Q: Developing a new complex travel website

It needs to interface to our inventory to take the conference facility, hotel rooms etc. out of inventory once a contract has been signed (e-signature) and deposit paid. If you were starting fr...

Just ... ... ... wow.
My feet are freezing.

-_-
o_o
Maybe it wasn't a good idea to migrate that question..
@drachenstern Yeah he has something that works.. If he wants to optimize it 'just because' but doesn't know how, I don't feel compelled to help.
@Fosco agreed there
new behavior found ... a way to escalate a comment score ...
If you upvote on SO, and the question gets migrated to (eg) P.SE after you upvote, and you are on both sites, you can upvote the question again.
Not sure that it's a "bug" per-se
@TylerChacha Yeah, I was about to comment just as it migrated
People don't fully understand where the distinction between SO / P.SE / close lies
New Blog Post: Code: Reuse and Recycle - chacha102.com/code-reuse-and-recycle
18:17
I just don't think it's a valid question, it's too localized
"We want to write some software, what should we do and how long will it take us"
@drachenstern Fully agree
@TylerChacha Agathe von Trapp died last week. :(
@TylerChacha I would include something about diagrams helping to pinpoint places with common code after pseudocoding
Only 62 Precognitive badges awarded on Programmers SE? Does that seem low to anyone else?
@PopularDemand no
18:24
Next question, then: is it bad to correct most posts for spelling and grammar?
@PopularDemand Why would it possibly be bad?
Unless you were unsure about changing the meaning
@marcog One primary purpose of closing is to keep information concentrated in one place while making it findable by people who use totally different search terms.
If you keep correcting a common misspelling, people who use that misspelling will continue to not be able to find the "destination question."
@PopularDemand isn't Google supposed to fix mispellings?
@Pollyanna Hmm, interesting point
@PopularDemand That's a very good point that a lot of people (read: me) don't think about much.
18:28
How about searching over revision history?
s/Pollyanna/PopularDemand
@marcog That could work. I wonder how much of a performance hit it would be. And whether it would increase false positives substantially.
@PopularDemand Search the first and current revision if performance is an issue. Rank non-current revision hits lower.
@PopularDemand so in other words SOIS needs to implement a better word-spell-check feature in search?
I concur
18:35
@PopularDemand Google is the search interface :P
Who's going to write this MSO requset up? <-- see we need spelling correction!
What is the request?
@drachenstern The revision history searching?
I guess I could if people think it's worth discussing
I think what @radp said already kind of trumps the whole discussion. :P
18:38
@marcog no, the spelling corrections on search
@drachenstern Damn you... I wanted you to type it out and I would just quote you..
@TimStone They aren't interested. All they see is an opportunity for more meta reps.
Precious, yummy meta reps.
@drachenstern Spell correction on search isn't all that easy
my precious repssssss
2
@marcog I'm well aware of that
I actually did a full semester undergrad assignment on that
@radp Ah, then they're already too far gone then.
18:39
:)
mah reps,
mah reps, mah reps, mah reps,
mah lovely lil' reps
mah reps, mah reps, mah reps,
check 'em out!
(she's got me votiiin')
don't get me going, I could convert the whole song.
@radp I think you're wrong :p (taunt taunt)
I don't think SOIS need more of that.
@radp I thought you were gonna do reps, not hovels
@drachenstern It's a different song. Duh.
18:44
Clicking through seems unwise
bah with the clicking ... hold please
I'm still not seeing reps there
I'm also not seeing anything constructive
I like how that post got starred on chat.SE but flagged here
@MichaelMrozek The relevant video also got starred here I'm sure :)
What the icosahedrons?
18:47
What is Feeds doing in here? Is that the user that deletes flagged posts?
Did @TylerChacha just go on a starring spree?
Hahahah
@PopularDemand I recognize the shape but not the reason for the exclamation
@MichaelMrozek I thought that was a sockpuppet
@MichaelMyers Who me? Couldn't be..
@drachenstern That was my reaction to the post that just got flag-deleted.
18:50
@PopularDemand what am I missing, how does one know that it got "flag deleted"?
@MichaelMrozek Nah, Feeds (and Diago) just wanted to join the Orange Avatar Club.
Is this a 10k thing?
@drachenstern One gets 10k rep and watches the flag counter climb.
@PopularDemand well you should bounty me 1k rep ;)
@drachenstern I dunno... what've you done for me lately?
18:51
@PopularDemand not been an annoying pain in the neck? :p
@drachenstern Well, okay, but that's only because I was gone for a few weeks.
If I expected everyone I asked 1k rep for to give it to me .. I would have like 647 rep on MSO
> 125 right, 3 wrong, 0 ignored, 0 exceptions
So close...argh.
I'm in the Server Fault room. They don't have enough starred posts

