No, @JasonC, SE is entering the 'crap we need to make a profit' phase.

If SE want something to do so badly they could start with Area 51

That was planned.
Oh, say 3 years ago?

A: Next Generation of Area 51

Robert CartainoI have some more current thoughts on this post here: What's going on with Area 51? Yes, there is a next-generation Area 51 on the drawing board. It is very early in the design phase, so there's not really much to say about it. I wish I could indulge you in premature, wild speculation, but the...

A: What's going on with Area 51?

Robert CartainoFollowing up on Mad Scientist's recap of Area 51, there was a particularly salient point: The Area 51 process has significant flaws … but it still works somehow. … it still works somehow. I've been white-boarding a next-generation site-creation process on and off over several years, but w...

@hichris123 Citation needed. I don't see that in the FAQ on the post and can't identify a revenue stream there. All I see is things purporting to help me share something. Any theories why they'd keep that a secret?

user202362
I found a listing guide on Nasdaq, it's only 16 pages long :p

@JasonC Revenue stream = Careers. As @rene said...

Finally! I was already wondering how they were going to payback those $40 million investment money.

user202362
investment != debt

user202362
you only have to pay back debt, investment means equity

Right, but your investor isn't gonna be happy if you keep losing money...

12:26 AM
@hichris123 Any theories on why they'd keep that a secret in that list, which very clearly focuses on "things you want" and mentions nothing about increased revenue (which I suspect would actually gather a lot more user support)?
I would expect it to be in the list of e.g. "what problems does this solve". Wouldn't you?

@JasonC Well, of course, this is all a theory. So... shrug

There we go. That's all I wanted to hear. :P

user202362
My 2 cents is that the investor would want IPO. IPO means that you have to make certain amount of profit for 2-3 consective years. But as usual, there is always creative accounting.

That this is a theory? Or that I don't know what I'm talking about? ;P

Both.

12:29 AM
I freely admit to both.

Personally, if they were like "we are going to.turn this into Facebook but we have to to make money" I'd be like "well that's sort of a bummer but +10 more power to you".

You can get off your phone now @JasonC...

I could have said that more eloquently but you know what I mean.
No that would.mean I also.have to get off my bed.

(the "to.turn" gave it away)

Not an option.

12:31 AM
would.mean... also.have.

We talked about this in here before. Actually I'm getting better at avoiding the dots.

You're a millennial @JasonC. You should know how to type!

The old me would've typed like a hundred of them in this sentence alone.

As a more serious answer, @Jason... This is part of the initiative Tim laid out in this post, the gist of which is: take side projects we've tried in the past that've sorta worked and give them the proper SO treatment. Part of that is Careers integration, which is already in place (Jobs) but in a really, really hacky manner; the next step is to take the pieces and replace the blind Careers copies with stuff that's more generally-useful and less... weird and out of place. — Shog9 ♦ 57 secs ago

I just learned the word "giraffid". @tchrist I may graduate to 5th grade vocab soon.

And before you respond, "but this is weird and out of place", I just wanna say that's why this is on meta in the form of a mock-up and not on SO in the form of something that actually reflects tons of developer time.

Of course they have revenue, our tears during WB

I was going to say your face is weird and out of place but that works too.

@Shog9 The blood & guts of Q&A/moderation seems to have been... forgotten recently. Perhaps that's not true at all, but it seems that way. And remember... appearance is reality.

it's probably pretty easy to replace the src of all images on a page with javascript.

@hichris123 In their defence nothing has really been taken away from the QA stuff. Just... extra additions.

@JasonC Exactly -- note the lack thereof of additions on the Q&A side.

I was going to start a question on whether there is any correlation between people who tend to road rage & people who tend to rage on the SE sites. But I don't know the best SE site to put it ... any thoughts?

@telkitty Totally honestly, my gut says no correlation. It's a different kind of rage. But I may be biased. I live in a neighborhood dominated by a culture that values machismo and peacocking. Road rage serves a purpose here.

@Quill "Is copper foil really better than aluminum foil for blocking harmful mind control rays?"

