@bad_coder apparently no one noticed.
Someone found it funny? No idea why . It's gone now

@JourneymanGeek would the normal procedure on this question be to remove the textual duplicate and reclose it with current mechanisms?

3:47 AM
@Wasabi its easier to get rep on main tbh - since it can be on any site

@Spevacus I generally don't make such requests unless either 1. the question has been bumped by organic activity, or 2. a duplicate target needs to be changed. Otherwise, such a change will unnecessarily bump the post, as well as wipe out the public notice of the fact that there was a consensus to close it long ago and make it look like a recent unilateral decision (unless someone bothers to check timeline or revisions).
Since I posted that, I'm less convinced on the "bumped by organic activity" part, but the rest of the message (including the rationale for not ordinarily doing so) still applies.

5:12 AM
hm
I just saw some political spam on meta...

@Aibobot Posted by an account with the name of a political speaker

yup

In any case, I think it's probably best to have that person's name off our homepage

"Spammer? I'ardly knew er"
apparently I was so surprised I forgot to nuke the account
Done

Pilotical spam? Vote me for the precedent!

I'm tempted to edit that vote to veto
But that would be mod abuse :D

s/mod abuse/hilarious

Sometimes its the same thing :D

7:33 AM
Depends on which mod is being abused, if you ask me.

7:51 AM
Mod abuse!
abusing @Meta because he's easily abuseable
:D
@bad_coder what did the comment say?
@Wasabi and broke FOX twice.
Well done for finding a way to break the bot, it's pretty hard. ;)
I know of a way too, but it's far more complex.
Involving endless loop...
@Wasabi depends what exactly was the assignment. If it was "capture a bug and record the volume of the noise it's doing" then the grade is correct. If it was only to record the volume, it's weird indeed.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask F word and told a guy to drop...

@bad_coder the mods are (surprisingly) not omnipresent :D
so... just flag it, and we'll take a look

How do you decide Cross site spammer? I usually see 2 or maybe 5 accounts with neglgible rep..and sometimes at rep1 with no posts

if its obvious spam, its probably a spammer.
there's a few proposed mechanisms to deal with them but mugging a CM's the most effective one for now, in moderation

8:36 AM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask gone
@SonictheMaskedWerehog gone

@MetaAndrewT. gone

did...they forget to add the spam link? It's clearly spam, but there's no link...

10:08 AM
@RyanM I don't think the people that are tasked with posting spam are supposed to care about the quality. Sadly enough I assume anyone who brought up hey boss, a link is missing in this ad was told that feedback was not appreciated.

10:44 AM
@RyanM there is a link:

Maybe added after posting, during the grace period.
@rene meh, images aren't really NSFW.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask yeah, must've been a grace-period edit, since metasmoke doesn't have it

@RyanM yup. common spammer trick. Some also don't post links at all in the spam post, and count on the links in the profile page.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask I beg to differ but appreciate that you allow a lot.

10:48 AM
@rene never said I allow. :)
But there are worse things, the spammer went easy on us. :D
hmm... @rene how come this showed up here even after being deleted already on the site?
I see my report also showed, so guess it's global thing with manually reported posts...

11:09 AM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Can you follow deleted posts? Or is it rejected (10K rep+)
Hi Meta Andrew, you might answer as well

@SonictheMaskedWerehog long time bug, wasn't it reported before on GH?

@ShadowWizardWearingMask Nope, I just reported it
Not a long-time bug

BLTN. ;)
@QueenieGoldstein yes, I can. Same way I can edit the deleted posts.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask if I tell you I can do it at 10 rep, would you DUPE my question?

@QueenieGoldstein not sure? If you can see a post, you can follow it. That's the current behavior.
At 10 rep you can see a question you answered, even if it's deleted. That's what you mean?
(but you can't see/follow other answers on the question)

11:17 AM
No...say Question has been asked by A, B answered, I visited, saw B's answer>...
after a few minutes B deleted answer
I followed the answer post deletion and flagged it as well

@MetaAndrewT. no happy End (of Line) for you! :D

With the current general behaviour, I have seen that 10k rep below cant flag/edit/follow deleted posts

@QueenieGoldstein hmm... follow should be possible, yes. Not sure about deletion.
@QueenieGoldstein they must not be able to edit, not sure about the other actions.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask for 10k below, posts get grayed out and you cannot follow. I did it somehow today...cookies worked!

