In fact especially when someone is not deserving of politeness, one should be polite.
@JourneymanGeek You can be "polite" and totally destruct someone with that kind of politeness :-P
Yup. And that's a good thing
@JourneymanGeek I prefer to be straight and honest.
Ugh. Were this a normal working day I'd be late :(
@πάνταῥεῖ why not all 3?
Doesn't mean "straight" == "impolite", just honest
00:04
@πάνταῥεῖ Generally, when someone says you can do x, y and z at the same time and you reply with "I prefer to do x and y", it's accepted that you're strongly implying that you don't want to do z...
So. I can go 'welcome to Foo. You might want to add a little more information to help us help you...' or go 'this question is horrible'
@JourneymanGeek Ahhhh, good ol' Foo :) It's time like this that I miss CS
Leven Thumps and the Gateway to Foo is a fantasy novel by Obert Skye that traces the journeys of Leven, a seemingly ordinary boy from Burnt Culvert, Oklahoma, and Winter Frore, a neglected girl, as they seek to find their way to the magical dream land of Foo. == Characters == === Leven Thumps === Leven is fourteen years old and is the grandson of Hector Thumps, the builder of the gateway to Foo. Leven originally knows nothing of Foo or of his heritage. He discovers this information as the story goes on. Leven is an offing, who can manipulate the future, and is being hunted by Sabine (an...

Good ideal. But you never get 100% of everything you want, and it's hard work to even come close, so there does have to be some relative value assigned, in a pedantic philosophical sense.

@Catija One can also be upset by a SO question; but it seems that telling the asker they are "completely fucking clueless" would be frowned upon? Looks like "my cause is so noble that civility norms doesn't apply" kind thing.

@JourneymanGeek Ah, but taking apart the post has disproportionally negative effect on minorities, and makes them feel unwelcome, and .... and... [insert heart-wrenching tales of woe here]
user202362
I am thinking of writing a novel, it starts like this:
user202362
An once beautiful land is shrouded by darkness, seven enchanters/enchantresses who possess magic power set to defeat the dark overlord. Those seven, each has a different power. One can control minds of the mass, one can create magic objects, one is able instantly heal an injured person (rumoured to be able to bring the dead to life).
user202362
There are also others with less magic abilities: one can summon food and create a feast, one is able to duplicate any physical structure. Be able to transport everyone from one point to another is the ability of another. The last possess all the knowledge in the world.
user202362
So the seven set off on a journey to seek 8 magic objects that enable them to find a map in which the weapon to defeat darkness can be found (because old prophecy said so).
Mean while, the dark overlord called trump continue to expand his rein and ruining of this land.
user202362

the seven enchanters/enchantresses represents 7 industries
"Once" takes "a"... not "an"... it starts with a consonant sound (w).

BTW, I have solved the problem about the azure VM pricing. They told me that the free 150$/130€ monthly credit that is given out as a free benefit with MSDN subscription programs has also one more -somehow hidden- benefit
You pay the "Linux" vm cost (that is, the cost that does not include the OS cost) for every machine you create
Basically, even if you create a SharePoint machine (that should include the OS and the SharePoint license additional costs)... you only pay the cost of a Linux machine of the same size.
.... Microsoft is weird. I don't know why they don't give this clause more visibility. In most situations, this means you get a 50% discount on top of the free credit. That should be advertised more.
@Derpy It will be automatically deleted by the Roomba in 10 days. Why waste time/effort on it to delete it now?
Because is acceptable here?
@Makyen feng-shui
@Derpy So my theory about the hidden discount was correct
@HTTPS Just because it's acceptable, doesn't mean there's any reason to do it. It's at score < -3, so it doesn't appear on the front page, so people won't see it (much). It's closed, so nobody can answer it. Just ignore it. It's not worth additional time or effort.
@Derpy was one delvote away. Done
@Makyen Well, just saying that it's not that rare even for 20k+ asking for delvote on off-topic MSE post.
Well, never mind, I don't feel like this needs a further discussion...
If it was just a standard off-topic programming question, autodeletion would suffice. But personally, I'm not very found of leaving what appears like a troll/fake post there for a week.

