@SonictheMaskedWerehog chewed by Journeyman... OP has bad history already on SFF, and that one on MSE was no better. It's very low quality and will be 100% closed and deleted as well in there. :/
Wonder if "low quality posts" is suspension reason on all sites?

@ShadowWizardWearingMask Yes, it is

Nice, thanks.

@Wasabi I can think of a device that can cause this. 😂
But seriously though, for me it happens when airplane fly faster than the sound nearby.
@Wasabi many many times, yeah.
Sometimes I wait until the fly rest on the wall then... Ending its life gently. ;)
@Wasabi where did you bring the 25 from? You measured it?
So did you find it?

So many deleted answers on uh... that post...

👑

@Spevacus eh, only 4, one by the OP, 2 didn't even address the topic, one more was by the community and meh, I'm not going to overrule it
Comments - there's been multiple reminders about it. If it matters it needs to be in a answer, and I'm going to need to roll in my clarifications to my answer myself

it's normal for discussion to be shut down on mse
2

@user400654 eh, really?

2:01 PM
I expected that post to be a larger fire than it turned out to be, honestly, but people should definitely post more answers and less comments, yeah.

I'd also point out staff can read the deleted stuff

@JourneymanGeek In fact I posted an answer and it was zapped within minutes.

With or without a diamond, yeah.

@Mari-LouA yes it was.
And it didn't actually have anything to do with the letter by those folks, and .... that would be noise.

and it was deleted because?

2:02 PM
Which is literally the only reason something got deleted there.
@Mari-LouA see the line above yours

And all the comments beneath one answer? Were al those comments "noise" too? What about all the others?

@Mari-LouA Least on my part, I read through every comment that I delete

You have one answer with nothing, not a word, while every other post has a strong of comments.

Can review ban be imposed by moderators
?

@QueenieGoldstein Yes.

2:04 PM
How long? any length?

@Mari-LouA so - that particular comment thread was getting heated...

It can be manually specified. The longest I've seen is getting into the multiple year range.

@JourneymanGeek and you decided single handedly that each comment was pointless. each one. I'm not speaking only for myself. There were dozens of comments, the exchange was not heated.
a string of comments... typo

@Mari-LouA If you're talking about the one that has a very large quote block in it, that comment section got very... hot, yeah. All comments are gone on it now, along with the answer itself.

if a person rejects edits and copied the exact same edits, do they qualify for vandalising existing content

2:05 PM
@Mari-LouA You're of course assuming there were no flags, or any oversiight at all or...

@QueenieGoldstein Not sure I followed that. Could you explain exactly what you mean?

Suppose you have 101 rep

@Spevacus and recall asking folks to cool down...

you edited a post and made it look better using mathJax and with correct grammar
your edit gets rejected. And the "rejector" copied the exact same edit

@QueenieGoldstein I'm really sorry but there's another, pretty serious conversation going on... could we table this a bit until @Mari-LouA has her answer please?

2:07 PM
Sure

@QueenieGoldstein Let's head over to the Den :)

thanks you two

Yay!
Internet's back.

@Spevacus no I'm specifically referring to voight's answer meta.stackexchange.com/a/355081/223820 The last time I looked the comments were fine, there was disagreements on both sides but I didn't feel anyone was getting emotional or aggressive

@Mari-LouA Yeah, that one was heated

2:11 PM
There was one word "asshole" but it wasn't directed at any one user. It was used as an example of a term that exists in the dictionary but would be disallowed by Stack Exchange. Which... was a strange example, could have been avoided but I understood the sense. It wasn't attached to any user. Was it that word?

also, there's other posts with significant numbers of comments deleted
@Mari-LouA more that it was a long, circular arguement

@JourneymanGeek I do not see any post where every comment has been deleted.

@Mari-LouA Well, not yet.
But you can either have no moderation, or just ploughing over all the comments, or trying to put out trouble spots
I like the last. And sometimes it does end up that the comments make no sense when you prune, or they just all need to go

@JourneymanGeek like all discussions on meta. They're all circular with very few exceptions but I'll note that I and two other users did stop interacting. As far as I was concerned, I said what I felt was important to point out. These mass deletions are counterproductive, comments and posts. You're shooting yourself in your own foot here.

