Y'all need to be more environmentally responsible:
Roadkill cuisine is preparing and eating roadkill, animals hit by vehicles and found along roads. It is a practice engaged in by a small subculture in the United States, southern Canada, the United Kingdom, and other Western countries as well as in other parts of the world. It is also a subject of humor and urban legend. Large animals including deer, elk, moose, and bear are frequently struck in some parts of the United States, as well as smaller animals such as squirrels, opossum, armadillos, raccoons, skunks, and birds. Fresh kill is preferred and parasites are a concern, so the kill is typically...
Wait, that's haram.
Rob
Rob
Driving?
And people wonder why nature rebels against us by creating nasty viruses... ;)
eating found corpses.
Even eating animals you killed by your car would probably count as haram because they weren't properly bled out
@Tinkeringbell in the anglophone world, yes
12:09
@JourneymanGeek Weird.
Even Christians are forbidden from eating blood
I thought that part of the world was less squeamish when it came to food.
@JohnDvorak Eh, not all.
@Rob So they hunt, with a car this time?
Some part of that is sick
@Tinkeringbell google.com/…
Rob
Rob
It is carelessness or accident, not processing the information being provided quickly enough.
Acts 15:28 (KJV) For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things; 29 That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.
12:15
@Tinkeringbell Only if it's processed food you find delicious without wondering what's inside
@Rob Oh wait, I interpreted "struck" as if they do it intentionally
Normal roadkill is just gross.
And if it's gonna take an hour before you cut up the roadkill, probably dangerous
@JohnDvorak Yeah but that's inconvenient!
Rob
Rob
^^^ The CO2 slaughter of pigs is something a bit less than "strangling"; but seems no nicer.
"The carbon dioxide shortage" -- excuse me what?
Rob
Rob
@M.A.R. That's OK. They can simply change the way they do it from now on; and both will be correct.
I've seen one slaughter, and they just tazed it to the neck and slit its throat. I would have never considered just breathing at it until it dies.
"[pigs] exhibit strong reactions for a period of up to 30 seconds" - and they call that humane?
I can see how chasing a chicken with a stun gun would be inconvenient, but ... pigs?
I like the idea of suffocating them with low-pressure air. It works a charm for humans. It should do fine for pigs.
Rob
Rob
12:30
Also used is the 'cattle gun', like in the film "No Country For Old Men"; works for people too, and door locks.
What a movie, btw
@JohnDvorak The general idea behind christianity over here is that we just keep the 10 commandments, and we can discard all the other ones set out in the old testament, for some reason.
I can not however find any sources that explain how or why or any solid reasoning for doing so.
Which makes me glad I certified myself as a heathen not too long ago.
Another option would be pick a branch of Chrisitianity that goes by following the Bible as their authority.
Rob
Rob
@Spevacus Equally odd is: "The Counselor".
@Rob Heard of that one, never watched it. The mixed reviews always had me semi interested,
12:34
@Tinkeringbell Always seems odd to me that Christians say that the Old Testament no longer applies and then use it as a justification for e.g. homophobia.
Rob
Rob
It will appear on TV again someday.
@JohnDvorak If abstaining from fornication is necessary how has Christianity lasted so many generations?
That's for sex outside of marriage, not all of sex
@Mithical There's NT stuff on that too:
Newer translations use "sexual immorality"
12:36
> 26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.
@JohnDvorak It doesn't say that in the verse you quoted.
@DavidPostill Sex is necessary for reproductive purposes. There's still 'go forth and multiply'...
I wonder what people would think of modern reproductive medical science XD
@JohnDvorak So by retranslating you can remove restrictions - that doesn't seem according to the spirit of the original
The Greek original says "porneia", which does refer to unlawful sexual intercourse only.
I love when people base things on exact wordings of translations... /s
12:39
Pretty sure all religions forbid any kind of sex other than the kind that create children.
Fornication is generally consensual sexual intercourse between two people not married to each other. When one of the partners having consensual sexual intercourse is a married person, it is called adultery. For many people, the term carries an overtone of moral or religious disapproval, but the significance of sexual acts to which the term is applied varies between religions, societies and cultures. In modern usage, the term is often replaced with a more judgment-neutral terms like premarital sex or extramarital sex. == Etymology and usage == In the original Greek version of the New Testament,...
