@ThiefMaster can you unfreez this room pls chat.stackoverflow.com/rooms/30213/ajax
15:45
There should be a badge-giver badge, awarded for doing some action that made someone else get a badge. E.g. gave an accepted answer its 40th upvote, gave a question its 2500th view, approved a user's 50th tag wiki edit.
@RyanCarlson You realize how ridiculously easy that would be to abuse?
Leaving a comment to a question together with Jon Skeet and Eric Lippert is what causes the most anxiety I have here on SO.
@DoorknobofSnow I was joking
@Alez: still need it? or why did you delete the message pointing to the room?

@DoorknobofSnow thanks.. but why not ?
@Undo It's been that way since a while ago
FML facepalm
@RyanCarlson Me just woke up.

I'm up to 500 today. (:
9 hours ago, by animuson
I'm going to bed. I'll work up to 1,000 tomorrow.
Yay!
@animuson Good start. We'll gradually work up to 5k/day.
gotta love round numbers :P
Is... there someone odd about the 3's and the 8's in that screenshot?
should be 32
80 is ok-ish
@Undo ?
@JanDvorak fine, base 10 round numbers. :P
15:56
@DoorknobofSnow They look italicized.
why base-10?
@Undo not to me... I guess you're used to a different font :P
feature-request: run the rep system in base-9.
@Undo no, base-15, just to confuse programmers who think it's hex.
heh
15:57
@Undo yep, your font is different than mine
base36
@DoorknobofSnow Ah, ok.
I am using sublime tex editor and want to modify a theme. I use pytohn btw
is it okay to ask on SO how to change the color of the doc string without changing the color of the comment?
or should I ask on the ST forums?
@Vader try SO - it's a question about a programming tool...
@Vader programming tool usage is fine, but check for duplicates first

Q: Sublime Text 2: How do I change the color that the row number is highlighted?

phirschybarAs the subject says, I want to change to something other than the very light grey. shown here: http://sandbox.thecanarycollective.com/whiteboard/2012-03-21_110512.png I have a hard time seeing that, especially when doing a 'find in files' command.

nice round numbers on all of my bronze badges actually :D
yay!
Huh, never knew @DoorknobofSnow was 20k on SO
Any SE Team around?

I see Shog asleepin’.
16:00
@hichris123 Hey there!
@tchrist Tim Post might be awake.
@hi chris!
@TimPost You awakey?
@Undo thats not what I am asking, I couldn't find anythign on it on SO or the forums
16:01
does that work? :P no, it has to be 3 letters to ping I guess
Not enough letters to pingy @Doorknob.
@Vader Ask a new question then. Just make it clear.
I'm still impressed with SR's activity.
@Undo me too, especially how fast it got to private beta
Three days into private beta and we have more questions than Ebooks.
I still can't believe that they managed to suck me into it.
It's a policy nightmare.
Heh. I have AI to worry about. :P
One user already wants to expand to hardware.
I just want codegolf to get out of beta. :D
@TimPost @Shog9 I just left about a dozen flags across the network, including on MSO, SO, SU, Programmers, ELU, Linguistics, F&FS, and I dunno where, about one particular network-wide issue that might be better addressed by the SE team than by each site’s mod team working in isolation. Thanks.
16:04
@tchrist would sending an email via the contact form make sense?
I'd say so...
ya, you should probably do that
oh, btw, keyboardfire.com :D
Yeah, probably.
would like light theme better if the flames were less transparent
I see animuson isn't quite to his cookie goal...
16:06
Meanwhile, site-specific mods in here should be aware that this user has done the same bounty-trick all across the network.
@hichris123 Yes, he still has nine hours.
> This account is temporarily suspended network-wide. The suspension period ends on Mar 10 at 14:23
Hah, I was trying to figure out how that related to my message :P
I know.
@Undo No, I wasn't saying animuson has been suspended. :P
16:07
:D
He went around to every site he could, made as many bounties as he could, and then marked his account for deletion, all within the same hour (insofar as I could discern).
Why?
3 each on Math & Physics, 1 on most of the other sites.
I have no idea.
I really do want that CM @@ ping...
Smells gamey.
Like he’s trying to break something.
16:09
Or... (speculation) serial-bountying?
Can you place a bounty while suspended?
That would be odd.
no
Ahah!
you have no rep while suspended.
^ that. And can't answer/ask questions.
16:09
Well, kinda.
If he placed the bounty before the suspension, perhaps that was its cause.
Although I cannot think why.
If he placed the bounty after suspension, then that seems a bug.
But the combo of DELETE-ME and mega-meta-bounties smells decidedly macabre.
How the heck did this work? serverfault.com/revisions/573405/2
@tchrist This is strange, one moment
It's just spaces in the body & nothing in the title that I can see.
@TimPost Thanks, Tim. I’ll abort the contact form now that you’ve noticed.
@hichris123 Also a space in the title.
16:13
You're right.
Let me see if I can find anything from them
@Undo I just do not want to get downvoted because its too off-topic
@Vader It's not off-topic, methinks.
Although you never know with the SO crowd.
@hichris123 Looks like a complete deletion of the body.
@tchrist Yeah, if you look though they just used spaces. So really there was nothing in there.
16:20
@hichris123 Not very Unicode savvy then. :)
@tchrist I reached out to him via email to make sure he's okay, and just interested in leaving. GOOD CATCH, by the way. Good job.
@TimPost Thanks. The combo of all the bounties and then the apparent rage-quit seemed odd.
@tchrist A desire to 'give all your stuff away' out of the blue is a warning sign that should be taken seriously, even if it's just unicorn points and probably nothing.
@TimPost There are a lot of kinds of seriality that are not auto-detected, especially when cross-site.
Indeed. Well, it's detected, but the detectors are made out of meat.