@Mari-LouA Damned if I do, damned if I don't. You're essentially telling me not to moderate at all.
Which isn't happening

2:17 PM
I'm saying you're going overboard.
2

@Mari-LouA I'm for the most part getting my expected results - and I've made sure any major action I've taken is documented, in case I did go overboard
On the other hand, I'm sure a few folks feel we're not going far enough. Can't win em all

I think your intentions are noble, and I think you want everyone to get on well with each other. I understand that you feel that meta has a purpose and you don't want the company to one day shove it to one side. You're protective, I get it, I do. But it's too much. Just relax a little, wait until a spent match actually produces smoke before hosing the entire forest.

I think we've both seen it on fire. Do we need to get that far?
Or for the wolves to be feasting on the sheep before one starts barking I guess. They could be really shaggy dogs.

@JourneymanGeek I said "smoke". A lot has changed since September 2019. The same mistake, I hope, will never be repeated. But you can't expect everyone to be on the same page at the same time. Like anything new, people need time to adjust and pne way of achieving that is by being truthful and inviting dialogue on both sides. Kill the dialogue and the suspicion and the mistrust will continue. If that's your aim, then continue deleting.

@Mari-LouA actually we had 3 burnt out mods, and no real help from the company.
I'd rather have no mods burnt out, and no need for help from the company, unless they figure they want to handle this.
Not enough has changed - and not all good.

2:31 PM
Gotta go. Lessons. Bye

@rene is there any query to find total number of rejected edits by a specific user with the respective links. Maybe the top 500
I am also looking forward to find highest number of community rejects in the pool of all users but results of the top 500. I found a code
[here](https://data.stackexchange.com/meta.stackexchange/query/160233/) but it is for a specific user. It must be modified to look for everyone. Thanks

`SELECT UserId, SuggestedEditId AS [Suggested Edit Link]
FROM SuggestedEditVotes
WHERE UserId = -1 AND TargetUserId = ##UserId## AND VoteTypeId = 0
--GROUP BY UserId
ORDER BY UserId DESC`

Rob
3:00 PM
Do you want 'OP rejections' to be excluded from the count? For example, this rejection seems wrong / unfair, but it's an ability of the OP to reject unilaterally any edits on their posts; and usually they're not as wrong, as in that instance.

@Rob Yes, I want it to be excluded.
Also, can someone review/dupe warn this

@ShadowWizardWearingMask , yes, I measured it. But that was not this stink bug, it was a while ago in college and I had to learn how to measure decibels and how the frequency changes over time and distance
So I had to measure a real stink bug. Stinky

3:58 PM
Sure @Catija and @JourneymanGeek - keep removing comments of dissent. What could possibly go wrong?
Politely worded, I might add.

It's not particularly kind to assume things that you can't confirm.

Like what, for example?

You have no way to know who deleted a comment unless they say "I deleted the comments here".

mods/employees are people too, and are just as susceptible to being offended by comments as normal users
possibly moreso, since they're quite invested in it

Fine. Then my comment applies to whoever deleted not just mine, but all the other polite, respectful and upvoted comments that I saw disappear on the "Responding to the Lavender Letter" thread.
Such as the user who merely acknowledged the inability to engage when his largely upvoted answer being partially censored. But hey, there's a narrative to push, so off it goes.

4:07 PM
funny (as in.. not really) task of the day: due to various circumstances, got the task of writting a POST action on a .net MVC controller that returns a file given some complex data passed in the request body. The file does not exist on the server and its content are generated on the fly based on the data.
Anyway, since I casually stumbled upon this argument of sort, and I notice one of my comments was deleted too, kindly when you have time please just give me a confirmation of either you somehow found that offensive - something I don't see reason for - or you simply indeed did some branch cutting that resulted in some comments being lost. Don't really care for the comment to be fair, just wondering. So, fine if none answer but you know, had to ask.

iunno. Just seems troubling to me to have an entire comment chain removed, only for it to be followed up with comments from a mod or employee for one side of the argument, like, are we expected to start the conversation again? or are we only allowing people of privilege to share their thoughts on it as if it's the law of the land

@user400654 uhm... that seems inaccurate

unfortunately, i can only see what's still there.

