@Quill huh, whoops. lol
Too many cool stuff

user202362
It actually does not make sense if SE doesn't go through IPO if it could. I don't really understand why the idea was so vehemently denied.

@Quill and SE got testers, those are us.

user202362
On another irrelevant matter, I saw at least 20 some ducks in a small park some 30 seconds stroll away

I wonder if someone was looking for the stock exchange & found stack exchange instead, hehe

1:10 PM
@Andy look around - there are lots of little... surprises. Explore both floors.

@Oded That looks less like an office and more like a house

Hahaha, Stack Exchange 1.0 was a toaster

Do you guys have work cats?

I found a nerf gun fight.

@Magisch nope. But they did get Uber puppies in a couple of times.

1:11 PM
Ah :D
Must be a blast to work there

@Magisch kitchen area is stocked up well. Lots of goodies.
True for all offices.
NY and Denver have private chefs as well.

London feels left out with just having catering.

In my workplace we buy our own lunch, and we have one fridge, which we have to fill ourselves

You guys have inhouse chefs? That's a small kitchen....

1:13 PM
Nothing is free here, and anything but basic office supplies has to be bought by the employee in terms of accomodation

@Quill Apparently it is cost effective.

The oven is domestic size, barely.

The annoying part is the company I work for makes not that much less revenue then SE does

That's not where they cook (IIRC, that tour predates the chefs)

1:14 PM
@Oded you have Jon Skeet in the office as well? ;)

So unless SE has a ridiculous profit margin, the bosses here are just stingy :p

@Oded I figured

@Oded too bad! He deserves better! :P

Working for a food-related company has good perks ;-)

1:15 PM
You employ a unicorn?! This explains a lot

Jon skeet is a senior engineer for google
He's probably making the bank of banks there

@Magisch He also does a lot of charity work

@Magisch it is not about profit margin. It is about management, hiring and how to treat employees philosophy:
If you have an hour to kill, that's an internal presentation Joel did for new hires to explain our management structure and how it is different from other companies.
We decided to publish it publicly, 'cause why not?

"publish it publicly" - nice one! :D

@Oded Well in my company they're doing that fairly ridigly. Everyone starts at or near minimum wage, everyone works from 8:00 to 16:30 on weekdays, every showing up late means 1h unpaid extra work, 3x and you get written up, get written up twice and you're fired usually. Also, everyone gets state mandated minimum PTO and state mandated minimum Sick leave

1:19 PM
I think I liked balpha's regex talk the best
@Magisch ruuuuuuuuuuunnnnn

Basicly they're at or near the minimum required by law for all employee accomodations

@Magisch yeah. He talks about that kind of org in his talk.

SO Careers has great jobs if you got the experience

At Stack we believe that hiring someone is trusting them to do their jobs.

I'm a first year apprentice with only a high school (bit better, the german equivalent) diploma. I'm stuck here until summer 2018 at the least

1:20 PM
@Andy - the unicorn sometimes plays ping pong with the dinosaur. For real.

As apprentice I don't even get paid minimum wage

@Oded one of them is you? ;)

In actuality about 350 euros a month, which comes out to like 2,5 eur/hr

@Magisch been there. Sometimes you need to go through a place like that in order to get the experience the better places look for. Think of it as a stepping stone.
@ShadowWizard nope. Google Street View came to the NY office when I wasn't there...

@Oded Now we have to know...who wins such a game?

1:21 PM
oh hey, I used this exact pic in my story! meta.stackexchange.com/questions/271359/… /cc @Oded

@Andy the internet wins.

The alternative is being homeless
So it beats that
Which is pretty cool

@Magisch At my company, everybody shows up whenever, does whatever, and gets results. They often work late.

@ShadowWizard I am not usually there... as you can imagine.

1:23 PM
Although its pretty frustrating to clock in at 8:01 knowing you'll get written up and 1 hour unpaid overtime for it

Yeah - that's just asking for people to leave as soon as they can.

And of course, if you leave after 16:30 all time after that is considered donated to the company
sigh

Modern Slavery.
or, in some cases, Golden Cage...

As they say here in England: pay peanuts, get monkeys.

You suffer, but you won't get out because you know you won't find anything better.

user202362
1:25 PM
@ShadowWizard I was going to beg for upvotes then I remembered that I was question banned not answer banned

Well for less then a third of minimum wage thats not exactly a golden cage

@Magisch yeah, rusty cage...
@Telkitty hmm? It's locked now anyway....

