Q: Chat Enhancement - Browser Plugin for Linux Users

George EdisonMe and a couple of other people have been hard at work to bring something brilliant to all Linux users who frequent the chat rooms on StackExchange sites. Introducing... chromify-osd! As you can see, the plugin allows browser scripts to create libnotify messages. In fact, when used in conjunc...

@RebeccaChernoff ----------------^
We have enough of it working that it's actually usable.

@radp: I'm catching up to your Meta score :P

I just realized it probably would have been good to post the userscripts.
Oh well.

@GeorgeEdison Awesome!

12:31 AM
Then again, people on meta != people using chat generally...tis weird.

@RebeccaChernoff I think you posting chat userscript stuff here probably makes more sense

another day, another rep cap avoided
\o/

Let's all band together and upvote all of radp's pos...wait a minute

There needs to be a badge for renaming questions titled "RegEx Help". I'm sure I've done it over 100 times.

12:45 AM
ruh roh.

@radp It's ok, it says "Quora", not "StackOverflow"
Apparently that guy got in trouble for that HIT; clearly I need to start one that says "Upvote all my posts on stackoverflow.com, my name is @RebeccaChernoff"

Anyway, this is a great point to enforce vote anonymousness.

@BilltheLizard I think it is called Copy Editor. (;
3

@RebeccaChernoff Oh, is Copy Editor that specific? :)

details schmetails!

12:50 AM
That problem is more widespread than I thought. Tons of people have the badge for it!

Dumplings = win. Being technically done with this code ticket = win. ...Someone is messing around with the star list, I'm not sure if that's win or not. :P

Whoever starred all those should just be kicked

Yeah

blames @Pekka
2
We all know that's the only reason Pekka ever joins

12:56 AM
I would normally blame Chacha, but he's not here. He probably did it from the transcript

And oh look, hi @Pekka! (;

Rejects blame resolutely
These unfounded accusations are an outrage
Hi @Rebecca! :)

yay 2,500 SO rep precisely.

@radp downvote time! wheee

@RebeccaChernoff that is not true
I occasionally participate in the conversation.

> Low answer quality score [80] – Community♦ 2 hours ago
Huh?
Is this some new functionality?

@GeorgeMarian ?

@MichaelMrozek if you could star stuff from the transcript, this chat room would be littered with them

@Pekka You can, it's in the post menu

12:59 AM
@radp That's the comment attached to a flagged question.

@MichaelMrozek No waaaaaay

I mean...you can't. At all. Nobody even try

@GeorgeMarian Low answer quality has been a great feature on SO from day one
harharhar

@MichaelMrozek I won't.
(Off to buy a hot dog)

12:59 AM
@GeorgeMarian weird, Community's activity feed shows no comments :)

You can star things from Orbit, how great is that
Although that takes all the fun away, I won't use that

Feature request: make @MichaelMrozek an owner here so we can bother him about clearing stars.

@radp Who is the owner of this room?

@Pekka TylerChacha

Ah, I see

@radp Yah, and apparently Community was last seen in August. :)

@RebeccaChernoff is a mod here, she can clear stars
Let the nagging begin

We have a number of fairly young users here, don't we?

I'm not really sure I see the point of removing stars.

TylerChacha is 16 IIRC
There's Maxim Zaslavsky who's only 12 (!!!)

1:03 AM
@RebeccaChernoff think "oy"

I mean, unless it is in the list on the right...but once it isn't who cares?

@RebeccaChernoff History, history cares.

@RebeccaChernoff I do when I look for funny images and the such between the 3k starred messages

Crap, Jin just zoomed ahead of me in WwF.

WwF?

1:05 AM
I'm sure the people I @-reply are thrilled to see my enthusiasm and dedication in fixing the spelling errors and bad constructs in my messages.

Words with Friends
@radp It always brightens up my day.

@TimStone ah
@radp I can totally relate, I'm an editor too

I especially like it when you type out messages on character at a time, as to alert me en masse. Makes me feel acknowledged.

@TimStone you're welcome

\o/

1:08 AM
@radp how's the book of rchern coming along by the way?
Anything new?

@Pekka We need to put in a chapter about webapps.
That'll mean refactoring chapter 0 a bit.

@radp Fair enough

but it's 0208 now so it'll have to wait.

