Jin
8:00 PM
I worked on an internal web based Foreasting app. I did asp/asp.net and front end dev/design

We may know people who know the same people, though. ;)
Ah ha, nice :)

Jin
I used to program... seems like eons ago.

@radp How so?

@TimStone Inspect element for, say, "enable desktop notification".
(TheX wanted to try chat's notifications on FF4, which should support them; however no link appears apparently.)

@radp Oh, they won't work in FF4.

8:02 PM
Out of curiosity, can Firefox install as a limited user?

It specifically checks webkitNotifications, which I can't imagine is where the API is located in Firefox.

@MichaelMrozek got a sec?

@Josh Hmm?

@MichaelMrozek Do you know if it's safe to use badblocks -n on a mounted ext3 filesystem?

wipes Firefox and attempts reinstalling.

8:04 PM
@Josh I've never even heard of that before. I would think yes as long as it's just scanning and not modifying anything, but I take no responsibility for bad stuff that happens

Thanks. I'll ask a proper question :-)
actually, I'll just umount the filesystem :-p

That would be best :). It sounds from the man page like it needs to write to the disk to do the test, so you probably need to

yeah after re-reading that I questioned this part:
> if you think you're smarter than the badblocks program, you almost certainly aren't

:D
I'm trying to remember the command that has like 19 "YOU WILL DIE!" warnings in its man page; it was one of the drive manipulation commands

AHAHAHA

8:10 PM
I'm searching through IRC logs trying to find when I mentioned it, and I found this quote I apparently said about SO a long time ago:
> SO is very educational when it comes to learning what people don't know

Good one :)

Ah, it's hdparm:

@MichaelMrozek I am never going to use hdparm again!!!!
I wet myself just reading that manual page...

I'm considering e-mailing the devs and asking them if EXTREMELY DANGEROUS is more or less dangerous than EXCEPTIONALLY DANGEROUS
2

Hrm. My node.js server crashed again, ran out of file descriptors (ulimit at 1024). It's not reading any files, so I guess they were over 1000 network sockets or something.

8:18 PM
@MichaelMrozek I'm not swayed. Needs more "CATASTROPHIC".

@TimStone You should try out a couple of those flags on a drive and see if you're still unconvinced

@DanGrossman Ouch :-(

I upped it to 32768. I'm discovering failure mode after failure mode actually putting node.js into production.
Stable for the moment...

I'm glad we get to learn from it too :)

LOL

8:22 PM
1100 connections per second right now

wow
what is this server doing???

logging web stats.
he posted his node.js source yesterday too.. (score!)

it's running that real-time dashboard for ~1000 test sites
receiving the pings from people viewing their webpages
every person every 20 seconds sends their status (reading/writing/idle) as long as a webpage with the code is open

Wow, crazy

it's not complicated, but node.js is not very mature, it and most modules are pretty unstable

8:36 PM
status-completed
!!!!
I love it @statuscompleted

hi-five

@DanGrossman I've been wanting to play with Node.js for a while

@statuscompleted haven't talked to you in a while, not since you had some evil SQL in your name. How goes?

8:38 PM
wow it's holyvier? hi.

I'm at job now, i started my new intership last week
Lot's of WTF in the codes, but we are cleaning it up at least :p
btw, I am still looking for a place to do my other intership in few month after this one is done
if anyone know some company that are interested in Montreal

Hi @statuscompleted

@statuscompleted Awesome. How is it so far?
enjoying the work?

Ya, it's nice
but its a really special environment
I'm in a marketing company that does publicity has their only business

8:45 PM
When you come to work at 9 AM, there's techno music in the office

Hah, iChat recognizes /me.
that's funny.

@Moshe I swear I told you that before ;-)

@MarcGravell Could you hop over to Chat Feedback @ chat.SO if you have a second?

@Josh - I know you did. It's the first time I tried it.

@Moshe Someone please star this, I'm plum out of starz
2

8:46 PM
@Josh I plum can't starz my own post.

@TimStone going there now

Anyone? Help a poor guy who's plum out of starz.

There you go :p

Heh.
@statuscompleted - He was referring to my picture, I think.

@Moshe I know
I did it on purpose

8:49 PM

@Josh not so much.

8:51 PM
All I can give you is my lolz

@Moshe unstarred

@radp Why?

...just kidding.

HAHAHAHA

Erm from 3 to 1? Why?

8:52 PM
I is redunant

It's the star wave!

Jimbo attracts anti-stars
I poked through unicode a little while ago looking for a representation of an antistar, and found the perfect one, and then realized it's the one they use for pins

@MichaelMrozek IF EVERYONE WHO READ THIS JUST GAVE ONE STAR WE'D BE AT OUR GOAL BY NOW!!!! COME ON EVERYONE, STAR THIS!!!

