Awesome post! Great source of info and a good place to send people who are looking for help setting up a wireless router.

Your information about the ‘a’ variant is wrong: the theoretical speed is 54Mbps, with a typical throughput of 20Mbps. That’s notably faster than ‘b’, though not as good as ‘g’ or ‘n’. It does run on a different spectrum, though, so for good speeds, you do need to be a bit closer to the device.

Great Post, but the real question is why are wireless connections so buggy. I get to reboot my computer and router all the time to get things working again. Given the choice I’ll always user Wired. …

Ya! Oneboxing for SuperUser articles.

@GeorgeEdison Oneboxing for all blog articles, actually. But SE blogs too, yes

@YiJiang That's great.

Well, the blog article has to come from the feeds

1:51 AM
Wow. Redesigned AT&T site, yet it still turns $100 into $1.00. =/

Not bad if that's your bill ;)

Well, if it counted for $100, I'd be fine with it. ;)

Heh, they're using jQuery and prototype.

For moar win?

I guess. Clearly they're still using the same backend technology, that makes me a bit sad, but ah well.
They need to minify their HTML too, apparently. :P
There's huuuuuuuge sections of whitespace.
45 blank lines in a row, the hell. :D

1:59 AM
Nice.

It got worse, there was one spot that even with 1080 pixels of vertical space I could not see tags anywhere. And there's randomly tabs on all of the lines for some reason. Good stuff.

Wow. Just. Wow.

Certainly not the worst sin you could commit, but I feel like you have to almost try to make that happen.

It certainly doesn't give me a warm and fuzzy feeling.

Neither does that huge popup that comes up if you accidentally mouse over one of the top links.
Hmm, where's waffles when I want to randomly ask him a question?

2:03 AM
Not around, of course.

I think that's an automatic -1.

Hmm...I'm starting to think that maybe the ntfs file handling isn't as reliable as one would hope. Or that maybe I have something misconfigured.

Hmm?

I have some of my old HDDs in my server. They're basically just data drives. I've been trying to move some stuff around, but I keep ending up with file corruption. Much of it is very slight, several dozen bytes, but it's definitely there.
One thought was that I'm pulling off an NTFS partition onto an ext4 on a new HDD. My initial thought was that the drive was having issues.
However, copying between ext4 partitions on that new drive so far doesn't seem to run into any corruption.
Mind you, I haven't done a very thorough test. I moved a huge chunk of data around on that same drive, but I forgot if I had checked for corruption. I just moved about 3GB and there was no corruption.

I see, interesting

2:12 AM
To make things more interesting, I'm now using rsync to try to copy off that NTFS volume and I'm still getting corruption.

Ridiculously foggy in Nanjing today

Blah. I wish I had noticed that I had picked up lotioned Kleenex, instead of the regular kind. They just don't feel right.
@YiJiang Remember, no high beams. ;)

@GeorgeMarian Aye?

Eh? Car headlights. High beams and fog don't mix.
I'm just trying to be witty. How's it working for yah?

Well, it's not doing wonders for my asthma...

2:21 AM
Yeah, the humidity around here doesn't go well with my mold allergies.

Oh wow, it is really foggy.

@YiJiang Dang, now that's fog you can cut with a knife.

Pea soup anyone?

> One Thatcher ally told the Guardian: "Lady Thatcher will not be seeing Sarah Palin. That would be belittling for Margaret. Sarah Palin is nuts."

2:35 AM
LOL

:D

> Apple will not give PC users access to iCloud – its great digital locker in the sky – if their machines are running Microsoft's aging but still popular Windows XP.
How lame.
> These messages included: "You should fix your internal sensor soon. If unsure what to do, try putting your laptop near hot steam for several minutes to clean the sensor."
WTF? Really?

2:50 AM
Oh man. It's getting worse, eh?

It is, and the air has this horrible burnt smell to it

d'oh
Did something blow up?

No, it's the farmers on the outskirts of the city burning wheat stalks to fertilize the ground. That and the high humidity from the rain this morning

Ah.
They place burn bans in our area sometimes because of the conditions.
I.e no fireplace for you!

Evening.

