9:00 AM
@Scott - yes; quite a bit of it

just wondering will the chat room be usable if there are 100+ people in it?

@RameshSoni no chat room is usable with 100 talking people -- not an issue of tech

\o/

polling or comet?

@Ramesh, looks like we're getting closer to finding out :)

9:00 AM
interesting chatactivity json...

secretly logging in from work

polling, we were not able to find any other .. real .. web chatrooms that used anything BUT polling

@Sam I mixed up your blog - not you. You write the "Functional sam" blog - right? We meet at PDC08 if I remember correctly.

Ah, interesting - looking at the script references...

is there any limit on total number of people in a room?

9:00 AM
I think the lines of text could be closer to each other, stuff scrolls out of sight very quickly now

@Scott - polling at the moment; but we have the transport fairly divorced, so we can tweak that if we need

not secretly logging in from work

Wow this is nice

@Jeff, during my IRC time we used temp rooms for side discussions.

not quite so secretly logging in from work

Sam
9:01 AM

@Ilya - you can do that here; go create a room and have fun ;p

@IlyaRyzhenkov yes, exactly, we encourage people to splinter off into topic subrooms

so we get scott here online 24hrs to answer our questions ? :)

@Spoike @pavsaund this is my workplace <g>

master-chat.js includes plugins and stuff

9:02 AM
@Jon we merged in everything except the main jquery core, yes

@Jeff, so are there subrooms or siderooms? I mean, can I see what are subtopics of C# room?

Sam
@Jonas That's right. Shame I haven't been able to get out much to conferences since

Cool

just wanted to know how you guys are pushing updates to web page?

oh - hello everyone :)

9:03 AM
dammit
;)

@Ilya - no subrooms, although maybe that is an option

looking good

Any ladies want to chat in a subroom?

Someone needs to implement smiley replacements... :)

asl?

9:03 AM
Scott, did you remove that gif yourself or did someone else do it?

NO ASL!

@ilya click the "more rooms" link at top right

m 27 :)

ahha

Jeff is bigoted against AWESOME gifs

9:03 AM
Me and David go way back.

12 f taiwan.

An asp.net mvc room might be nice

Whoa, the sound notifications are annoying. Just turned the off.

@marc we should rewrite a/s/l or asl? into something .. amusing

/me reserves the right to add an auto-mute for anyone on asl

9:03 AM
Why remove them so quick? Let 'em soak in.

This is very cool. where can I buy this?! :D

like "I'm a little teapot, short and stout!"

I'M A 14 Y/O GIRL FROM RUSSIA. WANNA CHAT?!

@Jeff indeed ;p

@Jeff, yeah, I understand. May be it would make sense to invent real subrooms, i.e. chat rooms organized in a tree

9:04 AM
asl?

Sam
@urig - I wondered why the headphones on my desk were squeaking!

oops

definitely needs a /me

@Scott

age/sex/location ..

9:04 AM
@Sam see :)

never went on IRC?

lol -- check out the google results there

see asl is where you lie about who you are. :P

/topic ""

@Jeff Atwood is that at Spoike or at everybody?

9:04 AM
What, no cams? :p

lol; we've filled the room's avatar list on the lobby

"top" hits (and I use this term loosely), Yahoo answers.. Answerbag.. Wikianswers

http://chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/chats/transcripts/77?offset=60
that is a long page.

it's like a who's who of Q&A FAIL

Oh I'd love it if the message had a clickable 'star' next to it, instead of the popup menu.

9:05 AM
this is confusing

Dude, ASL has been sign language for 100 years...
;)

this is cool. bring back memories...

@dave that'd be very noisy, a clickable star on every message.

oh no.....first asl. next it'll be "wanna cyber????" :(

the Google link shortener is a little too agressive...
you should Hanselman into production and fix it

9:05 AM
The messages go by too fast for me to upvote or downvote them....

How many? 32x3 soon

you can upvote and downvote messages?!