> yep, the CIA/China have powerful enough gear to break through aluminium, these days you gotta use copper

user202362
I would think that it's more about passive aggressive rage - hiding behind the wheel or behind the monitor is the same

I don't mind Skeptics, it's Lifehacks that's a joke

1:05 AM
That's one way of looking at it. On the other hand it's territorial/physical rage vs intellectual rage. Different sources of self image.

@Telkitty Well, rage can be triggered by anything that makes a person feel suddenly powerless and humiliated.

@Telkitty I could imagine those who rage on SE potentially road raging, however not the reverse as much

Road rage here is not hiding behind the wheel lol.

Like bananas. Or sunshine.

It's more blocking a guy at an intersection, getting out, breaking his window and beating his ass.

1:06 AM
or downvotes
@JasonC that sounds more like organised crime
or grand theft auto online

No joke I saw a guy get out of his car at a red light and pull a knife on a tow truck driver that had cut him off on the street here about two months ago.
Then a pedestrian convinced the guy to settle down. He got back in the car. Then the tow truck raced passed him, cut HIM off, called the cops and started raging right back.
It was face palm city.

that happened around here recently, a guy got pushed backward and subsequently was hit by another car and died

That's pretty tragic.

yeah, except the news companies / facebook abused it like they usually do

1:09 AM
Meh just ignore that part. Sensationalization is just a normal thing you have to accept and shake your head at.
I got punched in the face by a driver once. I actually forgot about that.

We backed into a brand new truck on New Year's Eve.
Nicked up the bumper with the tow hitch.

I was driving a box truck and clipped this guys mirror who was double parked on a 1 lane street. Which... My fault. I didn't do any damage though just tapped it. So I opened the window said sorry and.moved on.
He raced past me on the sidewalk and cut me off, and, with his family and little kid in the car no less, got out, walked around, reached in and grabbed my shirt and took a swing.

The guy was livid, but I guess he decided that we were 1. appropriately chagrined and 2. less likely to turn in a drunk cop who was preparing to drive his brand new truck if he just backed down. It all ended up OK.

I ducked, he got madder and smashed my mirror with his fist.

Holy crap!

Then all these ... Spirited black ladies... Sitting in their front porch right there tore into the guy and he walked away.
It was rather glorious.

Nice.

when does the film adaptation come out?

Lol

I saw a video a few months ago from a dashboard cam of a guy that got carjacked
One of the carjackers pulled a pistol and when the driver got out
he accidentally hit the clip release button, and it went straight to the floor
he jumped back in the car and sped away

1:15 AM
But that's the thing. That dude probably wouldn't be an SE rager. But definitely a road rager. In his mind I had somehow diminished his manliness and he had to get it back in front of his family, physically. He wasn't black, I won't say what he was, but he was a stereotype. It's just a cultural thing.
@quill Haha
Fail
I love watching criminal fail videos on YouTube.
There's a classic, I'd find it if I wasn't on my phone in my bed (or am I). With some dude who steals some ladies purse in a mall and runs, and this other guy walking casually just roundhouse kicked him in the face when he ran past.

@KitZ.Fox I've been told that by around four different people. I should really... fix it somehow. >_<

Reversing the colors would help.
Maybe.

Well, then the doorknob wouldn't be... doorknob-colored.

Or if it were some other kind of stylized doorknob? Like a ... oval one?
@Doorknob Right, but you could be avant-garde that way.

Maybe I should just get rid of the connecty-thingy entirely

Maybe... if it gets answered by a reliable source. ;)

@JasonC Close enough.
I still don't understand the blood and guts though, @hichris123. Are you writing a Meta post for it?

I visited Montreal once in like 2001. I don't know what was going on there at the time, some big election. And I remember my friend wouldn't let me speak English in certain neighborhoods.

Yeah. Anglo.

It was apparently super tense at the time. She had to translate for me in all the convenience stores in her neighborhood so I wasn't discovered.

Again, perhaps that's not true, but see part a. No one knows that's not true. Therefore, it is true.