(be it solo, or done in ways that can't result in a baby.)
Rob
Rob
Test tube?
Forbidden by strict religion as far as I can tell, but I'm no expert.
Rob
Rob
Creates children without sex, what more could they want.
12:42
@Rob That was my thought :P
But I think that borders on 'playing God' however, I do not know of any scripture that specifically says 'thou shalt not do that'
hmm.. and as usual, it's complicated. @Rob
Rob
Rob
... and with practice (by the 3rd parties) it may create perfect children.
For someone's definition of perfect.
... eugenics? Ew.
Rob
Rob
Disease free and longer living.
12:44
By killing those who aren't?
Do you want to end up with Khan Noonien Singh? Because that's how you end up with Khan Noonien Singh.
Rob
Rob
You could also have disease ridden and shortliving; if you thought that best.
I don't.
somewhere in between sounds okay.
The best life is... living out of your best.
12:45
Sometimes sick, sometimes healthy, and an average lifespan.
(I don't know what I'm talking about)
@MetaAndrewT. No worries, the rest of the chat doesn't either :P
Translate pls :P
Rob
Rob
I now pronounce you ...
12:47
bad internet is bad...
@Tinkeringbell well Judaism forbids males to ejaculate unless it's, well, where it "should" be. So it pose a big problem. Guess that article I linked to covers it, didn't bother to read that much. :)
Rob
Rob
🤔
@ShadowWizardWearingMask I knew that ... It's still a base for many of the Christian views on procreation and sex too.
If you are referring to Onan, that one was killed for trying to squirm out of having a nephew. Not for masturbation.
(Note: I do not condone masturbation)
@Tinkeringbell oh, nice.... was under the impression Christianity allows more things.
12:49
I'm not sure what the man was called, to be honest.
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Christianity is one broad mess of things.
Some allow women to preach, others only males.
Some allow gays, others not
Some allow sex outside of marriage/for fun, others not.
it's not like Judaism is much better in that regard... unfortunately
Some worship Maria, others not ;)
@JohnDvorak well, the Hebrew word for masturbation is taken from that name, so...
and it became a proper noun, like onani...
@Mithical It makes it almost impossible to pick a community without starting your own.
12:51
Czech also used to use "onany". But it fell out of favor.
@MetaAndrewT. Oh, now I remember! Yeah, there's a word like that in Dutch too, I think..
Yep. Onanie :)
Indonesian has both, Japanese also has both. English... not so sure?
@MetaAndrewT. heh, no... in Hebrew the noun is onenut. Wonder how come other languages copied from Hebrew?
@ShadowWizardWearingMask I read that differently in English...
TIL it's "onanism". Sauce: en.wiktionary.org/wiki/onanism
12:53
@Mithical at least it's simple: all of what @Tink mentioned is forbidden. ;)
And my Firefox spellchecker does not think it is a word
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Depends. If you ask Reform, Conservative, and some Modern Orthodox... not it's not.
@JohnDvorak onanism? Yeah, Google thinks that's wrong too!
Maybe it fell out of favor already? :P
@Mithical well, I meant the strict/old religion, and yeah it's good even religion can change over time, in a way. :)
I had a Reform rabbi for my wedding.
12:55
@JohnDvorak It probably definitely falls in the category of 'wie zegt dat nog' XD
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Even Ultra-Orthodox is nowhere close to how things were done 2,000 years ago. :)
(which is a Dutch category of old-fashioned words almost no one still uses. Another biblical one would be 'jeremiëren' which happens to be one of grandma's favorites)
@JohnDvorak so if it comes out during sleep, it's not onanism?
Thinking about it, in Hebrew it also doesn't count and has a different word.
Seems so.
AFAIK, that's wet dream, involuntary action...
12:57
@MetaAndrewT. Is it always though? What about lucid dreaming? :P
That's cheating ;p
You still have to give your brother's wife a male child if he dies in a battle before having one.
Or have your shoe spat in...
Chalitzah is an option. ;)
Okay, now it's getting interesting...
What is that and why have I never heard of that before?
Ooh, TIL.
13:00
Halizah (or chalitzah; Hebrew: חליצה) is, under the biblical system of levirate marriage known as yibbum, the process by which a childless widow and a brother of her deceased husband may avoid the duty to marry. The process involves the widow making a declaration, taking off a shoe of the brother (i.e. her brother-in-law), and spitting on the floor. Through this ceremony, the brother and any other brothers are released from the obligation of marrying the woman for the purpose of conceiving a child which would be considered the progeny of the deceased man. The ceremony of chalitzah makes the widow...