@QueenieGoldstein no need for cookies, you can also use direct AJAX.

11:20 AM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask maybe that i dunno
Probably I meant cached
because I pressed back

Well, I can follow deleted posts, though I have 10k and/or mod power

@QueenieGoldstein well it's all about client side vs. server side validation.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask so, edit requests are validated, follow/flag are not

e.g. we can answer closed questions few hours after they're closed, even though client shows no input or submit button.

Ouhh, never saw someone do it

11:23 AM
@QueenieGoldstein should be, yes. Better test it deeper first.

I guess SE blocks while posting answer

@QueenieGoldstein only to deleted questions, not closed. It's by design, from ancient days.

Hmm, but for me, I need coincidences
Ouhh, any meta thread on describing how?

Q: How was this answer posted after this question was closed?

tombull89Question: lot of .exe folders are created on my windows7 Answer: try that... The question was closed at 11:57:57 (according to the hover-over-"x-mins-ago" bar) and the answer was posted at 12:16:35. It's a fairly lengthy answer, so it's possible that it was started to be written before it was c...

Without 2k, you can't edit deleted post because there's no suggestion edit for deleted post, but 10k (or 2k who can see deleted question on their deleted answer) can edit deleted posts because it's applied immediately.

11:25 AM
@QueenieGoldstein the "how" part is technical, you can use the browser dev tools to show the hidden answer form.
Or copy it from open question if it's missing.
Surely userscripts exist that help with answering closed questions. :)

@MetaAndrewT. Can you flag?
@ShadowWizardWearingMask I'll explore myself...never thought about answering closed ones ...

Yes, flags are always available on deleted posts: need moderator's attention

does this work for locked posts?

@QueenieGoldstein keep in mind it's only for few hours after closure.

yes, locked posts can also be flagged for mod's attention

11:28 AM
@MetaAndrewT. question is, if users below 10k rep who shouldn't be able to see the post can flag it anyway. (e.g. direct AJAX request to the server)

Okay, so rudimentariy, I am concluding, for a 10k rep below user...the buttons [follow],[edit],[flag] do not work, but due to caching/AJAX I somehow managed to get it working

@MetaAndrewT. unless historical lock, which prevents even flagging.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask AJAX should bypass that

@QueenieGoldstein nope. Historical lock shouldn't be bypass-able as far as I can tell.

Hmm, because the magic is old

11:30 AM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask I'm assuming the user below 10k rep has posted an answer to a question, and a question is deleted so they can still see the deleted question? I believe they can still flag normally?

@QueenieGoldstein user below 10k shouldn't be able to see the post or the buttons/links, yes.

I'd be surprised if flag & follow is disabled actually, since there's no harm...

@ShadowWizardWearingMask they can if it's freshly deleted/ they accidentally landed to a cached version of deleted answer

@MetaAndrewT. the question? Yes, but question is if the server side check if the post being flagged can be accessed by the one flagging it.

Unfortunately I don't have a case to do science, so I'm not sure then :|

11:32 AM
@MetaAndrewT. Yes it works, navigating from recently deleted answers

@QueenieGoldstein nope, in the instant a post is deleted a blocking dialog "This post has been deleted, click to reload" appears, and after clicking it, the deleted post is gone.

They probably include the full question as well
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Well, this is the main part for replicating the bug
@ShadowWizardWearingMask after you see the message, click edit, it will take you to edit failed page....press back, you can control the answer now

@ShadowWizardWearingMask I usually go to dev tools and delete the whitening layer since it's annoying when I'm enjoying the drama reading a serious discussion on meta...

@MetaAndrewT. Now you know a new bypass that doesnt need dev tools

11:49 AM
Don't like the back button, can't trust it. ;)

it flipped my body :/

can anyone do me a favor and see if askubuntu.com is returning 503 for anyone else?
i'm getting intermittent 503s from it here

@ThomasWard I'm getting offline for maintenance for Super User

i'm getting that for all sites now and apparently NO UPDATES on stackexchange status

How does sdc react to these?
sdc alive ?