When messages are deleted - it makes it really hard to work out the flow of conversation - i see something happened but nothing new to read

there is only starring, no upvote/downvote.

hello all

9:06 AM
aha

I want an animtated gif starred on the right side

Hmm, the chat doesn't seem to work optimally in Opera... any chance of fixing that, Jeff?

@Scott - Too agressive? What, like, too short?

look, the fire marshal is going to gome by. too many people in this room!

Oh wait... of course not, it's Opera :)

9:06 AM
google.com/... um, yes
show me the ?q= stuf

@Niels - can you define "doesn't seem to work optimally"?

onebox the search

PLEASE use the rooms menu to find a topic you like. This room is for chat feedback.. chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/rooms

@JeffAtwood - We're giving you feedback! We're your load testing team! :)

oh and you should introduce the "O"perator flag :)

9:07 AM
@Scott ideal to post spamlinks then ;)

seriously

I don't see a WebMatrix room :)

Jon
this is cool, love the way the gravatars animate around and stuff

@ScottHanselman never managed to get that silverlight bing maps control any where near performant

feedback: not sure what text under the other rooms you're in is? last chat?

9:07 AM
Needs a way to mark messages as "belongs on #general" :P

It's a little "jumpy" when I move my mouse, elements moving up and down a few pixels

Jon
and I suspect I'm going to spend WAY WAY WAY too much time here....

feedback: very jumpy
feedback: I lov eit

@Scott - yes; you can follow multiple rooms via the right

I created a VB.Net room.

9:08 AM
feedback: the avi's are too small

hashtagging could be cool - I like the way the gravatars move around when people enter/exit

can we send private messages?

Are there any /commands that I should know of?

feedback: the rss button is WAY too small

it was easy.
Perhaps too easy

9:08 AM
feedback: we need an API :P

wow just had a major timeout there

filtering of transcripts

feedback: I want it to be smart about the window size, if I resize it small, get ride of the right rail

@chrissie1, creating rooms is easy, getting anyone interested is not

@Daniel - there is "search"...

9:09 AM
didn't think "lag" would also be a feature

reminds me of IRC even more

@Jeff Atwood: add an option to turn off the annoying "another message" sound.

feedback: I want #hashtags and sub convos

In the page where I choose chat rooms it's confusing that when I click the middle of a room's box and hit someone's photo that I get to that person's profile rathe than to the room.

9:09 AM
@KristoferA the mute is in the upper right, the sound icon

@KristoferA - top right, looks like a speaker

Name that dancing banana!

@Jeff Atwood, cool, thanks, didn't see that :)

We need a re tweet
feature

You should explode ( jquery ui) the gravatar when people leave

9:10 AM
feedback: replies to existing chats, pin the original to the top, then add the replies under it. Don't just copy IRC, improve it. Threaded discussion.

I see we need a "no-animated-gifs" rule :)

IP
Is there no ASP.Net room?

@Jeff Atwood: is there a way to block/ignore individual users if someone gets annoying?

@scott you're talking to the #1 hates threads guy

@MarcGravell it might make sense to only show some of the most recent ie 30 entries

9:10 AM
@JeffAtwood dude, only YOU hate animated giffs. make it an option so you can have a 4chan room.

There should be exceptions

@urig - why? you clicked on a person? we're showing you the person...

@ScottHanselman sounds like wave for threaded discussion in that sense

@JeffAtwood Add bot-support, then you can make a bot that watches for images, downloads the image, and then deletes it if it is animated

This is a personal pet peeve

9:10 AM
@JeffAtwood Don't impose your prejudices

like I said, create another room, and go there, to fill it with animated gifs :)

Should splinter off to a Chat Feedback + Animated Gifs room

@Marc Gravell it make sense in retrospect but originally I though the whole box's onclick will just get me into the roomm.

IP
ha, I created one. This is very nice

Stand by for...

9:11 AM
@Daniel - not sure I follow

this is like a party where everyone hangs out in the kitchen all the time

Ok, back to work... chat looks promising!