Ah good, that means that H&R Block will have even more time to do my work for me.
I think for the first time in 14 months my wife and I will finally be keeping both checking accounts positive for a month. yay to getting our expenses in line!
Very \o/
I believe one of our members has disappeared ... it's like she turned blue and now has to ... work or something!
Jeff Atwood

I’m pleased to announce that we’re kicking off 2011 with even more new blood on the team, including Rebecca Chernoff.

Rebecca will be working remotely for us from Missouri, in a hybrid role of technical evangelist and community coordinator.

If you’ve spent any time at all on our network — and in particular on our (excellent, amazing, best-in-class, choose your superlatives, they all apply) web chat system — you’ve probably run into Rebecca and her unusual backwards smileys at some point. In addition to being one of our very first pro-tem moderators for Webapps, she is apparently everywhere! In fact, when we took informal polls of who from the community we should hire as another community coordinator, she was almost universally at the top of everyone’s list. Including our own list. Yes, she is that cool. …

19:07
Bonus points to Jeff for mentioning backwards smilies :P
I wonder if it was intentional for "very cool userscripts" to link to the blog post about chat launching; it seemed like it would link to her github page
@MichaelMrozek "Welcome to the team, Rebecca Chernoff! It should be apparent to you that we value you just a bit less than we value Nick Craver!"
Hm, are Valued Associates no longer being assigned dehumanizing serial numbers?
2
@PopularDemand I was just rechecking the post looking for that
> <Diago> I declare today wrong way smiley day in honor of @RebeccaChernoff promotions (:
2
Damn it; I was told that worked if it was cross-site
@MichaelMrozek Copy-and-paste fail, it would seem.
@PopularDemand I think they've stepped up to microchipping them.
2
19:10
Today I learned what RSS means.
@TimStone Probably a good idea, given the geographically diverse nature of the team.
@PopularDemand Naturally. Retrofit Rovio with a locator, set it to stalk mode, and productivity is assured.
@PopularDemand o: lol
@RebeccaChernoff If your first task is "get Rovio a passport," you may want to consider other employment options.
Jeff just tweeted about how distributed the team is now, and linked to a blog post from three months ago; the same one he linked to erroneously in rchern's blog post. He's not doing well with the copy/paste today
19:19
@RebeccaChernoff You got an awesome blog post :) Happy for you!
@drachenstern: "@MichaelPetrotta you have been summoned to chat ..."
oy
lol
it's funny tho :p
it was because of the @-Michael issue
(trying to avoid highlighting any Michael there ;] )
I need to set it up to text me. Chat is top priority
19:21
yeah, I saw that. I avoid the multiple-Michael issue at work, surprisingly.
@MichaelPetrotta I think you just volunteered to build the SMS interface to SE chat.
I should get a Rovio and have it hand-deliver me chat notifications.
I would get lynched.
Unfortunately that would require me to not be in chat long enough to get said notifications.
@TimStone unpossible, clearly.
19:22
@TimStone yes you should ;)
@Fosco thank-ye (:
Howdy all.

