7:10 PM
@Somewhat pane what?

Pannenkoek, pannenkoek ... I see myself out ...

Oooh. Subtle put downs! :P

they certainly are. I hesitated a bit but I guess @ShadowWizard can handle it ...

Well... I hope so :) I think he can ;)

Otherwise it was nice knowing y'll

7:19 PM
Someone would have to be a real jellyfish to get rid of you for that :P

Yep, agree on that.

Let's see... Do we know any more that translate really well? :P

those things that grow on a tree?

Tak? :P ... meh. Only for females though

No, what the squirrels eat ...

7:22 PM
Ohhh... :P
Yeah, those are cool :)

I wanted to qualify myself, thank you.

@rene koek? Yup. Easy. eating all the koek
:D

@ShadowWizard Oh, just keep your waffle if you don't know what you're talking about :P

LOL!
This is real fun!

@rene nuts? What about them?

7:25 PM
I was sooooo waiting to make that one! :P
@ShadowWizard acorns :P

@Tinkeringbell pretty sure that is not what I think so we are all good. ;-)

You can try that on Bart.

OK!
@Bart you love koek?
Done.

@rene 'appelflap'... but that's apple turnover. Doesn't sound that good.

running away

7:28 PM
@Tinkeringbell well, that is laughable. More like sapperdeflap

@Tinkeringbell what about Holy Cow? 🐄

@ShadowWizard That's not Dutch :P
@rene Yeah but so is pancake?

@Tinkeringbell maybe in French? Isn't that a beignet

@rene Yeah, but beignets aren't appelflappen

true

7:29 PM
beignets are apple fritters
slimeball?
Although that doesn't sound innocent enough
a old cake! (for ladies)

Hairball. Yummy!
BTW back to previous discussion, in Dexter they say a lot "Jesus on a stick" instead of OMG. Is this also considered offensive for some?

i mean, i'm sure there's someone out there that would consider it offensive

that ^

just like there's people who consider requests for more information offensive

@KevinB Ehh... 'on a stick' is a bit more touchy I guess, in a sense that to me that seems like mocking the crucifiction
If that got flagged as unkind or rude/abusive, I'd delete it. I wouldn't do that with a request for information, unless that was made in a really rude way.

7:42 PM
i would as well, though i probably wouldn't outright delete "OMG" unless it just wasn't a necessary comment.

If the rest is okay, it might be edited out if flagged. It's... a tricky line to walk, always. You need to consider that what's offensive to you might not be to a larger population, and/or what seems perfectly fine to you might easily be seen as offensive to someone else.
As a mod, you still have a lot of deciding to do, even with the new CoC.

OMG could very well not be meant religiously at all.

@KevinB Even then, it could still offend people with a religious background.

i'd argue the majority of the time it isn't. but a comment containing that would likely not be a nice comment anyway

"omg thank you so much" ;)

7:46 PM
I mean... the fact that people find that offensive irritates me. but i don't go around flagging for it

What would OMG mean then? Because I know it to mean O My God or Oh My Gosh (that last one just being another way to say God)
@AdamLear That's no longer needed :P

:)

I might decline an unkind on that one but delete it anyway.

imo it has more to do with the message being sent than the words used in the message.

7:48 PM
@KevinB Ohhh. That's a tricky one too though!

i wouldn't use chat as good representation of comments left on questions/answers...

Those are comments

@KevinB That bot catches every comment posted on IPS since ... @Mith?

January

oh, it's the bots room
i don't understand how a site like ips can even exist within this network :shrug:

7:49 PM
(...hmm, doing that search inadvertently led me to finding a lot of comment to flag... BRB, making more work for@Tink)

@KevinB It's still a mystery to me too :P But it seems to be going a little bit better now, people have actually been moderating answers lately! :P
@Mithrandir I'm on sick leave. Give them to Em

I do think you'd need to be less lenient on those kinds of exclamations on a site like ips, or politics, or any other primarily opinion based site.

@KevinB Yep. I guess so. Still... I don't see the need for OMG's on a site like SO either. I hopefully can expect a programmer to have the intelligence and vocabulary to express themselves in other ways :P

i'd hope most would see the uselessness of even leaving comments that those would often be in, but it's commonplace. I'm all for deleting comments that fall under no longer needed... but validating a rude/not nice flag for a comment that is neither? that's absurd to me.
this is the internet, where people all over the world co-exist. What do we do about those who find it offensive for their religious outbursts like that to be silenced? consider their feelings on the matter unimportant or not genuine? where do you draw the line? just pick the side that is the most convenient?

Welcome to moderator life ;)

7:58 PM
i'd rather not give an inch to people being offended over such trivial things.

@KevinB To be honest, you'd usually look at what follows too. Like I said before, if someone flagged 'OMG, thanks!' as unkind, I'd decline it but still delete the comment as no longer needed. If someone flagged 'OMG, how can you be such a pancake' as unkind, I'd happily accept the flag.

Right. the latter would be accepted with or without OMG
that's basically the point i was making before

@KevinB Well, an OMG on it's own can be rude too.

it would be too short

@KevinB Okay, you got me there :P
Kinda forgot about that ;)

8:01 PM
There are ways around that...

Let's say it's a chat message then, getting an offensive flag ;)
To be honest though, I wouldn't really accept a flag on OMG for religious reasons I guess. I'd have to accept flags on the mention of every animal that's not halal either. (Just to give an absurd example)

yeah, i mean, in chat, it's a different beast
chat is weird

...heck, even explicit profanity is sometimes allowed to slip by in chat

Chat is one of the strangest things to moderate.
@Mithrandir flags. :P

(side note: this rabbit hole is deeper than I thought at first)

8:06 PM
yeah but chat flags don't come with any context. You could be having a perfectly fine conversation, but have something flagged out of context an hour later that looks horrible

@Mithrandir Do I need to look at the flag queue?

i'd hope mods look for context for those, but i know not all users do.

@Tinkeringbell eh, looks like someone else might be looking at it

@Mithrandir I'm going to go and help Em for a while ;)

lovely

8:21 PM
Done :D
(My part, at least XD)

...for now

Ehh. Keep the rest for tomorrow. I'll be working from home with time to spare :P