@radp yeah.

1:09 AM
@RebeccaChernoff hey, you are the evangelist. :|

@radp I'd appreciate it if my chapter about the VCs remained largely untouched, that was a lot of work

@Pekka Obviously.

@radp Although it's a bit of long winded, but that's what VC funding is

@radp one of my titles (:

@Pekka actually having to mention SE is an opportunity to expand it.

1:11 AM
@radp true, good point

I wanted to keep it simple and not go into SE but oh well

maybe a 3rd chapter
@radp yeah, let's see where it takes us

Talking about the Book of Rchern?

@YiJiang yeah

the holy Meta battle of NTI between Her and Robert must be documented.

1:12 AM
@radp sounds interesting

"And NothingToInstall became WebApps, and Her smile became a straight line."

@radp :)

anyway -- gnite.

@radp Night!
Same here, I'll call it a day too soon
Night everyone!

G'night

var patterns = [];
patterns.push( { 'name': 'Google', 'pattern': 'google', 'var': 'q' } );
patterns.push( { 'name': 'Live', 'pattern': 'search.live', 'var': 'q' } );
why does this create some weird array where the 0th element contains the objects

@DanGrossman Eh... what?

I don't know... I get `[ { name: 'Google', pattern: 'google', var: 'q' },
{ name: 'Live', pattern: 'search.live', var: 'q' } ]`
and if I do a for (search in patterns), search is '0' when cast to a string

@DanGrossman Yeah, so? It's an array of objects

why the square bracket around the whole thing, and wy can't I do a for..in on it

@DanGrossman Please do not use a for in loop to iterate over an array
for in loops are used for objects exclusively. Also, the square bracket simply means it's an array

1:24 AM
apparently I can't if I wanted to
whoa
53% packet loss to linode
somethin's going to crap

Hooray for server maintenance that blows right past its scheduled window and is still happening, over 6 hours later! \o/ Oh, wait... no, that's not right, that's not right at all!!! :-(

@Josh that never happens

@Zypher nah, never. it's not happening to my server tight now. no, not at all ;-)
How goes @Zypher?

ehh not too bad
oh wait eagles lost
SUCKS

:-(

1:35 AM
yea although i'm not that suprised our defense has suuuucked all year and the O line only looked good cus Vick kept escaping ... he was too banged up to really do that

At least they didn't lose as badly as the Chiefs did earlier, heh.

So...how's the weather y'all?

@RebeccaChernoff freezing over here in NC

@RebeccaChernoff Brilliant

1:37 AM
-9°

I don't think it broke 34° here at all today

so oh so cold

Around 27° here. Hmmm...

@Zypher not compared to my family in MA, no :-)

haha

1:38 AM
we are under a winter weather advisory but I have seen no signs of snow, pffft
How about where you're at @Rebecca?

Wahoo, successful conversation derailment!

i really need to proof read before i hit post not after

and it is 26 but feels like 18.

@RebeccaChernoff Yeah, I figured I'd let you have that one. ;)

1:40 AM
Thanks (;

@Josh yea that was a sad game couldn't watch it ... i was expecting a much higher scoring game

@RebeccaChernoff T3h 3vil rch4n h45 5h0wn h4r f4c3!!1!

Hm, now that I'm done that god awful report..what to work on next..

@RebeccaChernoff I'm not a huge sports fan, getting me to talk about weather instead of sports isn't difficult ;-)

1:45 AM
@Josh Same :P

@TimStone minecraft?

Awww, <3 sports! (:

@RebeccaChernoff 18, YUCK
@RebeccaChernoff Yes, I know LOL

Meh, it's just a bunch of people jumping around. Or something. It's been a while since I did sports...

2:00 AM
does jQuery have an AJAX request which automatically updates an element, like Prototype's Ajax.Updeter('element_id','url')?

@Josh Nope. Just roll your own

OK cool, thanks
it was for an answer, not worth my time writing it unless he needs it

A: Is there a way to just refresh a PHP include file without refreshing the entire page?

JoshWhat you'll want to do is update the header using JavaScript. Make the cart_process.php page return either the new contents for the header, or just the new contents for the <div>, <p>, or whatever other tag the cart contents is in. Then, using jQuery, update the contents of that eleme...

he's going to have to rework his code a bit to make what he wants to happen work

Q: Why do so many people dislike C++?

