the design that's taking the longest to do is RPG...
@Jin I think the minecraft fad is kind of waning.
Make sure you start him on Peaceful. Those creepers can be mighty scary
@ChrisF Yeah, that's what I get for jumping right in.
@ChrisF Then he might as well play on creative and spare him all the grinding. It's free, too.
"What the hell is that sound? -dead-"
20:02
@radp I'm not saying that he shouldn't crank the difficulty up, just that there's enough to learn without having to worry about being blown sky high
My friend just got a 2009 MacBook for eighty bucks.
Jin
Jin
was tempted to order him an iMac, but i think PC is probably better for kids with more gaming options
@Jin Father of the year!

I'll be frowned upon at my next Apple fanboi cult meeting
woot just got a shipping notice for the PC. looking forward to uninstall all the crapware and scraping off the decals..
@Jin Just stick an apple logo on the cover, no one will notice ;)
20:05
Well, my friend is now asking me all kinds of Mac questions, and I told him:
...wait for it...
You know, there is a great website you can use to post all of your questions and you get good answers in a short amount of time.
For Mac questions, there's http://www.Apple.Stackexchange.com
And for general computer questions, there's http://www.Superuser.com
I didn't even know www. worked for SE sites
Jin
Jin
speaking of Apple.se, I should be getting the design for it soon.
contracted another designer to do it
@Jin Nice
@Jin Why?
Jin
Jin
because he's well known for his iOs/mac app designs. plus i hope he'll tweet/blog about it later, so it will give the Apple site more exposure.
@Jin You don't know what to do for Atheism, you don't want to do Graphic Design and you contracted out for Apple? Getting ready to be promoted to manager?

flyosity.com that's the designer
@PopularDemand I pray to the great FSM every night for inspirations
@Jin - Looks quite capable.
Okay, gotta stop being tired and get some work done!
Somebody needs to add "Is it ok to say 'i' instead of 'I'?" to the FAQ, with the answer "No."
Hmm, that's definitely a dupe..
Ah, not quite, I guess..

Q: Cleanup ruby-on-rails synonyms

PhrogzCurrently, we have: ruby-on-rails × 26940 <- ruby-on-rails2 × 4 Simone Carletti (proposed) ruby-on-rails3 × 465 <- ruby-on-rails-3 × 2212 Helen ruby-on-rails-3-beta <- ruby-on-rails3beta Bill the Lizard♦ ruby-on-rails3 × 465 <- ruby-on-rails-3-beta ...

@MichaelMrozek As usual, those of us who care already know, and those of us who need it won't read it.
:435194 And all of her proofs are backwards, or?
20:20
@PopularDemand I wasn't seriously suggesting it. I just don't know who started the notion that you can lowercase 'I'; I see it all the time in otherwise correct posts
@TimStone Nevermind. That's not in the same face-eyes order as the backward smile.
It was a uh..good try though.
The mystery, as of date, remains thus unresolved -- although the strong suspect of it just being an elaborate ploy to moderately annoy @MichaelMrozek remains.
Man, if this is true, it's a step backwards for Android.
It's not Googley in the least.
What's wrong with it?
Gah. I accidentally glanced at the Youtube comments. I know better
@MichaelMrozek They brought the cheese to 11.
20:30
can anyone look at meta.unix.stackexchange.com
looks like CSS is broken on my Firefox 3.6
other sites look ok
looks fine here
+1
Did you F5? Looks OK to me.
local prob then
but other metas look ok
We'll just /blame @MichaelMrozek
20:33
Yes, everyone look at unix.stackexchange.com, I see a problem too....you might need to post a couple dozen questions and answers and upvote some stuff before you see it
F5 doesn't help
@Tshepang Have a screenshot?
@MichaelMrozek Sounds like bad leadership to me.
@Tshepang it's a problem with your cache.
20:35
lemme restart FIrefox
@rad
@radp same
That's an occasional thing that happens on SE sites.
how to fix the cache thing?
Shift+f5? (or whatever it is in Firefox)
@Tshepang Ctrl-F5/Shift-F5/Alt-Meta-Super-Hyper-Combo×3-F5,cross-fingers
@LanceRoberts so it should go away soon?
20:38
I can't remember the exact fix, I usually mess around with the cache and do restarts. But sometimes I've had to just wait it out a bit.
@Tshepang what does this link give you? sstatic.net/unixmeta/all.css
I've seen it on rare occasion and just refreshed to fix it, I've never had it stick
@radp thanks
F5 didnt work
but Ctrl+F5 does
@balpha u still want the answer?
well, since it works now, that link should look fine :)
@balpha it's one long ugly line
@import url(../Skins/sketchymeta/all.css);.wide-tag-col{width:230px;}#tags-table .answer-votes{margin-right:5px;width:25px;margin-top:2px;display:inline-block;float:none;}#over......
20:41
ugly line is good, because SOIS 404 pages are beautiful
Hah ;)
well, the sstatic 404 page isn't qute as good, but the point stands...
I didnt know there was a distinction between F5 and Ctrl+F5
interesting