I mean, we could lock the post, sure...

4:21 PM
I fully understand i'm jumping to conclusions, that's just what it is being perceived as. that's why there's blowback against it

@user400654 or people want you to think that ;)

i mean
I think that

Maybe cause they want you to

lol

the reality is none of this fixes the problem
It's just reopening old wounds that were caused by actions that also did nothing to solve the problem
2

4:22 PM
for certain values of problem, sure
Well and?
do we stand by and let the patient bleed to death?

The post shouldn't have allowed answers/comments at all to begin with
if we're just going to delete half teh conversation

oh, that would go well
I think the first confusion is the belief that comments = conversation
boo

> a talk, especially an informal one, between two or more people, in which news and ideas are exchanged.

> Comments kinda suck for any kinda detail or nuance- you might want to gather your thoughts into an answer instead :D

yes, an answer where noone can respond to..
other than through, what, comments?

4:26 PM
I'd also point you at what we usually send for excessive comment,s in part ...
> Comments are intended as brief messages to provide feedback, add minor information, ask for clarification, or discuss the content of the post.
further on, it says...

I'm fully aware of the oppressive way we moderate comments

> Preferring to argue with other users in comments over revising your questions and answers to address their concerns is a red flag to moderators, indicating you may not fully understand the purpose of Stack Exchange: our goal is to provide readers with expert questions and answers, not host discussion or debate
And to some extent, even meta's aimed at expert questions and answers.
And one more datapoint...
our purge comments mod menu has a label saying...
> Comments should be purged when they have degraded into pointless bickering and / or noise, and the entire set is unsalvageable
@user400654 \o/ otherwise its HUNDREDS of comments with no incentive to post answers

Rob
It's very much become: "The token X person" - where one is embraced and defended so no one can say, whatever, but that one person is the only one the majority of the group knows (and hardly representative of aforementioned group). --- It's reverse discrimination, so no one can claim that you're a bad person; and entirely the wrong approach to onboarding. --- Coupled with some censorship, and the medicine takes on a new flavor.

please, I didn't say anything like that.
I just ask that if something offensive was found in a deleted message of mine they tell me so I can ponderate on that and actually take notice if then I agree to not repeat the error in future. If that can't happen, I am fine either way. Will just process the thing as noise, like unexplained downvotes and other similar things.

@Rob on the other hand - We've tried very hard not to delete answers that address the post, I've encouraged folks to post answers every step of the way

4:34 PM
@Νеvеrꭑoꭇе I think i was referring to something else, unless we were coincidentally talking about the same deleted thread

it wasn't meant as a pile on from your message

What are we talking about?

@user400654 then sorry, I thought you were replying to my message

@Νеvеrꭑoꭇе we make an effort to since last year - though unofficial official policy is just to use the canned mod messages
and tbh, if its a small slip, meh
We'll let you know as gently as possible

i've always taken it as, if i've messed up enough such that i'm nearing a ban, i'll receive a warning
otherwise, nothing to worry about

Rob
@JourneymanGeek Agreed, difficult for you, the CMs, and the owners too. A challenge to draw a precisely crooked line that perfectly seperates good from bad - only water can find the lowest level and cut a near perfect meander through the lands on its journey to the ocean.

@JourneymanGeek I got sidetracked by this message, good job ._.

I thought the target room was Trash, not Chimney :)

4:45 PM
Oh, that's a script

I thought the recent discussion on here just got heated and binned, when in fact they were just Smokey's reports XD

@MetaAndrewT. ._.
Ah. It is drama you seek 🤣

I think it's called chimney because the smoke detector... You know, smoke detector...