@Mithical What are the major differences?
@Mithical they still perform those rituals like חליצה... no?
The most major would probably no animal sacrifices...
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Sure, yes
And תרנגול כפרות....
Which can be seen as animal sacrifice?
Though chicken is meant to be killed anyway, so not sure.
It's not like the קורבן תמיד is being offered nowadays :P
13:09
Yeah, because we don't have בית מקדש.
And small things like communal prayer being instituted instead
If we would have, surely people will want the animal sacrifice back as well.
oh there are people every year who try to go do the korban pesach at har habayit
Rob
Rob
Sing and dance, accompanied with air blown into the eye should be enough.
What's stopping the בית מקדש שלישי from being founded? @Mith any idea?
13:10
the space being occupied? :P
Well all that went over my head so I still don't know what the major differences are. Can you translate into English please? :)
and a lot of people believe that it's not up to us to build it; that's for the mashiach to do
@Mithical It can be built where the כנסת is... ;)
@DavidPostill animal sacrifice
What can or can't the orthodox Jew do or not do now cf 2000 years ago?
VTC: too broad...
13:11
@DavidPostill Have a cellphone
rofl
Actually, they have tons of restrictions on the phones.
As someone who was raised as a Christian... yeah, it's confusing. My family's view is that many rules in Old Testament are... being deprecated(?) by New Testament...
Rob
Rob
@ShadowWizardWearingMask How about a watch, with LTE?
but for some reason, the rules about non-kosher/haram food still stays...
@ShadowWizardWearingMask So before they could and now they can't?
13:14
I wonder if I should also try not eating pigs for a while
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Which makes me wonder... is there a Jewish equivalent of the Christian 'kliksafe', an ISP that blocks a lot of internet because it's not religious?
@Rob the restrictions are "low level", on the contents they consume, and when they consume it. The way the content is delivered is less relevant.
@Tinkeringbell Ha. Ha. Ha. Of course.
Internet Rimon is one, off the top of my head.
There's a special mobile OS for jews, that blocks a lot of stuff
So e.g. they'll have to remove a Smart Watch from their wrist during Shabbat and not watch it.
13:15
@DavidPostill More seriously: name something you associate with Orthodox Jewry and we'll see how it compares to "classical" ancient Judaism.
I think it's mandatory in Israel?
@JohnDvorak no
@JohnDvorak there's a Kosher Phone, but it's only a term. cellularisrael.com/content.php?cid=4
I suspect that using a smart watch would be allowed if it's in always-on mode and doesn't require a button press to light up.
hmm.... looks like Kosher Phone doesn't allow anything but calls, so based on that smart watch is forbidden.
(by Orthodox)
13:18
@Mithical OK, how about the eruv?
Rob
Rob
That was for Sha, ack his answer. --- Darn phone is possessed, chat window floats and jumps while trying to type.
@DavidPostill Which type?
Rob
Rob
@JohnDvorak How about activation by the inertia of wrist rotation, and voice dialing. :)
@Rob what was for Sha?
@Mithical The symbolic? ones made from string?
Rob
Rob
13:21
The line that was removed, and later retyped.
@Rob I see you removed a message, but can't see it retyped...
@Rob still a form of interaction
Rob
Rob
You are asking about it ...
Your next message is the one starting with "That was for Sha"...
Elevators don't even use pressure activation in shabbat mode. They're always on.
Rob
Rob
13:23
Do they stop at every floor?
@DavidPostill Those aren't symbolic. :) They essentially enclose everything so that it'll be a "private domain", allowing carrying from domain to domain. Without that, people aren't allowed to carry objects in public spaces or from private space to private space. That type of eruv was invented about 2,000 years ago, I think; before that people simply didn't carry.
Rob
Rob
They have skyscrapers ... 100's of floors ...
@Rob indeed, it will take a LOT of time to reach floor 100.
They're meant primarily for hospitals and such, so that they can still operate if needed.
13:24
But still, less time (and effort) than using the stairs...
@JohnDvorak hotels also, it's a must.
Why not use paternosters though?
