8:00 AM
autocompletion suggests full names though, not nicknames?

@marc while you are messing with the starred area be sure the css is set to word-wrap:break-word in there, man

How do I get to the FAQ from here?

"help" (bottom right)

@joe good point.. clicking help will get you there
@marc add an explicit faq link down there as well

8:01 AM
ok

let's reorder it to
help | faq | legal
since, really, who gives a horse's arse about legal? :)

@Jeff - Only if there's a secret $1000 hidden in there somewhere.

not sure about this chat thing

you will be sure, once you watch this.

8:03 AM

the man your man could smell like!

Gav
wow this is pretty different. Looks good, wonder how it will work with high volumes
something very google wave about it :)

ack! don't say wave! JInX!

Especially not now =P

Gav
Couldnt resist

8:04 AM
who said wave?

Thought I'd come and check out chat on my iPhone. Nice work, a big improvement on the pre beta.

wave's dead

Gav
long live chat.meta :)

Normal view still doesn't work though.

8:07 AM
@Andy - yes; @balpha and @jin did a good job there. I'm sure it (the mobile view) will evolve more too.

ok, see you guys!

in regards to the bouncing profile pic, would you consider making it stop bouncing if I was seen/read the message that caused it to start bouncing. I am not sure if that can be done, but it is really neat how you add a dotted line to tell me what I last read. I agree with the benifit of it bouncing, but I do not like clicking on it to make it stop.
or does it stop when I send a message?

@joe that is also in the /faq -- you're on a roll :)

haha

@MarcG: there's a couple of issues but the interface is very nice :)

8:09 AM
yeah mobile view is still WIP

How does /faq work?

OK; this should now appear as markdown - does it need links too? chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/faq or is that automatic

@jeff what section is it in? I did not see a section on "bouncing profile image"

@jeff hence beta? :)

> A mention will also cause your avatar to bounce up and down
"How do I get someone's attention?"

8:11 AM
No FAQ link in the bottom right corner? Seems a logical place to put it.

@Craig reload

@MarcGravell - Now reloaded! LOL I see what you did there! :)

@marc excellent, starred area much improved

meta.chat.stackoverflow.com - The dynamically-ever-updating application. See it change before your very eyes! :)

still looking for the auto-link method...

8:13 AM
@CraigTP, in fairness, he had changed it before your remark, but not long before.

eerrr...chat.meta. Actually. Maybe we do need a meta.chat.meta.c.....oh forget it.

status-meta-cliche

@Marc, bottom right and starred area changes should have saved you a ton of questions, now just have to work out something for the dotted line ;)

I keep having to defend the term "meta" for SE 2.0.. as in "normals" won't get it. Well, if "normals" use Wikipedia then they can be trained. It really is the correct word, and there is no better word, IMO.

it was suggested to add a hover to the dotted line
the problem is: that is actually a border on the chat item, not an element itself

8:14 AM
@marc how can you hover on a dotted LINE?

@Benjol - I've just seen the messages...I'm just amazed at the speed of development and deployment here... Kudos to all!

that's like mouse acrobatics.

how about just adding a text below it, grayed out

so would require some subtle layout / etc changes to do it
@Jeff - carefully ;p

and remove it after a while? sort of like training wheels

8:15 AM
@Lasse - same problem... non-trivial to implement

people just need to figure stuff out, IMO. Dotted line not THAT hard to grok, really.
and it's in the /faq.

I'm not saying that we can't do it - I'm just saying that is why we didn't add it as soon as it was suggested

ok, and yes, stop BOUNCING!

@Lasse sorry; too much caffeine

Shouldn't hovering over peoples' names in the top right show their flair, rather than just a tooltip?
Not that I'm particularly keen to show off my rather sad meta rep ;)

8:17 AM
brb

I'm off for the night - great work, @marc and @balpha. Loving it; looking forward to using it for real (rather than just for feedback)

oooh bobince (cthulu author) is on. let me try to get him to chat.
> The website at meta.stackoverflow.com contains elements from the site www.xbox365.com, which appears to host malware – software that can hurt your computer or otherwise operate without your consent. Just visiting a site that contains malware can infect your computer.
hmm.
<p><img src="http://www.xbox365.com/gdb/images/GGGruGdPLG04221653/Xbox_360_366_500.jpg"></p>

any chance we can get imdb links to be magic links like wikipedia and se?

