1:04 PM
@JourneymanGeek nope, your not that special
@Luuklag I'm looking at a twitter thread with one former employee, a CM and a dev talking about it
I'm at least slightly special :D
@JourneymanGeek return of the Twittergate
@EkadhSingh Oh, this is the nice part of town

This is why we connected with the speaker set to ON; so we could do this:

True.
Yeah.
hi theresa
Hey folks
How are things in the Tavern?
1:17 PM
o/
@JourneymanGeek maybe you're blocking it with an extension? that's what I'm doing now :)
@g3rv4 Here's the wierd part
My browser has a built in cookie settings thing blocker
but I never turned it on
And EVERYONE uses adblock so it can't be that
I just dismissed it once, and that was that for me
huh... well... lucky you :)
@TeresaDietrich vaguely nostalgic, and me being annoyed that things work properly :D
.... actually
if things on the Internet just worked, a lot of us would have to find new careers

1:21 PM
@TeresaDietrich well, in this case, its just working :D
but not the way you want it to?
Well - more that I didn't realise its broken for other people :D
@JourneymanGeek what's your hipster browser?
Even if at this point, its pretty much past mod triage - and has devs aware of it
@g3rv4 Vivaldi
@g3rv4 basically the 'spiritual' successor of opera
:)
1:25 PM
@JourneymanGeek thats luxurious, the four seasons ;)
I might want to try flux, but the alpha only runs on modern rpis
feels like a high end browser for the elite
and this is very much a X86 farm
@TeresaDietrich Hah. I'm very much a working class computery person :D
@TeresaDietrich some of us are Brave enough to live life on the Edge and be amazed by shiny Chrome
I admit Elite would be an awesome name for a browser ...
._.
@rene You're firefoxed
1:28 PM
Can you imagine the adoption rate for the Elite browser
@TeresaDietrich really bad :D
but entertaining
But... its all chrome underneath so stuff works
you could nickname it EliteBro
lol
It insists no one talks politics and people should work for their webpages?
1:30 PM
naming things is hard but to annoy marketing I take EliteBro ...
@JourneymanGeek PayPerView for webpages?
@rene clearly. Can't have people freeloading on unpaid content

Q: Linux text-only web browser that renders images in ASCII art

dr_I remember having seen a screenshot of a Linux terminal-only (text) web browser, like links or lynx, but this one was able to render images (in color) using ASCII art. Unfortunately I don't remember the name. Does anyone know it, or have a suggestion for a similar software?

I think I used lynx for a few months
Before we got "real" WWW, there was an add on to our interactive teletext service that let you browse text only internet
@Rob I remember answering this one: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/384758/…
@Rob It would be nice to be able to use SE on a terminal
One of the SREs kinda had a webapp for that but it kinda went dead
1:34 PM
@TeresaDietrich can I quote this in my Den? :)
quote what?
14 mins ago, by Teresa Dietrich
if things on the Internet just worked, a lot of us would have to find new careers
^ @TeresaDietrich
totally
i say it all the time
1:35 PM
So far, I've been working on the internet, and it's going fine. Better than in an office :P
lol
Work is completely airgapped :D
@Tinkeringbell If not for pesky things like hackers and national security, I could probably do my job at home :D
@JourneymanGeek this one: stackapps.com/questions/542/…
i used to enjoy working in the Data Center rooms, white noise, nice and cool and no people to bother me
@rene I remembered it was Mark - but not the app
1:37 PM
@TeresaDietrich If the office space is 'open' enough... the noise of all the people itself becomes white noise. But there's always that one annoying laugh...
@TeresaDietrich sadly I've only had one of those jobs. In the current one, we'd only hit the server room if it literally caught fire ._.
Also working on hardware is fun :D
@JourneymanGeek To an extent, there are coworkers at this client that can't work from home either, same security reasons ;)
I started at AOL back in like '96 so I got a lot of data center time

@Tinkeringbell I mean, you've probably heard me complain about my job too much :D
oh wait time to update tags, I guess. lol
My experience with Data Centers is that I often got escorted out ...
@rene head first or feet first?
Rob
Rob
Oops, that hooked the wrong comment - sorry Teresa.
@JourneymanGeek It evens out :P I complain about mine too :P

@JourneymanGeek whatever rocked their boat

Darn KBD.
whatever sunk their battleship?
I miss data centers
Why does this room have the waffles tag?
@TeresaDietrich I think anyone who worked with real hardware does to an extent.
1:41 PM
@EkadhSingh Old joke. It's replaced by stroopwafels now, mostly.
@EkadhSingh because waffles
@EkadhSingh You had to wear your SO Shirt and eat waffles
it was the old laws.