Nothing But Animated Gis - Nothing But Animated Gis

Too noisy. have fun, 32x4

there are other rooms in the house :)

9:11 AM
@JeffAtwood @ScottHanselman Sounds more like "coversations" than "threads". Replies to a message become part of the same message

The way the messages jump up when a bunch of new ones comes in is confusing. What about a relaxed scroll up effect instead?

I see many good things here. The large array of faces sloshing around on the top right is distracting and I don't see how it's useful.

@MarcGravell having the whole transcript load when you access the page isn't great i don't think, perhaps showing the latest 100, then the ability to go further previous

@TobiasCohen Sure, as long as it's possible.

to ignore a user, click their gravatar, then click ignore

9:12 AM
feedback: we could use a boss-button which shows some nice graphs so it looks like we're actually working

@JeffAtwood - Are there any other types of party?

but seriously, this is a very cool app

/join c#

the ignore & hide posts, does that get pushed back to the transcript?

/boss

9:12 AM
@DanielMay - ah right; currently it is per day; I'll think about that

Ah yes ignoring Hanselman makes it this much better ;-)

@thijs: alt+tab

Lame, no SVG support

Nice feature

Nothing But Animated Gis - Nothing But Animated Gis

9:13 AM
Any PM support?

A bit jumpy, but nice

just the transcript for this room is already huge: chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/chats/transcripts/77?offset=60

kudoz for the transcript!! - now it looks even more usable than i initially thought

Animated Gi's? Like the martial arts suit, or the soldiers?

Definitely needs a limit on the gravatar panel, the starred messages are getting pushed too far down on my 1600x900 screen

9:13 AM
C# - General discussion about all things C#

@JonGalloway - perhaps we don't handle that extension; but prefixing with ! makes it more aggressive about images
@dfowler - no ;p

Sandbox - Playing around with formatting
General - General Chat

Cool

Jon
@JonGalloway stop posting that, I listen already!

Heck gaming is the only hardcore chat room @JeffAtwood

9:15 AM
yes, Jon made me gag him. But it's ok, we're friends. this is like that scene in Pulp Fiction with The Gimp

Why are some of the users grayed out on the left?
Inactivity?

Marc / Jeff - How long do user created rooms last? Is it like IRC where it disappears (lights go out) as the last person leaves? Or does it just hang around?

Wow, chatrooms. Haven't been in one of these in a few years.

inactive

@urig: yes
hi @waff

9:15 AM
getting google wave flashbacks in here ;)

howdy

Lol; @Jeff isn't kidding; he gagged @JonGalloway ;p

Why on earth am I bouncing up and down?

@CraigTP - it'll stay around. We'll probably add some archiving of inactive rooms that makes them read-only (and perhaps moved out of the DB)

9:16 AM
Am I the only one who just didn't get wave?

@urig - see the FAQ
@PhilWheeler it would seem you were in the majority

Wave was before it's time. And badly marketed. And I didn't get it. Being "neato" isn't guaranteed to sell an idea.

@PhilWheeler You and everyone else apparently

I really didn't feel upset at not having ever received an invite.

I use wave for storing notes.

Jon
9:17 AM
@PhilWheeler I never even looked at it

@MarcGravell - Thanks.. I think that could do with going in the FAQ when you decide on a convenient policy of archiving etc.

Not unlike my high-school formal (that's a prom, if you're american), actually.

Sam
@Jeff: Can you put a time limiter on this thing? I need to get some work done!

I already have a favourite room: chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/rooms/103/russia

@Marc feature request , select a bunch of messages and send them to another room

9:17 AM
@Jeff, @Marc, maybe you should change the tagline of this room to "Go play in the sandbox first and then come back here and tell us what you think, and if the answer to your question is in the FAQ, you will be banned for 30mins" ;)

Err... Where is the FAQ?

help lower right

faq link is at the bottom right

@urig details on finding the FAQ are in the FAQ ;)

@Benjol like that?

