so much win :3

I am not a web designer. I will never be a web designer. The sooner I realize that, the fewer people will go blind.
Off to theme forest I go

@TimPost I used to do my own design for my own site, but I quickly realised buttons done in Word are not the way to go. (and I've used StyleShout in the past).

@tombull89 what I have in front of me is an atrocity that isn't fit for insect consumption, and I spent four days on it.

haha, that bad?

@tombull89 worse than 'that bad'
My design would have been killer back in 2003, though!

11:14 AM
Hi Tim
How are you?

Switching the Caps button with Ctrl is actually pretty nice

@tombull89 Wow, thanks for mentioning StyleShout, they have some half decent hosting templates (paid)
@ManjotSingh Tired, I was hoping to get my new site done, wasted four days attempting to design it myself.

11:31 AM
I really, really hope that if there is an afterlife, we aren't punished for writing bad code once entering it.

Why are you thinking like that,Everything is fine and will be fine also.
Be positive :)

@TimPost I've found someone who will get there well before you. I pointed this out earlier this week, but I think it was in a differet room. Go to [redacted], right click and view source, scroll down to line 43, then weep.

OH. MY. GOD.

What is this?

yeah...my brain exploded then leaked out my ear when I saw it for the first time.

11:35 AM
how would they understand the code?

and they do this on all their websites, just in varying amounts.

I mean its horrible
@tombull89 Is there any significance in writing in Italic ?

@tombull89 WTF.

emphasis, like bold.

and what is meaning of Bold?
I mean why people use Italic,Bold
Is there any special meaning behind them or what exactly?

11:38 AM
@Sathya yeah, I know, I know.

I am not getting answer Sathya?

eh, there's a Joel on Software Android App :D
@ManjotSingh it was sarcasm.

what was a sarcasm?

11:53 AM
ARGH, Mrozek's site is down.

thanks I didn't know about it
how to put that arrow?

@ManjotSingh like this

without mentioning any particular user name

he is like that annoying six year old kid who wont stop asking questions.
2

11:59 AM
@Mvy as He wrote without mentioning my name

@ManjotSingh Go read this: chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/faq. Will answer a few questions.

Now asking a question is also an offense?
@Sathya I know how to reply particular user but dont know how to reply a particular message without mentioning there name

you can't.

Ok, I got it thanks all :)

12:04 PM
everything you ask is a click or two away. Sorry but with so many simple questions it only looks like you are trolling us.

waits for what is trolling question

@Sathya isn't this trolling by the way?
^^

It may be possible that I dont know it because I am not as perfect as all
If you think that I am trolling then I wont be asking any question
I am trying to learn,I am obeying all rules.Still you think that I am trolling :(
I am not pinging directly anyone which you think annoying,I am not asking any technical questions here,I am trying to write complete and correct English in which I am weak.
Now what do you want that what should I that would not be trolling.

Not asking techicial questions?

@Mvy would seem so

@tombull89 I asked but now I am not asking

No you've improved quite a lot, but there is still some room for improvement, What these guys are telling you is is only for your own good. if you don't like it you can choose to go elsewhere and do the same.

Did I disrespect anyone.I asked technical questions here because I dont have access any other technical room but as per the demand I stopped asking technical questions here
Me too want to learn a lot and improved a lot and I am trying
Am I egoistic,arrogant,self-fish,self-centered etc.

I actually got this very same lolcat on SO today morning when I came across a bug while posting an answer. Captioned "Workin on your problem"

12:18 PM
Are you working on my problem?
2

oh god...

:)

O sorry.

/facepalm.

@tombull89 time to bring out the triple facepalm
4

12:21 PM
Double Facepalm
rofl

I peeked up a second from my editor
Umm
I'm going back to it now
/triple face palm

That was a my misunderstanding.:)

@ManjotSingh I needed the chuckle, thank you :)

I don't think that problem can be solved...

I am trying.....Please forgive me for my silly mistakes :)

12:22 PM
@ManjotSingh Making so many people laugh at once is hardly ever a mistake :)

anyhow,I'm out. Barcamp tomorrow. long travel day after. have a good weekend, all

Please dont be so rude.