The problem is more like not finishing an apprenticeship is like the biggest and reddest of flags here
If I do that I'm all but guaranteed to never find work in this field in germany again
@Oded You just indirectly called me a monkey :o

code monkey?

Full house - @spolsky Q&A hosted by @FlixBus 👍🏼 https://t.co/bu37S8kYRa

1:28 PM
Well, they're expecting me to turn a production problem into a solution
We don't have a PM so to speak

user202362
I wish I could train real monkeys to code

@Magisch not sure what is the meaning of apprenticeship in your place, in my country we have tons of "temporary employees", with no rights whatsoever, low salary, and usually fired automatically after maximum one year.

@Quill ^^^ Joel is in Germany, that's why Alex is there too. (see tweet)

So idk what job title that'd be
@ShadowWizard could be worse, at least my state mandates some pretty humane standards

1:29 PM
apart from the minimum wage not applying to apprentices thing

@Telkitty They can; you just need enough time.

@Magisch here it's 12 vacation days per year, and sick days are paid only when you're sick for at least two full days, even then only 50% of the salary. Sad joke.

Sounds like a place that doesn't value their employees, meaning their employees don't have any kind of incentive to stay/preform which in turn reinforces the original opinion.

Pretty much yeah
Its an old industry thing, and I'm in the IT department

1:31 PM
@Derpy cheers!

@ShadowWizard Thinking about it, a small Castlevania like game where you have to dodge flying Shog heads could be a good April Fool joke

@Oded the driving motivation here is, quote (translated): "We need people to do a specific job which is not that difficult. We also need to employ them at the least possible cost per job done. So thats all you get. If someone will do it for less then you, then you're gone as soon as its legal"

What is this
>_>

@Magisch yeah, sounds like backwards management. Treating people like cogs in a machine. Which for some jobs they are, but most of IT isn't like that.

The main business of the company is programming and testing semiconductors
Which means mostly machine work
Most of the coding for the automation on that is done in house, by our 4 person IT team
Mostly strung together from people who picked up coding on the fly or learned some form of electrician, because almost no graduated developer will work for slightly above minimum wage

Yeah, and I am sure the code quality matches.

1:48 PM

Aye, very.

LOL @Telkitty this one has all the "let's go find it out" attitude.

user202362
stackexchange team in Europe on brexit voting day, I am all suspicious </troll> :p

@Oded Do you like a 900.000+ Lines of code Ms access 2003 VBA based business management system?
mostly uncommented too
The main app .mdb file is 610mb big
:D

Nobody likes that. But that's exactly the kind of mess I'd expect from your description.
And one day it will break and nobody will be able to fix it.

There are 2 people there who built the whole thing
In 3 years, one of them will retire
from then on out its "Lets hope this never fails again because if it does nobody will have a hint of a clue what happened and how to fix it"

user202362
programs are never about lines of code, it's about what they do

2:00 PM
busfactor--

Well
these 2 people worked for the company for 33 and 29 years respectively

Support for Office 2003 ended two years ago.

and they're still not far from minimum wage
Half of that stuff is incompatible with higher office versions
and some of our pcs are still on windows 98 because management deems upgrading too expensive

And they are running on unsupported software.

Meh

2:02 PM
If anything happens to that system, the company is dead. Or takes a serious loss.

Its not as if we had anyone with decent product experience in here

Someone needs to teach management there about risk/benefit analysis ;)

I got in here about 7 months ago and I'm already shaking my head at some of the code
Keep in mind that im still a complete scrub
Our "Management" has no qualifications worth speaking of either
Neither of the 4 guys in charge knows a shred of IT

Fair. But asking them "What happens if this system stops working?".
Wonder what the answer would be.

"we're paying you to have it not do that, so that'd be your fault then"
Suggesting things that don't fit into their worldview is a easy way to get fired quickly

2:05 PM
Fair.

So people stopped trying long ago

But sounds like they deserve everything they would get once the system crashes. And it will.

Obviously, the only question is when
I hope thats after 2018

Can I assume there are no backups (to speak of)?

we have an old tape backup system

2:06 PM
When was it last tested? They do test backups, right?

One of the things our sysadmin got through was doing a generational tape backup
Uhh ... no

:)

Nobody knows how to :D

So the backup is useless.

and management is sure as hell not paying for training on anything

user202362
2:07 PM
I have a bunch of apps on the market, sometimes I think to myself: what if I die tomorrow since I like high risk activities so much, my parents are going to inherit my 2 properties on one piece of land and a bunch of apps, ROFL. Yes, apps still got downloads despite the fact that I have not maintained them for ages ...

