@waffles The tool itself is written entirely in JavaScript, using the Prototype and Flotr libraries.
@RebeccaChernoff I think that's overkill myself

@RebeccaChernoff Help or hurt in terms of finding dead posts? Or in terms of DB server performance?

Also, you can hack on data.se without need for visual studio ... I think there is an html page that you can play with, if your changes are only js

@RebeccaChernoff altho now that you say that maybe low rep would be beneficial :\

@RebeccaChernoff our conclusion was that nothing can help those questions in that query, except being re-asked better.. feel free to mess with it

@RebeccaChernoff In the latter case, hasn't the server been upgraded, and therefore mightier than Cthulhu?

Q: A Strange Error (COBOL)

Kimmy1235Hey all, got one mountain of a problem here. I have completed a program I had to do for collage homework, but when I run it the output shows almost nothing it is suppose to. This only happens when I RUN it though. If I hold F11 to STEP through the whole thing it shows the results as it is suppose...

A homework problem, in COBOL! A rare sight.

holy @lerts (:

@RebeccaChernoff why are you not logged in :)

I dunno. All I did is click on Jeff's query link in the meta post!

@waffles Why are you snooping on @RebeccaChernoff? :-P

5:03 AM
@RebeccaChernoff yeah there is a fair bit of js that needs to load prior to stuff working, we should clean up the way this happens

Black magic. shakes head

Is there some indication that I missed that it was running my query when I loaded the direct link?

So ... resumes. @Moshe wanna see what my last one looked like (actually this might be an older one, I'm looking at PDFs that were in an email between me and a friend)

@RebeccaChernoff when you click on a query that already was executed, it should simply load the results .... If you click on one that has not executed yet, it will not run it, however if you are really fast and click run before all the js loads, you will get an annoying js issue

It was loading the results, it was just taking its time. Status bar says waiting for sstatic, but that run query button was calling to me. (;

5:08 AM
@RebeccaChernoff yeah ... we should probably render with that button disabled and only enable it after all the js in the page loaded

Apparently the button needs to hide for certain coughs impatient people.

I read on a guys blog that he was able to do 1 to 2 jobs a year and be set on that. I want those types of jobs, and I want to hire people to take on t...

5:09 AM
@ChrisJesterYoung Hahahah

^ Final vote to do something with it?

I know she's not talking to me cos I got it right :p
@Moshe did you leave?

@RebeccaChernoff Deion Sanders! He should have tossed it better. :(

I'm not interested in your excuses!

Hmm.
I can't suggest an edit on that question anymore, because it contains tags that don't exist on programmers, and I'm not allowed to submit a question with new tags with low rep. Even though I am not the one that tagged the question. Also because my edit is just two characters, and correcting spelling/typos isn't allowed.

5:12 AM
@DanGrossman unfortunatley that sounds appropriate

I'm having no trouble at all imagining @RebeccaChernoff choking subordinates with her mind powers

If only there were someone here that could listen to those sorts of problems and issue an edict as to the usefulness of such a situation :p

@RebeccaChernoff That's OK, you should be more interested in figuring out how to come up with a test case ;)

@drachenstern I did leave for a moment. What was that?

5:13 AM
Although my Plan B is to force Chrome developers to sign up for Stack Overflow and then use our userscript.

@TimStone function passMeDown(value){ if (value) { passMeDown(value - 1); return;} else {Function.apply();}} wouldn't work?

It only does this sometimes, heh.

@drachenstern HP, nice!

@TimStone then I would say ... hmmmm
@Moshe slow down, it was manufacturing

I suppose I could scour V8's source code some more, but I had other things I wanted to do instead of reading C++, heh.

5:15 AM
basically a screwdriver monkey

Eh. It was something.

@Moshe yeah, but notice I didn't put my past 16+ years of work history on there
Only a few high points
that's what I don't get about resume's

Ya, go write that on a resume. I dare you.
:P

So...does anyone besides me find the suggested edits review of tag wiki edits confusing?

@Moshe go write what?

5:16 AM
Resumes, pssh. ;)

Why, did I?

that's the resume I used to get my current job
@Moshe no
@RebeccaChernoff yes and no

Write "screwdriver monkey".

@RebeccaChernoff Haven't seen one yet.

@Moshe oh, if it was for another screwdriver monkey position I would

5:17 AM
@drachenstern did you see mine?

