@drachenstern sleep well! FWIW, new servr's load is only 0.3. Old server's load is 5.9 =o

But that would only affect someone hitting the homepage at 7pm central or later such that it needs to refresh. I believe.

Jin
speaking of twitter, interesting results if you search for Stackoverflow and Quora

@RebeccaChernoff Ah :) But yeah, I figure it's returning you HTML for some reason (since the JSON parser always complains about a "<"), so if you solve that I think it'd take care of all the YSoDs that I've seen, minus the single-site, no-theme flair NPE.

@Josh Yatta!
speaking of Yatta! I'm gonna walk the dogs in this sub freezing weather and I'm going to bed. l8r

stay warm

6:02 AM
@drachenstern G'night

@Josh I have a HUGE jacket :D
@TimStone you sir, should sleep </admonishment>

Ug. New server just decided to auto-update itself. I'll be back in three hours ;-)

I don't know why, but this is how her profile page looks to me

I slept earlier.
@YiJiang Hahah shakes head :P

6:04 AM
...

@YiJiang too much freetime
3
@RebeccaChernoff if you were to ban him we would probably look the other way for like five minutes :p

@drachenstern Hey, it's either that or watching model trains cars moving round the track or giant oys squashing airplanes

@drachenstern Yeah, I'd turn my head to the side.

Why the hell is "Ruby on Rails Index" following me on Twitter?
ffs
btw, the reason I haven't left is apparently I must hear Susan Boyles sing
so says the wife
waiting on pages to load, etc

6:06 AM
Heh

she was on some interview program, I did not expect that brogue to come out of that face/body

@TimStone the latter is [status-completed]

@RebeccaChernoff \o/ Nice

Creating venn diagram with train tracks is fun

Alright, I'm out. Nite, yo.

6:17 AM
G'night

So waddya think, great idea, right? I should use OpenTTD for all my future graphing needs

Naturally.

amazing video from queensland yesterday

@DanGrossman Wow, that's insane.

What was the timeframe for that video?

6:31 AM
dunno

7:20 AM
hmmmmm
I don't have a good feeling about leaving this code running overnight, something may blow up when the world wakes up, traffic is higher and I'm still asleep

A: Inline css value in javascript

Anii tried getComputedStyle like : var elem= document.getElementById("body"); var theCSSprop= window.getComputedStyle(elem,null).getPropertyValue("background"); alert(theCSSprop); its not coming! insead if i give as height! i am able to get the value.. but i am not able to get the background

> its not coming!
(Insert dirty joke here)

8:12 AM
I knew something bad would happen. Found a bug in the node-mysql module where it tries to escape parameters for a prepared statement by caling .replace on objects that don't have a .replace method. This in turn crashes the node server.

8:49 AM
The fix is adding the .replace methods obviously.

getting bored of /review, they need to make it more like google image labeller, or balpha's SO game

(200).replace(2,5) = 500.

@radp It is already doing a check that the object is not a number or a boolean, as it doesn't need to escape those for SQL. Tomorrow I'll figure out what it WAS trying to call replace on, but just to get my server back up I just checked if the object had a replace method before calling it, and made a bug report.
sleep time

Q: jQuery Animate & CSS error?

Kyle RNevermind, I managed to fix it :)

Can someone look here and tell me who they see at the bottom of 'All Time' askers? meta.stackoverflow.com/tags/status-completed/topusers

@Benjol Popular Demand, but you might be seeing yourself :)

@radp, I am, that's why I wondered, because there's a monster drop off in rep between me and Pop
So I'm guessing it just automatically adds me for comparison?

@Benjol yeah, you're shown in the rankings no matter what apparently

9:29 AM
@RebeccaChernoff, you woke up already, or you're night-bot kicked in? :)

Q: delete your question if you don't get any usefull answer and re-post it? will it be closed?

01After asking this question Mark answer as "not answering the question" and seeing its duplicate I realized that its high unlikely it gets implemented. So I was thinking that if you don't get any useful answers you should delete your question and re-post it with more details. You should also add ...

