :P

@rene ugh. what happens when one is named "current" and the other is named "newest"?

@Aza hence what Andrew meant (in response to your comment) - did not want to bring this up as I think there has been enough pinging of your name recently but thought you might see it after that statement

9:58 PM
@DavidA then you look at the modified dates like you should've done to start with :P

@DavidA we send the wrong document ....

That's how my old group did code version control. :-(