Where do you generate those Wikipedia like banner ?

8:54 PM
@Josh Lucky I have photoshop open now.

@Moshe redirects complaint to @RebeccaChernoff, who will reverse your face with it.

@statuscompleted - Google Images + Arial Bold in photoshop

@Moshe You mean you're not generating those using jQuery?

@Josh - Nope

8:56 PM
Watch out every next message that will come from @RebeccaChernoff will be started :p

It's so painful to be out of stars and watch people squander theirs on messages like "..."

there's a star limit?

@RebeccaChernoff How do you do it? Why is everything you say so star worthy @Rebecca? Even when you don't say anything at all, people star it!!!
2

5 per person

@Josh - This one's for you:
...wait for it...

8:57 PM
@Josh i think it's cus it annoys her ... we are moe like 10 year old children than adults in here

@Zypher this is very true!

Actually...

we only get 5 stars per day? oy!

Okay, I'll bring it back, was going to switch to "star now"

@Zypher There are 22 - 22 year-old children.

8:59 PM

@Moshe ...Oh I so want to star that for the Oy Vey! button...

@Shog9 i'll buy that too ... oh to be 22 again

@Josh fine, When I have time - and you have stars - I'll work on something.

@Zypher 21 now. 21 year-old users.

@Shog9 I am not a 22 year old child! I'm a 7 year old trapped in a 31 year old's body

9:01 PM
My ex is definitely 13 going on 30.

@drachenstern LOL

incredible... 4 stars for "..."

@Fosco - How about starring good ol' Jimmy Wales? eh?

I guess I'm the only one is is <20 here

@statuscompleted - Nope.

9:02 PM
@Fosco you think that's incedible? chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/…

11? We can top that easily. Arm stars and wait for the next oy

Anyone here good with UI design?

@Fosco bah, give me a sockpuppet and it'll be five

Oy

Awesome.. I'm honored to have the #3 spot :)
2

9:03 PM
It is common knowledge that Oy, is the most starred message

@Zypher Ugh. ):

@Zypher Tried that.

@RebeccaChernoff that is not the right phrasing ... and i reject it

Q: iPad app UI help

MosheI'm making an iPad app that, for our purposes here, runs a slideshow and has a settings panel to configure the various slides. The app uses various templates for the slides and as such must have an editor for each slide. I was using a UITableView for the editors, and offering UITextFields and su...

I love how my comment has MORE votes than the post itself

same here XD

@RebeccaChernoff but less than the actual votes
The post has 15 votes, +13/-2
Your comment has 14.

At any rate, the comment has my vote, the post hasn't.
I use the starred list :P
and still am considering making a tumblr out of it.

9:08 PM
A tumblr out of oys?

lol, that would be cute
additionally, I really MUST be back to work, so @me for useless things ...

@me
...waiting...

Anyone know a good tutorial on installing GnuPG for a windows 7 user?

@Josh - I'm going to pull an @Zypher: superuser.com

@Moshe you're doing it wrong it should have been
superuser.com
all by itsself

9:10 PM
Oh, i'm sorry.

pfffft. Ok thanks :-)

have you checked the GNUpg4Win site?

And really, @Zypher - I'v been ..waiting for it... for answers on UI for a few days and all I get are 4 lousy upvotes.

ah that sucks

9:11 PM
At least I said I couldn't help ;)

@ChrisF - Yep, you did. Thank you.

If I do think of anything I'll let you know

@Zypher Ah HA, I didn't even know about that site. Thanks!

@ChrisF Thanks

I really should find out more about the iPad and iPhone/iPod, but I can't afford the necessary kit and there's no need for it at work at the moment.

9:14 PM
...wait for it...

Maybe I need to make a case for an iPad version of our appplication ;)

@ChrisF perhaps. iPads are available for $100 less now

hey @Zypher did we ever redecide why we had decided it was important I send said items to your inbox?

Though they've just put VAT up in the UK (17.5% -> 20%) :(

...wait for it...

9:16 PM
hmm i don't think so will have to go and find the thread and re-read got distracted by ... work @drachenstern

I'm sure that was it :p ;) [I recall a phone conversation with Jeff interrupting our discussion]

@Moshe lol (and I don't do that very often)

@ChrisF Well, I was approached by someone last night. He said he was a professor at a college and had a research budget he hadn't touched in years. He wanted to know about the iPad. True story.