16:26
@TimPost Is [software-development] a meta tag on SR?
@TimPost Heh. :)
Am I the only person to find it weird that meta.stackoverflow.com/users/-1 and meta.stackoverflow.com/users/1 exist, but meta.stackoverflow.com/users/0 is just a bunch of waffles?
@RyanCarlson Community is special.
it gets a negative number.
@Undo 0 is more special than -1.
In my opinion
but... negative numbers!
(and mmmmmmm waffles)
16:39
If only Unicode had a superscript/modifier-letter for pi, we could in chat write that 𝑒**𝜋𝒾 − 1 = 0.
Being those the Fab-5 Nice Numbers of Mathematics — which are of course distinct from the Holy Trinity of Nice Numbers of Computer Science.

A: Is [software-development] a meta-tag?

UndoI'm of the opinion that it's a perfectly good tag and should be kept. Here's why: In the question What is a meta tag?, Both Robert and Gilles set forth some criteria. Here's Robert Cartaino's: Proper tags describe what the question is about. "Meta tags" are things users add to describe other...

^ Is my reasoning decent?
@Undo It's more of segregation than taxonomy I think, trying to keep development questions scoped apart from software recommendation questions. I tend to think that's not a good idea.
@TimPost So it's not exactly a meta tag per se?
But it's still not a great tag?
It's just weird. On AVP (which we just split), you had 'audio' and 'video' as tags denoting which was what, and that was a strong symptom that we shouldn't have made those two communities exist on one site.
16:53
So maybe software development tools needs to be split off? Not seeing it.
I don't see a good reason to only see library recs, but I do see some utility in only searching them.
yes, I see the same thing.
And it's not symptomatic of a disjointed community
good
I'd like to see a few more folks answer.
16:55
Ok
Presumably, we will have language tags on the site, so ... the general 'software development' tag isn't needed, just search by language(s)
(kind of thinking out loud here)
Yes, I agree with that. I'm not looking forward to having to do [c#] OR [c] OR [php] OR [java] OR ... to search for that one tool I heard about in that one answer but can't remember the name of, though.
0
A: Should the [software-development] tag be removed?

Tim PostI think the only utility in having it is to be able to scope only library / framework recommendations while searching, or hone one's favorite tags. However, presumably, as time goes on, we'll have tags for whatever languages and frameworks we've talked about, and non-specific noun tags like xml-...

@TimPost Saw, makes sense.
[c]+[xml-parser] is going to turn up any XML handling libraries written in C that we know about.
Or bobince's user profile

Still not seeing it.

Q: Was HAL correct that his continued operation was more important to the mission than the lives of the crew?

raxacoricofallapatoriusIn an exchange between astronaut Dave Bowman and the HAL 9000 computer aboard the Discovery in 2001: A Space Odyssey, HAL asserts that he cannot allow Dave Bowman to deactivate him because doing so would jeopardize their mission: Dave Bowman: Open the pod bay doors, HAL. HAL: I'm sorry, ...

Heh.
Yeah, I don't really know what hole SciFi fills :P
I want to chat with a specific user who answered my question. how can I let him know?
17:25
@Vader Create a chatroom and post a link to it in the comments.
okay thanks
I finished my responsive design! :D
(resize your browser window to see it repond)
next step is to add color :P but now I'm going to take a break
@DoorknobofSnow Me likey.
@Doorknob You should use Bootstrap. :P
Yes. Bootstrap. Plz?
Less work. More fun.
17:31
Exactly.
animuson♦ 516
@hichris123 @Undo But I'm clueless about bootstrap :P I thought it was for fixed-width designs?
@DoorknobofSnow No, it's fully responsive.
Well he woke up. :P

huh...

