02:00
So you want the community members to be involved in setting priorities or just notified of them?
@Quill Yeah, but we all know what happened to Clippy.
I think that's along the lines of what @hichris123 is saying
Er... the latter?
@KitZ.Fox He took hormone replacement pills and became Cortana
The former to some degree, but obviously that only works to a small extent.
It won't work, except maybe to start some kind of UAT/focus group built off membership.
02:02
And we all know that totally works great...
I'm going to state that with authority because this is exactly my kind of work.
SE isn't kickstarter; we don't really get regular updates on stuff, besides garnering feedback on progress.
But I think it is reasonable to request some insight on direction at least. What is the long-term plan? Where are we headed?
Problem is, then every user feels invited to share their opinion on it, and that's exhausting.
We don't know whether they have a wizz-team of ninja coders working on the core site making it absolutely fantastic, or whether they have bill the gardener doing maintenance
And frustrating.
@Quill Oh crap. I know there was something I was meant to finish last year.
02:05
@hichris123 is just asking whether we can be notified that stuff is actually progressing, and not just be pleasantly surprised every 6-8 weeks
or something similar
Right. I agreed with that idea.
Except in a way that prevents commenting.
@hichris123 This query is far from perfect but is at least a start at seeing what 's have been added recently.
Just make the build notes public. ffs, most of the community are devs. They ought to be able to read them.
Before you post your question or make an argument, you might first want to get an answer to the question "Are developers being pulled from current work and diverted to new projects?" first as a basis.
@KitZ.Fox Yes, that indeed.
@JasonC I asked. And... let's find the answer.
02:07
@JasonC I hate when people ask that question.
"There are three of us 100% dedicated to making sure Stack Overflow as a Q&A product continues to thrive and grow." - On the community team, this is great. I do however have to ask how many devs are involved with this push, as I imagine creating mockups for Teams, Documentation, and working on Careers also involves quite a few developers. — hichris123 Oct 22 '15 at 20:11
I didn't say it was a good question.
I just said it'd have to be the basis for anything more.
@hichris123 It varies. A significant effort is in all of those things, but we also have bandwidth to work on stuff that the community wants. Right now, we're working on making figuring out what happened to your flag much less confusing, overhauling the review history stuff so you can better see the longer-term effects you have on the site through review, overhauling the vote fraud scripts to be much smarter and a bunch of other stuff. As I indicated, I need to be more vocal about it. Constrained? Yeah. Starved? no. — Tim Post ♦ Oct 22 '15 at 20:16
Personally, I think this entire line of discussion is nonproductive.
Yes, Rome wasn't built in a day, but...
02:08
@JasonC It's not the right question though.
@JasonC Oh I doubt anything'll come of it. But one can dream.
It's not immediate, it's about keeping in mind for the future
[ SmokeDetector ] Offensive answer detected: How to set Grub Password by Four Chan on askubuntu.com