Jeff's cranky today.

10:16 AM
@radp, I've seen worse :)

@Benjol When he unleashes the giant 's'?

And with people who post comments a line at a time :)

11:02 AM
Man this sucks... the copy slowed waaaaay down :-(
Still ~362k files to go
I've been waking up every ~2 hours to check on it, I'm gonna be fried today :-(
oh well, back to sleep...

@Josh That's... a lot :)

Q: Stack Exchange chat blocked under "Gaming" classification

SathyaNote: I'm not sure if there's anything much that can be done, but I vaguely recall @Jeff mentioning about bringing up incorrect website classification(I can't find his quote now) on Meta, so I'm posting this anyway. The root domain for Stack Exchange chat seems to have triggered the web filter a...

Ahahahaha hahahahha ahahahahahahahahahahaha
Not laughing about the OP, but merely about the fact that maybe WebSense gets it right after all :) :)
(I immediately had to think about our "I can't hang out on Chat, I have to work" conversation yesterday)

@Pekka Oh crap, I think my school also uses that. :(

@YiJiang Maybe the team will be opening a back channel :)

I managed to get a blanket se exception here ;)
Just for me :)

1:33 PM

still ~320k files remaining to go
that's horrible
2 hours ago, by Josh
Still ~362k files to go
this old, failing server is going to be a pain in my ass until the bitter end huh?

yup

@Josh It's hanging on, doesn't want to let you go!

LOL, awww, isn't that sweeeet...
I can't wait to find out what rm -rf /. actually will do ;-)

@Josh 15hours to go then :)

@Josh It might not get very far if it deletes rm along the way :P

1:38 PM
maybe it heard me joking that I was going to try doing evil things to it after I finished migrating everyone off, and thus it's slowing the rsync down exponentially :-(
@Benjol yeah, ug. And 21 minutes until clients start calling again. "I thought you said it was going to get faster? It's the slowest it's ever been right now!!!"

@YiJiang: but rm would still be in memory, so it would continue running until it terminated...

@ircmaxell I know, I know...

:-P

Pretty darn obvious, once you think about it

well, but that's not how some operating systems work (like MS, which locks the files)

1:41 PM
the sad part is, I'm not going to do any of those fun things. I'll really just shutdown -h now and leave it for a few weeks in case I need anything off it
but I can dream ;-)

yawns ...Still need to do timesheet, crap.

tar -czvf . - | ssh host "tar -xzvf - /home/foo/backup" <- tar a tree over ssh

Let me help you with that:

Chat: 28.5 hours
Forza: 14.25 hours
Userscript work: 10.5 hours
Oh and don't forget "Billable time: 2 hours"

:P

and to think that was just yesterday!

1:47 PM
Dude... Billable time: 41 hours
Chat and Userscript work count as Research&Development and Continuous Education... :-D

There ya go!!

(Of course for various quantities of honesty)

ok taking drastic actions. I decided I don't need this mail it's backing up so I moved the directory to a new location on the source! rsync is very confused but I think it will speed things up
thousands of messages like:
 file has vanished: "/home/mail/gitlinfamily.com/josh/.Old/cur/1278875694.M870851P28428.df02.smart-safe-secure.com,S=7719,W=7934:2,Sd"

lol

woot, down to 199k files!
I should have done that before I started, I can move my own mail later, didn't think of that

1:56 PM
Hey Josh

Hey there Fosco

School tomorrow, gosh!

@Josh new avatar.. is that a starred flag? lol.

@Fosco It's the new MSO emblem, apparently
They decided on it while I was asleep yesterday night :|

Amazingly, dark blue + orange works surprisingly well, fancy that

@YiJiang I do miss my company's blurple though...

WIP: dl.dropbox.com/u/1722364/Garden/garden.html Restyling Ivo's js garden
2
If you want to, you can open up that page and set it to refresh every minute or so to see me work

Cool!
Huh I didn't know you could do 2. toString() or 2..toString()
I always used parens (2).toString()

@Josh I prefer that, more readable

2:04 PM
well more like (2).times(function(){ //...