General KBeginners and professional, on blogs, in forums and chatrooms - people say it everywhere: C++ oh dear god no The short form of the question: For what reason is C++ so widely disliked and people are horrified by the imagination of using it for some project? 2:05 AM
Oh, come on.
Be nice, don't hate.

@Shog9 It's really sad about the pointers answer (though I'm sure it's true). I like Ben's comment on that.

Eh...
The sick thing is that students being taught C++ (why are students being taught C++?) shouldn't even have to worry about pointers most of the time. Pointers are far, far less important for C++ usage than they are in C.
But yeah, Ben's comment is dead on - whether or not you're using them directly, failing to understand the concept is damaging in many (if not most) common languages
The persistent confusion between objects and variables in JavaScript could be looked at as a symptom of the same underlying lack of understanding.

Dan is a name. It refers sometimes to the short form of the name Daniel. Dan, or the acronym DAN may refer to the following: ;Persons * Fyodor Dan, a Russian Marxist revolutionary * DJ Dan, an electronic music artist who uses the singular name "Dan" as his stage name * Dan (Bible), one of the sons of Jacob ;Places * Gush Dan, metropolitan area in central Israel * Tel Dan, an archaeological site in Israel * Dan (ancient city), the biblical location also called Dan, and identified with Tel Dan * Dan, Israel, a Kibbutz in northern Israel * Dan River, a river in North Carolina and Virginia, ...

Yeh, I'm only referring to the concept of pointers, not the teaching of C++.

@Shog9 I've been screwed by references more times than I care to count
A coworker just recently made the same mistake I made back in May:

Q: Problem passing a reference as a named parameter to a variadic function

Michael MrozekI'm having problems in Visual Studio 2003 with the following: void foo(const char*& str, ...) { va_list args; va_start(args, str); const char* foo; while((foo = va_arg(args, const char*)) != NULL) { printf("%s\n", foo); } } When I call it: const char* one = "o...

how often does chat send items to the global inbox? lol

2:35 AM
@RebeccaChernoff i think it's every 5 mins or so

@RebeccaChernoff I still haven't worked out when chat alerts appear in the inbox and when they don't
I'm not sure it's deterministic

@RebeccaChernoff Takes a while, because it needs to make sure you don't get double notified

I could probably just find a post on meta with a screenshot instead of waiting for it to give me a red circle...

@MichaelMrozek uh, yeah. You want to be very, very careful when dealing with varargs.

@RebeccaChernoff I think if you dig into the code a bit there should be functions you can call

2:37 AM
It made perfect sense once somebody pointed it out. I've also been screwed about 19 times by functions that return references, when I forget to store the return value in a reference

Anyone know if there's a way to @ping yourself in the chat?

Then it gets copied and the original gets destroyed, when it wasn't supposed to get destroyed
@GeorgeEdison I don't think there is

@GeorgeEdison Typing the message id for an explicit reply works
@YiJiang For example, this message will reply to myself

@MichaelMrozek Good argument for smartpointers, IMHO (but... yeah, then you're back to pointers)

Lemme try that.
@GeorgeEdison Test!
@YiJiang: Thanks! That worked like a charm.

2:39 AM
Oh, good idea

@GeorgeEdison fantastic! Now I can construct a device to send myself a message at a predefined time, and use the notification tone as an alarm clock!
2

@Shog9 That...is the greatest plan I've ever heard
Victory! My loss against @Fosco is less painful now:

Don't worry, George - I'll protect you. Just need your SS#...

George is overreacting, they specifically said it "would not be akin to a national ID card, or a government controlled system". It's just an ID, given to everyone in the nation, and controlled by a department of the government

2:53 AM
LOL, on both accounts.
Hmmm....gotta love Google's PFM. Out of two order confirmation emails for the same order, one was marked important and one was not. I guess the fact that the second one was marked important means that it's "learning."

Any time you get the same e-mail multiple times it must be important. Or about viagra

^ This is brilliant. I just blocked the AI's road vehicles by having a train stop in the middle of their route

@YiJiang I was wondering WTF.
@MichaelMrozek Well, it wasn't exactly the same email. The 2nd one was a modification to the original order. However, that was my thought as well.
@YiJiang BTW, how do you renew aging vehicles? Manually sell and replace them?