2:54 AM
hola

Just finished two day holiday. Had just 24 unread emails.yay spam Filters.
What do you do when you've opened an 8 month old project and are less than thrilled with thecode quality?

@Moshe Start over

Wish I had done more commenting. :)

@MichaelMrozek I'm considering it. @GeorgeMarian - that's not the problem. I just learned a lot about the iOS SDK over the past year and I would do a bunch of things differently.
I'm close enough to finishing for a 1.0 release. Is it stupid to finish up then rewrite?
Whatever I decide to do, it's not going to be accomplished in this chat room.
Thanks folks. I'll be back in a bit. Gotta get coding.

3:09 AM
@Moshe No, not at all. In fact you may want to rethink the rewrite. Are there actual problems? Granted, I doubt that this is huge project that carries a lot of risk if you rewrite it.

3:39 AM
I've kind of rewritten the open source project that I work on twice now. I did it incrementally though, by improving chunks of the code at a time, working towards a unified new version.

My language has grew to be unruly
I just had a line go: value.getValue().getValue().getValue();
(Basically, Variables can pretend to be real values, so getValue() is called to make get the real value... somehow I think I have VariableValues inside of VariableValues...)
The entire project needs a go over
but I'm presenting it tomorrow, then might think about revamping it
or just moving onto another project, like a summer job

Multiple annotations found at this line:

I'm pretty sure that's not a valid HTML warning, Eclipse.
@Chacha102 Where are you presenting?

@TimStone The entire project was an APCS final project

3:54 AM
Ah ha

@Chacha102 APCS?

AP Computer Science
Right now I'm wishing I had made sure that all classes had UnitTests behind them...
in which case I would be fairly certain that I could type select statements and get correct answers..

@Chacha102 cool, thanks!

Especially when something gets as complex as this, being confident in different parts of it is really required

4:29 AM
@GeorgeMarian - valid points. I'll think about them. Thank you.

4:53 AM
Hmm

5:05 AM
@jcolebrand I'm guessing from the context that you mean Prezi, it is quite swish. Nice presentation by the way, how'd it go?

'Ello there @Benjol

Hi @Tim, just popping in to answer a ancient post.
By the way, anyone here got enough rep to know why Jeff zapped my proposed-faq question? (If you don't know what I'm talking about, don't worry....)

The one that people didn't seem to realize was faq-proposed? :P
(I'm a bit lacking in the reps department though)

@TimStone, yup. I left a flag suggesting it might want clearing up if it ever made it to faq status, and it got cleared up rather more radically than I had envisaged...

5:22 AM
Morning :)

@ManjotSingh Good morning!
Wow, blogoverflow really evolved recently.

@MaximZaslavsky (:
like it?

ya, it's really cool!
Last time I visited, it looked completely different
and that was, what, 3 days ago?
probably longer...
great work!

Looks slick, no longer like some random sys admin or someone set it up. ;)
2

@MaximZaslavsky could be, Jin and I were just working on it yesterday and today.

5:27 AM
oh, nice
@RebeccaChernoff btw, quick question about that: what platform do those blogs run on? the blogoverflow site is custom, and the blogs themselves run on Wordpress, right?

the blogoverflow.com main site is a WP site as well, just with a "Page" set as the static front page

Running Fiddler and Wireshark at the same time won't bring on the end of days, right?

@RebeccaChernoff oh, cool!

@TimStone It might bring your network latency to an all time high

Naw..

5:31 AM
No wonder my latency is so high.
I always forget that they're on...

5:58 AM
@RebeccaChernoff Are replies to comments on blogs ever gonna show up in the notifier? :)

How to use blogoverflow?
How will it work?

@ManjotSingh, you click on the links and you read the text

oh that is the case,what is the aim behind it?

@RebeccaChernoff -1 for making me up-vote you and your informative answers.

@Benjol I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for that to happen. (:

6:01 AM
when there are faq

@ManjotSingh Connecting all the SE blogs and also allowing new SE communities to create their own blogs

@TimStone I'm...sorry?

@RebeccaChernoff OK, you can add it with [status-planned], I don't mind :)

ok,so can a normal man makes their own blogs?