Well, wouldn't 2..method() and the 2. method() create a floating point instead of an integer?

@ircmaxell I don't think js makes that distinction

Yeah AFAIK it just has one type: number
but, I'm not positive about that

I prefer (2).foo()

Please, I'd rather you guys star the actual Garden page, the one I have there is just a static version I'm using to construct my style

2:10 PM
2..foo() is more like a "look how cool this is"

oh ok

@radp reminds me of ruby... 2..10 means [2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10]
(.. is the "range" operator)

I don't care for that range syntax

yay for range()

to easy to misconstrue a decimal as a range or vise-versa

2:12 PM
@ircmaxell I like Prototype's better: $R(2,10)
@ircmaxell Agreed

That, range(1, 2), etc...

A lot of ruby is clever but could be much more clear. But it's not nearly as bad as perl ;-)

Even worse is when people try to turn JavaScript into Ruby..

HAHAHA

Ruby is clear if you know Ruby. Perl is just never clear...

2:18 PM
I liked reading the first page of an Haskell tutorial online. Much of the functional fancy stuff can be brought word for word to Python
{ (a,b,c) | a <- [0..10], b <- [0..a], c <- [0..b], a^2 + b^2 = c^2 } vs ( (a,b,c) for a in range(10) for b in range(a) for c in range (b) if a**2 + b**2 = c**2)
(cue in bα showing just how wrong I must be)

Q: can you "su -" in mysql?

xenoterracideIf I have root on a mysql database and I want to drop privileges to that of a normal user, without using their password can I do it? if so how? think # su - username on unix.

@drachenstern Maybe I'm being daft, but I don't get the answer there..

@TimStone but you do understand the question right?

Yeah

Yeah idk either
1
A: Should questions from Oracle Overflow be migrated here?

drachensternI see @BenV's point and don't disagree. However, what about the option to either A) "copy the questions over one by one by user" or B) can SOIS move individual questions from a SE1.0 site to a SE2.0 site at all? If so, then my second option is to move over individual questions on request ... ...

might be easier to start at the end of the comments and come up

2:27 PM
^ Can anyone explain this?

Q: How to compare performance of two versions of a function?

bernd_kI just saw this function definition: create function dbo.f (@a int, @b int) returns integer as begin return case when not exists (Select * from t1 where t1.col1 = @a) AND @b > 0 then 1 else 0 end end GO Seeing a not exists I thought attention full table scan ...

@YiJiang explain what? a hash href? that's normal
or so I would think

That's a link with a inline code element there, and when I tried to inspect it in the HTML tab, Firebug tried to decompose the function named in the code element into it's native code component

@YiJiang That's so great

So the question then becomes "why does firebug try to compile a <code> block?"

@drachenstern Decompile, actually
Hmmm... I wonder what happens if I change it to something like, say, jQuery?

2:31 PM
ooooooh

@YiJiang I guess somebody hooked an inbuilt function directly as a listener or something.

Really... very weird.

damn you error creep:
Dec 15 '10 at 22:36, by drachenstern
Uncaught Error: HIERARCHY_REQUEST_ERR: DOM Exception 3
How did this return? grrr

2:46 PM
ah, those mods jumping up and down the activity list without actually doing anything
silently attracting attention

@radp Hehehe... Grace executing her super silent ninja assassination?

@YiJiang is she here? freaks out

I think Haskell is just made for @YiJiang
> So calling error is a little like pulling the handle of a fighter plane's ejection seat. We're bailing out of a catastrophic situation that we can't deal with gracefully, and there's likely to be a lot of flaming wreckage strewn about by the time we hit the ground.

@balpha Hmmm... cool, I recognize the iconset used there

Under 150k files remaining! WOOT!
The end is in sight

Yay Josh

@Benjol ??

@Rebecca Your gravatar came back to haunt us, shortly after you said gnight

3:02 PM
came back?
where did it go?

jumped up in the queue as if you'd said something
then disappeared again

My gravatar comes to me in my dreams and tells me to do terrible things. I tell him no, but I'm getting weaker

lol

@MichaelMrozek Does he make fun of you for losing at Scrabble? ;)

3:11 PM
@MichaelMrozek Aw man, I've already used my vote allowance for the day!!!