@QueenieGoldstein Watching this endless list of new questions never gets boring

@QueenieGoldstein It suffers.
It's switching to other SD instances trying to create a connection to SE, but it can't, so it just fails over to each one until it eventually falls silent.

1:27 PM
@QueenieGoldstein It gets confused and usually requires at least a little human intervention. I did part of it, but it still seems ...confused.

Q: An interesting puzzle in an otherwise boring game

SadieI recently had the displeasure of playing the Xbox 360 game Tower Bloxx Deluxe. You've played a version of it if not it itself; you build towers by dropping floors on top of the increasingly swaying tower you've already built. That's not interesting. What is interesting is the game's city buildin...

@Catija i know what's up
thankfully Nick Craver keeps up on Twitter about stuff

Everything's up now. :P

sounds like failover clusters exploded with bad weights

> We're back up - a voting issue with failover clustering took one cluster down. We're investigating how it got into a bad weight state there.

@Catija it is NOW but y'all should've been faster on things
:P

I... have no clue what any of that means.

Go fix Smokey. :P

I just did! I think.

Rob
@Catija A good failover is faultless and undetectable by the customer. With previous faults this year you are less than three and a half nines - I think Thomas knows of the nines.

2:22 PM
Three nines is still pretty darn good, if they're hitting that.
Most services that cost less than a truckload of money won't promise you more than three nines :-p

WhatsApp is down for hours once in a while.
And they have billions of dollars to spare and thousands of programmers.

Rob
2:48 PM
I don't know about "a truckload of money" - three nines (Enterprise plan) can be had for less than U$20/month, and four nines for 10x that much. Depends upon the size of the truck.

Question is what happens if there's more downtime than promised.

Who's selling four nines of guaranteed uptime for $200/month?

@Catija I am tempted to ask Nick about the different UI his chat has on the tesla...
but the joke about sharper image scared me off :D

Oh, Slack actually does promise four nines...with a pretty large asterisk, though, which is that scheduled downtime doesn't count. Still an impressive offering, though.
Counting their scheduled downtime budget, they promise a bit under three nines (they promise a max of ~11 hours of downtime per year, 10 of which must be with 48 hours' advance notice).

@Spevacus raises hand

@rene *sigh* Okay... you get away with it this time. But if you do it again, I'll focus that picture of yours.

Rob
@RyanM We have the equipment for four nines and 100% can be less than U$1000/month. - 3 nines is 8 3/4 hours per year, so if you're making nearly 2K an hour much better uptime is free; break even might sit at around 1K an hour depending on the deal you can negotiate, especially if you would permit some scheduled downtime (to accommodate
another customer who won't).

@Spevacus the horror ...

Rob
@Spevacus The unblurred version was already posted.

@Rob Nooo, my leverage is gone!

3:27 PM
@Rob I'm not sure I follow the relevance of that second link: a lot of keeping that kind of uptime is processes and multi-homed systems, not so much equipment. Regarding the first link, my experience with Atlassian's ability to keep their services online is that a former employer switched to Slack after Atlassian had a multi-day HipChat outage.
Ah, that's from statuspage. They do, in fact, know how to keep services online.

Rob
1st: we have the setup explained there. The 2nd: that's example pricing, from one of many many choices. --- Three nines is cheap.
My home computer remained turned on for over 10 years, minus a few power failures and one GPU, and 2 HD upgrades.

My experience is that most outages aren't caused by equipment failure, though my home computer is far below three nines of uptime due to hardware failures (including electrical issues) alone.