Q: What requests do browsers' "F5" and "Ctrl + F5" refreshes generate?

Morgan ChengIs there a standard for what actions F5 and Ctrl+F5 trigger in web browsers? I once did experiment in IE6 and Firefox 2.x. The "F5" refresh would trigger a HTTP request sent to the server with an "If-Modified-Since" header, while "Ctrl+F5" would not have such a header. In my understanding, F5 wi...

I've seen that before; I remember the epic table from that answer
20:44
Ah
Even though I was kicked out before, I have returned!
I actually have serious questions this time though :-)
@balpha why you sharing that link?
I was going to say, you're going to get yourself into trouble. :P
And for the useless not-as-boring-numbers-for-reputation series you love to hate:
can anyone recommended good cloud hosting providers? Anyone have advice / horror stories?

@Tshepang to explain this:

@TimStone Did I miss anything after getting booted? WHo booted me anyway? ;-)
@TheNeedsMoarJqueryException Weren't you requesting suspension earlier?
@TheNeedsMoarJqueryException Depends on what you're looking to do...we use AWS and Rackspace Cloud, and I have no complaints.
My goal is to alienate people with it so it has never a chance to become cool.
20:47
@TheNeedsMoarJqueryException ...Probably not. :P
@radp What's that? You want to be up voted?
@TimStone A downvote works too.
@radp That'll cost extra.
@TimStone Fine! Upvote instead.
No, I don't do that. I'm not part of the up vote cartel.
Just make up your mind, man.
20:50
@MichaelMrozek I was. I'm kidding about the above :-)
Has anyone used "Storm on Demand"?
My mind is clouded by the numbness of my face at the moment.
Wassat?
It's a competitor to rackspace's cloud
"Heroic Support", hah.
I'm about to call them and ask them some tech questions, like if their disk subsystem is RAID5 or RAID10, and about SLAs. If anyone has suggestions on what I should ask, let me know :-)
@TimStone We're with LiquidWeb now for our dedicated boxen, and they really do have an amazing support team
20:52
You might be disappointed on that last point. :P
@MichaelMrozek The table is now slightly more epic.
Ah, I see. I just thought it was funny since Rackspace names their support similarly.
@TimStone Yeah, that's where LW gets their slogan from methinks :-)
Rackspace is "Fanatical"
@balpha Sigh. I once did the typical restart/powercycle bit three times before calling tech support, had the first half of that conversation and then when I finally restarted again to humor the guy, it worked.

Of course, doing so would be implementing one of my feature requests. Problematic

Unfortunately, this is also problematic.
I'll request that @Michael's requests are implemented
Which Michael though...

Bribery, a form of corruption, is an act implying money or gift given that alters the behavior of the recipient. Bribery constitutes a crime and is defined by Black's Law Dictionary as the offering, giving, receiving, or soliciting of any item of value to influence the actions of an official or other person in charge of a public or legal duty. The bribe is the gift bestowed to influence the recipient's conduct. It may be any money, good, right in action, property, preferment, privilege, emolument, object of value, advantage, or merely a promise or undertaking to induce or influence the...
@MarcGravell This is not the random wiki page room!
21:04
@MarcGravell Implement my feature requests and I'll stop spreading those rumors about you and @balpha
Randomness has somewhat disparate meanings as used in several different fields. It also has common meanings which may have loose connections with some of those more definite meanings. The Oxford English Dictionary defines "random" thus: Having no definite aim or purpose; not sent or guided in a particular direction; made, done, occurring, etc., without method or conscious choice; haphazard. Closely connected, therefore, with the concepts of chance, probability, and information entropy, randomness implies a lack of predictability. Randomness is a concept of non-order or non-coherence...