9:18 AM
Is this jabber based then?

Taking out beer bottle glasses. Finding FAQ link. clicking.

@DC01 - no

@Marc :) haha. oh

We could play a drinking game based on how many times @JeffAtwood has to tell someone where a link is on the page.

Unable to find the "Why is my avatar bouncing up and down as if bursting with joy". But I did find my answer.
@Nick Josevski LOL

9:20 AM
Interesing. My avatar is not DC01 any more. Trying a cache reset

The 'person entering the room' animation is a bit too slow, to my taste.
like a bad PowerPoint presentation

Oh dear. Yet another meeting. See you guys. Very impressive @Jeff !

@DaveVandenEynde As opposed to what other kind of PowerPoint presentation?

@DC01 - try this first - it is cached for an hour

it's all @marc and @balpha they did all the work

9:21 AM
But @Jeff did supply the youtube distractions...

Crikey, as if Stack Overflow didn't already distract me from my work, now there's a real-time chat room...

the animation is a bit choppy, could be my office pc not being very good at grahics

Very nice chaps! I'd love to hear about the implementation.

this is very nice.

So when will emoticons be implemented? :)

9:22 AM
Testing 123

ack the changing coloured text tricks my eyes in into reading the linea gain

Ahh, that's better. Thanks @Marc

*again

Who needs emoticons if you have the full ASCII set?

Liking the username autocomplete

9:23 AM
Because this is too hard to use ☺

@je

this is nice :)

feedback: when I create chat room from a question, it looks like the question asker has posted the first message. See for example: chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/59728/… . It looks like Jonas posted the question link, when in fact I posted it.

I made the /faq part of the room topic

☺

9:23 AM
also, up arrow lets you edit (this is also in the /faq..)

@Jeff yeah didn't read it until now

Great idea having starred message!

@JuhaSyrjälä - well, it is their question...

user name auto complete - if I hit enter in the middle it posts my message instead of auto completing username

status-bydesign

9:24 AM
why are some avatars alpha-shaded? chat open but browser doesn't have focus? or smt else?

@RameshSoni it is tab-complete, but we could tweak that I guess

@KristoferA they're just inactive for a while

@JuhaSyrjälä I am not sure I see what the problem is... Posting the question gives context for the subsequent chat

@jef
Why does the username not auto complete properly when I press enter?

Suggestion: how about @@username to send a private message?

9:25 AM
it auto-completes on Tab

@chrisntr: use tab

@ScottHanselman sorry about leaving your room. I need the CPU to do this build.

@RameshSoni - PM is intentionally not a feature.

@Ramesh: private messages have already been declined as a feature request.

Do I have to press tab to "select" one?

9:26 AM
That would make it completely uncontrollable

We don't want private messages because they are hidden and bad things can happen in dark places

You can always "get a room"

@chrisntr: yes

@MarcGravell @DC01 I think it would be obvious that my name should be one that posted the link. Compare when you just post a link normally.

make sense

9:27 AM
@LasseVKarlsen fair enough

Oh no

@KristoferA - note that we do cap the length. You don't have to try to defeat it, though

@JeffAtwood is the ascii thing above appropriate to flag as spam?

I think it should be flagged as awesome, but it belongs in the chilaxing room

9:28 AM
@JeffAtwood I use a screenreader so stuff like that is a peeve of mine

oh, and the input textbox font lacks many unicode sets... illegal alien languages appear as boxes when typing...

@RameshSoni Or !@username for private. I can see @@ being an occasional typo accident

@alxp - ooh oooh! In that case, I would really love to hear any and all feedback

uh. someone deleted my question?

@MarcGravell Do you have a post up yet on the tech behind chat.meta?

9:29 AM
@KristoferA it was interfering with @alxp 's screen reader

I would love if I could pick a different color for links than red though

I am dancing on the right.. lol

@Marc, are there direct messages in chat?

