Feedback: When a starred message is too long for the starred list, it has a link to the full message in plain text - including no carriage returns or anything. (e.g. chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/message/39216?plain=true) Is there a way to pretty that up a bit? Maybe have it expand in place with the full message or something?
Or maybe it sends you to that section of the transcript (which would provide context, as a bonus), similar to the quote function?

Feedback: The chat looks great, nice and clean. Makes good use of browser space, even with maximized browser on a 30" screen. I am an Opera user, and when hovering over message rows, when the dotted bounding box appears, the contents of the page jitter up and down. The odd thing about it is that the neighboring rows jitter and "collapse" downwards, rather than the hovered row growing. Its a little disconcerting. Other than that, things seem pretty smooth.

ok; will look on Opera

Morning Mark, I've been wondering about how you expect chat to interact with [site] once the links to chat exist next to questions. How do users communicate the fact that they want to 'take this discussion to chat'? Via comments? And will the chat link indicate whether someone has already created a room or not? And if someone is still in it?

I would expect it to indicate that a room exists. Not sure if real-time people count will happen, though. And yes, I can imagine comments playing a part.

5:32 AM
Just it doesn't seem to have happened much yet, I was wondering if it was a usability/discoverability thing, or if people are still in 'play' mode.

At the moment, only regulars on meta even know about the site...

I guess so, or blog readers... Maybe I should ask a highly controversial question on meta and suggest chatting to resolve it. Though if it's highly controversial, it will probably just get squashed. And everyone's asleep now anyway.
Alternatively, I could just do some work :)

lol why would you want to do that?
I must say this a very interesting approach to chat. I was wondering how it would be rendered and feared it would simply be a knockoff of typical desktop chat software.

5:48 AM
@GeorgeMarian, my boss is fairly tolerant, but I do actually have other stuff to do from time to time :)

blog post is up, so we should have more new friends! blog.stackoverflow.com/2010/08/chat-now-in-public-beta

I'm liking this chat too, now interested to see how it works out as a site discussion tool

ok; will try not to break it ;p

hi @dmo -- rocky's boots!
Rocky's Boots is an educational logic puzzle game by Warren Robinett and Leslie Grimm, published by The Learning Company in 1982. It was released for the Apple II, the CoCo, the Commodore 64 and the IBM PC. It was followed by a more difficult sequel, Robot Odyssey. It won Software of the Year awards from Learning Magazine (1983), Parent's Choice magazine (1983), and Infoworld magazine (1982, runner-up), and received the Gold Award (for selling 100,000 copies) from the Software Publishers Association. It was one of the first educational software products for personal computers to success...

@benjol Good to hear. Closedminded bosses are horrible.

@George, that's my immediate boss, mind you ;) But his open mindedness does depend on me actually getting the job done.

@Benjol lol fair enough
speaking of old video games, anyone remember King Tut's Tomb on the commodore? I think that was the name. It was a maze/puzzle game. The only game my father liked. :)

@JeffAtwood, what's your name for the 'magic' links that get special treatment?

5:57 AM
it's just oneboxing -- that's a search engine term

"magic" seems to cover it ;p

That's it, onebox. I must admit magic does it for me too ;)

oneboxing? please explain

@GeorgeMarian, try pasting a wikipedia link on it's own

Now that the ability to chat about a question is active, is there going to be any sort of indication on the question itself that there's people in the chat room about the question?

Q: What links and sites are handled specially in chat?

Juha SyrjäläThere is special linking to some sites in chat. What is the full list of supported and integrated sites?

voila

Friendfeed, Twitter, and Facebook re-trained me to look for new content at the top of my screen. This format is causing expectation/reality collisions.

very cool

@Jeff, nice link for oneboxing, thanks.

Lilliput and Blefuscu are two fictional island nations that appear in the first part of the 1726 novel Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift. The two islands are neighbors in the South Indian Ocean, separated by a channel eight hundred yards wide. Both are inhabited by tiny people who are "not six inches high", i.e., about one-twelfth the height of ordinary human beings. Both kingdoms are empires, i.e. realms ruled by a self-styled emperor. The capital of Lilliput is Mildendo. History and politics Lilliput and Blefuscu were intended as, and understood to be, satirical portraits of the k...

Is there a way to scroll/page in the chat while focused in the text box?

