Can someone explain to me how I am supposed to have a conference call with a voicemail box?
It's a very one-sided conversation

@drachenstern Uh.. no

> A Russian advertising executive who sued her boss for sexual harassment lost her case after a judge ruled that employers were obliged to make passes at female staff to ensure the survival of the human race
>_>
wow
I ... I have no constructive words to add to that ...
employers were OBLIGED to make sexual advances to the female staff members <-- do we still live in a world where this is considered "necessary"? With 7 billion people on the planet?

what can i say

Look! AskDifferent has got a new, nicer style for <kbd>!

Q: How do I empty /dev/null?

Jason MerandezHello, I am using Ubuntu 10.10. I am generally good with computers but mostly with Windows, I'm not very familiar with Ubuntu. I'm trying to setup a website and I'm talking with a friend I have who works for a school IT department who is giving me advice. He told me that I need to open a comma...

C l a s s i c !

@TimPost Well, due to technical limitations, you can only do it on the first day of the fourth month of the year....

@PopularDemand Speaking of that, I wonder what they're going to do this year. It will be hard to top the unicorns.

@TimPost Yeah, you "wonder." Like you don't have special mod-only access. Stop teasing us!

@PopularDemand I do have access to the time machine, but I can only go back, and it's a one way trip if you go back to a point where you didn't have moderator access.

...then you'll act smug about how you can read the future and be certain you'll be elected, alienate people and actually lose
this is really a feature to prevent time loops.

Hi, I have a weird look&feel bug with the search bar on Apple.SE
I'm only seeing it on Chrome on Windows
does anyone else have it ? (the corner should be round, not square)

@LoïcWolff No-repro on FF 3.6 XP

@PopularDemand yep, I tried on Firefox, it looks fine. I only have the issue in Chrome 9.0.597.84

oh wait, nm
I repro

The thing is... I noticed something similar in other sites : app.getflow.com/login
look at the background behind the login button

@TimPost thank you for a great laugh!

4:17 PM
So... it might be a Chrome bug. But I don't know if @Jin will/should do something about it.

I just searched SO via Google for "thx" and got four results in a row from the same user.

repro with firefox 3.6(ish) and chrome 8.0.552.237 (wait what? I thought I upgraded...)

@TimPost If you didn't want the diamond, you shouldn't have run in the election.

You may have a point there

Aaaaand we're back around to the time machine issue.

Jin
4:25 PM
@LoïcWolff @drachenstern that's a known win/linux chrome bug with box-shadow and border-radius. the Chrome team has fixed it on dev already. see: paulirish.com/2011/chrome-inset-box-shadow-bug-fixed

Well, there is no issue really. They don't let us go to the future out of fear that we'll moderate preemptively, then they'd have to write quantum mod tools.

@Jin OK, thanks for the feedback.

status-not-our-fault
wheeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Jin
@LoïcWolff FYI the latest official release of Chrome is 9. I'm curious if this has been fixed.

@Jin I'm on 9.0.597.84 and the bug's still there

4:29 PM
What do you call the thingy on the upper left corner that shows you the inbox all sites and hot questions?

@LoïcWolff lol who came up with that term? i can't find the Meta post about it..

@Jin, who names everything around here? @badp.

@LoïcWolff no ®? hehe thanks!

@Jin @badp

Didn't I post a picture of me wearing the Stack Overflow t-shirt before? :P

4:38 PM
@TimStone Yes, you did.
Not long after the millionth question.

I think I would have remembered that, due to feelings of insane jealousy it would have caused at the knowledge you have a Stack Overflow t-shirt

Josh must not have been around then, let's pretend it didn't happen

@TheRenamedException Ah, repression.

The question would have been @Tim, did the picture show your location better than your IP address? ;-)
@PopularDemand LOL.
On a more serious note, @Tim do you know anything about PA-DSS?

Nah, I think I cropped most of the background out. ;)

4:40 PM
yay BSOD again

...I don't know what that stands for, so maybe not. What is it?

Josh I'm just disappointed that my score currently outranks your score on sec.SE :\
@Trufa Or supercollider for short

It's been a while since we've seen muffincat in here. Or any of the other old... uh, things.

@PopularDemand Tyler must be preoccupied.

4:45 PM
@drachenstern That was my first visit to sec.SE!

@drachenstern that is a fuzzy name! thks!

Well, no, I visited last week when SF peeps sent me there

@TheRenamedException apparently it was not my first :\

but I need to answer moar questions

@TheRenamedException how many sites are you planning on 10k'ing on? And working at the same time? I'm impressed :p

4:46 PM
@TheRenamedException My thoughts are that you don't need to worry about it. I think the purpose of PA DSS is to make sure that the person who uses the software can't screw things up, which becomes unnecessary if no one else handles the software besides you (given that you're already PCI compliant). But, I don't deal with online merchanting, so it's possible I could be wrong.

