Q: android OCR?

user121196I'm looking for a Java OCR that runs on Android, however Asprise doesn't seem to be a platform independent OCR. is there any opensource/free Java OCR I can use for android application development?

Q: Websockets are borked on the realtime question page

UndoWhen I load the realtime question page, this happens in my console: And the list doesn't update in real time. This makes me sad. Please fix it.

01:30
@Undo This makes me a sad panda doorknob.
01:58
Poor @Doorknob
I should make an account named @Doorhandle just to mess with you
@Undo Ha, @TheWobbuffet used to be called that
I thought someone had done that in the past.
couldn't remember who
Hey, could I get you and other Taverners to quickly review my new homepage design? :P
sure
linky?
hang on, uploading stuff
the images aren't showing yet :P
ok done
02:02
@Doorknob mm... that reference to the sad panda... kind of kinky
likey, @Doorknob
might want to tone down the drop shadows
@Braiam heh ;)
@Undo Yeah, I was thinking of that
and there's a bug in that table
alright, updated
there is?
I'll leave it to you to figure that one out
02:04

and those blocks at the bottom, it wouldn't hurt to make them all the same height.
dang it, forgot to close a tr :P
Yeah, fixed height for that would be fancy, but I'm not sure exactly how I'd do that without hardcoding a pixel value. :/
just hardcode a pixel value then :P
But... meh! :P How would I get that value?
wow! @Doorknob passed the html validator
02:06
@Doorknob guess
I could possibly use JS, and just leave it like that for people without it
Just throw one in. Call it 200 px and change it from there.
@Braiam Hrm, good habits? ;) I didn't check there beforehand

@Doorknob LIAR!
02:07
What should I do about answers which are just "possible duplicate of [link]" with a copy of the answer?
@Braiam Heh, how do you know? :P If I did, I would have noticed the missing tr
@Braiam I know, had to use * hack for IE <=7
Blaze doesn't pass the html validator :P
I could use a conditional comment but meh too lazy :D

Ahahahaha
02:08
Heh
hides in shame
Ummm, is this supposed to happen?
uh no
Nvm, fixed with vertical-align: bottom;
@Doorknob Still looks odd to me
02:12
@Qantas94Heavy I know, was testing locally. Updated now (shift+f5)
It also looks nicer on small width screens now.
:)
Now WHY is meta an anagram of meat?
I have typed meat SO many times accidentally! "meat name" Argh "meat stack overflow" Argh!

@Undo Heh, why in the world would it be doing that?

I have no idea

what to do with revealed interview questions on Stack Overflow? It should not have been disclosed in the first place in certain cases that I am aware of because I got into the same situation, and I can say this for sure.
I am leaning towards reporting it.
Mat
Mat
07:56
The fact that a question comes from an interview is irrelevant. If it's a good question, it's a good question.
(And most on SO are bad, zero-effort questions.)
unless the interview is still running, in which case you should defer answering it
well, there are very specific questions for which the chance is close to zero percent to come from elsewhere.
I am not sure Stack Overflow wants to get into trouble due to those.
@LaszloPapp the world is big, how can you be so sure?
@LaszloPapp it won't
@HamZa: read again, I said close to zero, not zero.
07:59
the poster might, but that's none of our business
there is 1:100000000 change to have the same question elsewhere sometimes, but it is very low.
@JanDvorak: no, what I mean is the communication overhead, not law trouble. That is not the only one.
and possibly bad reputation for not acting when it is reported.
Yeah, I'm talking about the fact that you're suggesting that the chance is so small
But I think you would know better...
Mat
Mat
@LaszloPapp: why would SO get in trouble? What "communication overhead"?
@HamZa: it is not a question about what a constructor is. It is about solving a very specific academic problem.
how does it pose any trouble for us? Well we won't delete it on demand, but they run that risk everywhere.
@LaszloPapp quote?
08:01
quote what?
well, this is already a communication overhead here.
plus, it is possible the company doing the interviews would contact Stack Overflow, etc.
quote an example, please
sorry, what do you mean?
@LaszloPapp we hold no liability
@LaszloPapp I mean, what specific question are you talking about?
do you really think I would reveal it to users when I am constrained by NDA? :)
possible answer spam, maybe already deleted: math.stackexchange.com/questions/260336/…
08:03
apparently, it is just me taking this seriously.
@JanDvorak yep, of course.
one possible outcome is also that the company does not come to the career site on SE to advertise job, and that is a loss.
@ShadowWizard thanks; I wasn't sure I remembered the body correctly
but it could end up with other kind of bad reputation when such an incident is reported and SE does not do anything about it.
08:05
@LaszloPapp doubtful
I do not think so. It would be bad reputation in front of my eyes, for instance, and I am likely not alone with that.
oookay. SO is up and running for me now.
you can close stuff now :)
the tricky part is reporting an accident like that however... you cannot reveal the question, but on the other hand you would - at least partially - confirm to the SE team, it is, even if you do not mention the client.
that kind of enforces me not to even report it, and leave the responsibility with the author.

perhaps it could be migrated to productivity.stackexchange.com?
so the best way to handle migration after the closure is a custom moderator attention flag requesting it?
08:17
@LaszloPapp only if the question is obviously worth migrating
most likely it isn't
Why? productivity is about such questions.
the only problem I see is that he has more than one question for one question, but that could be fixed easily.
@LaszloPapp or used as an excuse for closure
Mat
Mat
Rule of thumb: if you're not active in the target site, don't suggest migration there.
I wrote to him to modify his question into one on-topic question, and then it could be a good question on productivity.