> The novel further describes an intra-Lilliputian quarrel which involved a quarrel over the practice of breaking eggs. Formerly, in Lilliput, all eggs were broken on the larger end; but a few generations in the past, an Emperor of Lilliput had decreed that all eggs be broken on the smaller end. The differences between Big-Endians (those who broke their eggs at the larger end) and Little-Endians had given rise to "six rebellions... wherein one Emperor lost his life, and another his crown".

@dmo, I use the mouse wheel

press shift-tab, then shift-space
shift-space, scroll up, space, scroll down, hit tab to come back
this is all built in browser stuff though

@jeff Ah, that brings back memories of watching a public domain cartoon version of the story as a child.

I think we need a chat-nostalgia

status-nostalgia

Starred messages in sidebar are not click-able...

6:10 AM
you can add stars to starred messages by clicking the star

hyperlinks that is...

@greg yeah, we need to allow hyperlinks (and mini-markdown) on starred sidebar messages

Otherwise looks like this is coming along quite well!
It will be interesting to see if people start using it for side-conversations on active questions...

I'm curious to see how crazy it'll be with some real activity.

still polling huh?
did you guys look into any comet stuff?

6:14 AM
@john are you aware of any other major chat webapps that don't poll? we couldn't find any
feel free to share links of other public web chat apps that do not poll.
(tech demos don't count..)

I still think that it would be helpful to have an "X people are viewing this question" message on the Q&A sites to help drive some of the back and forth comments to a chat room. Kind of feels like this would work better than all the @ comments that get piled up when a question is being refined...

The only thing I've ever seen which uses comet (I believe) is twitterfall, but that's not chat. It's not a demo though, either)

just because everyone does it doesn't mean it's the best way...i like your chat implementation...it's slick so don't think i'm knocking it
i think you could do it without polling, but not with ASP.NET since it sucks for comet

@GregBray, I believe that's the intention ultimately: chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/chats/message/44048?offset=121

6:18 AM
jeff i'd love to talk to you more about it on skype or email....jarrod knows where to find me. give me 5 minutes :)

leafychat.com webbased irc using comet afaik.

I hope so... I already added it as a feature request during the Initial beta:

Q: Add current people count to Chat links

Greg BrayI like the new chat system, but I am not the kind of person that will sit around in a chat room all day. If I find an interesting question I might join the chat room for it, and I really like the userscript that adds a chat link to the questions on meta. If I click on that link though the majorit...

@greg I don't think that's a good idea; ad-hoc discussion of a single question has no "legs". We envision more topic areas like Java, Python, 10k users, moderators, People Who Love Evan Carroll, etc

So a room for "C#" is OK then?

6:20 AM
sure

You don't see people flocking to such rooms for "live support" instead of asking on SO then?

so we can cement the "them and us" ;p

@Jeff, so the 'chat link next to each question' is still up in the air?

(sorry if this has been brought up earlier)

@marc -- the html is not using the google source for jquery at the moment, view source to confirm -- so that code path is busted somehow

6:21 AM
I'm working on it
basically, the tier was hard-coded; currently unsticking it, but it is tripping some type initializer goo

@lasse they can but remember they need 20 reputation to talk in the room

Good point

@jeff I see where you are coming from... I just also see potential for "micro-discussions" too. The chat is really slick and would help clean up some of the comment clutter. I could always just add a "Waiting in chat room for more discussion..." comment whenever I create a new question, but having an automated indicator would be much smoother.

Morning from South Africa

This is very nice. I do like the interactiveness of the chat. Also, I think this will be blocked on many work firewalls soon enough :p

6:24 AM
why is the whole message highlighted on hover, but the click target for actions is only the arrow in the left margin?
it feels weird...when something comes up on hover, i expect to be able to click on it

that'd be hella annoying when I want to copy text

Any word on the tech behind this chat? Developed by Stackoverflow? Uses XMPP?

@JohnSheehan copy text annoying?
Ok, I now hate chat. @JeffAtwood beat me in replying.

we are considering the idea of special "invites" you can give to 1 rep users so they can chat here. Like, if they need help.

@JeffAtwood yeah I agree...considered removing the hover?
i was trying to say there's a hover state with no associated action at the point of hover.....you can either add the action (bad for copying text) or remove the hover state
or leave it :)

6:27 AM
Actually, I like the hover, it doesn't clutter the interface with message delimiters but clearly shows what is a single posted message when you hover it

Is Markdown enabled in chat? How about code snippet formatting, etc?

