Q: Display tag excerpt when asking a question

BarryI have seen a few posts that highlight the fact that the some tags are being used incorrectly e.g. this question here regarding the assembly tag. What about the idea of displaying the tag excerpt on the Ask Question page? With some text along the lines of of "These are tags you have chosen, are ...

@radp Great idea!

I'm kinda afraid though
People on gaming have been fairly consistent using the game-rec tag
I'm afraid reading this tag excerpt when asking would result in them not tagging game-rec instead of them not asking their question.

Q: Writing Socket Servers in PHP is it good idea?

EddsstudioIs it good idea to write Socket Servers using php?? here is how to article: http://devzone.zend.com/article/1086 question: What is different from writing socket servers in other languages like c, c++, python, ..? how about security? speed? "Socket Servers normally run continuously as a se...

4:03 PM
"but I didn't tag it game-rec!"

@radp I don't think people are quite that slow

@radp I think the tag excerpt should make it clear that if you need to use this tag, then you're doing it wrong

@MichaelMrozek Removing the "make community wiki" checkmark failed to kill the community wiki police ("just wait for 30 answers!" "let's make futile edits!"). All the meta discussion against "one answer per post" failed to stop people from asking one answer per post, from SO users no less.

the community wiki police needs longer to die than just a couple of weeks

@radp Those were both cases where the UI didn't indicate "this is bad"; you had to know why CW was removed or have seen the meta discussions to get it

4:06 PM
it's been around for 2 1/2 years

ok something's seriously wrong here. I brought the ethernet interface on the old server down and brought the interface on the new server up with the old server's IP. Now I can't SS into the new server... ARGH

did you plug in the cable?

Did you enable those services on those interfaces?

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Oh, it lost my default route

Q: How can you avoid using the mouse?

Demian KasierYou are more productive when using shortkeys to do stuff and NOT using the mouse. But in this gui time where all programs encourage you to use the mouse, how can you do without. are there helper programs to ease moving around the screen with the keyboard? @RebeccaChernoff is going to love this ^

who reads hebrew? trying to make out a shirt. it reads (doing the right to left thing) Shin Lamed Vav Mem (using wikipedia for the references on the names) .. is that Shalom?

Yes

4:57 PM
dumb question I guess

@Moshe could confirm better than I

I'm pretty sure I'm reading the shirt correctly

Shalom () (Sephardic Hebrew/Israeli Hebrew: Shalom; Ashkenazi Hebrew/Yiddish: Sholem, Shoilem, Shulem) is a Hebrew word meaning peace, completeness, and welfare and can be used idiomatically to mean both hello and goodbye. As it does in English, it can refer to either peace between two entities (especially between man and God or between two countries), or to the well-being, welfare or safety of an individual or a group of individuals. The word is also found in many other expressions and names. Its equivalent cognate in Arabic is salaam, sliem in Maltese, Shlama (ܫܠܡܐ) in Syriac-Assyrian ...

yeah it was more of a rubber ducking exercise
I guess
Knowing my buddy it would make sense for him to have that on a shirt
I swear I smell like my dogs right now, I'm tempted to go home and shower at lunch :|

dl.dropbox.com/u/1722364/Garden/garden.html Done for the day, will continue tweaking tomorrow. Comments welcome.
TODO: Add style for ul and ol, pending HTML changes by Ivo, throw in some images, and maybe tweak the heading color. White is just too boring for everything here, hmmm...

5:25 PM
@YiJiang Awesome work Sir.

Readability, bah... the spacing of paragraph elements with headers need to be tweaked
@Fosco The content is not mine - I'm just working with the CSS

I know.. saw it before.

:445455 Hid all of the so that they only show on hover
Will ask Ivo to change the text to something more obvious, like #top

wasn't there on hover either, but it wasn't a main menu item.. i assume only the main points have one
i.e. "Best Practices" under "The Prototype" doesn't get one.

@Fosco Yeah, the minor headers don't have those

5:28 PM
You're quite the style master.
oh well, off to best buy... gift card burning a hole in my pocket.

feb 10th huh? interesting
On CDMA I don't think there's any way to use voice and data at the same time, is there?

5:52 PM
Yay iPhone on Verizon.
It would be awesome if they would have waited and then released the iPhone V.

that's not returning spam on the linked image is it?
AT&T on top, Verizon on bottom.