Yeah, luckily you were.
@JanDvorak has been busted :(
@JanDvorak let me step back, why is your user script trying to access websockets in the first place? They have a very specific purpose which is already in those pages — Nick Craver ♦ 5 mins ago

Yeah
@TGMCians it's not his own reason, I guess he did not agree with the decision to remove that reason so he keeps using it on his own. Legal, but smelly. I say let him, if that's what makes him feel good and keep closing what needs to be closed.
11:14
Problem is that if that becomes the majority choice (afaik) the close reason becomes a generic one without clear and specific information.
@Bart true, and then we should ask the team for help e.g. black listing such comments same way "What have you tried" is banned.
But as long it's only few, the impact isn't big enough to make a change
Here is said userscript: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/193646. I chose websockets over scraping the page for variety of reasons. One is that I thought it would hold more information than the page (say, a longer snippet). The other was of performance: MutationObservers were not well supported in web browsers back then, nor were mutation events (they also killed performance. the the MO support is better now, but I don't want to rewrite this part just because I can), and polling the page for changes felt conceptuallly wrong. Also related: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/218343Jan Dvorak 11 secs ago
feedback?
@JanDvorak well said, I hope you didn't open a Pandora box :)
Meh, I think Nick's comment is more out of curiosity rather than to indicate any problem.
if he dismantles the dam I've built over the village he has helped build, well, let the flood come.
@Bart I certainly hope so
11:19
It's obvious to us now that there is some spam fighting going on by the community. But if you just implemented the site, you might not have thought of that application.
@JanDvorak I drowned in the depths of this... you mean if he'll ask us not to use the websockets to detect spam, let the spam remain unreported? :)
@ShadowWizard yep. If I can't, I won't.
He'll join Baba then @ShadowWizard.
@JanDvorak fair enough, and poor Smoke Detector will also go down I guess
@JanDvorak we have greatly improved the spam blocking since then, and are about to do another round of improvements, is this an issue anymore? Obviously from my side you can see the concern: I want to fix spam appearing for all users rather than fix a script made to hide it for a few. — Nick Craver ♦ 43 secs ago

@Doorknob, I know exactly what "help" means in this cummunity. "just trying to help", gee. Just trying to mob and act stupid. — davidkonrad 4 mins ago
Well, that escalated quickly.
@davidkonrad You realize that insulting the people who are volunteering their time to try to help you understand isn't the best strategy for getting an answer? Show me one specific comment that you think is "mobbing" or "stupid." — Doorknob 1 min ago
@davidkonrad I've added my downvote just for your attitude in the comments (on the answer below). Others may have downvoted because they disagree with your statement - that's how votes on meta work. — Doorknob 48 secs ago
13:37
@Doorknob I don't agree with all the comments left by David but voting as a kind of punishment? You don't need that.
3
@rene Really, you wouldn't downvote a rant or a post full of insults?
I would downvote based on the post, not on the behaviour of the OP, that is all.
The comments are kind of part of the post, I guess, but meh
@rene Sometimes behavior indicates the way in which the original post was meant. I mean if someone comes to meta and makes a post which is all "why did this happen?" and then all the comments are "It SHOULD not have HAPPENED. You're morons!" then it reveals what the original post actually meant to state. I'm not going to edit the post to make it reflect that the OP actually meant but I'm going to read it in that light and vote accordingly.
As I see it, it is not "punishment". I'm just voting in the same way as if the OP had put their entire thought in their post in the first place.
13:53
I agree with that. Leaving comment though that addresses the behaviour of the OP as a reason for a downvote feels wrong for me. Leaving a comment like 'reading the post and all your comments justifies a downvote' or something like that....
@rene: Santa is far, maybe the easter bunny ? :)
@Louis Maybe the language barrier is a problem here for me....
@rene In what way is the language barrier a problem? (I'm confused.)
for me it maybe is?
I see. It's too bad I don't speak Dutch. :)
13:58
Dijkstra was also Dutch, right?
Yep
@Doorknob I agree with @rene on this one, we should not downvote a question just because the OP insulted us in comments. That's NOT the purpose of downvotes. If the insults are in the question/answer itself then we should edit them out. In comments, flag and move on.
5
icecream?
There is a saying too "smart person won't get himself into a trouble that intelligent person can solve" so sometimes better be smart and not be lured into a fight. :)
@rene think we need a beer (or coffee!) when we agree, icecream is reserved when we disagree :D
I am getting downvoted because I constantly "insult" others with technical feedback and downvotes. Only a very few keep improving their posts, and get +1 from me after that. It is mostly up to them. Anyway, this is implicitly encouraged by the Stack Overflow policies.
14:03
@ShadowWizard I settle for a coffee, although it is great weather here for a beer....
@rene instant coffee, with milk, two sugar then. Cheers!