@RebeccaChernoff nods

6:03 AM
For some definitions of normal

Hmm, now to remember what I was doing.

means user other then mods

Okay, I'm feeling my code again. No need for a rewrite just yet. I am going to add a bunch of superclasses and factor out what should have been initially.
And iOS 5 is gonna be awesome when the bugs are fixed.

@ManjotSingh, you're doing it again.READ.
3
There is a link saying "guidelines"
read it
click on it
bye all...

thank you
what is "your site’s child meta (meta.<site>.stackexchange.com"?
I dont have access in "Stack Exchange Community Blogs" :(

6:36 AM
@ManjotSingh Once again, as @Benjol was saying, "READ"

Is there a C function for encoding a string as a hash?
I have a password for a kiosk app where the simplest place to store it is in a textfile. I dont think it will be opened but on te off chance that it is, how do I simply hash it or encode in C/objective-c?

Hi Tombull89

Morning.

Very Good Morning but here is Afternoon :)

Monring!

Very Good Morning :)
do you have an idea of Unix?
(process:2771): Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library.
Using the fallback 'C' locale.
Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display "/tmp/launch-54qAnS/org.x:0".

Nope, I'm a Windows guy.

8:01 AM
Great
which technology you work on?

@ManjotSingh I'm a network technician for a school, so Server 2008, Active Directory, and VMWare ESX for starters.

I am also playing with VirtualBox now a days

I use VirtualBox at home but ESXi in work.

I am trying to find Window XP ISO file to run on VirtualBox do you have any idea?

Depends which version. If your boss isn't willing to give you a disc you can buy XP for quite cheap now.

8:07 AM
I have got Ubuntu ISO file running fine

or, Microsoft do offer a .vdi with Internet Explorer installed for dev purposes, although you need to check the useage license.

ok thanks

finally, if you have a TechNet account you could get a 90-day trial.

1 hour later…
9:19 AM
Afternoon.

Just a tip, you should be talking about using illegal Windows copies on the Internets.

no I am not
I am saying like Ubuntu is an open source

o...kay

Is there anyway to use it
If it is illegal I wont repeat it again :)

@Reno you might want to edit that. Also, I was trying to give viable options.

9:22 AM
@tombull89 could you please tell me the trial version link?

Oh I was not talking about you @tombull89 I was referring to yesterdays chat
2 days ago, by ManjotSingh
my boss wont allow me to do that

what?
so he wont allow me to use thats it

If there is any trial version which is legal to use then please tell me :)

is there a reason why he won't?

9:25 AM
ya as he was saying either to use legal version only or else try to develop BB app on mac
yesterday I got a way to run BB emulator on Mac OSX but
(process:2771): Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library.
Using the fallback 'C' locale.
Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display "/tmp/launch-54qAnS/org.x:0".

D: I saw the my typo
I hate it when this happens

what?
do you have any idea of it Reno?
I got this link for running BB emulator on Mac OS X

Given the numerous times you ask the question here @ManjotSingh I suspect that no one here knows the answer. So why don't you go to Apple or Unix and Linux or even on Stack Overflow to post a real question?

@Reno I did say...

ok thanks

9:33 AM
Nothing against you... but if nobody knows... nobody knows.

and as I've said before this is a M.SO room, rather than a SO one.

yeah ... soz

9:49 AM
ho
Do we have a list of all the StackExchange twitter accounts?

afternoon folks.

Good Afternoon :)

good night guys

Hi @Sathya

hey @Mvy. Do sites in public beta have twitter accounts?

9:59 AM
Some
StackUX I think

so the sites have stack<whatver> as their handles then

Hum...

Unix and Linux - Stack Exchange requires cookies for authentication -- are your browser cookies enabled for this domain?
Do anyone has idea of it?

@RobinHood time.is/CET

Great :)

(1) it wasn't to addressed in specific (2) it's a general chat room, not 1-1 private chat.

10:12 AM
@OctavianDamiean nice <oh wait, we've had this discussion before>

well not really :D
I just bought it

You want to root it @OctavianDamiean?

anyways I learnt how to play with Ubuntu after all

@OctavianDamiean ah.