i need to re-match Tim on WwF...
@radp I could rely on the fact that if I'm in chat on my phone, I still get multicollider notifications.
Oh we're all happy for you, w'ere just curious when they let you out for lunch and exercise :p
19:23
I am, oddly enough, always available for WwF ;)
@Jin Smackdown!
I should probably tend to my WwF's
Wait, the second "W" isn't capitalized.
@MichaelMyers Words with Friends.
eyes test code
19:24
Not World Wrestling Foundation?
Jin
Jin
or World Wildlife Foundation
@Pollyanna Ahoy hoy.
@Jin Well, that wouldn't be a smackdown.
@MichaelMyers I dunno, have you ever tried to go one-on-one with a panda?
@TimStone Kung Fu or otherwise?
19:26
Either/or, I suppose.
Jin
Jin
pandas can be jerks
@PopularDemand I couldn't think of a snarky enough answer for your recent spelling question, so I had to resort to logic. Sorry.
Ok I totally agree with Jeff on his latest blogpost
And it's scary
@Jin Hahahah, wtf.
@drachenstern At this point I'm going to have to assume you're probably talking about Coding Horror, not the SO blog.
19:28
Oh, that makes more sense
Agreeing about @RebeccaChernoff being a valued member of the community is suspicious
3
@MichaelMyers indeed. I didn't think there was much to "totally agree with" on the SO blog :p ... except being exceedingly happy for @RebeccaChernoff to get in with SOIS (cos I predict it's gonna be a great experience for her and I'm jealous :p )
@MichaelMrozek I'll leave that to @YiJiang ;)

in The SO Tavern (General) on Stack Overflow Chat, 3 mins ago, by George Stocker
can we get a mod on this guy? http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4595859/specific-javascript-reference-manual
Since there's more blue here than there, I think. :P
I hear there's a magic button right on the post for attracting mod attention
@TimStone He posted to MSO earlier today, too, if I recall correctly.
19:36
@MichaelMrozek I believe the intent was to flag attention less directly
@PopularDemand Yeah, I seem to remember reading something as well.
I don't like his question, but he hasn't done anything offensive or spammy. Not sure why we need a mod to jump in.

Q: Why was my question being closed as subjective and argumentative?

daniel.sedlacekWhy was my question being closed as subjective and argumentative? What is your favourite JavaScript reference manual? Just search StackOverflow for "what is your favourite" and you will see hundreds of such questions with tens of votes, even added to community wiki. This is not a flame war q...

My friend just got a 2009 MacBook for $80 with a dead logic board
@Moshe That sounds like a win.
Oh, and hi all.
19:42
:428425 No complaints.
@Pollyanna - It is, IMHO.
I would like to lodge a complaint about you removing the post I was replying to just as I sent my reply.
It would cost $280 to fix at Apple.
So, I told him to fix it.
Who said I was being harsh yesterday on Meta?
@PopularDemand I actually looked at the questions now and decided that I don't really have a strong opinion on the situation. :P
19:43
@drachenstern - I got GitHub really working today. Yay!
@Moshe nice and congrats
@drachenstern I did, and coming from me that's something; I'm rude on meta every day
@MichaelMrozek then hit chat.SO/tavern :p
Thanks. Now I have one less excuse why I'm not working on that project.
19:44
@MichaelMrozek That's why they hired @RebeccaChernoff to make sure you never become a Meta mod.
@Moshe Congrats on giting with the program.
@TimStone Suckers. She would've done that for free
@Pollyanna Heh
She is pretty crafty, yes..
19:45
I have returned
@Pollyanna groan
Oh!
@TheNeedsMoarJqueryException wb
Congrats to @RebeccaChernoff for her blog entry!
@RebeccaChernoff is in blue!
19:45
She is indeed
@TheNeedsMoarJqueryException she's blogging now too? OMG the world is ending!
just noticed
Oh wait, that's in 23 months isn't it?
And I just had an idea for a userscript...
@drachenstern Jeff is blogging about her
@TheNeedsMoarJqueryException I know :p the joke was the next part
19:46
AHAHAHAAHAHA this is f-ing great
@TheNeedsMoarJqueryException your meeting went well we can presume?
you were gone quite a bit of time
@TheNeedsMoarJqueryException - What meeting?
> If you’ve spent any time at all on our network — and in particular on our (excellent, amazing, best-in-class, choose your superlatives, they all apply) web chat system — you’ve probably run into Rebecca and her unusual backwards smileys at some point.
Heh
Link?
@drachenstern I met with our CEO for lunch afterwards. But yes! It went well, thanks.