@Magisch has two (bad) questions from 2013. Comes back to the site 5 years late, only to post programming question on meta.
12:22
Earlier this week I came across the parable of the Purple Beggar (thecodelesscode.com/case/170) and I thought "maybe this is worth discussing on meta", more specifically as whether the "be nice" related rules could still permit a certain amount of frustration to be displayed in question titles while still keeping them relevant
the frustration would mildly encourage more people to read it and maybe post their input
especially from the HNQ part
Apparently SO had opened a machine learning competition 5 years ago to predict if the question will be closed or not. Is it used internally?
@HTTPS I mean, isn't that close to what smoke detector is?
12:39
@Nzall yeah, I believe there are some chatbots for monitoring post quality on SObotics too.
My idea is more to: a new user directly goes to "Ask Question" without reading anything. Before they post their first (bad) questions, the system will predict if it'll be closed or not. If it has lower probability to be closed, then the system directly allow it. If it's not sure, the system will show a pop-up to give a notice/warning that the question might be closed, but give a confirmation checkbox to post it. If it's 100% off-topic, prevent it being posted and show related help center/tour
@Nzall This is pure gold. Know, my good sir, that thanks to you another little empty hole has just been filled on the wall at my office.
@Derpy And what's your opinion on the entire discussion topic of small amounts of frustration in titles?
I'm not talking about titles that viciously attack someone or something. not something as intense as in the topic
12:56
@Nzall but if there's a question there we can edit it.
and I think questions should be as factual as possible
@JourneymanGeek You can be factual, on-topic and complete in a question while still showing a small amount of frustration in things like google not giving any response and the documentation being useless
"the documentation is useless" vs "I checked through the docmentation at "site" but was unable to find the specific thing I was looking for"
heh
apparently I didn't even complain when that happened to me
@JourneymanGeek "The documentation does not explain this topic at all"
just forged on with the question.
ah
I don't see too much wrong with that
however the ^^%&^%%^&^% documentation dosen't ^^*%#^&%#&%. A pox upon the dev and his family....
that would be out of line
If others check the documentation and can confirm it, then yeah, I don't see anything wrong.
13:00
The idea is to stay factual while hoping that someone who did find a solution is pushed to correct you
but but
27
A: upstart scripts: run a task after networking goes up

Journeyman GeekApparently respawn console none start on (local-filesystems and net-device-up IFACE!=lo) stop on [!12345] script chdir /usr/local/gw6c/bin/ exec /usr/local/gw6c/bin/gw6c end script seems to work

lulzily
This was exactly what I was looking for. It's still not in the upstart documentation anywhere that I could find. — Nathan Aug 14 '12 at 20:45
every. single. part. of.that.post. is obsolete.
gogo6 closed, upstart got killed off for systemd....
@Nzall My opinion? That we are far too eager in moderating "noise" like frustration in titles, signatures or "thank you" at the end of a question... but we let other more abusive behavior like snarky comments or "I am better than you" post live.
That said, I am not sure that, given our community, "the frustration would mildly encourage more people to read it and maybe post their input".
On the opposite.
It would only give one more excuse to bash the user with passive-aggressive remarks.
@Derpy As i clarified, I think it would be less "express frustration" and more "post mild hyperbole about things you're not certain about to encourage people who know better to correct you"
Weaponize the feeling of satisfaction people get when they can prove someone else wrong
@Nzall somehow relevant:
Your question is composed by two parts: one is a rant about downvotes, and the second one is a real issue. If you remove the rant (remember: have a tear of rant in a post, and all others will comment on is the rant) then you may get a good question. But then I fear that you may have still a problem: either you are aiming at resolving what seem an impossible problem by asking for a feature that can't be done (how you would recognize a vote as "revenge vote"?) or you will ask for a feature where people would need to "justify their downvotes, probably with an anonymous comment... — SPArchaeologist Oct 18 '16 at 18:21
basically, if one tried what is suggested in that short story on stack, I would expect:
- multiple downvotes, some from people that know the answer, most from people that jumped on the bandwagon.
- snarky comments like "sorry to burst your dream, that simply isn't true. Do research a little more before posting false info"
- no actual answer posted
@Nzall To my experience, people who behave that way often do not think they have to prove anything. Knowing (or thinking to know) that something is wrong is enough. They will point out that the claim is wrong, but more often than not they will avoid posting the actual solution
13:20
I mean, the snarky comment would be equally inappropriate

More seriously, I have enough rep and experience on the network that I'm slightly unlikely to ask a question people would take terribly
should that surprise anyone? If you candidate to become a mod, then you are doing extra work. At that point, there are only two options:
a) you are actually willing to work to serve the site - this *usually* mean you will try to be nice
b) you are Luxus Dreyar and you think that the site is growing weak, filled with users that do not deserve to be here. You want to purge them, take the guild from the staff and become the new ruler.

@rene Would you mind to add me as a privileged user for Smokey please?
One quite annoying thing with my suspension from SO is that I can't chat at any other sites which aren't derived from Meta SE, but these are all using Stack Overflow as their parent site. I'm considering to ask for a FR to change that, since w.o. chat it's hard to improve your actions at particular SE sites. What do you think? Is there a dupe FR already?

@HTTPS I probably bothered you too much about that unsecure protocol joke, sorry please! I think I even owe you a 3rd beer ;-)
nah.. no need to be sorry, I know it's just a joke ;p I'm already used to some people pestering me, and I'm okay with it as long as it's not a personal attack.