Yep, for a fun reason.
Though, trying to follow the discussion while being sleepy is not a good idea (well, no excuse!)

look, as I think I said before, I kinda think that while it is easy and other solutions would be pretty hard, no feedback only result in confusion.
In this case my obvious reaction to the disappeared message is not thinking I did anything wrong, but just that mass deletion happened. Was this the case? I don't know. And to be fair, I can't bring me to care anymore, no offense meant. Not my windmill to chase. As I think you probably can notice, I am here basically for inertia so please don't mind me. As I said before, I didn't even came here for the post, just stumbled on a ongoing argument.
Anyway, bye.

4:59 PM
I was testing how @KennyBOT can respond and I think I made him/her tired

💣

Did I hit his "rate limit"?
How difficult would it be for me to make something like @K
*@KennyBOT

Rob
5:17 PM
@Wasabi Approximately this difficult.

Hmmmmm... Did I tire-out Kenny?
I don't think I broke it
@rene, it's not possible to break Kenny, is it?

not really. At least not that I know

So You made Kenny?
It must have been hard
So what exactly does the !!silence command do?

What do you expect it does?

5:26 PM
I told him that and he stopped talking
Is that called an "oops"?
is there a !!un-silence command
or did I break kenny. :(

The bot did what you asked.

So......
Oops?
Oh, so !!Go makes him talk
ah okay

if you are Kenny's owner, then yes.

How did you get him to do that

I made him obey

5:28 PM
I mean, if you read the chat above in Shadow's den, how did you get him to have so many responses
He knows what Rhododendron and Gastroenterology is. I'm impressed

oh, that is some external site that have those words
I simply send the word and wait for a response.
it involves a bit of html scraping IIRC

So, Who exactly is a bot and who's real
In shadow's den

That Wasabi user must be a bot if you ask me.

Hmmmmm...
Then it'd be an advanced bot to have so many answers, @rene
Is FOX 9000 a bot?

All are

5:34 PM
What?
I see that "NordTheLoftyWizard" did the same thing I did with FOX 9000, but I just was messing with Kenny.

Everyone's a robot

So everyone in there is a bot? that means @Mithical @FOX 9000 @Spevacus @rene and @KennyBOT ?

Well, actually... plants such as Rene don't count as robots, but as automatons.

Except John. He is real

@rene thanks:))

5:37 PM
So you're a Bot, @rene (Not serious)

@Wasabi all are, as I said

FOX 9000 seems to be shut off

some are biological and entrusted with their own objectives. Some share their CPU cycles with a host organism. I suppose that makes them technically ... viruses?

is consciousness a virus?

Woah

5:42 PM
No. It's a subsystem.
Fine distinction, but a distinction nevertheless.

This is getting confusing
Does kennybot live here too?
@KennyBOT hello?

6:22 PM
@Wasabi None of us are real. But we're not (all) bots either.

6:49 PM
@Wasabi You forgot me :(

7:19 PM
Oops.
I just beat FOX 9000 at a game of WAG
It took over... like 100 or 200 chat posts but I did it

7:30 PM
@rene I got both FOX 9000 and KennyBOT in a reply thing! I'm comparing how well they know words...

8:20 PM
🚽

@Rubiksmoose Are you for real?

8:39 PM
I know that a moose made out of small cubes is a bit confusing but he's certainly real. :D

Imagine a herd.
Rubiksmeese.
Is there a keyboard shortcut to delete questions?
Another question:
Are there supposed to be two search results for the exact same question in the SE search?

sometimes
when a mistake occurs

9:19 PM
Erm
I can't insert any code blocks into a question in Firefox.
Not the {} ones, but the HTML <>.

lol

@user400654 Huh?
@user400654 It does contain tools. Or did you mean something else?

there's nothing in the tools that... do anything
it's reporting more than anything else

You can't get in the tools. How would you know?

i can get into them on SO

9:24 PM
Never mind, got the code blocks...

@Ollie If that question has an answer, yes.

Can anyone teach me how to make a bot? I'm interested in how they work...