Dunno but being escorted out by people with guns and suits is rather... exciting. :D
@Tinkeringbell Okay that makes sense. Thx :)
@TeresaDietrich isn't it time again for an upgrade? Maybe ask the team if you can help out. Last time seemed fun: blog.serverfault.com/2015/03/05/… ;)

How else would you threaten a blurry flower? :D
There is a big refresh of HW going on but they don't let me touch machines anymore either in person or virtually
@EkadhSingh No problem.
@TeresaDietrich alas.
@TeresaDietrich No machines at all? Ugh, that makes life a lot more boring ;-)
1:45 PM
I was going to say - its possible they did that in between but might not have been a blog
@JourneymanGeek ohhh lol
But I didn't see any mention on twitter
yeah, the things you give up for leadership, i miss hands on tech sometimes
@TeresaDietrich nice! Any details you can share before Nick post on his blog/Twitter? :)
@TeresaDietrich so you can't touch even coffee machine?! :-O
all i do at this point is get the budget and approve purchases but i think the target was this summer
1:47 PM
@TeresaDietrich heh - one of the reasons I have a home lab is hand on tech is good for one's sanity :D
i live across the street from the office and have been tempted to sneak in and use that amazing coffee machine since the office is closed
@TeresaDietrich LOL
@TeresaDietrich secret socially distanced ninja coffee run?
@TeresaDietrich You must have the shortest commute of all then
1:48 PM
i live so close the espresso wouldn't even cool
And yeah, I'm tempted to do the same, but my commute would be 10 mins
when i did commute i spent more time in elevators than outdoors
You got hired based on location, or just a coincidence? @Teresa :)
just a coincidence, i think?
I suspect y'all would spend less time than I do walking from the entrance of my totally non secret government facility to my office than the whole distance :D
but it was appealing to me, i had a walking commute once before and it was glorious
It tends to be :D
I worked close to home when I was teenager.
Worked in the village swimming pool, located 0 meters away. (My home back then is right next to it.)
Its a good time to think :D
1:51 PM
Had to walk a minute to reach the gate though, easier than climbing the fence each time. :P
@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard coulda stuck a ladder there :D
@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard had someting similar when I lived with my parents, I used to work across the road
@JourneymanGeek huh! Pity you weren't around back then to tell me. ;)
Closest I've worked was for the family business - next unit.
(actually indirectly how we got the late Mr Ash)
@Luuklag yeah, quite similar. What work?
@JourneymanGeek nice... what's the business?
1:52 PM
@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard Worked at a tree nursery
@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard engineering consultancy
@Luuklag tree what?! lol
you know where they grow trees
I was the IT tech/delivery person/problem solver/dog wrangler.
@Luuklag ohh... isn't it called greenhouse?
1:53 PM
"Hey Geek? We need to ship out this pallet in 2 hours and we need to get a carton strapper"
nope, cause that requires it to be inside a glass building
@Luuklag oh, had no idea. lol
Learned new thing today: check. :D
(I don't really think I've ever worked non IT, and I'd be pretty bad at anything. Even if I wonder if I could quit my job and work at a dog sanctuary or something sometimes :D )
@JourneymanGeek sounds vague ;)
@Luuklag I worked inside one of those... too hot in summer, too cold in winter XD
1:54 PM
@JourneymanGeek oh, that's less vague. Nice!
@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard Well - we ... fixed port projects
A nursery is a place where plants are propagated and grown to a desired age. They include retail nurseries which sell to the general public, wholesale nurseries which sell only to businesses such as other nurseries and to commercial gardeners, and private nurseries which supply the needs of institutions or private estates. Nurseries may supply plants for gardens, agriculture, forestry and conservation biology. Some of them specialize in one phase of the process: propagation, growing out, or retail sale; or in one type of plant: e.g., groundcovers, shade plants, or rock garden plants. Some produce...
So lets say you're running a port in some third world country
and you need things fixed cause they're terrible, or help facilitate new equipment and you don't have the skills.
You call these guys. And they're like "this is too hard"
they subcontracted it to us
serial port?
We found out what was needed, got the contacts and such, and... fixed things
@rene the sort with ships.
Rob
Rob
1:56 PM
I basically stayed here and made sure stuff happened
Rob
Rob
That's a nursery!
@JourneymanGeek Ah, Rotterdam
@Rob Somehow, nursery reminds me of kids, not plants. But plants are definitely better!
@rene The netherlands isn't a third world country
I think we did stuff in Libya pre fall of ghadaffi
1:57 PM
@JourneymanGeek wait till you visit here ...
@JourneymanGeek You'd be surprised.
Half the third world is already here :P
Rob
Rob
That's Cristina Lake, a secure facility.
@Rob shame that its all container cultivation
this is more like it
@Tinkeringbell :(
Rob
Rob
Soil is best, and it's easier to adjust the spacing in containers, plus each can have individual feeding - perhaps you need to zoom in on the photo :)
@Luuklag You can smoke that.