@TimPost depends if you're doing it intentionally or not...

Cheers.

see ya @Sathya

12:23 PM
@ManjotSingh Oh I wasn't, I was just being appreciative :)

btw what is Barcamp?

.. and the cycle continues ;) poof

BarCamp is an international network of user-generated conferences (or unconferences). They are open, participatory workshop-events, whose content is provided by participants. The first BarCamps focused on early-stage web applications, and were related to open source technologies, social protocols, and open data formats. The format has also been used for a variety of other topics, including public transit, health care, and political organizing. History The name BarCamp is a playful allusion to the event's origins, with reference to the programmer slang term, foobar: BarCamp arose as an...

@Sathya heh. Bye, Sathya.

OMG I was thinking that is something related to Bar & Scotch :)
Bye Sathya :)

12:25 PM
@ManjotSingh so was I, first I ever heard of it as well. I was thinking more like 'pub crawl'
@ManjotSingh It is conceivable, though that bar camp might lead to pub crawls. It would depend on the attendees.

@TimPost Hi Tim Post, How are you?

exactly,I thought that it would be dark,Heavy music,Bar counters,Beer,Wine etc

@ManjotSingh It's not uncommon to have a hack a thon in a bar .. I've attended several.

@TimPost I was going to say it was a weekend camp where you learn how to mix drinks and become a bartender...:P

@Damodar Doing well, disappointed in trashing four days of work.

12:27 PM
@TimPost Now what is "hack a thon"?

@ManjotSingh what today topic dude....

...

@TimPost cool... , then enjoy your weekend

@Damodar I am trying to learn :)

@ManjotSingh what you are learning

12:28 PM
@ManjotSingh A hack a thon is where a group of programmers come together to work on a single project for an extended period of time. They set goals for new features and bugs to fix, lock themselves in a room and go to work on it
@ManjotSingh A hack a thon can last several days up to a week, depending on the participants

ok guys meet you after 1 hour, client call .....

@ManjotSingh It is a play on the word 'marathon'

Is it so?I would like to participate then

@ManjotSingh They are quite common in open source projects.

I dont find these types of things at my place
Might be at your place

12:33 PM
@TimPost do you know about bloging dude
@TimPost is there any possibilty of earning money by bloging.....

@Damodar Yes, there is a possibility, but it is rare that you earn significant money by blogging.
I earn about .. $600 / yearly from my site, which isn't very much

@TimPost ok, sorry if i you think this as offtopic, but as an software engineer, how can we earn money by leagal way....

@Damodar By .. umm.. writing software?

@Damodar by writing decent software?

@TimPost yes , is there any other ways...

12:37 PM
@Damodar Are you looking for a secondary income?

write more programs? get a better job?

@TimPost ya you are correct
@TimPost hey please give some tips , iam in client call, will check later.....

@Damodar If you find voids and come up with creative ways to fill them .. then yes, you'll earn some money. I'm about to start a new hosting company that caters specifically to programmers.
3

Great idea,can I also earn money while blogging?
but then I thought who will come on my blog :(

I am a part time ninja and it pays good

12:40 PM
If you want to earn money by blogging, you need to become a sharp writer. There is no way around that, if you want to earn money by writing, you must become a good writer.

Jeff and Joel have thousands and millions of hits on their blogs, but I doubt that it would make enough money for them to live.

the thing is who will se my writing,There are many and intellegents writer in market

@TimPost hosting company means?
@ManjotSingh that depends upon your blogs

Can I do part time ninja?
btw what is "ninja"?

@Reno ninja means?

12:42 PM
@Damodar Web hosting company. I'm starting one that gives programmers what they want by default, and never says no to reasonable requests. I'm too old to be a ninja. People who are too old to be ninjas start web hosting businesses.