@TimStone Go to /review/suggested-edits. You'll see some in no time.

but I won't ever work for that low again unless I absolutely must (like $12/hr)
@Moshe no

Ouch. 12/hr.

@ChrisJesterYoung I think the path is still only accessible to 10K+ isn't it?
Aye, seems to be.

@Moshe I was just starting my 4year degree

5:19 AM
Well my name is my website. Not much there.

Q: i want a secure blog system with the very basic functionality

Jayapal ChandranHi, I want a list of blog systems which are secure and simple. A very simple one is enough. Just creating new posts, categories, edit blogs with clean url. that is all we need but very secure. We do not want wordpress. They have too many features and they are hackable. Instead of spending time a...

@TimStone Oh, you're from the peanut gallery? Oh well. ;-)

Just add a .com
My resume is there. Hard to miss.

@ChrisJesterYoung Yeah, I need to get up the will to take care of my SO question backlog and work on 10K, heh.

The wiki and the excerpt are actually 2 different posts, so editing them generates 2 different suggested edits. But there's just a single edit comment that is put on both posts. So you could be looking at the excerpt suggested edit staring blankly, while the actual body proposed edit makes more sense with the edit comment.
Or at least, that's what it seems like to me.

5:20 AM
4 pages!!!
zomg, that's murder

@TimStone "Back in the day", posting code golf questions was the easiest way to get rep. Too bad, that window of opportunity has long passed. :-P

Well it hasn't been used for anything. Notice my education. I havent started anything serious.

@Moshe yeah I see that ... when you goto look for a job in the US full time lemme know

That Chrysler commercial won the "Brand Bowl" on Twitter. It was awesome.

@drach why?

5:22 AM
@ChrisJesterYoung even on codegolf.se!!!

@waffles Roughly how many hits does data.se get? The Google Charts API looks incredibly straightforward.

@Moshe cos I'm curious how many hits it gets

I plan on starting college this fall, Gd willing.

@drachenstern Yes, but posting golfing questions on CodeGolf.SE won't get you rep on SO. :-P

5:23 AM
@ChrisJesterYoung true, but it doesn't get a lot of rep there either

@drachenstern Yeah, I think people are more guarded about upvoting answers there. Especially if they don't understand the answer.

@Kragen not a massive amount, but would much prefer to render this stuff on our site and not send the data to an external service for render

@drachenstern That's partly why GolfScript answers haven't done so well, rep-wise.

I'm saving that

5:24 AM
@DanGrossman that was pretty funny huh?

@drach It's a PDF I should probably set up some sort of analytics on my site. Not much there now.

@Moshe true, do it later tho :p
ok people, I've gotta get up in like X hours and I really need like N hours of sleep, so ... I'm out. See most of you manana.

Why later?

Ok. Enjoy.

5:26 AM
hey @TimStone .... go get some sleep :p

@Moshe cos you have too many irons in the fire ;)

Never!

@RebeccaChernoff O_o

5:27 AM
Trying to decide if this is rare don't-care territory or something to raise.

Seems kind of confusing to me, but.

@Rebecca decide if what is rare?

this situation

and what situation are you referring to? The one in the middle east?

20 mins ago, by Dan Grossman
I can't suggest an edit on that question anymore, because it contains tags that don't exist on programmers, and I'm not allowed to submit a question with new tags with low rep. Even though I am not the one that tagged the question. Also because my edit is just two characters, and correcting spelling/typos isn't allowed.
6 mins ago, by Rebecca Chernoff
Tag Wiki suggested edit example: http://stackoverflow.com/edit-suggestions/2415 and http://stackoverflow.com/edit-suggestions/2414
The 'suggest edit has bad ux in some cases' situation?

5:33 AM
I can't even understand what you wrote
can you break it down for me like I'm four years old?
apparently I suck at reading
there's like 24 items in that paragraph.. which one of them is the problem?

...waits...

the minimum edit is 6 characters, and unless you come to my house and kill me, that will not change as long as I breathe air
the rest, I dunno
(for low-rep anon users anyways)

just a weird case, like @rchern's
if a question is moved between sites, it may contain tags that didn't exist on the destination site
that'll prevent suggesting edits, since it pretends you're adding those tags, and you need high rep to use new tags

ok, that I can understand

5:37 AM
I wanted to capitalize the question, add a comma before a "but", and fix a spelling error. Those 3 corrections weren't enough to meet the character limit :/

@DanG in other words, a migrated question with an attached edit suggestion which adds a nonexisting tag to the destination site, yes?

we could strip all tags from the questions that don't exist on the target site when migrating
I suspect you will get a lot of questions tagged [untagged] in that case though

@Moshe No, you can't suggest an edit from the new site after migration if the question was already tagged with a nonexistant tag. Unless you plan to remove those tags as your edit, I guess.

meaning, NONE of the tags existed on the target site
@dan couldn't you suggest an edit which removes those tags AND makes 6 chars of changes?