If you can't restore from it, it isn't worth anything.

me and the sysadmin are the only people who can recover data
We do occasionally
sometimes it fails, sometimes it works
its a crapshoot really

That's not a backup / disaster recovery plan.

Its not
but its all we got
Most of the company is running on hardware that was outdated when windows xp came out

:D:D:D:D:D::DD

2:09 PM
A business that isn't willing to invest in the important things will be left behind.

Gotta run

Have a nice day :3

@Oded That's a lot sooner than I expected.

@Magisch - parting shot: at least you are getting a good lesson in how not to do things ;)

Can smokey check if the answer is gone before sending to here?

it does, and it usually deletes them once they're gone anyway
Yay, my Flag Context userscript works nicely... now time to wait for a flag and see what happens ;-)

2:21 PM
@Quill what does it do?

Wow I lost 200 rep
But it isn't showing up?

@Unix Why? Serial voting?

On which site?

@TIPS no

2:26 PM
IIRC serial voting being reversed didn't have any notifications.

@Unix OK yeah that's why.

Suspension or not suspension.

But some are more equal than the others.

@randal'thor all human pees are equal. :D
@TIPS nope. That's the beauty of this.

3:05 PM
... what has this room become... :P

YOU CALL ANIMAL FARM UNDISMISBEAUTIFUL?

@hichris123 public urinal? :D

@randal'thor It's @TIPS fault.

(does that work here?)

you broke it

@rene I never notice the smell, so case solved. :P
@randal'thor ditch the space

@randal'thor It's John's fault.

3:07 PM
@rene racist :o

@TIPS says the chemical ...

@SmokeDetector Way to go Smokey, scaring off newerer users.

hmm.... if an employer fires someone due to bad smell, is this legal?

@rene You'll see, you'll all see that the 2020 US president will be a chemical.

3:08 PM
@TIPS it's this the troll who abused it? ;)

@hichris123 you have pin powers here?

@ShadowWizard No, this is MAR speaking

@randal'thor I'm afraid so.

@randal'thor You call RO powers powers? :(

@ShadowWizard I'm not sure, but I'll try it and let you know

3:09 PM
@rene OK! :D

@TIPS Yes. I hail from Mos Eisley.

But in a room full with super powers, RO power is just a tease....

Just watch them kick each other

Like giving a wooden sword to someone fighting among knights with full armor and two handed swords.

damn

3:11 PM
lol you found it just now?? :D
but you can pin them

@ShadowWizard The only blues here are those with supersuperpowers.

And when you unpin, I think there's a star. /cc @Quill

@ShadowWizard I knew about it before, I just do it too often <_<

@ShadowWizard But only if you're a mod or RO.

@randal'thor of course, that's what I meant. :)

3:13 PM
@ShadowWizard There are two types of this thing.
Unpin and remove star
Unpin and unremove star

@TIPS huh, might have to check it.... (again) ;)

@ShadowWizard Photoshop is a wonderful thing ;-)

@randal'thor Paint is even better.

You lowly noobs, Inspect Element masterrace :3

@randal'thor nope. No Photoshop, except cropping the screenshot. ;)

3:21 PM
@Quill Mmm yeah, that's more @Sha.
Also n00bs, n00b.

yup ^^

@ShadowWizard You use Photoshop for only cropping an image?

@TIPS lol, of course not... mspaint rulz

@ShadowWizard You use MS paint for only cropping an image?

Used Paint.NET but in Windows 7 the built in Paint is finally fine :D
@TIPS yup. Too lazy to use some browser plugin for that

3:24 PM
@ShadowWizard Do you also use ballistic rockets to grill barbecue beef?

@ShadowWizard What, do you have some userscript that paints people blue here if they're blue on main chat?

he's magic.

@TIPS He should totally drop that and try JQuery instead.

@randal'thor lolz.... no. What @Quill said is correct. :)
@TIPS how did you know?!?!??!??!?!?!111!?!?!!!?!11?!

Wait... not blue here? :( How sad.

3:28 PM
@ShadowWizard That info is classified. We prioritize the stealth of our resources.

looking for spies

@randal'thor Not when you can kick people

@randal'thor So I should be happy because I'm not blue?

@randal'thor but @Oded is not sad. And he's blue. Theory disproved.

3:29 PM
@Catija Or be sad about not being blue here in a room where you are blue?
Preferably while playing blues music.

@randal'thor Don't forget that the entire room is blue...

@TIPS blues don't kick, they ban. Well, usually. :D

@Catija Which one?

Though Shog once kicked @ber and... I think it was my horse... in the Den....