I think Jeff is right, it's probably easier to have primary-tag based chat, where you've got more chance of people 'lurking', so you'd refer to the question from within chat, rather than referring to chat from the question

Without it it looks like the "or leave it :)" you posted at the end was posted with the rest of the text.

otto click the help link at bottom right

@Otto mini-markdown
"help" works too ;p (after Jeff's reply)

Q: Please move the chat post controls to the right side of each post

Jared HarleyPer @Maxim Z's request, I am making my suggestion from the Gravatar bugs and improvements in chat into a full-blown feature request: I'm not quite sure why, but I think the chat controls would feel more natural on the right, rather than the left. My idea, as seen below, would be to move the ar...

Reading the help file (scoffs) What's the world coming to

Very Campfire like...

I need to do a simplified graphic for the help... with all the visual elements labelled.
I can' handle another "what is the dotted lines?" conversation without going postal.

@marc can you make Zoredash an owner in the Server Fault room
I can't tell how to make someone owner.. maybe I don't have that priv

Server Fault - General discussion relating Server Fault.

I was about to ask... there are 2 (3 if you count deleted)

I think the dotted line is lying to me.

ahh @marc I need to add "how do I mute someone?" to the /faq

I blame your low-res web-cam. Without a high-res image we can't track your eye movements as accurately, so it might be off by a line.
will do (@Jeff)

@marc is there any way to go to the context of a starred message? in the chat transcript?

6:34 AM
More options > permalink

@marc let's change that wrench to the down arrow like the standard chat messages

will do

Was musing about needing an API so this can interface with IM clients - thinking though that it's a close match in a lot of ways to IRC...

Here's a question... Can a room be tied to a tag or group of tags?
I guess you probably could using the add feeds option...

@greg right, just make the room topic appropriate and add feeds
warning: feeds have a way of dominating the room which can be irritating in practice
you can mute the feed users though by clicking on them and selecting the menu option
@marc do you think the "1d ago" part of the starred messages should be a permalink? I think so

6:38 AM
Hmm, another way for stackoverflow to kill my productivity

That is the ultimate goal of Stack Overflow
To kill all productivity

@Jeff I had assumed it was; I actually got confused that it wasn't

It's a way to bring world peace

> It has been pointed out to me that Stack Overflow is powered by bored programmers, so it is in our best interest for programmers to be bored at work.

6:39 AM
Are the sound notification options currently non-functioning?

@Jeff, very rtue

@john flashblock will interfere, but otherwise they work

Hm..no flashblock here. But can't change the options
Says "None (current setting)" and still getting them

@jeff Just thinking... if the room could be tied closer to a tag or group of tags, you could then display a list of relevant chat rooms in a "you might want to check out ..." box after users post new questions.

it's really not a goal to drive people to chat. those who need it, will find it, or be told about it

6:41 AM
Good to know... guess I am trying to solve problems that don't exist or don't need to be solved :-P

I have just created something totally illogical

Alright, time to get ready for bed. Looking forward to kicking the tires some more tomorrow. G'night folks.

Q: Will there be an "invitation per SO question" feature for the chat?

VonCMost of the users I answer questions to are fairly new to the system. That means they have a low reputation (often lower than 15) on SO. You can guess their reputation on MSO... They usually don't know Meta. Yet, they are the ones who would most benefit from a quick chat to clarify their questi...

I think that's a dupe

Is it the chat-system that creates those beepbeep noises on messages?
Didn't notice them before I put on my headphones

6:49 AM
Up in the top right is a control for it.

Is there a way to turn them off?
ah, thanks

I feel a bit confused by the list of starred messages on the right. I don't see how they'll generally be useful out of the context of the general conversation.

@smashe they are a collaborative summary, for people who don't have time to read 5,000 lines of chat log
this is sort of documented in the chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/faq
> Star any message in the room that you feel is particularly interesting, or worthy of summarizing. Each message can be starred by anyone in the room; the more stars, the more interesting the message to that room. These starred messages appear in the room sidebar, ordered by number of stars and last time of starring. This is intended to be a collaboratively created mini-timeline of interesting room events for people who don't have time to read the entire chat log in that particular room.

..which we've all read twice, of course ;)

@vonc I stand corrected, that request isn't a dupe! I'll upvote it..

6:55 AM
@Jeff, for me it wasn't clear that the 20 rep limit was on the meta of a site, not on the main site.
as suggested by VonC's question. Is that the case?

@Jeff: thank you! Upvoted and status planned!!

@JeffAtwood (Just trying to work out the suggested way of using stars) So should starring only be done to messages that make sense out of context of the rest, or the start of a topic of conversation, or...
For instance, it seems that it wouldn't make sense to star quippy comebacks.