@DoorknobofSnow hichris123.erwaysoftware.com is Bootstrap-ly.
I woke up a couple hours ago, actually.
@Undo ok, well, I've never used it before and it was pretty easy to write mine with plain CSS anyway :P
But I had a bad dream and spent most of the morning crying in bed.
;(
17:35
Probably about the flag queue getting out of hand while he was controling taming the CV queue.
ok, I'm going to make my wobsite moar colorful later :P
rewriteengine now redirects keyboardfire.com to www.keyboardfire.com
Ewwww www prefixes.
@animuson why not? should I make www.* redirect to * instead?
@animuson ok, now it redirects the other way :P
17:51
Lol it depends on your setup, really. I prefer not using it; I think it looks stupid. So I designed my system in a way that wouldn't require it.

Q: Should I include "www" in my canonical URLs? What are the pros and cons?

Andreas BoniniWhat are the pros and cons of having http://www.example.com/ vs http://example.com/? For example a problem I'm aware of is that if I use a domain without www I can't set a cookie for the current subdomain only (since there is no subdomain), and the cookies I set will be sent to all subdomains.

@animuson You know what, I actually think it looks cleaner this way :D I'll leave it like this
I use animuson.info as my CDN, so I don't have to worry about cookies and such.
Why does this get bumped ^^^^^?
Community♦ bump
Ah, it is poking old questions

@Doorknob Where are you hosting your MySQL database?
@hichris123 what do you mean?

@DoorknobofSnow So... Apache + MySQL?
18:59
@hichris123 not Apache... or at least I don't think so
I'm so used to my AWS with EC2 and RDS setup. :P

@Undo I love Sublime so much. Thank you!!!!!
@hichris123 Hehe, you're welcome.

uses phpMyAdmin
@animuson looks for a hole in the server-side validation that gives him unlimited unratelimited flags
@Undo Tell me if you find it.
@hichris123 Heh, only after I know I'm not getting an SR diamond :P
So... I've lowered my bounty requirements... 370 anyone? :P
@Undo Don't worry... I wouldn't ever flag that many. It's too annoying. :P

[feature-request]: change the downvote help text:
@animuson That’s actually a code-smell.
No wonder you hate it.
Cyclomatic complexity (or conditional complexity) is a software metric (measurement). It was developed by Thomas J. McCabe, Sr. in 1976 and is used to indicate the complexity of a program. It is a quantitative measure of logical strength of the program. It directly measures the number of linearly independent paths through a program's source code. The concept, although not the method, is somewhat similar to that of general text complexity measured by the Flesch-Kincaid Readability Test. Cyclomatic complexity is computed using the control flow graph of the program: the nodes of the graph cor...
Not having curlies doesn’t spare you from the problem of code that is overly branching, overly indented, insufficiently abstracted, or some combination of the above.

@DoorknobofSnow Uhm... Y U NO USE PDO??!!??
@Undo What's the difference?
19:47
@DoorknobofSnow PDO iz better. Makez it harder for me to inject evil things into your site.
Why is PDO better?
@Undo in what way?
die PDO
@DoorknobofSnow PDO sends the parameters separate from the request, so injections are pretty much impossible.
MySQLi can do that too
19:48
@Undo Doesn't mysqli do that as well?
I don't think so.
Maybe.
PDO sounds cooler.
it sends the parameters by USPS
well, I'm using mysqli :P
I use prepared statements with mysqli
Nuh uh, MySQLi is way cooler. If you flip it to iLQSym, it sounds like "I licks him"

I can't vote to undelete a question because some of the people who voted to delete it later became moderators ._.

@animuson Woah. :O
that basically killed 3 days' worth of CV queue items
A whole lot of old, abandoned questions got deleted this week. :P
20:05
if I ping someone who is not in the room will they get notified?
...I just got "A generic error occurred" and now I'm mad at myself for being so unspecific :P
@Vader Think I heard it was something like, as long as the user has been in the room in the past 2ish weeks. That could be bullshit though..
ohk thanks
20:21
@animuson: wow, 791 close vote review today....
Fuck me. I've put an infinite loop around my socket receiving callback function. It entirely clogged up my computer, not even a hard reset could reach its destination. It only worked after I pulled out the network cable

how do mods contact people that need to be contacted? via email?

maybe I got that by mis-tagged questions?
> Undo is a command in many computer programs. It erases the last change done to the document reverting it to an older state. In some more advanced programs such as graphic processing, undo will negate the last command done to the file being edited.
@Undo ^
I have 2 hours to do another 100 reviews. :P
21:52
@animuson How do you want that cookie?
Are you capped at 1000?
18 hours ago, by hichris123
@animuson If you do 1000 close reviews today (UTC time)... I'll give you a cookie.
So we have to buy cookies for all mods to do some close vote queue handling?
I came up yesterday with the idea to send out beer to all participants in the SO Close vote review meetup
Turns out that sending alcohol across states might be illegal...
I'd rather have swag.
21:58
I didn't check across countries
You'd also have to collect identification from all users to verify their age.