@ShadowWizard you are mistaken. I am grey scale, not blue.

3:30 PM
When does the before-party start? An hour before?

Which reminds me:

@randal'thor This one... the banner at the bottom and all is blue.

SECRET REVEALED! @Oded is brown!!!

3:31 PM
@hichris123 Hour and a half, if my math is correct...

@Catija Ah! Better than the glaring red of tSR ;-)
I thought you meant a room full of mods.

MSE Chat... the place where you really get to see all of the SE staff for who they are.

i think everyone should have their own color.

@Catija Math is never correct. It's maths.

@KutuluMike Why am I pink?

3:32 PM
you are, in fact, magenta

But green is way better than any shade of pink.
@randal'thor Only if you're British.

Much better :D

@randal'thor it's actually not. that's a grammatical mistake made by thinking that just because mathematics ends in an 's' that it must be plural.
mathematics is singlular, so the abbreviation should be singular.
there are not 2 maths.

@ShadowWizard No, they kick so hard you get banned.

3:35 PM
@KutuluMike Do you talk about "physic" as well then?

physics is not an abbreviation.

Or "mathematic" for that matter.

@Catija Right, but when does the before-party start? :)

@hichris123 What do you think this is?

mathematics is correct but it is not plural. if you're going to chop off half the word, just do it.

3:35 PM
Maths is short for mathematics; math is short for mathematic.
Anyway I thought it was U you guys had issues with, not S?
Oh, wait, it's U and S, and also A.

@Catija A normal day in the Tavern? :P

@hichris123 Oh, I'd tell you what a normal day in Tavern looks like

@hichris123 I wouldn't know... I've not been in here in a long time... and when I had been in here it seemed like a bunch of smoke detector posts and not much else. :D

@Catija That sounds more like Charcoal HQ.

@randal'thor Never been in there, either. :/

3:39 PM
@Catija Intimidating room. Never go.

@TIPS You finished with your finals?

@Catija I started dropping in there a few months ago, helping out with the spam.

@TIPS but what if you love to be kicked? :(

@randal'thor in general when you abbreviate a word you don't just randomly tack on the last letter on the longer word for no good reason.. except 'maths'. it's an anomoly.

@KutuluMike hey, what about me? :-(

3:42 PM
it was like you became john cena

@Catija Yeah, been some time

@ShadowWizard If you really want to... ;)

@KutuluMike Why am I in black?
How dare you?

Poor Mike. Don't forget to save orange for Napoleon.
Or, I guess he'd be Christian over here.

3:44 PM
@TIPS you're not. clearly you are #050505

@KutuluMike OK that fits.

what do you mean anomaly?
Mathematics -> Maths
Statistics -> Stats
Logistics -> Logs
Combinatorics -> Combs
Aerobics -> Aeros
Mercedes -> Mercs
Bellows -> Bells

So I have a question about titles: I was under the impression that the word "question" was banned from titles. Is that true, and is it just on SO? I also spend a lot of time on Biology, and we've had a bunch of questions recently with titles like "Question about genetics" and such.

perfectly consistent, as long as you're willing to completely misunderstand what folks are talking about.
@MattDMo from memory, SO and Code Review

@Shog9 "stats" is valid because it's actually plural. You just made the rest of those up.

3:47 PM
@Shog9 I relate "mercs" to "mercenaries" before "Mercedes"...

@KutuluMike I often do. Definition -> defn, theorem -> thm, and so on.

@Catija that's the sort of misunderstanding that leads to ringing bellows

@randal'thor to be accurate those would require apostrophes. def'n, th'm, etc.

@Shog9 I wasn't aware that bellows could ring :P

@KutuluMike Depends how careful you want to be :-)
I'm looking at a \begin{defn} in a Latex document right now.

3:50 PM
dude, if we're going to take Latex grammar as the definition of English we may as well quit now.

your printer appears to be running low on ink

@KutuluMike So... is that an add-on you're using?

user202362
Have you ever thought, that , what is every step you take, is aiming, towards to your core goal? What exactly, is your core goal?

@Telkitty So... many... commas...

@Catija no, that would be smart and efficient.
I'm editing the page's style sheet by hand

3:56 PM
@Catija We, use, commas, now. Commas, are, cool.
</eleventh_doctor>

@randal'thor I'd say that ellipses were cool except that I'm too lazy to actually use the ellipsis symbol... so they're just three periods. I need Nathan Tuggy's shortcut tool.
@KutuluMike Ah. Not that I'm even sure that such an add-on exists.