@Jeff, but that doesn't really help, as you said. Also sonetimes a new tag will be a relevant or useful one.

5:39 AM
@JeffAtwood I don't know, someone else made the edits for me already

I was getting a snack. Is my tag wiki scenario unclear?

the real question then is "what do we do with tags that don't exist on the target site when a question is migrated"
this has nothing to do with edits, really

Perhaps the tags should be up for review as well?

tags are up for review, as I mentioned above-- you can remove them in a suggested edit

Like customs In a country? "Inbound question, check its tags"?

5:40 AM
@RebeccaChernoff's thing was actually about edits then. When you edit a tag wiki, it creates two suggested edits, one of which may show no change but have an edit reason...

@RebeccaChernoff @waffles will have to look at that, I know nothing about it

Right but edits can be suggested by anyone. But there is no way to suggest tags, unless here is and I don't know about it.

Yeah, I'm a bit confused. I thought Dan was talking about something different.

@moshe only in one direction -- you can't suggest adding a tag that doesn't exist, but you can sure suggest removing one that doesn't.
(I think -- is that not what you were seeing @dan ? Anyway this is about migrations not editing IMO)
the root problem is that the tags don't exist which is a direct consequence of the migration.. so this is a migration issue

I only wanted to change the body of the question, but since it already had tags from before it was moved, I was prevented from submitting my edit. It told me I wasn't allowed to create new tags. I didn't add any tags. I didn't try removing them.

5:44 AM
@Jeff well here, it seems, lies the root of the problem. A user must have X rep to create a tag. Anyone can suggest an edit. In suggesting an edit, they can suggest a tag. However, because tags are not necessarily stable across sites, edits can create tags, essentially. So you have a workaround here for creating tags sans minimum rep.

@DanGrossman that's my point, I suspect it might work if you removed the tags that don't exist as part of your edit

:nod:

@Moshe right, that's why this is about migrations not editing

Please excuse my poor spelling, on the iPhone with a super-protective case which can impair typing.

How about just ignoring the restrictions on adding new tags if the tags haven't changed? (when editing questions)

5:45 AM
creating new tags on a mature site is almost always bad though
thus, I am inclined to just blow away any tags that don't exist in the migration

@Kragen How can you add a new tag if the tags haven't changed? |:

@Jeff why?

the only problem is, you CAN end up with a question tagged [untagged] this way

But surely just removing them is worse though? Then you have no idea what the tags were

If none of the tags exist on the destination site, should the question really be going there?

5:46 AM
seriously, go look at the Stack Overflow faq and see how much rep it takes to create a tag. Go ahead, I'll wait here.

@RebeccaChernoff Probably not, but we all know SO questions we don't like get dumped somewhere else to die :p

@Jeff so then try this: blow away tags and then put untagged questions in a queue for mods and high rep users to tag and approve.
@Rebecca perhaps, if a question was asked and needs that much editing, it may have been poorly tagged.

I'm asking independently of suggested edits. Just basic question migration.

Also, there's a difference between "mature" and "mature". Take Apple.SE versus SO. Both are "mature" as in "not in beta" but SO is obviously more mature.

@moshe that's a major feature request, I decline that for now

5:49 AM
@Moshe Just something that popped into mind from what Jeff said.

@moshe this is obvious; look at the /faq on each site and tell me what the tag creation rep levels are

Kill the tags and hope people do the right thing about retagging after they just took the time to move it, but that assumes they have rep on the destination site to do so...

@RebeccaChernoff we could say that if a question doesn't have at least one tag in common on the destination, the software will not move it

@Jeff np was just thinking aloud.
@Jeff going to check.

that would be a better short term solution
it would also tend to prevent wildly inappropriate migrations

5:51 AM
It could just 'close as off topic' without migrating?

@JeffAtwood Right, exactly what I was thinking. Seems like it would work in theory, wondering if it applies just as well in the practical world.

this question tagged [shoes] [socks] [shirt] .. yes, that belongs on pro webmasters!