@SmokeDetector tpu- lol
02:09
It should be a question of resourcing and handling load. It doesn't have to do with project prioritization.
So it doesn't matter if devs are being pulled onto new projects.
SO is still kinda a startup.
I think I would have suggested "nuts and bolts" over "blood and guts" in this context.
Regional thing probably.
blood and guts is core, rather than nuts and bolts, which seem more pedantic / menial
Or I don't know my idioms. :P
02:11
@Kit Sure. But it was also lazy wording on my part. I don't really share the complaint here. I guess my real point was that you can't just out and ask "Is the blood and guts of Q&A moderation being forgotten?" without having a more concrete premise.
Blood and guts is the hill you die on. Nuts and bolts are the basic infrastructure.
Because it assumes that new projects are taking away from development time that could (and would) otherwise be spent improving "Q&A" features, and that assumption may not be correct. So you have to nail down that part first.
@JasonC More than I thought. But quite a few are on... more trivial matters, especially hats. Or careers.
@JasonC Yes. I agree with you there.
Or "we broke something important so we need to fix it fast"
02:12
Hats are not trivial! :P
@hichris123 Trivial to you.
@KitZ.Fox Yeah, SE makes money from Careers
@KitZ.Fox I don't think hats bring in revenue.
Well be clear when you say "trivial" because this word is often miscommunicated. There's "trivially useful" and there's "trivial to implement", which are different.
You don't want different people speaking different languages with that one.
@hichris123 hats = increased traffic = more ad revenue
so yes, hats bring in revenue
also I totally paid SE staff for Archie too, so there's that
02:16
That only benefited the one.
there's directly money making ventures and improvements that don't. IF SE is kinda a startup like you said, then they should focus on making money
that way they can hire more staff and work more on things, such as those improvements
like @KitZ.Fox said, Business responsibilities have to play a big part in managing workflow
And I'm sorry, @hichris123, if I am coming across as a total douche. I'm coming down from a first-day-back-at-work. User wants to assign priority 1 to all the tickets, and thinks I'm an asshole for 1. declaring that only one thing can be first and 2. that revenue stream is more important than fixing the font in that one section.
DOUUUUUUUUUCHE
I know. Sorry-not sorry.
02:19
Not-so-morning
Bagaduce.
They're both valid points, and both important. The fact-of-the-matter is that SE are in charge, and make the decisions. So you can let them do their thing, or you can click on Jobs and apply for a position there yourself
Sorry I don't speak Italian.
I should totally apply for a job there.
02:20
I am.
Don't apply for the same one as me.
squints menacingly
user202362
I mean ... why would someone apply to become a company poodle?
Oh it's on.
Become the site mascot.
Well, I'm a fox, not a poodle. If I can get an interview, I'm sure I can sell that.
user202362
02:22
you can't even use a poodle as a guard dog, at the best you could use a poodle to annoy your neighbours and passersby, but other than that ...
You wouldn't be scared of this poodle?
that thing would eat you whole and lick its fingers paws
You know that poodles aren't police dogs only because they are fluffy?
they're undercover police dogs
They bite harder than German shepards and make better guard dogs.
02:24
nobody expects the fuzz to actually be fuzzy
Really?
That's some good trivia. I knew chat rooms were good for something.
German shepards are traditionally a little more frightening though, so I'm sure that has an effect
Are they as loyal as German shepards?
@KitZ.Fox Nah, you seem... like a business person? ;P (that's a joke)
More like a mini-devil's advocate.
I'm not behaving well. I enthusiastically agree that there should be better communication about where things are.
02:26
And yes, that person doesn't seem to understand reality.
And I fervently disagree that it should invite any kind of discussion.
You gotta consider, though, SE is leaps and bounds ahead of most other companies as far as transparency goes, even if it isn't 100%.
@JasonC Ah true.
Because as soon as there is a "We're working on the one-boxing for Wikipedia", there will be 800 comments about how it should be 1200 different other things to be worked on instead.
@JasonC Yes, but it has slipped. Make SE great again? ;)
02:28
[ SmokeDetector ] Non-English link in answer: How to navigate to Location Services in App by SenKe on stackoverflow.com
@KitZ.Fox which is why they just say "it's done" instead
Well everything that starts out that way slips as it grows (PHRASING), that's natural. So consider that, and that SE has "slipped" less than so many other companies have slipped too.
@Quill Right, but build notes.
If that poorly worded sentence made any sense.
Speaking of Archer, I'm out for the evening.
Later.
02:29
Peace
@KitZ.Fox Yeah -- the bikeshedding part comes in. I'm more of talking about the 'we're thinking of building a second bathroom' or 'should we renovate the kitchen or the master bedroom first?' kind of discussions.
bye
See ya.
Season 7, still holding my breath.
@JasonC Again, fair statement. But you wish slipping wouldn't occur.
(again phrasing) :P
02:31
Lol
Well yeah.
I also wish I could sit down with Obama over dinner, walk him through healthcare.gov and watch him have an epiphany. But alas.
More like the sub-sub-sub contractor who did it...
Meh, the whole thing. Not just the site.
I don't even mind the crappy site. The high level fact is in 2012 I had an awesome health care plan. In 2013 they were driven out of the market by the changes and now my plan is 3x the cost with 1/3 the benefits. Fail.
As for the site, that contractor got fired a while back, thankfully.
I didn't get my taxes back, though.
Oops, I ranted.
you know what annoys me about America (as an Australian)
Everything?
the fact america doesn't use the .us domain extension
02:36

Like in Australia, .com.au, .edu.au, .gov.au.
Yeah. We got .com. HA HA.
I always found it weird, but you know, America!...
Al Gore invented that shit of course we got dibs.
@JasonC it's the koalas you gotta watch out for. I saw a dog mauled by a koala once, pretty full on

huh
02:50
@JasonC yeah, received your suggested edit
maybe it's an MSE thing
@JasonC WELCOME.
Although I could not suggest an edit to undo my suggested edit.
@JasonC If you pay for airfare...
From my time as a <2000 rep user, I seem to recall that the 6 char limit only applies to the body.
02:51
@hichris123 Are you a cute, single girl, 21-40?
Single tag edits and single character title edits were possible, IIRC
@JasonC Uhm... left up to the reader's imagination?
@JasonC Yes, he is; didn't you know? :P
Thanks, seems MSE-only rule
Sure, I'll fly you here and keep my eyes closed. Just talk in a high voice.
And at least shave.
02:54
as long as I can fly 1st class...
Probably. Most Delta flight first class upgrades drop to $98 24 hours before the flight leaves. I love that.

@hichris123 can be whatever beautiful creature they want to be. And they look stunning in those heels.
Little known fact.
I didn't know that. Something to keep in mind if I'm flying Delta. (of course, most flights I'd be on are less than $300 so...)
@JasonC that's a broad range
also the topic went away fairly fast

@TheGuywithTheTux get off vista
what about edits?
Apparently I can read it, but only when it's green from the "just sent" styling
And yes, I know vista sucks
It's the only computer I have access to right now
Edits do make it work temporarily
@hichris123 Not the upgrades exactly. If you wait to buy your tickets until 24 hours ahead, the first class prices drop to coach + $98.
brb, restrating
03:00
@TheGuywithTheTux I often got that problem too, just type chrome://restart
But depending on the flight you can get screwed, because some routes get super $$$ last minute, others drop way down.
@Quill It is a broad range.
Only because my current crush is 21.
Normally I'd say 30-40.
Okay, all better now
@JasonC you just gotta:
03:13
@JasonC ah.
@JasonC You're... 35?
34
I know I know.
03:26
It's your choice, not mine.
Well it doesn't matter, she lives far away. Also the age difference is weird.
She's not an option.
@JasonC 34 / 2 + 7 = 24 >= 21, so you should be fine age-wise.
That's what I figured.
@JasonC If you're willing to fly me out... why not for others? :P
03:41
That was funnier before the edit
Why do you think I edited?