@drachenstern HAHA, only SF. And I'm not doing well. it looks like I'll hot 10K on Meta long before SF

So the fun commences ya'll, I get to move my dev environment and other settings across the network to a Win7 box from XP... any tips/advice/should I make a post on SU?

@TimStone Thanks. I believe so too, but I am going to be grilled by a vendor st some point, so I wanted to be a little more sure :-)

@TimStone yeah that was my thoughts too

Also, the conference call with the voice mailbox was my boss' fault. It was 10AM PST not 10am EST :-)

@PopularDemand my jealousy worsens!

@PopularDemand and from that I deduce that he's in PA!!!

@PopularDemand SHHHHH don't tell everyone!!!
in my mind he's like 40ish, not 19ish

@TheRenamedException Yeah, that's understandable. We have some things that we're always worried about people grilling us about, and it's hard to convince them that what they're talking about is really a non-issue sometimes.

4:49 PM
@drachenstern I can't tell if this is a compliment or not.

@drachenstern I was going to say something similar, or at least older than I

@drachenstern I'm definitely above the legal drinking age.
Josh knows how old I am anyway, he just doesn't know it. :P

@PopularDemand I can't either :p ... I'm pretty sure it's a compliment. He seems very much more knowledgeable, but then again, I do too, and I'm not really all that old :\
@TimStone I'm pretty sure I do too...

@TimStone or maybe I am not saying everything I know. Or maybe I don't know how much I say about what I do not know...

@TheRenamedException I will also accept these as possibilities :D

4:51 PM
Hiya all.

@Moshe greetings headless wonder!

So the fun commences ya'll, I get to move my dev environment and other settings across the network to a Win7 box from XP... any tips/advice/should I make a post on SU?

@Moshe I think I found your head rolling on the floor.
maybe, um, pick it up and stove it back in place.

@drachenstern What kind of concerns were you having about that? I want to say it should go smoothly, but I have no idea what you're really planning.

Why is everyone suddenly commenting on my lack of head? Its been like that for
Months.

4:54 PM
@TimStone you know that there are two different profile types on windows networks right? Vista (NT6) changed the format from XP (NT5) and I recall that the same basic thing happened with NT5's release but I forget now (cos I was a wee lad when that happened)

insert headless process joke here

@drachenstern Ahhh, gotcha.

So all my profile stuff is lost as it were, I don't remember where all the dev env stuff is stored, I'm nervous what I'll lose, I'm nervous what I'll forget, I don't know how long this box will last before giving up the ghost

@badp - you mean shove or stove?

pings @RebeccaChernoff

4:55 PM
it's almost a SF question (user profiles on an NT network) but it's also an SU question (profile in general, files on computer) and it's almost an SO question (dev tools) so should I post it on MSO and let the WoM determine my destination?

on the phone with lenovo

OK, not that important. :)

@RebeccaChernoff bah, that's no excuse

UGGGG!!! Still the same issue @RebeccaChernoff?

@drachenstern I think it's an SF question.
Heh, I was amused by the view count.

4:59 PM
@TimStone View Count Not Found

:D
I have far too many Chrome/V8 source tabs open..

@TimStone Should've been 17,280 really, then it would've been amusing :P

this lady has no clue, oy

@PopularDemand good god that workstation looks bad ass :D

@RebeccaChernoff I hate that!

5:01 PM
Should we shake a fist at her?

Apparently, despite this page NEVER MENTIONING USB ONCE the only way to have multiple external monitors IS TO CONNECT THEM WITH USB

@TimStone I think you should suggest The FistShake Exception

Commence fist shaking.

Q: Migrating user (developer) profile from XP to NT6 (Vista,7) ~ What do I need to be mindful of?

drachensternIf it's a dupe, lemme know and redirect me and I'm on my way guys. I'm a dev on Visual Studio, I have 2005, 2008 and 2010 installed atm, along with VB6, and SqlServer Dev 2005, 2008 installed as well, not to mention various and sundry developer's tools like Notepad++ and ReSharper and Reflector....

@drachenstern how is this on-topic?

@TheRenamedException to the room or to SF?

To ServerFault

@TheRenamedException NT5 vs NT6 profiles and managing the move of the info
if you think it belongs on SU move it

5:06 PM
I don't want to do that to you! :-)

My point is I don't want to lose the things like VS cache information that VS keeps in my user profile that don't normally get exported
@TheRenamedException if it's the right thing for the site then do it

@TimPost hahahahaha

If it gets migrated I guess that's my bad, but there is stuff about migrating profiles on SF. Though generally it's more of a "I need to migrate everyone's profile", but..