@MarcGravell I mostly use OS X's built in screen-reader, just to select a bunch of text and have it read aloud, don't use voiceover or any other full-on system

feedback: the order of "Other rooms you're in" jumps around which makes me miss-click

9:30 AM
@lasse this is based on meta's color scheme. other chat.example.com sites will inherit colors from their parent site

seeing as I'm color blind, red text and black text at these sizes doesn't stand too much out for me
so it's kinda hard to spot the links

@marcg

@ilya:
in Chat feedback, 2010-08-05, by Jeff Atwood
We don't want private messages because they are hidden and bad things can happen in dark places

ok. sorry about that @alxp

@MarcGravell Which seems to work quite well, I like that there isn't a lot of extra text 'noise' accompanying the messages

9:30 AM
wonder if there's a user-script I could install that could help me override the colors

I don't think chat is going to get my questions answered more quickly

@Marc, well, but can I create private room? invite-only or something?

Nothing But Animated Gifs - Nothing But Animated Gifs

@ilya this is covered in the /faq

@Ilya - you can make your own room invite to talk, but (intentionally) anyone can come in and see if you're being malign

9:32 AM
ok, thanks

@marc I think you see why I was so adamant that we had to improve the /faq a lot before public beta :)

OK gotta go, or my boss will kill me.

makes sense
The requirement should be to have 20+ rep, AND read the FAQ :)

@LasseVKarlsen should be able to override the style of elements with a user style (e.g. Stylish extension in FF)

ah, our own little meme

9:34 AM
Great call on the private messages decision @JeffAtwood

we like to think that we've done our Clay Shirky homework when we build sites :)

I remember IRC and the endless "Ask in the channel" replies :P

@Marc, @Jeff, what if I want to send some person private information to get something off the chat? E.g. email.

I'd like a search, filter

Post your IM in your profile or whatnot perhaps?

9:35 AM
@ilya, you send the message, then remove it real quick :)

so I could follow what's going on

@scott what kind of search

in Chat feedback, 2010-08-05, by David Christiansen
Great call on the private messages decision @JeffAtwood

and I had to work TOO HARD to even reference that permalink
and it didn't onebox
it was like three clicks to refernce it

9:36 AM
it does if you have it on the line by itself

doesn't onebox links have to be posted by themselves?

and I have no idea what it was in refefrence to

@JeffAtwood On the "line" or by themselves?, that is, can I just hit Shift+Enter and add the link or do I need to post it separately?

this one
in Chat feedback, 2010-08-05, by David Christiansen
Great call on the private messages decision @JeffAtwood

the transcript could link previous mentions

9:37 AM
too hard

where would the permalink go? on every chat message?

@Lasse - by themselves, usually

can I delete a room created by me?

that'd be very, very noisy

or are they automagically deleted somehow

9:38 AM
I want to reply to a message, by clicking reply, like twitter

room deletions can only be done by mods atm, but it is possible

"I want to reply to a message, by clicking reply," <= you mean to build google wave like conversations? :)

Wow - cool.

maybe one of the message actions could be 'reply' and it could LMGTFY the @reply text into your message box in a slow and obvious way

this thing does remind of google wave somehow... :)

9:39 AM
It may also be helpful if my messages where clearer @ScottHanselman. :P

we don't really have a concept of reply-to-message, only reply-to-person.

Isn't there potential for star abuse? Me going and hitting stars on all posts - just to flood the RSS feed and the sidebar.

This isn't a throw back to 1998's chathouse.com, is it? ;-)

@Jeff I think it makes sense to allow the creator of a room to delete it as well...? (at least if it has only been visited/used by the creator...)

@AdhipGupta I am pretty sure starring is rate limited, but that's a good point; we should cap per day or per room

9:40 AM
@JeffAtwood Totally get that, an what I'm saying is that twitter is missing the boat by not making "show me replies to this message"

Loving the new stackexchange.com look

@Adhip - originally you had a cap on stars, but @Jeff made me take it out. We do need some better "undo what this person did"

you have an oppty here to go BEYOND IRC.
And into Compuserve, instead!