> -- 2011-02-05 rep +365 = 8249 (after dropping 290 reputation from upvotes over cap)

@Jeff I looked up apple.SE and SO. Do you mind explaining yourself just a bit. I'm afraid I'm not getting it.

Do we have the data needed to write up a query that would look at how often this has come up on past migrations?

5:54 AM
Ah got it.
Okay, gnight folks. I have to get to sleep. Early day tomorrow. @Jeff, btw, still have any more stickers?

G'night @Moshe

It's way too late for me to still be awake :/

Q: How to discover memory usage of my application in Android

AndreaI would like to know how I can find the memory used on my Android application, programmatically. I hope there is a way to do it. Plus I would like to understand how to get the free memory of the phone too.

I wish diamond mods get the power to 'accept' answers like these :(

Is the comment you added really necessary?

Hmmm... getting a TI 84 graphics calculator for school this year

I have never seen one
only 83+/83+ silver/89

The TI-84 Plus is a graphing calculator made by Texas Instruments which was released in early 2004. There is no original TI-84, only the TI-84 Plus and TI-84 Plus Silver Edition models. It is an enhanced version of the TI-83 Plus. The key-by-key correspondence is relatively the same, but the 84 features some improved hardware. The memory is about 3 times as large, and CPU about 2.5 times as fast (over the TI-83 and TI-83 Plus). A USB port and built-in clock functionality were also added. It is merely a slightly enhanced version of the TI-83 Plus Silver Edition, as it retains many of th...

Q: Want to replace browser scroll bar with my own

hardik9045Hi, I have one problem in my home page design. Problem is that I don't want a scroll bar which is provided by the browser. I have created my own scroll bar so please give me hint how can do this thing? Can I use jQuery? Can I do this through HTML?

I learned to program with a TI-59
The TI-59 was an early programmable calculator, manufactured by Texas Instruments from 1977. It was the successor to the TI SR-52, quadrupling the number of "program steps" of storage, and adding "ROM Program Modules" (an insertable ROM chip, capable of holding 5000 program steps.) It was one of the first LED calculators with the capability and flexibility to take on many real-world calculation challenges, and quickly became popular with professionals in many fields. The calculator could be powered from an external adapter or from its internal NiCd rechargeable battery pack. Display ...

6:32 AM
I want to program with it, but man I'm spoilt by the syntax of erhm... modern languages

I had tons of games on my TI-89
The TI-89 and the TI-89 Titanium are graphing calculators developed by Texas Instruments. They are differentiated from most other TI graphing calculators by their computer algebra system, which allows symbolic manipulation of algebraic expressions. For example, equations can be solved in terms of variables; the TI-83/84 series can only give a numeric result. TI-89 The TI-89 is a graphing calculator developed by Texas Instruments (TI) in 1998. The unit features a 160×100 pixel resolution LCD screen and a large amount of flash memory, and includes TI's Advanced Mathematics Soft...
Doesn't that description just sound sexy? "Other" calculators only give numeric results. This one can solve variables, and has a "large" amount of memory (639kb)!

A: Disadvantages of quoting integers in a Mysql query?

Sachin ShanbhagAccording to me, I think there is no performance/size cost in the case you have mentioned. Even if there is, then it is very much negligible and wont affect your application as such.

Gotta love "According to me" authoritative answers!

Erh... huh?

Q: Does jQuery work pretty well on Mac?

EliHi All, Thanks for reading. I have a client that I am doing a very small project for. His company uses Max exclusively. I rarely use Mac, and don't have one for testing. If I use jQuery and test it with FireFox on windows, can I assume it will also work for FireFox for Mac? How about other ...

Wow, pluralizing Mac as Max!
I want to move that to webmasters, but I have no votes left, as usual.

@DanGrossman Why webmasters?

It boils down to "is it cross-platform to use JavaScript on my website", not a programming question

6:41 AM
@YiJiang Exactly what I was thinking.

> We really have to stop being scooped by rivals on news affecting our own company.

WIKIPEDIA: TI-84 Integrated programming languages
TI-BASIC and machine code. Assembly and C require a computer with a Z80 cross-compiler or an on-calc assembler.

I'm not sappy, but - every kid should have a dad like that.