You know, this is probably the first web-chat implementation that could convince me it can surpass IRC.

@NickJohnson -NETSPLIT! :)

8:25 AM
Now it just needs an open-source implementation and a federation protocol. :)
@Craig
er. @CraigTP Heh!

Haha, netsplits, hope they don't bring back that "feature" :)

Q: Offer an XMPP method for chat

Greg HewgillThis is a request for the SO chat system to have an XMPP interface. The whole idea of a chat system is to bring people together, and a key way of doing that is to allow people to access the system using more than one method. Right now there's a web interface, but it's limited to being a web inte...

@JeffAtwood, re dotted line, yes and no. Lot's of people have asked the question. They could/should have read the faq, but they didn't. At some point if you don't want every 15th post to be "what's with the dotted line?", you have to surrender to the idiocy of the masses :)

never underestimate the power of the faq

"this is probably the first web-chat implementation that could convince me it can surpass IRC." http://goo.gl/u0Ms

8:27 AM
how about adding some tooltip or little text to the dotted line (new messages below) etc

@Marc, I know technically it's not possible right now, but graphically there is room for text at the left of the dotted line

Aah!

@Juha - scroll up about a page for the discussion on that...

and I think that there should be only one dotted line, earlier ones shoud be removed when new line is added

From here:
in Chat feedback, 2010-08-05, by Marc Gravell
it was suggested to add a hover to the dotted line
@Juha - they are; there are 3

8:28 AM
Toot

hover to a line is ridiculous, you can't mouse hover on a LINE!

with 1, it is too easy to lose it when tabbing etc

hi @scott

@Jeff - ok, ok; not a hover. We get it ;p

8:29 AM
Sa da tay!

Keeping old lines also gives you a better idea just how short your attention span really is

Pootie Tang is an American comedy film written and directed by Louis C.K. and released in 2001. It was adapted from a comedy sketch that first appeared on The Chris Rock Show. The character Pootie Tang is a satire of the stereotyped characters who appeared in old blaxploitation films. His speech, which vaguely resembles pidgin, is mostly unintelligible to the audience, but the other characters in the film have no problem understanding him. Plot Pootie Tang, born in "a small city outside of Gary, Indiana", is portrayed as a ladies' man who is "too cool for words" even as a young child. H...
@tzenes so when you were asking about imdb onebox support, the above is why I don't think it's necessary

lolwhat

Jeff tweets. the place busies up

My original suggestion (from beta) was to have new posts with some kind of background fade, what was the discussion about doing it differently

8:30 AM
how'd you do that?

I'm not a fan of the obnoxious star-trek communicator noise

@Marc this is also on hacker news now: news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1577443

we onebox certain links if we know what they are

Ah, there's the mute button

nice

8:31 AM
Hey @Scott

5
Q: What links and sites are handled specially in chat?

Juha SyrjäläThere is special linking to some sites in chat. What is the full list of supported and integrated sites?

@Gareth You can modify it in the top right, but I agree, it was cute for the first few times, annoying thereafter

name completion in the send box would be nice

always open to extra suggestions for special handling

8:31 AM
@Steve - there is when you use a @ - tab complete etc

that red highlight on new messages is a bit annoying. another color perhaps?

@MarcGravell ah, so there is, used to no @ sign on IRC :-)

@Scott - no bing at the moment; no google either

needs to be on its own line
otherwise formatting would be a PITA

8:32 AM
press up arrow to edit, scott

are tweets displayed in UTC rather than local time?

you mean oneboxed tweets? they might be UTC. times here are local

I'm having trouble logging into my Farmvilles. Where did you put my Farmvilles?