A or was a covert agent or mercenary of feudal Japan specializing in unorthodox arts of war. The functions of the ninja included espionage, sabotage, infiltration, and assassination, as well as open combat in certain situations. The ninja, using covert methods of waging war, were contrasted with the samurai, who had strict rules about honor and combat. In his Buke Myōmokushō, military historian Hanawa Hokinoichi writes of the ninja: The origin of the ninja is obscure and difficult to determine, but can be surmised to be around the 14th century. However, the antecedents to the N...
I know gatka

I am a ninja-in-training, the pay's not too good :(

I can play with sticks,kirpan,chakkar etc

@tombull89 Is a ninja intern

I'm a part-time Meta-ninja

12:44 PM
But by Gatka I dont think I can earn,Its my hobby or you can say its a play :)

1:19 PM
back from barbecue! :D

great :)
are you done with your rooting a phone?

@646262 you there
@TimPost you there

@Damodar Yes, just actively focused on another monitor

1:34 PM
@ManjotSingh ho no I had no time to finish it, doing it now :)

@TimPost me to went for having snacks dude, very hungry.... :(
@TimPost another moniter, how many moniters do you have?

@Damodar 3

@TimPost working on 3 moniters, with 3 cpus, or 1cpu with 3 moniters

@Damodar One with 2 CPU's / 2 monitors, one with 1 CPU / 1 Monitor, single keyboard / mouse (Synergy)

@TimPost ha ha ha... ok, iam planning to earn money from home.. but it could be from augest . before that i want to gather some information regrading those things.

1:47 PM
You really have to spend a little money to make money. Being able to edit 3 files in the same code repo on 3 different screens is smart, or one screen for googling while you edit in the other two
Just shoving your distractions to one side helps.

@TimPost iam came to know that you also working from... :), what the way you choosen and how many ways there are to earn from home ... these are the questions rounding in my brain....

Would you prefer three small (19") screens or two medium screen (23")?

@TimPost hey to be frank, your english is very highlevel, ok i have to learn let me goolge those words...

@Damodar You will never make money if you say "Hmm, how can I make money?" You have to find a real problem to solve and attack it.

@TimPost You have to find a real problem to solve and attack it. So were can i find a problem to slove it?

1:52 PM
@Damodar Well, programmers hate writing unit tests. Go forth and solve.

@TimPost no timpost, iam not shoving for once help without my effort, you guys are moving in right way in good track.. so how you able to find that way , where you find that way? if i get information about those. i will also move in that way and put my efforts...

@Damodar Start with your own frustrations. What do you dislike that could be made better?
@Damodar If you dislike stepping in heaps of steaming goat vomit every time you search for some topic, then start a blog on that topic that doesn't suck. If you hate existing continuous integration services, write one that you don't hate. The best things we produce often stem from frustration.
@Damodar I have a list, just a text file with the following headings : "What am I passionate about?" "What don't I like?" "What makes me run like hell?" It's handy to make sure you stay happy and productive.
2

Is there anybody in this room who has experience with migrating to the US through a job?
5
(Maybe I could convince a kindly room owner to pin this question for a while?)

@Pekkasothertrollingaccount Me, but I'm a US Citizen. My wife is Filipino
@Pekkasothertrollingaccount I've dealt with immigration quite a bit. Not sure I have all of the answers, but I may be able to help.
@Pekkasothertrollingaccount Pinned

Brilliant, thanks!
I'll write up my main question in a minute, maybe you can say something about it.

2:02 PM
@TimPost " I have a list, just a text file with the following headings : "What am I passionate about?" "What don't I like?" "What makes me run like hell?" It's handy to make sure you stay happy and productive." To be frank iam not getting , please can you explain , in which context you want this headings?

@Damodar You have to love what you do, or you will seriously suck at everything you try.

@TimPost ok i got it....

I want to immigrate (on a H-1B or ideally a Green Card) through an IT job. My key concern at the moment is credentials. I haven't studied what I do, and my understanding is I need to prove professional work experience instead, four years for every year of Uni; a minimum of twelve years for a Green Card.
I can scratch together 12 years of experience, but the thing is that I've been self-employed most of that time. So I don't have any normal job references. Most clients and former clients however are ready to provide me with a write-up outlining what I did for them. I'm asking myself whether

@TimPost ya i agree with you... before to do to something, i should be confident that, if i take up this , i will have good earnings. Iam looking for that friend..