@vonc we've been talking about "new user chat invites" internally for a while so I thought it was out there.. sorry about that
@smashery it's no less crazy than starring twitter messages
hi @vincent

hi :)
just having a quick look to the new chat system before leaving for work
Looks nice
Congratulations guys

thanks it is all Ben and Marc

Just discovered Chat. Looks like IRC might have been if it had evolved

Off-topic: Does anyone know of any good Regular Expression search tool outside of an IDE that can handle folders + sub-folders and most importantly, unicode?
... for Windows

so you want grep ?

in a window, yes
visual grep or whatnot

oh, PowerGrep all the way.. powergrep.com

I'll make a note of it, 119 euro was a bit steep for my current budget

7:04 AM
@Jeff: I understand. My proposal is not for a "general" invitation where the "invited user" would access all the rooms though. It is a more specific kind of invitation.

Hello from Australia.

Greetings fellow Australian!

Hi Smashery how are you doing today mate!

Well, thanks!
And yourself?

7:08 AM
our Australian (waffles) is hard at work making tag merging better

Doing great, been busy, just got back from the gym.
Got a question for Jeff
@Jeff, is there any plans with stackoverflow in the future to have a private closed stackexchange for bussiness customers who have clients they wish to answer questions from?

status-debugging-ancient-legacy-code-in-Vb6
Hello

Q: I am interested in creating a private, internal Stack Exchange inside my organization.
A: We no longer offer such a product.

@JeffAtwood Yes, I was glad to see an Australian on the SE team, despite our tendency to ask many spam questions on a Friday evening. Heartening to see that you could forgive our nation :-)

@Jeff Thanks for the link. Though I would have to say there has been 3-4 clients who've loved the Idea of stackoverflow and were willing to pay for the service.

7:13 AM
@chad corporate clients are too far on the "crazy" part of this graph.

@Jeff Thank you for the feedback

but seriously it's really just a very, very different business than public internet stuff

@Jeff I agree, and I would assume right now your prioritys are more inlined with achieving the largest critical mass possible.

@JeffAtwood - I know it's somewhat off-topic in this room, but what the heck. I think you guys are doing a fantastic job with the whole StackExchange 2.0 thing; really hoping it takes off.

well, the goal is just to create the kind of pages we ENJOY landing on, instead of groaning.. like I do when I click on half my google search results

there's a plugin to fix that, @marc
I'm sure

What's the purpose of those [status-whats-this-about] thingies?

just an easter egg, currently

@Jeff any plans to restart the podcasts anymore? It has seem to have died out. Really enjoyed the drinking game listening to your and Joel

@chad Joel doesn't want to do them any more. full stop.

7:21 AM
@Jeff Thanks, i was allways looking forward to the last one
@Jeff any chance you guys can do a good bye one? Just to close the show off. Even if its just yourself and stackoverflow team?

Will there be event-support in this chat-system?
For instance, I could easily see a "Guru Night" type of chat-room one friday night where you announce that "This friday, on Chat, come visit all your superstars for an informal chat"

sure, why not? what special support would be needed?
which reminds me, we should have an "invite tons of people to a room" load test like that

Don't know to be honest :) It was just a random thought, not sure what you'd need. An event calendar?
Perhaps the ability to lock rooms off when they're not in use for events? So that transcripts doesn't get cluttered with random chatter long after the event closed

@lasse that's a good idea, let's schedule that for about 2 weeks from now when things have stabilized more

You might also add a moderator type of room for that
so that when I post a question, it gets put into a queue, which a moderator streams into the room one at a time
then you could host Q&A sessions with those same superstars
I mean, you were planning on co-opting the entire chat industry with this thing, right? :)

7:27 AM
Will these chat rooms be included in the Creative Commons Data Dump?

no no no please no ...

@Jeff - that is a scenario we have designed for, of course.

this would be of so low value as a creative commons dump ... not worth the effort

I ask because I am interested in how long the text that I send in the chat rooms will stay around
I do not think it would be a good idea to included in the dump

Well its meant to be a transient thing ... not sure, ask @Marc

7:32 AM
@Lasse - actually, there is a "lock" feature - makes it readonly
there just isn't a UI for that ;p

or how far back will the transcript go? Days or weeks?

A question, i'm using this chat@work (shame on me :) ).. what about the generated traffic of this chat? Is it intensive?