(sorry; was talking jibberish)

"Tweeted by codinghorror on August 5, 2010 at 8:26 AM" which is like.. 8 hours in the future

8:33 AM
looks cool, not sure if I'd use it over Twitter / normal SO though

hm, but you didn't onebox that wikipedia link

@FryGuy Looks like the past to me ;)

@Scott - it is deleted; maybe the API hates deleted items

Thankyou! I need to tend my carrots.

8:34 AM
@NickJohnson well.. you're wrong :)

So this is Google Wave...

I'm assuming the mods have "special powers" to stop people just coming on and repeating "PLZ ANSWER QUESTION PLX?!" :-)

@steve you must have 20 {parent site} rep to talk

@Steve yes. We can point and laugh

8:34 AM
@JeffAtwood sure, but 20 aint much, there's plenty of numpties with more than that

Awesome! It's Google Wave but you need rep to talk!

Hm...so the one box is a local thing

awesome!

/kick @jongalloway

can I troll in this chat or its prohibited?

8:35 AM
/op @scott hanselman

scott, no, you have to link the autotune version!

/kick @val

@ScottHanselman I prefer this version: youtube.com/…

/mode +b !*hanselman@

@Scott - not sure I understand the question; most (not quite all) are applied at the server

8:35 AM
doesn't play inline....
now I'm blocked!
;)

:-(

How do you onebox?

@FryGuy just paste a URL that we know about

8:36 AM
Does each chat have a permalink?

"invite this user back to this room" that sounds.. dodgy

i think it is using this fancy ajayx stuff

/join warez

guess it is written in xml almost completely

hmm do i need to trim the youtube cruft? youtube.com/watch?v=hMtZfW2z9dw

8:37 AM
@scott yes, use the gutter menu to get to permalink and flagging

I read about it on expert in sex change

@Steve - I was going to say that myself yesterday... I stopped because I thought it said more about me just mentioning it! :) At least someone else thinks so!

@Jeff, so Scott doesn't have to read the faq? ;)

(the rock version)

8:37 AM
:D

interesting

@Benjol scott's a noob, he needs our care and feeding :)

Wasn't social stuff the one thing you said you'd never do, @Jeff

8:38 AM
@jon the rationale is covered in the blog post, here blog.stackoverflow.com/2010/04/…

@MarcGravell is this what you've been working on?

The third place is a term used in the concept of community building to refer to social surroundings separate from the two usual social environments of home and the workplace. In his influential book The Great Good Place, Ray Oldenburg (1989, 1991) argues that third places are important for civil society, democracy, civic engagement, and establishing feelings of a sense of place. Oldenburg calls one's "first place" the home and those that one lives with. The "second place" is the workplace — where people may actually spend most of their time. Third places, then, are "anchors" of community...

nice change I bet :-)

more fun than "Service Call" etc ;p

8:39 AM
Longer than 140 chars, didn't read

@MarcGravell I hope @JeffAtwood makes you fill a form in and wait 2 weeks for any changes you make to the live system just to make you feel at home ;-)

take away the "Testing - " and it'll work (up to edit)

This seems pretty cool.. Is this using "HTML5" at all? or just periodic ajax refreshes?

8:40 AM
Will there be any type of meta-commands to chat? Like "/me" and such?

wow! its like what-I-think-of-is-what-I-get

@SteveRobbins I am sure my insane nitpicky demands more than make up for any lack of Brazil form-filling bureaucracy for @marc

Gav
how about /slap? I miss that one

how you guys are posting stackoverflow question inline in chat?

8:40 AM
@FryGuy I said it is written in xml

@FryGuy - mainly not; there might be some for the inter-tab comms (optional)

also those wiki pages and videos... ;-?

Post the link

When is webcam support coming?

8:41 AM
Wow, did you purchase Google Wave? :)

I'm torn about this.

The true chatroulette?

Q: List of freely available programming books

KaranI'm trying to amass a list of programming books with opensource licenses, like Creative Commons, GPL, etc. The books can be about a particular programming language or about computers in general. What are some freely available programming books?