@Mithical Ah, so that hasn't changed. I clearly picked a bad example :)
Rob
Rob
Place of birth: Elevator 3, west tower ...
2,000 years ago is also relatively recently... if you want to go for 5,000 years things are totally different. ;)
13:25
There are exceptions, e.g. when delivering the woman is allowed to use car to reach the hospital during Shabbat.
(so also can use the ordinary elevator)
Rob
Rob
Cheating.
nah, It's due to the life risk.
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Is her husband allowed to drive her?
@DavidPostill good question, not sure about it. @Mith?
pikuach nefesh for both her and the baby, he can break shabbat for them
Rob
Rob
More cheatin'
But if taking ambulance, is the husband allowed to come along?
Rob
Rob
What if he drives the ambulance?
13:28
@ShadowWizardWearingMask ... *shrugs* That I don't know; ask on Mi Yodeya or Judaism.CD?
Pretty sure that would fall under pikuach nefesh.

Yes, or anything sweet

> By now you’ve probably seen a video, or maybe several dozen videos, of incredibly sharp knives slicing through a pair of Crocs, toilet paper, a potted plant, raw chicken (??) and much more. They’re all cakes, which is either a herculean feat of food design or proof that we’ve lost our minds. The hyper-realistic encasings make the Everything Is Cake meme enough of an uncontroversial brain-teaser to be widely shared and instill further distrust in every household object.
I'll smoke whatever he's smoking.
Or are Mic folks always this hyperovermegadramatic?
Yeah yeah, I get the nihilistic message though. Or maybe the commentary on the current era?
I mean, I can distinguish crocs from cake crocs pretty easily by smell alone, I'd think. Unless the cake is made using smelly cheese....
smelly cheesecake? :P
Maybe they're fresh crocs?
Well, real crocs pretend they're not noticing you
Some alligators can run fast
14:38
@JourneymanGeek meh, the one with dogs is more creepy. :D
The main difference is between a crocodile and an alligator is that one will see you in a while, and one will see you later.
Is that Will Smith?
Uh
Is that a trick question.
14:45
which one?
Who's the other one?
@user400654 the taller one
@Mithical older version, he has been upgraded since then.
@JohnDvorak the King
The king of crappy nonhumor, more like.
But even that honor goes to Sandler
@M.A.R. nah he's actually good
For those not in the know, he's yet another one of the dummies who you're supposed to like because . . . they're the protagonist.
14:52
@M.A.R. who?
Talentless loser with a love interest way above his pay grade, who's unnaturally devoid of any sort of likeable trait
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Kevin James
Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of reasons to like Homer Simpson (the one before the 2000s at least).
Which makes him a humorous portrayal of the typical American dad.
These romcom heroes are good-for-nothing bachelors that even do some unethical crap that would get them arrested outside the romcom
They're not likeable, except because they're . . . smiling awkwardly? Oh my God, suddenly so relatable
@M.A.R. I talk about the actor himself, he's just good in what he's doing, IMO. ;)
@user400654 whaaaaaaat? No more toilets?
@ShadowWizardWearingMask I started out with that impression, but there's only so much crap you can watch from someone before you associate the terrible screenplay with terrible acting
He's not the most annoying, certainly. Sandler et al. would steal the honor every time.
But heck, on average, I like Jack Black way more. TJ Miller is awesome. Owen Wilson can be charming if he doesn't do that thing with his lips.
Meh, I don't watch so many movies/TV shows.
And most aren't comedy. :)

Pondering of the day: WTF does it mean to "present opinions as facts" other than to deflect answering the other party's questions?
I've almost exclusively seen it in arguments from the outrageously misguided side.
It does not mean anything else.
It feels like whataboutism posing as intellectual debate
@Tinkeringbell Please do not present your opinions as if they're facts. Thank you.
I don't know where I read it and I'm not going to trail through books now but:
"As soon as people start talking about the way you said something, the discussion is over"
I also want a sandwich.
That's just your opinion ;)

I have hormonal proof that I'm hungry
And I've been hungry consistently today
Motilin. Apparently isn't secreted when you've eaten
I don't know about that one, besides making you hungry, what does it do?

Alimentary tract, the 60-dollar word
Alimentary tube? Pipe?
Ah, so a laxative :P
I guess. I'm reading the textbook and half of what it's saying is "we do not currently understand the mechanism well enough"