What did you say?

shame that I have photoshop open, I need to do some graphics work freezes to look at @Fosco's message... but I keep making Wikipedia style appeals instead.
I told him about iWork for iOS and "yes, it can read PDFs".

9:18 PM
✪y
2

@Fosco I ... will... not... star...

I'll do some "research" on it... heh heh.

@Moshe why would you star it? It already has one

heh

@drachenstern it had one..

9:21 PM
That was me

oh, well the point still stands

* hints * the star is in the message

@statuscompleted I know

I'm going to see Tron tonight in IMax 3D.. I hope it's worth the $15.

I'm going at some user group meetup around my area ... I hope it's worth the 0$ it cost. :p

9:23 PM
I still haven't seen that...for shame.

Anyone know about Joel Spolsky's company, Fog Creek?

@Moshe I know that it exists?

@MichaelMrozek Erm, no internship-wise

@TimStone you're not alone

@Moshe They make FogBugz

9:24 PM
Is there a way to get the child to show if the parent DOM element is display: none; ?

I saw their site

@Moshe what about thier internships?

@Moshe I use FogBugz
and Kiln

@drachenstern I need to get more done so I can spend more effort getting out more. :P

What are the skills qualifications?

9:25 PM
@TimStone tell me about it

@drachenstern How would it makes sense to be able to do that ?

@Moshe you generally have to be a mad wizard coder, better than like 90% of SO, and be in the NY area

(redacted^2)

@drachenstern don't have to be in NY area

@statuscompleted idk, I'm thinking of how to structure something, wanted to verify that I couldn't do that before I rip out some plumbing
@Zypher don't? Hmmm....

9:26 PM
@drachenstern You have to own a unicorn too.

but willing to move here (and the'll put you up for the summer)

@Moshe you're not rchern, you realize that right? :p
2

@Zypher But they don't do remote internships, do they?

@Zypher oh, well one's as good as the other

What if we are just wizard ? You think that would work ?

9:26 PM
@Zypher ah

@Pekka no not that i know of

@drachenstern o:
I love how I randomly look in here and people are talking about me. |:

@RebeccaChernoff Imagine the things we're saying when you're not looking

@RebeccaChernoff At least it was a compliment this time

oh we know you are looking at the @ mentions

9:27 PM
@RebeccaChernoff he's trying to get things starred for saying oy :p

@MichaelMrozek I'd rather not...

@RebeccaChernoff You definitely are the #1 celebrity in this tavern

@Pekka No they offer housing though

hey @RebeccaChernoff did you ever find time to get around to my request re: translation from Robert earlier?

@Zypher nah, people in here are using rchern sometimes (;

9:28 PM
@Moshe right, that probably means a lot in NY

@Pekka - True, but I have other options there
I just wish I was a better coder, not saying I'm bad.

@RebeccaChernoff that's when we don't want you to know what we're saying... I mean... damn, me and my big mouth!

@Moshe Are you planning to apply?

@RebeccaChernoff why not? It's the "right" name no? @Josh back me up here! :p

@Pekka - Thinking about it. I'm not in college yet, planning to start this September. I don't know if that counts.

9:29 PM
@drachenstern I would if I didn't have my foot in my mouth ;-)

@Josh oy.
5

I should get some interns...

@RebeccaChernoff No,
I will NOT star that.
Ugh, too late.
Noooo!

3!

9:30 PM
schemes

@Moshe as of right now i think you need to be a junior and above to apply

DO NOT STAR
6

@TimStone well will you get me one or two? I prefer them about 5'4 and redheaded

@Zypher - I saw that, but I thought was not absolutely required.

but that also means you have time to work hard and improve before applying

9:30 PM
It doesn't even matter... Whatever she says is golden :)

@Moshe Good luck if you try!

Thanks.

Surely one of the more enjoyable experiences in the industry, at least Joel makes it sound that way :)

@drachenstern That might be a tougher order to fill. :P

I used to go to camp, but the one I went to closed down. I think I want a real job now.

9:31 PM
@TimStone nah, they don't have to be that big :p just over 21 ;)

lmao shakes head

@drachenstern 21 ... high standards taht

Preference will be given to students between their Junior and Senior years.</quote>

I thought that width needed to include padding ... is that not so? #CSSQuestion #NotSOWorthy #InappropriateHashtags

9:32 PM
does that mean no freshman or sophomores?

@Moshe possibly
Ask

What languages do they use there? I don't even know that.

@MOshe i would email jobs@fogcreek.com and just ask

@Moshe NOW that is a much better question

Okay, thanks,

9:33 PM
I bet you could google around and maybe find out

@Zypher, @drachenstern @RebeccaChernoff Thanks.