@Moshe I'm glad I didn't buy an iPhone for myself last year :-)

did @YiJiang goto bed for the night?
@Jin are you out for the day too?
@RebeccaChernoff >_< can you interpret/decipher pretty pretty pretty please? meta.dba.stackexchange.com/questions/130

Jin
6:22 PM
@drachenstern yes?

@Jin was gonna ask you a style question but then I found an example to ripoff somewhere else
but for the sake of asking, in case you already have something premade just lying around :p ... know the twitter search box? (I know, everyone's doing it) ... just duplicating that more or less

Jin
what about the twitter search box?

why anyone on Verizon would use an iPhone is beyond me... Android kicks its ass all over town.

I'm duplicating the look and feel of it

Jin
6:37 PM
@Fosco which android?

Most :) the HTC Incredible, the Samsung Fascinate (my phone), the Moto Droid 2...

Jin
@Fosco which phone do you think non-techy users will prefer?

depends on how tech-stupid they are... I think the usability is very similar now.
but I've always thought it to be stupidity to limit yourself to your current capabilities.
you can always learn.

Jin
i've been wanting to play with the win7 phone, but no one that I know has one..
the live tile concept seems interesting

I'd like to see one too... epic fail sales numbers tho =\..

6:45 PM
So somehow I'm logged on Meta Gaming, but not on Gaming.
or at least, I was until a few seconds ago.
← is back on Windows where he was getting kicked every 3rd minute on SE chat to see if the issue is still there.

Jin
@Fosco did Microsoft ever release the sales number for Win7 phone?
@radp you should bat signal @balpha

@Jin I'm not sure if they did, but I read some estimates somewhere that were not good.

Jin
@Fosco can't be as bad as Kin lol

Is anybody noticing the gravatars on the right not updating with new messages?

@Jin It happened mainly during the holidays when I had a very crappy connection; I still think there's something messed up with my session data.
@RebeccaChernoff Well, you noticed, I noticed too, ...

6:48 PM
@RebeccaChernoff Looks OK to me

@RebeccaChernoff no, they look like they're ok to me

refreshing fixed. Not. Yes.

I've noticed in other rooms more than in here, but figured I'd ask in here anyway.

@RebeccaChernoff No need to rub it in, LBMG
:P

Hey @Rebecca I am considering that 10k challenge on ServerFault...
I think it's a freaking long shot, but maybe I can do it...
Where was that blog entry again?

6:52 PM

@drachenstern Thanks

@RebeccaChernoff it's working for me...

@radp |:

@Josh yuppers, I'm gonna play the home version of the game, and I'm where you are now roughly, so let's see how far I get by not playing and how far you do get by playing. I have a beta I'm playing in ;)

LOL

6:56 PM

@Josh awesome!

@RebeccaChernoff It'll be a major challenge for me, but, it might be fun :-D
In other news: old server's average load for this time of day: 2.5 - 5.0... New server's current load: 0.05!!! \o/

@Josh Is anyone actually on it?

@MichaelMrozek Yup. 37 accounts, 35 of which are email only, 2 of which are email+website
The old server never should have had the laod it was experiencing. Something is seriously fsked up with it
a year ago there were 37 website+email accounts on the old one. I moved almost all of the websites off to a new server, but left the email alone because I didn't have a good migration path

@Jin I played with one - it's nice.

7:07 PM
@MichaelMrozek The past few months even just email was too much for the server, so I got a SAN from our datacenter, created a new VM, installed a fresh cPanel install, and copied all accounts over. Now balance has been restored to my world! \o/

I'm getting tired of buggy old Firefox, maybe I should give Chrome another try. Anyone using the latest Chrome? Feedback?

@LanceRoberts IDK if I'm using the latest, I'm on v8.0.552.224 for Linux x86_64, and I have no complaints

I've used Chrome since it was first released. (:
I use the dev channel.

but I only use Chrome for chat and SE sites

I'm on 8.0.552.224 for Windows - which I see is the same as the Linux version number.

7:11 PM
by the way.

The only thing I've got against it is that it occasionally causes a BSOD. Though it's speed and general goodness make up for that.

I know I missed this, but what's the purpose of stackoverflow.com/review ? How can I contribute?

@Moshe Read poor post, facepalm, then edit/comment/flag/downvote/act.
then move onto next.

Q: How to review? Can we agree on a review 'policy'?