19:47
@TheNeedsMoarJqueryException YAY! WOOHOO! Awesome, and glad to hear it. Now you're buying us all dinner right?
@Moshe see the bottom of every SOIS page?
@drachenstern Well no money exchanged hands (yet), but sure, why not. It'll have to be on the cheap though ;-)
it says ... "blog"
@TheNeedsMoarJqueryException Now I'm hungry.
@drachenstern - yea,
@TheNeedsMoarJqueryException :p I got some frank-n-beans for just such an occasion ;)
19:48
well...
@TimStone yeah lunch is late here too ... time to go across the street
Erm, how do I do a backwards capital D? @RebeccaChernoff ?
I have a few silly ideas for userscipts, actually.
and no time. ttyl folks!
@drachenstern - enjoy lunch.
@TheNeedsMoarJqueryException Hey, I could somewhat-reasonably hold you to that.
(|-:
@PopularDemand Yes, yes you could
If this works out the way I hope it will, you're all invited for dinner XD
19:51
@TheNeedsMoarJqueryException Now I just have to figure out if it's worth driving seven hours to go to McDonald's with someone from the Internet who's kinda annoyed at having to put his money where his mouth is.
We still have a few things to hash out however, LOL
@PopularDemand - I can't do McDonalds, I keep kosher.
@PopularDemand lmao
I read the blog posts about Nick and rchern and thought to myself "what would Jeff write if I got hired?". I got more depressed as I thought about it and finally concluded I can avoid this problem by never working for SOIS
@PopularDemand Wait until we close the deal, then I'll upgrade to German food and will lose the annoyance
19:52
@TheNeedsMoarJqueryException Oh good. This will be a nice compliment to my waving at you as I flew over your house the other day.
@Moshe I think you missed the joke, and what happened to ttyl
@moshe Ɑ:
@MichaelMrozek We'd have to specially theme the blog post so that it inspired pure fear in the hearts of readers.
anyone know if markdown works in blog comments?
@TimStone "Michael Mrozek is active on SO sometimes, and is mean to people on meta. And...that's it"
19:53
we need starring for blog post comments. Just for @LanceRoberts.
@TheNeedsMoarJqueryException I don't think so
@MichaelMrozek mine would say "we hired the world's laziest programmer and we're pretty sure he'll be able to help us figure things out before we go under ... but at least he has a nice beard" since my beard isn't online anywhere and I can't show you (which means I should imgurl it)
@balpha Hahah
@balpha Well, what are you waiting for? Make @RebeccaChernoff get right on that.
19:54
ok, you can at least star it even tho it won't OB :(
@MichaelMrozek "We were looking for a trusty worth individual to add to the team, so we turned to @MichaelMrozek. What a terrible, terrible mistake that was. Five minutes into being given access to our development environment, he trashed all of our Windows boxes and replaced them with Gentoo. SO will be offline until further notice."
@TimStone I don't know C# either, so we'll have to rewrite SO in C++
@balpha haha totally.
(If I ever apply to SOIS, let's keep this whole conversation under wraps)
@TimStone which reminds me, one day I'll have to try if SO compiles with mono
19:57
Heheh
@balpha since it's all serverside it should
Unless you're using Drawing ;)
@balpha Just e-mail the code to me, I'll try it
@balpha You should submit the SOIS engine to the mono project as a test case.
oh but wait, I think you have a member on staff who's had image issues with .NET on servercode who might be able to help ...

Q: One Box Github in chat?

MosheCan we get One Boxing to occur for github links in chat? GitHub is about code and so is SO. I can see the Repo link, name and description being useful in chat. Thoughts?

19:59
@RebeccaChernoff you now need to edit your profile to say "Stack Overflow Valued Associate #000..."
@TimStone "We wanted to hire someone exceptionally qualified from SO, but nobody near the top of the rep leagues was looking for a job. So we looked for someone qualified, but couldn't find anyone we liked. So we looked for someone who would at least not cause much trouble; again, no luck. So we looked for someone who wasn't named Michael Mrozek, but they all declined. And that leads us to where we are today...."