I didn't think that I'll see the day that SO will have a "chat" feature I'm wondering if "friends" is the next thing on the list ;)

@joe I don't think that's been fully established yet. However, all chats are public by default, because we believe in the healing power of "let everyone see what is happening". Mold only festers in dark corners.

7:33 AM
@systempuntoout the main part is actually the http headers

@systempuntoout we hope not too intensive. We're open to feedback - for example, would a "slower poll" option be genuinely useful?

@dror VAMPIRE ZOMBIE POKE!!

one request every 2-15 seconds, depending on room activity

let me start firebug and see..

per the faq all chats are licensed under cc-by-sa like everything else

7:34 AM
couple-o-meg a second; that's fine, yes?

wow..

@JeffAtwood I'll throw a sheep on ya!

in Chat feedback, 2010-08-05, by systempuntoout
wow..
is that good or bad?

@Marc uhm..i don't have a benchmark..from what i see it's relatively high.
got to check gmail (that is always opened @work)..never checked its traffic

which reminds me; must check server activity ;p

7:40 AM
Would be nice if links (from permalinks in the starred section at the right) and replies like yours above, @Marc, showed the actual post on screen when the page loads.

not too much traffic

(Rather than having to scroll to find it)

they *should*; let me check; maybe I lost something subtle when I merged the scripts
(it used to be highlit? highlighted?)

Yeah, it's highlighted - but I have to scroll down to find it.

Uncaught ReferenceError: initTranscript is not defined oops!

7:41 AM
it is highlighted, in yellow color, but way way down on the page

yeah; it is the scroll that isn't happening
and the option to vote in the transcript

ah, so deleting messages doesn't actually remove them from the chat transcript?
so there's no point in me editing multiple minor posts into one

it should; are they appearing?
sigh
regression - nope; just blame @Lasse for being vague ;p

well
I see a light gray (removed)
perhaps you don't see them?
if you refresh the page, after the "it is highlighted, in yellow color" message of mine, are there two "(removed)" messages visible for you?

In the sidebar, when I click the link "show 19 more", it changes to "only show top 6" for a sec and then to "only show top 1". When I click "only show top 1", it briefly changes to "show 24 more" before going back to "show 19 more"

7:44 AM
ah; by "transcript", do you actually mean the transcript, or do you mean here?

sorry, I mean here :P

They don't show in the transcript, but they remain here
phew!
you had me worried

:-P

sorry, no, you're right, in the transcript they're gone
how far back can you edit a message?

I'll confess to feeling a little overwhelmed when I look at the bottom right of the screen; seeing 3 scroll bars in close proximity feels a little weird to me.

7:45 AM
we show that something was removed in the chat, yes
2 minutes

3 scrollbars? I only have 1 on my screen, Google Chrome

I need to fix some alignment on the "starred" one...
build server is whirring; transcript will scroll etc in a few moments ;p

What do you think of just showing however many starred messages fit on screen without a scroll bar, rather than the top 10 (still with the option of showing more, in which case, you'd need the scroll bar)
Just with all the data on the right (users, other rooms, starred messages), I do feel a bit overwhelmed.

I think that is the idea; we changed the layout there yesterday, and I simply haven't had time to tidy it up fully

cool.

7:48 AM
@JoeMako These numbers are updated dynamically depending on the amount of space, which is not really known until you change them

but maybe we could just drop the actual numbers to avoid confusion

@Marc You've done a great job with this, man. Really liking the potential for chatting about SE questions and stuff.

@balpha too

@balpha I see, and yes simply, "show more" or "show less" could be better

7:50 AM
@Smashery - is that fixed now ? (transcript)

the numbers above the starred things is a bit confused when I click on the show more anyway, now it says "show top 2"

@Marc - indeed it is

if I click on it, it shows 5

I like the numbers, but that is a good point about too many scrollbars
why do we have a HORIZONTAL scrollbar on the starred area?

link too long, I guess.

7:51 AM
@LasseVKarlsen that's what @JoeMako and I were just talking about

there, screw that link, I removed the stars from it
whatever it was, it's gone

probably overflow of a url

Ah, much nicer.

yeah we should set overflow on that somehow

7:52 AM
@balpha, it is really cool how the number updates as I resize the window

as long as the area is FIXED SIZE, this is possible.. there's some advanced css

Q: Post Overflow

ahsteeleIn replying to Text Alignment Problem on SO, hyperslug wondered what would happen if a non-breaking character string was added to a post. What he discovered is that unlike a code block which wraps things up with scrollbars the non-breaking string overflows the post element div. A modification to ...