@ThiefMaster no
@EkadhSingh harsh truths :P But plants complain a lot less!
Rob
Rob
: coughing:
2:04 PM
@Rob ah that's why. Yeah those cultivations are more "expensive" then it makes sense to go into containers
especially to get rid of soil borne diseases
because that would made it a very well made address phishing mail - i just got one about "SO swag for having exceeded 250k rep since 2019", and it links to something google-forms-like on https://info.stackoverflowsolutions.com
Rob
Rob
Those trees sell for at least 300 each, minimum.
@ThiefMaster looks sus
whois looks legit though, "stack exchange inc"
2:05 PM
@ThiefMaster @TeresaDietrich or @JNat does either of you know if that's legit?
@ThiefMaster well it might be, if you visit the site the footer is there
not that it wouldn't be easy to fake that
@ThiefMaster whois seems to be SE inc
@ThiefMaster worth checking/asking on meta
@Luuklag if i made a phishing site i'd make sure as hell to copy UI elements from the real thing ;)
Maybe @TeresaDietrich can clarify ;)
2:06 PM
i'm lazy so i was hoping for some SE employee to be around here :P
if nothing else, its worth having a canonical resource for this
lemme see if we own it
meta.stackexchange.com/questions/81379/… not listed here, so if its owned by SE, might be worth updating
@Tinkeringbell but kids are better because um, actually, never mind you have a point. Plants are better :)
Can't find any mentions of STACKOVERFLOWSOLUTIONS.COM on a quick meta search either ._.
2:09 PM
yeah, I got a lot of marketing emails and landed there to unsubscribe
@Tinkeringbell Yes, this is us!
we're sending an email out to start collecting user info so that we an send you your items
cc @ThiefMaster ^ :D
saw it, thanks!
@JuanM why use the strange domain for sending emails?
@Luuklag It's just where the form is hosted ;)
2:11 PM
we often use different domains for emails sent by 3rd parties
that was a requirement from marketing...unfortunately, our marketing email system needs to add that so that the emails can be processed in bulk
They used to use google docs for that in the past :D
less messy that way
yeah, not my favorite but it's what we have
doesn't meet GDPR and other data privacy laws
2:12 PM
@ThiefMaster @JuanM - might be good to have a Q&A pair on this?
yup, heading out to write one now
@TeresaDietrich You could have a look at jotform
We use it all the time, works great, and Isn't crazy expensive
especially not in the context of a company the size of SO
Who’s going to update this
@EkadhSingh You could!
Thanks for the chat folks, I am off to resume a day of meetings
2:14 PM
Okay
Its a community wiki after all
I'd suggest waiting on Juan first so you have the details
@JourneymanGeek How did I not notice that (facepalms)
thanks all, I'm ending a meeting so I can go address this on Meta
I'll link here when it's up
So many meetings ;)
@JourneymanGeek Already updated it, linked to chat as source ;)
You guys could put a more relevant source in when Juan finishes
2:16 PM
yup
I always thought SE used a single wildcard cert for everything, which threw me off a bit.
(though I guess that's for Q&A)
@Luuklag risky to use a gender-specific pronoun in a room with so many moderators.
@EkadhSingh how so? It's not that I'm gendering a specific person
@EkadhSingh I think there's a reasonable level of leeway there - unless someone finds it troublesome
also in certain parts of the world, guys is used gender neutrally for a group of people
@EkadhSingh Meh. Guys isn't that gender-specific. I'm rather one of the guys than the 'gal that get's tagged on at the end' XD
2:22 PM
And well - correct pronouns are very much a matter of respect more than anything else. If anyone minds we could work it out.
@JourneymanGeek this probably nickcraver.com/blog/2017/05/22/https-on-stack-overflow/… but yeah, that doesn't cover marketing stuff
@rene I know, and forgot they switched to LE as soon as they could
Marketing is always special, marketing people are "special"
hence the mention of wildcards
2:24 PM
@Luuklag naw - I think its also that no non 'se' managed servers would be on a foo.se or foo.so domain
the mail server is special
likewise the blog