I'd be a happier person if I didn't stay up and answer questions during India hours. Now I even have Indians from SO e-mailing me using my website contact form begging me to answer their SO questions...

oh :(

@DanGrossman That's... wow
Not too often I hope

> Referer 1: stackoverflow.com/users/280598/dan-grossman Hi, Dan please help me in SO question I will be thankful to u.

How about stalking them back, i do that a lot , even though its bad.

@DanGrossman Just tell them off, or ignore them

7:35 AM
I am surprised this was an actual question/answer stackoverflow.com/questions/4918719/…

Unless you're getting a flood of emails, ignoring the one user should be enough

It's more the general quality and attitude of questioners changes during India's waking hours and US's sleeping hours

totally , and its same at the workplace here

@DanGrossman Some of them express themselves so badly you'd excuse almost any 'bad attitude' as their inability to use English correctly

im in korea now , when i was in india nobody wants to get the work done themselves

7:37 AM
It's usually comments that get me: "Please give me the codes" "Here's a tutorial: [link]" "No please guide me step by step!"

i dont get the attitude , its really a shame to be part of such a country ... but to be fair the place that i come from has a european heritage, so when i went to other states in india it was quite a cultural shock

They are always taught very polite English in schools, but often use it to make demands for work

I reckon its because of the corruption inbred into the culture

Wow, the Chrome process for this tab almost brought down my computer again. I alt+f4'd and killed its process before it totally locked up, for a 4th time this week. Something weird going on with this version of Chrome.

@DanGrossman Up/Downgrade channels?

7:44 AM
I guess... this is supposed to be stable! I'll switch to beta, might help.
I'm at 499 answers and +259 rep today
I guess one more and I'll call it a night

8:11 AM
You monster.

Eep
That tablet I lusted for momentarily during the Super Bowl... is $800

just like that other tablet.

I'd pay $199. Tablets are netbooks without the hinged keyboard, right? And they don't even pay Microsoft for a Windows 7 Starter license! I'm only getting half a netbook, it shouldn't cost more.

@DanGrossman Well, except for that fancy touchscreen panel...

Pffth, I had a multitouch HP TX2 tablet PC with Windows, 4GB RAM, 320GB HD, etc. for less than $800. This is still only half of that!

8:19 AM
@DanGrossman im working on OS of an android tablet like that, i cant tell you more tho, secret stuff

@DanGrossman I guess people are then willing to pay $400 to not use Windows!

but if you guys have some ideas and stuff you can always tell me i can always work on some OS goodies in my spare time

@Reno awesome
That was my laptop before this one, the motherboard died and I didn't want to put $250 into replacing it :/
It made much more sense to spend $1200 on a new laptop, somehow.

Oops, meta offline for maintenance. Skull & crossbones
back again.

8:38 AM
Eep. Chrome just crashed with a memory exception. Maybe switching to beta branch to fix crashing wasn't a great idea.

What's community doing answering questions?

@Benjol That's a tag wiki

OK, so it's a new tag?

No, it's a new wiki
A tag wiki is actually a question, so someone needs to create and own it
So it's Community's job here

ok, I see.
I'm afraid I can't motivate myself for the new edit/approve thing. I've stopped visiting /review too.

9:21 AM
@Benjol Hrm... well, the fact that review isn't linked from anywhere sucks
It's just not as convenient to go type /review any time, even with location bar autocomplete

@YiJiang. Edit sucks: can't correct minor typos. Approval sucks: you can't improve a suggested edit, you can't approve it on your own, the diffs are difficult to parse visually, and (for me currently) there's still no link. Review sucks: there's no way to say "I've seen this, it's ok, remove it from the list please", and there's always this feeling that I'm reviewing stuff that n people have already reviewed so I'm just wasting my time. And there's no link, as you say.

@YiJiang I think that there's nothing in there which doesn't already have one (or more) associated meta questions

@Benjol True, but I don't believe any of them has gotten any amount of upvotes
Just put the rant out there, and I'm sure they'll see how to improve it, on a systematic level

Add this link

@YiJiang, ok thanks. Any others that you can spot?

Seriously though, popping the link the the suggested edits feature to 10k'ers and yet not adding the '/review' link is just plain wrong

@YiJiang, makes it seem like they're not confident in the /review section yet...
which makes it even weirder to generalise the edit functionality

It's not bad, but there's definitely more to be done. However, the same is with the suggested edits thing. Even more so, if you ask me

9:59 AM
Anyways, rep is the root of all evil. Most of the weirdness surrounding suggested edits is to avoid rep cheats