@scott that's a good point, we'll put that on the list

Very impressed.. like the idea of order sorting based on latest login or who has just messaged

9:40 AM
Don't Kin me, Bro!

@KristoferA +1. If there has been no public interaction with the channel, then the author should be able to delete it.
...in my opinion (sorry)

I think a cap per time will be good - you can just do x stars in one hour...

@JeffAtwood Suggestion: differenet pivots for different folks...let me decide how to pivot my chat

Or at least flag it for deletion by a moderator

@MarcGravell is there an 'oh crap I meant star not flag' way to undo a message actioni?
action

9:41 AM
yeah. what does it mean when my avatar starts bouncing? "time to go to the bathroom"?

You really should not have to star more than 15-20 messages in an hour.

redo it; it should say "unflag"

nice

@KristoferA Yes, when your webcam notices your eyes start turning yellow, it bounces to tell you that

@KristoferA - it means it is time to read the FAQ ;p

9:42 AM
@Marc how come it knew I haven't read the FAQ? :)

the avatars that don't show people are useless
I like that you make the avatar larger for multiple line messages, but the small one is REALLY small.

what, you don't like graphical hashes of email / IP ?

Don Park does, I don't.

It's like we're all playing a big game of adventure on the atari with the pixel icons as monsters among us

@Scott - you can at least (at a glance) see "another message from pink"

9:44 AM
ah, thank God that User 133483 is here. I totally recognize that pink fractal bastard!

ReSharper - Productivity is the key to success, ReSharper is the key to productivity.

Shameless plug

any resharper users, I think there is a resharper team member in there

@Scott @Jeff Atwood at least the SO algorithm for auto-generated avatars don't generate swastika-like symbols like the one on social.msdn.microsoft.com :)

9:46 AM
@KristoferA does SO has any algo to auto generate avatar? I guess its gravatar..

@KristoferA Of course the Swastika is an ancient Indian symbol, but if you can give me an example on MSDN I'll have the algo fixed.

The GUI is a bit "busy" while hovering over with one's mouse. Maybe implement something like hoverintent

@Scott just checked, looks like they have updated it to be less swastika-like. :) ...so change that to it used to...

@KristoferA @Scott is fixing those in background

9:48 AM
@Ramesh @Scott typing with his toes on keyboard #3 and #4?

Can we call this chatoverflow?

Out of interest, how lightweight/heavy is this in terms of server load? What if 10,000 users create their own room? Presumably just creating a room hardly any resources...

can't remember the last time I looked at the user comments on MSDN

ah well, this was fun. now I need to go and finish the next generation of my EFv4 model comparer... back later when today's milestones are checked in...

well, I'm exhausted. headed to bed. any chat feedback, leave it here, if you think it's useful, star it .. oh and READ THE FAQ :) chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/faq

9:49 AM
@Furis +1 for ChatOverflow

Congrats!

thanks for stopping by @ScottHanselman I will definitely put reply-to and reply-to-view on our list.

yay!
Snooches!

caveat: it still wouldn't be part of the MAIN view, but it'd be no more than 1 or 2 clicks away.
I understand the usefulness, because you're right about twitter needing to do that

one q
how long did this take?

and thanks to EVERYONE for stopping by, while I'm at it. THis is still beta but we will keep making it better with your feedback.

See you @Jeff

Good stuff @Jeff :)

very impressive @Jeff

9:52 AM
Thanks to you @JeffAtwood and team

nice setting for sounds notifications... it... just works... :)

I use the "when mentioned" mostly

Very nicely done @JeffAtwood + team

great work (except falling/dancing profiles in right)

yes but the moment i thought 'they need some sound settings!' i realised its already there
and it has good defaults and good pick of options

9:54 AM
What's the max load (user count) you've had through the chat system then ? @MarcGravell