@TimPost forgot to @ you above.
I can largely influence the way the clients' write-up looks like, so hints what it should look like are much welcomed.

2:13 PM
@Pekkasothertrollingaccount do you have tax returns of some kind?
@Pekkasothertrollingaccount The main concern on the US side is that you won't become a public charge, e.g. you won't fall out of work and need US tax payer dollars for your welfare.

@Pekkasothertrollingaccount ya if you have tax returns that is sufficient to show as witness as you have experience

@TimPost I do, except maybe for the first year. Everything else is there, including copies of invoices for services rendered, and bank statements to prove payment.
@TimPost Yeah, I totally see.

@Pekkasothertrollingaccount If you can show that you were indeed paid a standard wage during the years of self employment, it might be considered. I highly suggest consulting an immigration attorney, however.
@Pekkasothertrollingaccount I come under the same scrutiny for demonstrating that I can support my family, after years of freelancing.

@TimPost yeah, I will be able to show that. Re Attorney - it's probably going to be unavoidable. Do you happen to have a recommendation?
@TimPost interesting!

@Pekkasothertrollingaccount Shoot an e-mail to tinkertim@gmail.com, yes I have one, but it isn't appropriate here ...

2:16 PM
@Damodar that is good to hear - should be doable.
@TimPost will do

@TimPost now iam seraching for freelance sites on blogs to find the best one...

@Damodar what is your native language?

but your advices give me more confidence. thanks a lot
@TimPost you mean naturally speaking language

@Damodar Yes

@TimPost its "telugu" dude

2:21 PM
@Damodar Starting any venture begins with "What do I have?"
If blogging, you have at least one language where you are 100% confident.
Now, what do people that speak your language want to read about? Does it coincide with knowledge that you have to share?

@TimPost great expalnation, i every read such words in english... No dude, blogging will not suit for me, because, iam not great writer. so that only i stopped asking questions on Meta So .So other option i have is, the technology i working...

@Damodar do you solve interesting problems?

FFS - "the projector remote isn't working" - "you'll need to push the big green power button, rather than the small red laser pointer one." TGIF.

@Damodar What exactly do you do for your job?

@TimPost hey in my old organisation, i developed seperate framework
@TimPost I took many challanging task, even achieved those...

2:26 PM
@Damodar Then perhaps a programming blog

T.G.I.Fibromyalgia! (damn you autocorrect!)

@Damodar rule #2, if you build it, they seldom come. You need to develop a bit of a following, people who are interested in what you happen to be doing.

@TimPost ok

@Damodar Take a look at this site: builditwith.me There are developers and designers, each with ideas, looking for their counter-part to build something.

@Damodar The best fit for you would probably be watching the dozen or so reputable freelance sites and bidding on projects.

2:28 PM
@TimPost sure dude...

@Damodar build up your savings. Programmers tend to be financially stupid, I even blogged about that.

@TimPost i heard from many guru.com is best as freelancer site...

@Damodar Rule #3 - the 'great idea' will always hit when you have no time or resources to do anything with it.
2

@TimPost that i need to habbited, iam very poor in savings,

@TimPost Amen to that.

@TimPost timpost, if you free, please can you send that link to my email address damuchinni@gmail.com .As iam in office , iam unable to open it.

@TimPost heh, I read that a while ago. Very good post. I recognized my mid-twenties-old self in there
Not anymore though. There's no better way to learn how to deal with money than a draught :)

Hoping to hit 10k today, I am wearing my StackOverflow t-shirt :)

@Pekkasothertrollingaccount Once you hit the feast a few times and the bottom falls out, preparing for the famine just becomes second nature.
@Pekkasothertrollingaccount It was kind of moving for me, the last time I saw those people, all of us were virgins with pimples taking a picture in front of a VAX that we just dismantled.

@TimPost yeah.
@TimPost hahahahaha!