BenjolOn the review page, there is a one-sentence guideline on reviewing. I think that as the number of reviewers increase, it is going to become increasingly necessary to come to some kind of agreement about a standard way to handle the different 'cases' that arise. I'm not sure if 'one question to r...

@radp Okay, thanks.

7:20 PM
OK, on Chrome now for SE stuff, we'll see how it goes. Sure wish they'd fix the autologin stuff so it really worked.

Jin
@radp Wall-E will play Rovio in the Stackoverflow Movie

@LanceRoberts hm?

@LanceRoberts I find it works very well for me...

Chrome is \o/

@Jin I so wish I could star this

7:21 PM
@LanceRoberts I wish they'd fix the reassignment of posts after a migration ;)

@Josh You're out of stars? :P

@Josh I starred it, and it was an amazing feeling

@TimStone I used 95% of them up last night, LOL

shakes head

Jin
i thought that SO movie thread on meta was closed? but apparently it's open again.

7:22 PM
Autologin works fine between a site and it's meta, but otherwise I get to login everywhere.

@Rebecca now I remember why I have ~2k rep on SF and was afraid to try and earn 10k more. These questions are difficult! 99% of them are over my head, heh

@radp I tried a few, got to get back to work now.

@LanceRoberts Global login works fine in Chrome o:

@LanceRoberts There's a tool to test that. For me (in Chrome) it works fine

@Josh Only 99%? It's more like 99.9% for me ;)

7:23 PM
@ChrisF We I do play a Sysadmin on TV...

@Josh That's what you get, going and setting goals for yourself.. shakes head

@LanceRoberts only at first if I understand what you're saying, but honestly the cross-domain should catch up after the DOM is fully loaded. If I login from a new chrome on a stackexchange and then goto a different SE subdomain it loads the dom then says "welcome back, refresh to see page"

I thought that was because the page was cached
then after the fact it checks for your login

Jin
bahhh. i finally was able to answer one unanswered question on SO, and as I submitted my answer it said the question has been deleted already... sigh

I hate it when that happens.

7:39 PM
@Fosco, I always hit the 'Questions' button so it will reload, but it only works for Metas. This is the third browser that it hasn't worked on, so it's not browser specific. It's just vaporware.
I've now found that Chrome doesn't have a ReloadEvery option, so that will really limit it for what I want. Hope someone whips that out sometime.

There's an extension for it. Google!

I got the Reload extension, but you have to hit a button, it won't let you time it like the Firefox addin.

Q: Is there a way to batch create DNS slave zones on a new slave DNS server?

JoshI currently have a DNS server which is serving as a master DNS server for a number of our domains. I want to set up a brand new secondary DNS server. Is there any way I can automatically have BIND on the new server act as a secondary for all the domains on the primary server? In case it matters,...

7:44 PM
@RebeccaChernoff You get a star for that, thanks.

Like I said, there's an extension. Google. (:

@RebeccaChernoff Look at that, a star on something of value! That's a dangerous precedent to set in here

I did, I guess they weren't smart enough to get their page to key off of "ReloadEvery".

Soon we'll all be starring things of value, and then who will star "oy"? Who?

@MichaelMrozek I disagree with your recent assessment ;-)

It's not a mascot.
It is the flag of the United Taverns of Stack Exchange.

I <3 Raleigh :-D
@drachenstern enjoy it

Jin
@Josh you live in Raleigh? I love Raleigh
I may move back to Raleigh this summer. Currently in DC area

@Jin I actually live outside it, but yeah
I'm in the RTP area. I moved here from MA, and love it

Jin
7:53 PM
@Josh I used to work in RTP, but lived in north raleigh for almost 20years

If you do move back down here let me know, I'll buy you a beer XD

(Well after you get the Unix site design up for @MichaelMrozek, then I'll buy you a beer @Jin ;-)
@Jin I didn't know that!

Jin
@MichaelMrozek in that case, i really need a 27" Apple Cinema Display to get the Unix site pushed, I'll put that on @josh's tab too.

7:57 PM
@Jin What kind of stuff did you do at GSK, out of curiosity (if I'm not being too nosy)?

@Jin It will be at the bottom, below my own Apple Cinema Display. Meaning you may have to wait a looong time ;-)

Jin
@TimStone are you a GSK manager???

Hahah, no. :P