Even better is READING this .
bah, foiled again

@drachenstern - I read that, assuming the link was the internships page.

So does this line not tell you anything?
> An ASP to PHP compiler

It does.

9:34 PM
I reckon that means you should know three languages at a minimum

What's @Marc up to?

ASP and/or PHP

His Gravatar is lurking around in the top right corner

and that's before javascript/css/SQL

Looks like he's working
I hope I didn't distract him from anything important by @ing him

9:35 PM
So I need to brush up on my basic web stuff and then work on learning ASP

@Moshe That means, if Juniors or Seniors apply, they will probably get the positions before Frosh or Sophmores

@drachenstern SQL isn't a real language. The L is just there to confuse people.

damn, the interns there almost match my salary </sob>

@Moshe But like @Pekka said, Ask.

@Shog9 it's not a real third generation language, to be sure
@Josh bah, why trouble him with the truth?
ok people, I'm killing precious time ... ciao

9:35 PM
@drachenstern Later

Thanks though.
I do know one thing. They won't pay anyone, intern or not, senior or not, to chat here on MSO.
me haz teh workz to gets dun. </lolcat>
Thanks @drachenstern @Pekka @Josh @Zypher @RebeccaChernoff @EveryoneIMissed.

Why you should be careful copying and pasting code: http://aviationhumor.net/combat-kangaroos/

@Moshe No harm in asking and applying... This blog post may give you some insight into their mindset when looking at applications: joelonsoftware.com/articles/SortingResumes.html

I couldn't apply because off this line : "Permanent legal right to work in the United States. Because student visas (J1, F1, etc) are time-limited, we regret that we can't consider interns on student visas."

@radp Hahah, that's great
Ah yes, people on student visas are a pain in the ass to give internships to.

9:38 PM
Student visas are better than no visas I guess

@Pekka - Thanks.

Anyway yes. Yay for the EU!

also they want to be able to hire you - or at least make a serious offer after the internship if all works out

I would love to get an intership outside of Canada once I start university

While a site is in private beta, who does the moderation?

9:39 PM
is it that hard to find interested company ?

@oKtosiTe RebeccaChernoff

@radp I've a sneaking suspicion that that's an urban myth

@ChrisF Still plausible, even as a TheDailyWTF article.

@oKtosiTe No one

@oKtosiTe The SE staff if reqd

9:40 PM
@ChrisF Robert (and I assume @RebeccaChernoff now) check in

@radp Plausible, yes

@statuscompleted Probably not. I'm sure there are plenty of companies that aren't necessarily interning-to-hire that would go through the hoops required to make that work.

@MichaelMrozek of course

@oKtosiTe yep Robert and Rebecca plus some of the staff here ... do you have a problem on a private beta site?

If it's about the question going to meta I already saw it and migrated. If it's about something else, what's up?

9:41 PM
@TimStone thanks

@Rebecca, well that AutoReload extension for Chrome doesn't completely work, hope they fix it up sometime.

I don't have it installed anymore, but I don't remember any problems with it. Boo.

He mentions on the page that it has problems with the new dev version, but for me with 8..., it doesn't reload all the pages, though it does seem to reload some of them.
I've noticed that even though I have the Enthusiast badge on most every site, I can't seem to get it for Area 51. I think I'll just give up on that one.

@LanceRoberts I'm downright suspicious of that badge; I swear I have it on sites I never visit
I check the calendar and it claims I've been there for 30 days though

I'm really getting tired of "attachement" in my codebase :(

9:56 PM
@Pekka - Great read, thanks.

SO users are apparently much older than I thought
looks around self-consciously

Does anyone know how Fog Creek does the animation when the mouse hovers on items on this page:

@MichaelMrozek, The one I really hate is the Fanatic badge, since it causes me to have to keep checking on all the Meta sites, and then I miss one day, and get to start all over.

I know it's jQuery.
I can't find it anywhere. I don't use Firefox, but I'll bet firebug would work well here.
I have to go, my ride leaves now.

@Moshe indeed it would

9:58 PM
I try to leave Firefox up for the weekend, but it's crashed many times before I get back.
I think the Web is buggy.

Question: If I wanted to discuss whether some of the newer SE network sites merited a different interpretation of the 'If you're not comfortable with someone editing your questions, this may not be the place for you' FAQ, should that be done on meta.stackoverflow, meta.stackexchange or on the new site in question's meta? It's too general a point for the latter.
Seems like meta.stackoverflow, since meta.stackexchange is more about the technical software behind the network, right?

If it covers more than one SE site, then use Meta.SO.

Question: Where can I find the FAQ about what you have to do to get a SE site commitment fulfilled?
I can't and can't find it