@GeorgeMarian There's also auto-replace

3:00 AM
@YiJiang Yah, I noticed that, but worried a bit since it states that it won't issue a warning and I'm still relatively low on funds.
I guess I need to build up some cash, because doing it by hand like that sucks.

@GeorgeMarian There's a minimum amount you can set in the settings that will need to be reached before it starts auto-replacing

Yah, I saw that as well. I figured $200k was a decent minimum to start.

I'm... totally evil.
That's four trucks wreaked like this now

my node.js heartbeat server rox :)

3:05 AM
That's one anxious server. ;)

those are the ajax pings coming in

Yeah, that was a bad attempt at a joke.

when I did this same test using apache it destroyed two Amazon EC2 medium instances
this is running on a $20/mo small linode, with load at 0.2

Oh, wow.
I've heard good things about Linode. I've been considering getting one for myself.

a new Linode 512 is my fresh-development-environment of choice for starting something new

3:21 AM
Right now, a VM on my own machine is my preferred approach. :)

I never quite figured out how to get a VM on my own machine visible to the greater internet

@DanGrossman Configure the virtual NIC in bridged mode. That's how I would do it with VirtualBox.

Then, the likely need to open a hole in the NAT for it.
@DanGrossman "It stinks in here. When do you think you'll clean me up?"

wtf's going on at techcrunch
1-3 quora articles per day every day for a loooong time
this isn't even a tech news piece, it's like the help section of the site..

@Zypher My first thought was the recent Amazon Mechanical Turk fiasco.

ehh it's been going on longer than that

Meh, people get excited about VC funding
> This will be the first in a series of essays on Quora that he will post on TechCrunch.
^ It's a series, no?

...WHY is TechCrunch posting a SERIES Of ESSAYS about any company?

no it's a series to disquise the fact they post about quora about 3x a day

3:31 AM
there's something strange going on

Look at the first comment :P

@DanGrossman Something strange going on with TechCrunch? Nevar!

> Oh, how exciting. They've brought in another shill for the sole purpose of writing even MORE about Quora.

If I see another TechCrunch post on quora I'm gonna puke
Is #Techcrunch 's new year resolution making #Quora more and more popular?

3:34 AM
lol

@TechCrunch Do you guys have an investment in Quora? You need to stop giving it so much attention. Its not that cool.
@TechCrunch when u gonna stop pumping quora, its nothing but glorified q&a site, u guys are making it sound like some rocket science lol

ehh quora had issues when they got a 10k spike in users ...

3:48 AM

Hi

hi @Moshe

Been a long day
How are you @DanGrossman?

good :)

good.
Working on a few apps and, well, you all know how code can be.

3:50 AM
yepyep

Do you have an iPad @Dan?

no, I don't have any shiny apple toys
do you?

I make iOS apps, therefore I need to own too many iStuffs.

iThingadongdong.

@YiJiang - Hey.

3:52 AM
Traffic's picking up, server load's still good

cool
My friend got his $80 MacBook back today.

Where do we get said $80 MacBooks?

Well he got it used w a dead logic board.
$280 was what Apple charged to fix.
So he got it for $360.
@DanGrossman - wish i knew.

@Moshe Not bad, not bad at all, though the other components probably aren't shiny new either

I'm working on an iPAd UI and having trouble.

3:55 AM
I'd like a few iPads to leave around the house
i can attach one to the fridge and tweet from it

@YiJiang - Yes, but I'll bet Apple would have taken care of that so they wouldn't be replacing it again next week.

Man, any more platforms and Tim Stone Woods is going to explode

@DanGrossman - Working on a kiosk app for iPad, not quite twitter though.

Once the iPad 2.0 comes out with a camera, I can pretend I'm Bill Gates, hang them on the wall, have the camera recognize who's walked into a room and show their favorite paintings
make that an app and sell it for $1000

3:58 AM
12 platforms going to about 15 other stations... man this is madness

@DanGrossman heh, my current app can go for that much.

I hope you're selling a lot, then!

@DanGrossman - thank you. :-)
I need to finish it.
I'm working on the "slide" editors.
And it's a pain.
Where am I supposed to fit a keyboard on the screen while showing the text that's being edited?