Rob
This money gun is smaller than a truck, it's handheld, and can hold 100 bills (10K of $100s).
I used to work at a large company that built computers, they hoped that the computer worked when it arrived in the customer's hands and they had a 2 year warranty. Then I quit to lead a far far smaller company, they really hoped that the computer worked when it arrived in the customer's hands (and it did, except for twice), and they had a four year warranty (and ~$10 over the lowest prices).

mag
4:27 PM
@Rob The guy who built my computer charged a 20% comission based on wholesale part prices (that is around 15~20% cheaper then any other options I looked at) and gave me a 3 year warranty
he even delivered to my house - it's a 1 person shop :p

Rob
@mag We had good connections with the Wholesalers, and tried to make over ~10%. We shipped by courier (and the computers arrived in working order), hand delivered and plugged in would be 60/hr (both directions). That was decades ago, before dot.com.

mag
The cost of assembling and installing it was included in the 20% in my case

I built my own 😁
I do kinda want a new gpu but currently stocks of the model I want are thin on the ground

4:43 PM
My laptop is over six years old and still working

@JohnDvorak my pc last pc was about that age other than an upgraded gpu and broken sound card 😁

I use an external sound card. I needed a mic hole and ended up using the other one, too, just because I then see fewer cables

Aww man! I'm wanting to test the bot I made but I need 100 rep to make a chat room. In SF&F I am literally 99 rep. It's killing me. I'm 1 rep away and it feels like that 1 rep is going to be a lot harder to get than it should be

Rob
A few months from now will be the start of the sweet spot for buying, all the bugs worked out, the new new stuff hitting the shelves, and the feature/performance jump from a year and a half ago is impressive.
@mag So he could buy from us and earn over a hundred bucks to plug it in for you - seems like reasonable pay.

mag
5:01 PM
@Rob I don't know how far his wholesaler prices are below normal wholesaler prices, I know I paid about as much for the PC as I would have buying all the parts myself and assembling it myself
As in his 20% cut barely brought the part prices to what I could find on amazon/ebay

if 2>3 and 4>3:
print("haha")

Rob
They must have had pretty good connections for a one person shop. Wholesale prices are offered to registered businesses only, and don't include sales tax. Decades ago it depended on your proximity to Malaysia, Taiwan and Singapore; with large boatloads of stuff filling the warehouses they wanted to turn stuff over regularly - because faster stuff became available for lower prices every 6 months or so. --- It didn't pay to keep a computer longer than 3-4 years because it would be slow.

How do I make a bot account?
I looked it up on SOBotics and It was just answering questions like is it legal and stuff. It just skipped the part where I actually make the account

don't you just... make an SE account like normal?
What part of the account creation process confuses you?

Yeah yeah... and then what happens after I do that?
How do I get the bot to "link" to the account

5:13 PM
@Wasabi just like any other account. Register a new account. Do make sure to do that in a seperate browser and never ever log in with both of them on the same browser

Thank you

you need to obtain chat privileges for that account. Needs twenty rep. Don't do illegal things to get that rep or you will be suspended and your second account nuked.
Suggesting edits is a good and guaranteed way to get that rep. Assuming you make substantial edits.

So where do I make the new account?
I can't in SE
It doesn't give me a sign up button so do I do it in only SF&F?

Did you start a new browser / in private session?

I have 2 edits pending in SF&F for my main account to get 100 rep because I'm at 99 right now
I am in a new browser
I'm not sure what you mean by private session

5:19 PM
Oh boy

Ctrl+shift+N

What?

I suggest dont experiment

So I should use a different browser-like not chrome?

Yes, at a minimum

5:20 PM
better if you use different IP

wouldn't a private window suffice?
... or even logging out

I dunno but someone on meta said that moderators can tally IP addresses

That is what I do at least with my sock and I never ever use my main account with firefox
@JohnDvorak technically yes but keep in mind we have a not so experienced user here ... better be safe than sorry.

So I'm using google for my main.
Should I use firefox for my bot?
I have never used firefox before so it shouldn't know my account

@QueenieGoldstein thanks, but I'm awful at spelling and grammar so be prepared to correct me for the next 6 to 8 weeks ...

5:23 PM
I'll gladly do

I'm going to have to use the same email.

I was not correcting ... I was having fun :(

is that okay?
*?
I dont have a second email

Then make one

@Wasabi The moment you link it...both accounts will get merged

5:25 PM
So it has to be a different one

takes less than a second

woah...this exists!

So I must sign in to SE? or SF&F
There s no sign up button for SE

SF and F is a SE site

5:26 PM
So...
SF&F?

sure, that will give you access to chat.se

Rob
Starboard

Yay!

Rob
Pinning it might be seen as unfriendly.

5:33 PM
So my bot can't ask questions
but can it answer them?