2:37 PM
All of them far better programmers than me, but I'm the only one not in serious debt. Go figure.

@TimPost i think you was good romantic fellow when your at age of teens.....

@TimPost it's a cultural problem as well I think, in all of the western world. You are encouraged to spend, and if necessary go in debt to do it, because that is supposed to bring the growth necessary to pay the debt. Our fathers and grandfathers at least seem to have a better hold on these things traditionally

@Pekkasothertrollingaccount That's why I now live in South East Asia. I had to get out of that.

@TimPost Interesting and understandable!

@Pekkasothertrollingaccount where do you live

2:39 PM
@Damodar in western Germany.

@TimPost I'm not in debt, mainly becuase I didn't go to Uni and the majority of my friends did. I'm OK-ish with saving, if I need (or want something ) I'll save up for it.

mostly debt free over here.. just got the house to pay for, a no-interest thing with dell, and a small credit card for gas.

Then again, I do live at home, no morgage, and no kids :P

@TimPost me tooo donot have any debts
@Pekkasothertrollingaccount iam from India...
@TimPost you dude?

2:41 PM
@Damodar Which part?
(Not that I'm really familiar with any of them, but it's such a big country!)

@Damodar From the US, I've been in The Philippines for 6 years.

@Pekkasothertrollingaccount South India from Andhra pradesh state
@TimPost are you working there??

@Damodar I telecommute. My job is in the US.

@TimPost your job in US and working from Philippines

@Damodar Yes, I'm quite sure I explained that?

2:44 PM
@TimPost ya ....
:646430 the girl you holding is your child?

It's an interesting story on how I landed here, I'll tell it some other time
@Damodar Yes, that's my daughter.

@TimPost okey, i guess, yours is love marriage.... and your wife belongs to Philippines

Anyway, needless to say, The world is a big place. I'm out to see as much of it as I can while being a responsible parent.

@TimPost so you were staying at Philippines

@Damodar I own property in The Philippines.

2:47 PM
@TimPost but that is very cool pic, when ever i see that pic, i get rememberence of my son....

I should've gotten the Electorate badge.. over 600 votes and over 25% are on questions. Where do I go with my pitchfork? :)

@Fosco Jeff was last seen riding a scooter

@Fosco it's not instant, AFAIK. Give it a few hours, then tear up M.SO.

It was ~24 hours ago... so, post on MSO?... ok

@tombull89 ya you are right

2:49 PM
@Fosco on what site?

@Fosco then knock Jeff for it... :)

@TimPost StackOverflow.

@Fosco (had to ask, people network wide come here)

ok guys... its time to leave
good night
see you on monday
bye

@Damodar Bye, good night!

2:51 PM
@Fosco That's 237 / 610 on questions

which is ~38%.. has to be > 25%, so I'm eligible

Yeah, about 38%

posting on MSO

@Fosco I don't know why, yeah, post it on MSO
@Fosco About 39% if I understand how they round (I can't be sure of that)

according to this meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/78511/… you need to have over 600 question votes
(since im not a noob, i am checking the questions with similar titles box)

2:56 PM
@Fosco I think the badge specification is ambiguous.
@Fosco (note, I have that badge, I wasn't expecting it)

@Pekka are you around?

now that I read it... it does say vote on over 600 questions.. No badge for me.

@Fosco that's too bad :-( now that you mention it, how can I see my progress on the editing badges?

You could make me feel better with one more upvote on this :) lol

A: What's the difference in these ways of determining uploaded file size in PHP?

Fosco$_FILES[$upload_name]["size"] This is populated for you by PHP after receiving the uploaded file. $file_size = @filesize($_FILES[$upload_name]["tmp_name"]); This is a wasteful method that goes out and gets the file size from the drive, even though it's already populated inside $_FILES[$uploa...

that simple answer got 8 upvotes in 8 minutes, but i was already capped for the day.

3:03 PM
@Benjol smashing thanks for asking, and thanks for introducing that here.