Gav
cool

8:41 AM
Here's the thing. It's brilliant. Truly. I bow to your awesome design-ness.

A/S/L ?!

not working for me

But I've got twitter, and facebook, and while this is SO fun, I don't feel productive.

@scott this is the "corner bar", the third place. It's like 20% about work

But we have twitter

8:42 AM
@scott, isn't that a good thing? Imagine what would happen if you felt productive in here. You'd actually not get anything done at all

and 80% about "I love these people"

should we wait for Google closing Chrome OS to get SO-OS?

Now this is ONE more tab to have open

@JeffAtwood more like 110%

one more place to check
one more party to stay at until 3am because "something cool might happen..."

8:43 AM
I foresee plenty of "I just love you man " this friday night after some beers here :)

"Oh, DUDE, you left....RIGHT after you left these chicks came in...."

like what?

yeah, but you can dip in and out. it's stateful. low traffic rooms are like work logs

lemme say this.

each room is a topic, right -- some are slower, faster, smaller, larger

8:43 AM
I'm not sure about this as a third place
BUT
I'd pay to use this for work.

Might be cool during conference keynotes

great tool

I'd like to be able to put this in an iFrame on my site
DUDE

we don't want your filthy money, man! we're about the community! :)

@jeff chat.everysite.com

8:44 AM
@ScottHanselman I think you should consider a carreer in social media marketing

@JeffAtwood then I can have automatic chat for any site

Need ability to customize the audio notification. I want #sadtrombone

like facebook did with like
I want to point my DNS CName at your site
and give you money
so I can have HanselChat

            ___
           /\ \
          / \/ \

When is link shortening going to happen? chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/rooms/77/chat-feedback should be chat.so/77

8:45 AM
OK - so, the timing thing for abuse is set WAY WAY WAY WAY too low

boo. ASCII art #fail

Or some such

@Steve - fixed that for you

@steve indent 4 spaces, I did it for you via the code button

seriously

8:45 AM
ooh, it's fixed
hehe, cool

@Jeff - oh, we both did ;p

don't we have markdown in chat?

which "code" button?

@RameshSoni click the "help" link at bottom right

8:46 AM
yes we do

the one you cant see

              _ _

@scott we've kind of said that we aren't doing anything corporate or really anything where people pay us other than careers and jobs

8:47 AM
aha!

dasda

how do you do images?

You need achievements on this!

Is this custom, or leveraging something, @JeffAtwood?

Achievements for good behavior... on a chat?

8:47 AM
> Indented his first code-block in chat - 10GP

@scott it has to end in .gif or .png, even if the URL doesn't.. so you can trick it like example.com/wlewewe/?x=.png

:D

@ScottHanselman - Try a ! prefix..

@JonGalloway it's based on the munich battleship game

8:48 AM
@balpha I knew I'd seen it before!

doesn't work

Lovely transparent gif you just posted there, scott.
:)

@Scott I wonder if it checks the referrer

8:48 AM
works when I paste it

does this work in ie6? :-P

so what changed?

try with &x=.gif instead of ?

this is where webkit's lack of support for ESC to cancel gif animation makes me annoyed

Q: Gravatar icon in questions and answers in chat is not clickable

Juha SyrjäläGravatar icon in pasted questions and answers should be clickable. Currently it shows only the user name in tooltip. Also the tooltip could contain additional information like rep and badge counts.

@Jeff: aren't you worried people are going to be spending more time here than answering questions on SO? :p

@Scott I've just checked in our sandbox, and the original link (just prefixed !) worked fine...

@andy it's for a different axis of communication so I think it meets an untapped need

@Jeff, you commented about a 'mass invite button to do flood testing', I think your tweet did it :)

removed?

8:51 AM
ok, enough with animated .gifs :)

pwned

could we ban those animations somehow?

Right now I'd love to have an option to automatically disable images unless I click a button to show them :p

I'm in chrome, man, I'm defenseless against them.. esc does NOTHINK!