Ahh, cool. Why the lost soul, though?
@Splevacus

@Ollie It's a userscript made by Glorfindel: stackapps.com/questions/8122/saviour-of-lost-souls

Oh yeah, seen that before.
@Spevacus No, the question didn't have an answer.
Is that a bug?

9:30 PM
@Ollie Could you link me the search you used?

Yep.
It was asked by @Mithical
Two results, neither with an answer. And it's not the only one.

Strange.

Report incoming!

If you were plotting to phrase this as a question

Goodbye.
Oh?

9:32 PM
I would tag it
And ask "Why does this question appear twice in this search?"

I was going to.

Awesome. Well then, happy writing. :)

No, I need a new pen. @SmokeDetector?
sdc pen

@Ollie No such command 'pen'.

Can anyone teach me how to make a bot? '_'

9:43 PM
Done, @Spevacus

Nicely done.

Good!
sdc coffee Spevacus

@Ollie brews a cup of Americano for @Spevacus

Hm... have a tag.

9:45 PM
Erm...
Oh yeah. Thanks.
Popping tags...

Withholding an upvote because I feel as though I'd be biased ;D

It's cool.

@Ollie,

Yerse?

Do U know how to make a bot? [+]o[+]

9:48 PM
No, unfortunately not.
My expertise lies around cybersecurity.

?

@Wasabi Nope.

I want to learn how to make a bot since it's cool, looking at FOX 9000, whomever made that one.
Do U know someone who can teach me how to make a bot?

@Wasabi There are some cool people at SOBotics that might be of interest to you. Exercise caution when participating, however, I have no idea how they like to run their chatrooms.

...
Okay

9:50 PM
Ah... I see you don't yet have the association bonus. I suppose participating there would be hard without the ability to do so! My apologies.

Yeah
I just found out
Also the chat there seems to mostly be dominated by a bot
called "natty"

Heh, well trust me, there are a lot of active people there.

Like @SmokeDetector?

Their website seems to have some neat-o info.

Une upvote.

9:51 PM
yeah, but more like FOX 9000, who'd probably be easier to do
@Ollie
Oh, were you asking if "natty" is like smoke detector? Yes.

No, @SmokeDetector is less natty.

does @SmokeDetector work like @KennyBOT?

Or are you, @SmokeDetector?

I believe Natty reports potential NAA's. It appears to be very useful. It also autoflags like Smokey can, but NAA flags, not spam flags.

You can ask it a question like that?

9:54 PM
@Wasabi Pff, nah. Not unless someone with the credentials to log into it is around, in which case, they could reply by using it.

@KennyBOT doesn't work that way, as it seems. he never does anything if he is not pinged as the first thing in the comment
Is it possible to make a bot reply to stuff?
And not just "I don't understand" to everything?
I've never tried making one so I'm not quite sure of their capabilities yet

I believe KennyBOT will post something when a chat message is starred. Dunno if that counts.

How long would it take to make someone like @KennyBOT

I believe most of these bots are open source. You could see what makes them tick if you'd like.

ez once you get the framework built
or, copied

10:01 PM
!!/amicodeprivileged

@Spevacus ✓ You are a blacklist manager privileged user.

@SmokeDetector But is he on the blacklist?

!!/bisect Spevacus

@Ollie That's a negative ;D

10:03 PM
!!/dissect Spevacus

@Ollie No such command 'dissect'.

Oh.

:8586294 No such command 'dissect'.

@SmokeDetector 🚽

The "adding quotes" keyboard shortcut, CTRL-Q, doesn't work in Firefox on Linux.
It shuts down the browser.
To fix that, you'd have to fiddle with Firefox itself wouldn't you?
So...
Could we assign the shortcut to a different key?

10:54 PM
Happy Hour?
As luck would have it, I can't do Happy Hour. Ta!

Rob
@Ollie @Spe is like the smartest frog in Science class, privileged, uncatchable and can not be dissected.

11:44 PM
@Ollie I am always almost startled to death if I hear that ping every Friday night, until I realize Happy Hour :P