@Pekka I'm listening to some random German music that I found/was told about. It's (heavy?) metal/rock. Unheilig, Die apakolyptischen Reiter, Rammstein

Have you heard of any of those?

@Moshe Rammstein is fairly well known and I know a few of their songs, but I'm not really into that kind of music so I don't know much about it. The other two I don't know at all

@Pekka can you recommend some bands that are a little less intense that might be helpful to learn some vocabular?. (although songs are kinda bad for that.)

3:06 PM
@Moshe ohh boy, I'm the wrong person for that, I hardly listen to German-language music at all :) But hold on, I'm sure I can scratch together some contemporary bands worth listening to.

Danke!
@Pekka btw, it was kinda funny - I found a death metal cover on Dchingis Khan. It had growling and organs and whatnot.

@Moshe hmm, all the contemporary mainstream bands I know - Juli, MIA, Silbermond - are not necessarily good for learning, their pronunciation is not exactly clear
Maybe a question for german.stackexchange.se ?

Great idea, will do!

@Moshe The only german-language Band that I love is Mediengruppe Telekommander, but I don't think they meet your requirement of "less intense" :) But they happen to speak very clear german, it's part of their style.

@Fosco the big list of badges now has examples to illustrate Electorate:

3:12 PM
@PopularDemand Thanks.. yeah, finally figured that out..

Thank you.

Man, looking at the stars, it's like this room is just for watching Tim Post talk to Damodar.

@Moshe by the way, I'm currently clearing out my household and discovered an issue of PHP Magazine and two issues of c't. Was it you who asked about them some time ago?

3:15 PM
Hello

Yea, @Pekka twas.

I just spent the last 12 minutes trying to figure out what I was going to eat for lunch

@Moshe I might be able to send them to the US for €7 shipping, if I read the postal service's site correctly
@Moshe I have to add Telekommander as an answer to that :)

Ok. @Pekka at risk of sounding cliche on the Internet, got paypal?

@Moshe I do, the E-Mail address in my profile is my paypal ID as well

3:18 PM
Ok. I'll be in touch with you next week. Is that okay?
Also, if anyone at all wants to upvote my question, please - feel free.
I have to go now.
Tschüss!

@Moshe sure, no problem. I'll keep them around
Later then!

1 hour later…

eh?

This one's interesting; I can't figure it out.

also sounds like a variation on the knapsack problem

@Pekkasothertrollingaccount Your mailer is too paranoid to receive e-mail from gmail. I tried.

4:47 PM
@Tim Wut, really? O_o
What does it say? That's really bad - I have turned off all spam filtering so's I can do that myself, and don't lose any mail. Could you forward the error to me?

@Pekkasothertrollingaccount REJECTED from G-Mail

@TimPost weird, thanks. I'll file a complaint right away

back

They found out Tim Post was using Bing on the weekends. (as a verb, too.)

4:53 PM
@Pekkasothertrollingaccount Email with all fail glory sent to your alternate

@TimPost thank you!

@TimPost will you pull that alternate email off the stream?

@TimPost interestingly, this seems to be GMail weirdness. I have my primary E-Mail address (the GMX one) registered with my Google account.
It seems as if your GMail sends mails to that GMX address to my GMail account instead, leading to some kind of screwup. Very odd

@jcolebrand what alternate?

Danke

5:01 PM
I have a love / hate relationship with synergy atm
@Pekkasothertrollingaccount Yeah, I was surprised to see it bounce. In any event, you got the info?

@TimPost not yet, but maybe it's worth waiting a few minutes
@TimPost Correction, I got it. It indeed seems like GMail treats this as an internal message, triggering my GMail redirection rules, which must be broken somehow
@Tim Ah, and it has the original mail as well. Thanks very much, the recommendation sounds great!

@TimPost sounds great. I probably won't be able to afford a complete "from start to finish" package, but I'm glad if she can give me some starting points, and it's good to know somebody one can call if things turn sour.
@TimPost yeah, thanks!

@Pekkasothertrollingaccount Feel free to e-mail me as things go. It's a tough process,

@TimPost thanks for the offer, good to know!