@Fosco No, I take care of that all by myself while conscious
I should probably make a move, I forgot about that

I think that for every 5 stars that are awarded to any user in chat, they should get one more star added to their daily alotment

@Josh You seriously ran out of your daily votes? You should star less

@Josh I would star that, but only if you star me back 5 times

@MichaelMrozek I seriously did. Last night was a funny one
@balpha sure!
goes to create 4 more sockpuppets

3:15 PM
@Josh Sounds like you're just a star slut. I'm saving my stars for the right person

@Josh What would I do with them all? |:

LOL

@RebeccaChernoff Give them to me?

@RebeccaChernoff You could decorate your office!

I NEED THEM

3:16 PM
Stars look great on flags...
see?

@RebeccaChernoff Sigh, out of stars...

@RebeccaChernoff Watch it. I was going to make my gravatar a screenshot of an "oy" which was starred gratuitously...

I don't think I've ever hit a star limit.

@Josh Looks like a flag.

3:18 PM
@RebeccaChernoff That's sad!

The Flag of the United Taverns of StackExchange.™

I never hit my star limit before like 3 days ago
I swear it was greatly reduced

@Josh About my fifth time already

because I don't think the conversation in here changed at all in the past 3 days...

Somehow always collorates with amount of @RebeccaChernoff activity here

3:18 PM
Well, somebody has been spamming stars as of late...

Or more specifically, the amount of 'oy' she says

I don't star Oy s anymore
It was my New Year's resolution to stop starring Oy's

I star them twice to compensate
It was my New Year's resolution to counteract everything Josh does on M?S(O|E)

@MichaelMrozek s/SO/MSO/
I'm civil and rational on SO ;-)
eeerp! server load over 30, BRB

@Josh Duty calls :D
Anyone mind looking at my WIP of Ivo's garden again and comment on it?

3:21 PM
Once I was helping a newly-hired friend out with his company's Linux server he was supposed to admin, as the only "techy" guy in there.
His website had average load times of half a minute.
I asked him to see what the load average was.
He told me, "it's fine, see? 60%"

@Josh I saw an answer on my UI Q. Was that your UI person?

(after he learned the load average is not a percentage, he rewrote the system from the upside down, and the load average dropped to below one. AFAIK he didn't get a raise.)

@radp Poor guy... here, take this unsung hero badge, and give it to him the next time you see him ;)

@radp Hopefully he learned a lesson about the virtues of talking on chat.MSO instead of working hard

@YiJiang Argh, I have the choice of prioritizing the rsync, which will speed up the process of moving everyone to the new faster server and solve the slowness problem but causes immense load, or deprioritizing the backup, keeping load lower but prolonging everyone's pain. I HATE THIS SERVER AND WANT IT TO DIE A FIERY DEATH!

3:25 PM
@YiJiang oh, I've done that already.

@radp Yikes
@Moshe Nope, I haven't asked him yet

@radp Hmmm? Why?

@YiJiang Nice work. I like the darker blue and the improved highlights for code

sighs
Why is it so hard to get people to want to switch version control?

@TimStone people like what they know

3:30 PM
@TimStone email and tarballs always have worked! even Linus used them! for Linux!

Heh

Hey, I just started with github.

@YiJiang grammar correction:
> Now, both these calls return the exact same thing, a newly create object which has a property called method which is a Closure
newly created object

@Josh Right, I haven't been doing a good job at copy editing Ivo's stuff

@YiJiang I haven't seen anything else, but, I wasn't reading for grammar
I just happened to see that one and thought I'd mention it
Yey, under 10,000 files! The end is almost near... except this has taken so long I probably have to run a second rsync when the first one finishes, >:o

3:46 PM
@Josh: segfault. Sorry, try again

@ircmaxell you are meannnn!!! ;-)

:-P

791 files!!!! bites nails

you should've really used jQuery instead of rsync