Actually, I'm pretty sure the hotel did not have a pool. Not sure what @MarcGravell was bathing in...
21:06
@MarcGravell Actually, I'm good, but you can fix this if you're bored.
Also, WTF? That message was only three days ago?
I must have misheard the reception desk then; I didn't attempt to visit said pool...
I'm disturbed by how much of a difference there is between the amount of time my brain thinks has passed, and reality.

Well, that sucked.
@TimStone, Storm is not going to work for us. LOL
Why's that?
I think I'll be calling rackSpace next :-)
@TimStone The private networks between VMs are only 100 Mbit
..Oh.
Yeah, and we're doing load-balanced webservers connected via NFS to a fileserver
I think Amazon has 10Gbit connections between its service areas..
Were on VMware now which has 1GBit
OK, calling more providers...

A: How to create iPad Document Preview interface like those found in iWorks for iPad

MosheThe "wrapper view" is the main view controller that will be showing your whole preview carousel. The "carousel" itself is a UIScrollView. Simply create the scroll view and set the pagingEnabled property to yes. Lay it out to the appropriate dimensions by settings the frame and then add it to you...

@MarcGravell Right, but the problem is that the AJAX paging kills the variables that are used for the AJAX paging.
So in some cases the JavaScript errors and the click handler isn't used.
@TheNeedsMoarJqueryException - Seen the Mac App Store yet?
I think it's severely limited.
But there is an incredibly cool app there that is free.
@Moshe I have not, no
e.g. #questions-table has a <script> tag at the bottom, but if you change the sort or page of the questions, the <script> tag gets removed when the new content is loaded.
21:13
@TimStone steps to repro?
MindNode
Great for making diagrams without a whiteboard
@MarcGravell I was able to repro, but not 100% of the time. Lemme see if I can get you a reliable method.
@Moshe looks up I have a whiteboard, hanging there on the wall above my desk.
It's great for making diagrams on ;-)
@TheNeedsMoarJqueryException - I don't. We have one, but I borrowed it from the office manager, and I can't use it indefinitely.
When I was working in the lab at MS's UK HQ, every wall is whiteboard.
You just grab a pen and scribble.
21:15
@MarcGravell that is awesome
@MarcGravell We were talking about doing that when we switched offices, but it never happened :(
@MarcGravell That sounds awesome. Just don't lean on the walls, your clothes might get dirty.
You can see it on youtube - I'll dig it out
@MarcGravell I was in a classroom like that one semester. The class was a graduate course in Machine Learning. Needless to say, we needed all of the walls.
(the video inside the lab is a few minutes in)

@MichaelMrozek Glad I could help. I like helping
and since I did a lot of the DB access stuff, there's a good chance the wall is covered with p/w
21:21
@MarcGravell Oh, actually I was a bit wrong about this one...hrm. Anyway, it's reproducible. Go to Kev's user profile, click "2" under his list of answers. Click one of his answers. Click the browser's Back button to return to the profile. Get activityPageSize is not defined. loadActivity is being called, but I guess it should be loadAnswers.
@Moshe the company I worked for worked with MS to develop a demo app for the UK surface debut
I didn't work on developing surface itself
Don't be modest, inventor of Surface Technology @MarcGravell !
and they got my name wrong on the video :(
but then, Jon got my name wrong in the latest print of C# in Depth too :(
@MarcGravell Oh, he did? Where? I should demand reps from him for that typo..
Let's make this clear. I did not make a typo: my name really does end with a "c". Don't correct it.
@TimStone first few pages - acknowledgements

Q: jQuery and AJAX?

the penny
@Zypher Oh; you replied to the wrong message :). The back of the US penny changed in 2010, I just noticed now for the first time
i odn't believe you !
and oh yea i blame @marc for that
22:53
Oh, I didn't notice that either..
Do pennies no longer cost more than a penny to make?
I also didn't notice. then again I never use pennies, or change for that matter
I despise change.
@TimStone There's a word for that, you know.