It can ask
but it's harder to gain rep that way

Thanks.
Last part: How do I "link" the bot to the account?
I'm sure I have to do something to get the bot to own the account...

There are no management tools, only common courtesy

?

5:41 PM
It's nice to say in the about page that it's a bot, but no script actually cares
unless there's one that guards against accidental fraud?

Rob
^^ The Bot simply posts into the terminal/browser the same as a human - make sure it's working correctly, or it can be banned; same as a human.

there is an API for bots, but it doesn't lift any restrictions.

5:58 PM
No, I mean How do I connect my bot to the account
It won't just happen by me doing nothing...

You mean, how do you post messages as some account using <language>?

Rob
Isn't there a line in the Bot's source code that says: 'Fill in name and password here:' ?

Rob
So, you edit-in the necessary information, run the program, and hold on to your hat.

pretty much, I suppose

Rob
6:03 PM
Might need to manually intervene on a Captcha.

Hat holding is the under estimated part.

So I put the account information into the code of the bot?
I'm confused how the bot is supposed to use the account I made for it

@Wasabi your bot code does have some setting somewhere similar to github.com/Charcoal-SE/SmokeDetector/blob/master/…
find it and change it accordingly, same for the password.

Now what
I set the email and password
Is that it?

> What is up?

> Lots of air, then less air, then pretty much nothing at all. Very occasionally, a giant ball of hydrogen.

🚽

So I put the password in, and the email.
now what

Now you just have to write the bot

sdc write bot

6:32 PM
@QueenieGoldstein No such command 'write'.

I think you'll have to do it yourself :P

start with from future import AI

that's... almost a valid Python import

lowercase ai?

or you can use this simple module called time (not the usual implemented in languages, the real time-space continuum)

Then, `set.time=14-10-2021` , by then you'd see the bot

6:37 PM
Another idea would be to set up a tensorflow network with 1e6 neurons, wait 20 years and hope for the best
It won't work, but it might be useful to formalize why

or you can get a 2k year old genie
I Dream of Jeannie is an American fantasy sitcom television series starring Barbara Eden as a 2,000-year-old genie and Larry Hagman as an astronaut who becomes her master, with whom she falls in love at first sight and eventually marries. Produced by Screen Gems, the show originally aired from September 18, 1965, to May 26, 1970, with new episodes, and through September 1970 with season repeats, on NBC. The show ran for five seasons and 139 episodes were produced. == Plot == In the pilot episode, "The Lady in the Bottle", astronaut Captain Tony Nelson, United States Air Force, is on a space flight...

It is python
Do I need the bot account logged in for it to work
Also, do I need to run the Python code first for it to work? I'm sooooo close but I've never done this before

6:56 PM
So now that I put the password and email, all I have to do is tell it to start?
like >>go

@Wasabi This room is not a bot tutorial room. Please find a more appropriate place to ask.

Okay. Where would that be?

Oct 9 at 21:37, by Wasabi
Can anyone teach me how to make a bot? '_'

I just asked because many of you guys seem to know how to make a bot, such as rene.

You have been asking here for 4 days.It is getting a bit tiresome.

7:00 PM
I haven't made Rene
3

No no, rene makes bots
she isn't a bot, she made a bot. KennyBOT
So she obviously knows how to set up a bot.
Yeah, okay. I know I've been asking for 4 days. Sorry. But I already have the account and everything so it worked. So seemingly enough, you guys really helped me!

@Wasabi We don't care. Get your own chatroom and talk to Rene

ouch?

@Wasabi This room is for "General friendly chit-chat; general discussions about MSE or the wider network also welcome.". Not detailed instructions and/or tutorials on bot making

yes
So like what your'e saying is that this is the place where I say my power is about to go out.

7:20 PM
@Wasabi Read chat.meta.stackexchange.com/search?q=bot&room=89 and think about whether you are going on and on and on and on and on and on ... about bots ...
15
Q: How do you make a bot on Chat?

PotatoLatteIn many chat rooms, such as Codenames, there is a bot to moderate the room, or to help update things. How do you create such bots? Do you need to make an account for this bot, and then program something that "runs" the bot? Or is there something on Stack Exchange that can already have bots?