10:13 AM
I'm still hesitant to do that as well

congrats, btw @OctavianDamiean
@Mvy why so?

Warranty stuffs

1 min ago, by M'vy
You want to root it @OctavianDamiean?

well I'm not hesitant actually

what does it mean?

10:14 AM
you could always flash the stock ROM

It's lingo @ManjotSingh like jailbreak for iPhone

I've flashed all my phones so far
HTC Magic, HTC Desire and now the HTC Desire HD :D
in a few minutes

HTC fan eh, @OctavianDamiean :P

no no. :D

10:16 AM
What are the real good thing you can get from rooting BTW?

I am having iPhone4,iPod touch,HTC wildfire

@Mvy full control over the phone and I need it for developing stuff

Well

@Mvy screenshots, full backup & restore amonst others

How to root it?

10:17 AM
also I can't stand the HTC Sense UI

Yep... they can do a lot more
with personalisation

HOW?

I own a Nexus S, there's no real reason for me root it, still have. Currently running on infin1ty

becareful I believe that flashing phones many times can cause problems

Is it legal to flash phone?

oh yea you can brick it easily

I think mobile companies make special devices which can withstand a lot of flashing

42 secs ago, by ManjotSingh
Is it legal to flash phone?

I guess they aren't available outside the company though

Depends on the country
By I think jailbreaking has been considerd legal in the US

10:19 AM
@Mvy where it is allowed?
LEGAL!

we have a saying, You can't buy courage, for the rest there is deodorant

@Mvy yeah, but Apple won't honour the warranty though

Yep

@ManjotSingh how about googling?
3

Oh I'm not talking about the legal stuff, more like the hardware can't take it

10:20 AM
@Mvy Apple allowed it?

Apple is tolerant to it. But they do not support it

@OctavianDamiean Star 6000!

@OctavianDamiean in what sense?

And that's normal
It's a modified software

@ManjotSingh I think what he's trying to say is

10:21 AM
you can't support home made modifications
too costly

I thought it is illegal...Here in India people do it

yesterday, by balpha
Seriously, I wish you would stop treating this room as your personal support hotline.

@ManjotSingh in the sense of Please please for gods sake search for such basic information yourself. Kthxbai.

@tombull89 Now what I did now?

@OctavianDamiean don't use things like kthxbai or memes, it just confuses them.

12 mins ago, by Sathya
(1) it wasn't to addressed in specific (2) it's a general chat room, not 1-1 private chat.

:D

oy, you might be right

@OctavianDamiean kthxbai?
Variation of 'kthxbye' - the internet bastardization of "OK, thank you, goodbye".

@ManjotSingh pro-tip: repeating the same thing in CAPS will only annoy others

writing something in CAPS means that you shout
we don't like people that shout

10:24 AM
@Sathya ok I wont repeat it again :)
2 mins ago, by ManjotSingh
@OctavianDamiean kthxbai?
@OctavianDamiean Do you like to use these types of words
Even I dont like these types of words

I occasionally use them, yes.

@OctavianDamiean +1

@OctavianDamiean every thing we blabla here are ontopic :)

A tavern is a place of business where people gather to drink alcoholic beverages and be served food, and in some cases, where travelers receive lodging. An inn is a tavern which, has a license to put up guests as lodgers. The word derives from the Latin taberna and the Greek ταβέρνα/taverna, whose original meaning was a shed or workshop. In the English language the tavern was an establishment which served wine whilst the inn served beer/ale. Over time, the words tavern and inn became interchangable and synonymous with one another. North America Americans drank heavily, for rum was che...

Nyan Cat (also known as Pop Tart Cat) is an internet meme, referring to an 8-bit animated gif of a flying cat with the body of a Pop-Tart, leaving a rainbow behind the cat; or to a video of the animated , set to a remix of the song "Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya!" Origin The cat animation was made by Chris Torres (PRguitarman) and he posted it to the website LOL-Comics. He made it to be "cute". もももも made his/her version of the song with the UTAU "Momone Momo" whose name comes from the kanji "momo" 桃, meaning "peach", and "ne" 音, meaning sound 桃音モモ's first name Momo "モモ" is written in katakana t...