@TimStone ergo they can tell me what I need to do to move MY profile (and they can tell me in-detail and correctly)

seriously, go look at the Stack Overflow faq and see how much rep it takes to create a tag. Go ahead, I'll wait here.
@TheRenamedException it is in the workplace ;)

That's what I was thinking, but I haven't had caffeine yet, so listening to me at this hour may or may not be a wise decision.

@drachenstern did anybody notice the messageID there?

@TimPost so great

Oh did he get the half millionth post?

5:10 PM
@TimStone That's... quite something.

@TimStone I only noticed because we're at 500xxx right now

Dammit, he did. But that amused me, so it's all good :P
@PopularDemand Yeah, heh. Oh Yahoo!... shakes head

rofl. After not talking for 5 minutes while she was typing, she asked if she could put me on hold. At least now I get fun hold music interspersed with marketing blah blah blah.

oh that SUCKS

C'mon Lenovo! I want to concentrate on other things!

5:12 PM
I hate those intermissions

Your mistake was thinking that technical support could help you.

@RebeccaChernoff I feel for you! What a pain in the neck. Any way you can ask to be escalated?

She'll probably just tell you to go by one of those thingadongdongs we were talking about, heh. :P

I was doubtful, but had to give it a shot. Apparently I'm masochistic. ):

5:13 PM
@TimStone should've asked on SuperUser.com :-)

@TheRenamedException I know, right?
@RebeccaChernoff Isn't this your third "shot" now? I might have to reaffirm that second point, then.

@TimStone, but the page says it should work! q:
Eh Saturday they said they couldn't verify my warranty and I had to wait until today
That department doesn't work weekends.

Which page? :o

@TimStone the one on the Lenovo website IIRC

hahaha apparently all that time was getting me the migr id to a dock that isn't mine. Meanwhile, at the start of the call I asked if the migr id to the page I was looking at online would be helpful and she said no.

5:16 PM
When were we discussing this? Saturday?

Luckily I'm still on the amused side of the very thin amused/frustrated-to-the-point-of-anger line.

@RebeccaChernoff shakes fits at useless tech support workers

@drachenstern The days run together for me, I have no idea.

@RebeccaChernoff making fun of them online helps you stay on that side of the line, no? (-:

@RebeccaChernoff Just scream at her "DON'T YOU KNOW WHO I WORK FOR?"

This is mine, with a link to the multiple monitor config. This is what she linked me to.

yesterday, by Rebecca Chernoff

The system has a very odd idea of Yesterday

Just be sure that when you tell her about working for SOIS, you don't also link her to the "Worst software you've ever used" thread that has a post that demolishes Lotus Notes.

(which I understand and has been thrashed out immensely)
Hey Josh does that post of mine have any close votes yet?

The only greater failure is Microsoft Bob, as far as thrashing goes.

5:19 PM
@TimStone and @RebeccaChernoff in seriousness you'd be surprised what telling a company you work for a company with a powerful voice can do...

@drachenstern Well, 4 AM on the 6th sounds right.

@drachenstern I realized I misspoke, I don't have close vote powers, LOL

@TimStone except it's not
@TheRenamedException lol, well you could've tagged it :p

@drachenstern That's what the timestamp says

@drachenstern tagged it?

5:20 PM
@TheRenamedException flagged it, whatever

lmao, yes, that

@drachenstern No close votes. I do have view close votes powers.
That reminds me...

@TheRenamedException does mod flagging allow that?

@drachenstern I don't know

5:22 PM
@RebeccaChernoff Does running two separate monitors directly from the laptop work?
We all know this is nVidia's fault anyway, no sense in ignoring that fact. :P
Oh crap, Gaming's Town Hall is in two hours.

@TimStone It is?
I must answer my meta question now then

@TheRenamedException Well, two and a half anyway, just got the email reminder.
Then the second one is in eight and a half hours

Aol bought huffington post...

Q: How can we improve the Town Hall Digests?

The Renamed Exception TL;DR version: If you saw my Town Hall Digests, what can be done to improve them, given Michael Mrozek's format and Yi Jiang's GM script? @PopularDemand good answer on that <kbd> post.

I would do a meta post

5:38 PM
@Jin Thank you!
I guess this day won't be full of depression after all.

@TimStone I think Yi Jiang's script makes this much easier, did you get a copy? I'd still love any help with this :-)

I didn't.

I'm proposing a template now

@Jin Still, regular keyboards don't have monospaced text on their keys. I understand it'd be a pretty large change when taken network wide, but can we get Sans Serif kbd?
(Yes, it'd make castle making harder. We all know that's one of the primary use cases of kbd.)

@badp Did someone say Comic Sans?

5:44 PM
@PopularDemand You have a keyboard with Comic Sans on it?

Jin
@badp i'm skared to break The Castle.

@badp No, but when you said that it made me think of how hilariously sad such a keyboard would look.

@PopularDemand I'm pretty sure there's a few children "computers" with that anyway