@Scott - yes, we got your "tst" message ;p

best-practices tag? eh?

if I can't use this to post animated gifs then I'm not sure I see the use! ;)

Tried to find the Strong Bad Broken JPEG, but no luck

wishful thinking more like! :)

8:52 AM
I want insert myself here too!

@scott you can but not in the chat feedback room.. create your own room, man!

New post - Create Printer Friendly Web Page Using Media Attribute -- http://is.gd/e3I11

rooms = topics, so have the "wacky crazy fun time gifs room" :)

wow this is cool

8:52 AM
oh noes

There's a user-script you can install for Chrome, haven't tried it though:
[Stop gif animations on ESC](http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/80588)

OK I can see now my work day will be ruined :)

/sigh

8:54 AM
Will this be the next twitter?

nooo

Something seems broken when posting a link, it shows correctly, then after a refresh it shows it as unformatted, url is clickable though

I didnt mean that I used is.gd

at some point we need to suppress the total # of users (by gravatar) in the room and display "32 more.."
2

ESC worked fine in Chrome now

8:54 AM
double standard! ;)

Okay - cool - my pity question on Meta was enough to earn me my 20 rep points to talk. I'm now armed and dangerous. meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/59728/…

Is there a good failwhale image? Better not be that Sean Connery pic.

I want a fail unicorn

Congrats, Jonas.

@JeffAtwood - I agree. Is there a limit of users in a given room?

8:55 AM
You can't fail with unicorns

Wonder what happens if dozens of people join at the same time.

I don't like the red href color

I really need that #sadtrombone sound for the chat alert. Until then this is #FAIL!

I don't like just online falling profiles

@LasseVKarlsen You're right. Unicorns are full of win and un-failable. We need something more epic for fail.

8:56 AM
how do I play Tradewars?

@ScottHanselman I dislike the color also

our proxy isn't blocking this chat, wonder how long it will take before it does.

@Scott @Juha the colour scheme is based on "meta.stackoverflow". That will be per-site, so on stackoverflow it'll be orange, etc.

I'm off to lunch - the kind of thing you won't tweet or post on Meta - but something I'm just dying to tell people on instant chat. Love it - that warm fuzzy #IRC feeling.

8:56 AM
the unicorns failed.

The fembots will soon figure out how to attain 20 rep quickly

meh, links are blue.

no they didnt

Adding load... 32x2

just a reminder, this is the CHAT FEEDBACK room, so if you want to talk about another topic, there is the rooms list.. and you can create your own rooms! chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/rooms

8:57 AM
It's starting to slow down on IE8

@JonGalloway Ooh. Fembots - IRC was all about bots. Eggdrop and shit. Imagine letting a fembot run loose on this. That would be interesting given how well this chat integrates videos/movies.

@Jeff: Will "off topic" rooms be closed?

I like how the new stuff animates

not on FF3.6 still pretty fast

Sam
@Jeff But this is where all the interesting people are!

8:58 AM
@andy everything is done via flagging, so if content in a room is getting flagged a lot, we would pull the room. and 10k rep users (parent rep) can help with flag handling.

Even though I left the C# room, it still says here that I'm in it.

@Sam - long time no see dude! Love your F# posts btw.

or did I not leave? I closed the tab.

@dave you haven't left until you click leave or time out over a fairly long period of time

8:58 AM
who are the faded people? just left?

@Dave - you didn't leave. In fact, you can still watch the message in the right pane

there, now I left.

@Scott - lurking

@chrissie1 it will be like autumn

8:58 AM
faded means you a) haven't talked and b) are closer to timing out. You're ghostly

ah, that's clever, the people boxes are stacked in "most recently chatted"
that's hot

Sam
@Jonas: Have you got the right Sam? I'm only on the fifth chapter of the F# book!

It's still fast for me, too. Also FF 3.6.8 & Win7 - but noticing a lot more of those "glitches" and screen flickers recently (especially with graphical content - ie. client rendered).

I like the batching also

So I can't stay in the room and just listen in? It'll time out?

8:59 AM
this use jquery?

@Dave - no, it won't time out unless you stop polling from every tab

i'm too scared to right click and do a view source! :(