Q: Addressing a group of women as "you guys"

Marco LeograndeThe word "guy", in its singular form, is used to refer to a man, so it's gender specific. However, in colloquial language, you can also use the expression "you guys" to refer to a group of people. When used in the plural form, is "guys" gender agnostic? Can you use "you guys" to refer to a group...

@Luuklag true. They do have lots of budget to spend so ...
@Rob I don't use it in writing but I struggle to not use it in spoken English at times. It's interesting how the brain handles those two actions.
@Catija I suspect its a regionalism
But I just write "y'all" all the time and apparently I don't like saying "It was fun hanging out with y'all" when I'm bidding someone adieu.
2:30 PM
I thought that was either a texanism or a shogism :D
Apparently I said it in my "toddler who sounds like Yosamite Sam stage"
I mean, I'm not going to say "y'all come back now, ya hear!"
XD That sounds like a bad comboy movie, even when it's written.
@EkadhSingh @JourneymanGeek @Tinkeringbell @Luuklag @ThiefMaster I went ahead and edited the original swag post to include the sending address we're using.
not a problem!
2:43 PM
@JourneymanGeek your edit was sloppy, so slopy it failed to make a link ;)
._.
I might be multitasking
jk. just had an extra H, in https ;)
you can't be hyper enough
hyper hyper, thats scooter right
Rob
Rob
@Catija Not an expert, y'all, but it's never singular; and saying that excludes a portion of the group - perhaps you want y'all y'all for everyone:
Pronoun: all o' y'all
  1. Alternative form of all y'all
all'y are funny, but i'all is fine too
@Rob It's definitely never singular.
"someone" in my other message wasn't intended to be a single person.
Rob
Rob
> "... when I'm bidding someone adieu."
sounds singular.
Give me a break.
The "y'all" came first - making it plural.
I'm sorry I failed to use "a group of people" instead of "someone".
Rob
Rob

A: Plural form of "someone"'?

saillaelSomeone, and indeed any indefinite pronoun that ends in "one" is always singular. The word people is a good choice; however, the second part of your compound sentence sounds as if you are talking to only one person. You may want to restructure the sentence to reflect this.

I understand the context, and get it either way

@MetaAndrewT. Italian! Do they come with a pizza?
:D
@user400654 That sentence makes more sense in nethack than here
Thinking about it, toilets are made more for females, wonder how come nobody press charges yet. :D
@JohnDvorak they're not designed for urinating while standing
So males have less use for ordinary toilets.
that's where pissoirs come in
6:23 PM
Piss what?
I mean... urinals
oh OK, Googled it.
@JohnDvorak outdoors, in the open, yeah. lol
Still, urinals is alternative, not a solution.
We call them pissoirs here, but that's a different thing in English ... because of course why would Czech ever use a loan word in it original meaning?
@JohnDvorak yeah saw the wiki
Here in Israel it will never work, people way too conservative in those things. :/
Urinals are the solution. Even if you have stormtrooper aim, they free up space for you in the sitting section
6:26 PM
@JohnDvorak but they can't replace toilets since males also need to sit down, sometimes.
Ideally, toilets will have two "states".
they do have two states
In fact, whenever I was at any big event, they'd have repurposed half the male booths for female usage, and they'd still get massive queues while male booths didn't.
@user400654 seat up, seat down? Too primitive.
"standby" and "flushed"!
@JohnDvorak of course, females also take longer doing same thing. I think.
6:30 PM
(and if a pub is shady enough, they don't even have urinals, just a sheet metal wall that descends into a trough)
Rob

Man standing on urinal is higher than man on pot.

@Tinkeringbell How many copied sentences before it counts as plagiarism? A few of the sentences are slightly changed, but most are identical word-for-word.
I'd say that counts then. Especially if they didn't give the source....
Alright. Submitted flag.
Strange. This person is not totally new. They have 3k+ rep.
