12:08 AM
@Mark No problem, what's wrong with the tab handling by the way?

@Tim: new users often don't use it
then me, with my OCD, goes in and fixes them all

Tim
Ah yeah, improper indentation drives me crazy.

12:37 AM
@Mark @Tim Maybe you guys should add some letters from your last name; every time someone does an "@Mark" I get notifications in the SE box.
Star this post for great good and justice!

12:50 AM
Better plan: Everyone change their meta display name to "Mark C"

@MichaelMrozek You are a terrible person. Do you offer classes?

@PopularDemand I don't know how to teach something that comes so naturally and automatically

Wow, they really hosed the site this weekend.

@LanceRoberts Just because of the one long outage, or was there something else?

I feel better now

1:04 AM
How I would live to post this guy's IP, just to freak him out.

"I'm asking because I'm planning to do it. I know it's bad, but humans are selfish."

People like that greatly depress me

I wonder if people who answer that question can actually be liable.

I don't think non-attorneys can be held liable for any kind of legal advice.
He's pushed it too far, in the comments though. I feel better, he's just a troll.

@PopularDemand Yeah, didn't look well planned, and they should have figured out ahead of time how to deal with the time lapse.

time lapse?

1:28 AM
a lot of people got hosed for a day towards their fanatic and enthusiast badges

Q: Proposal: Free day in the visit log to account for the Oct 9th downtime

Nick CraverGiven the downtime for today (Oct 9th, 2010) due to the UPS Failure, I propose giving every user that visited on Oct 8th, 2010 a free entry in the visit log (or whatever the name may be) for Oct 9th, 2010. It shouldn't matter to other users (at least not for reasons I can think of, correct me ...

1:42 AM
not sure...my consecutive days are fine. of course, i was sleeping while the site was down

if i haven't been browsing and already seen the number on my profile go up, i'll do questions > tags > users > badges > unanswered > user profile to check number, lol

@Michael, yep, I actually hate the fanatic badge, because I have to check in to so many sites until I get those. I can't wait to not have to have every Meta site up.

1:57 AM
@MichaelMrozek Isn't that the answer to people who write scripts to just load the page and do nothing else?

I think it's the stupidest thing in the world for me to care about the fanatic badge on a Meta site, but that's the way addiction goes.

Q: I don't like SuperUser THAT Much! (Wrongly Reward Enthusiast Badge)

Chacha102So, the people on SuperUser are really awesome and I'm glad you guys are keeping that place full of information. However, I visited SuperUser today after my little plugin told me that I had visited SuperUser for 30 consecutive days. The thing is, I almost never visit SuperUser. So obviously I w...

@PopularDemand Possibly, but it also catches people who manually load the page and do nothing else
And it's not like you couldn't script it to download stackoverflow.com/questions/123456 instead

@MichaelMrozek Eh, Jeff keeps making sideways references to them checking for additional unspecified activity.
But I'm actually okay with this behavior, sometimes I have just loaded the main page and then wandered off to do something else; I don't feel like I really deserve the badge for that.

You've come a long way from "I'm ok with scripting it to get the badge" to "I don't feel checking the question list is enough" :)

2:06 AM
@MichaelMrozek Huh? I was okay with it?

I thought you were the one who was scripting it at some point. Maybe I'm thinking of someone else

@MichaelMrozek Not only am I not a fan, I'm not even smart enough to write such a script.
Though I can see the reasoning behind "if I'm willing to write a script to visit these sites, I deserve a badge for it!"

I just use FF and ReloadEvery to keep things going.

I'm sticking with the old-fashioned way. 71 and counting....

@LanceRoberts I think the mods there are already looking into it

thanks.

I would vote, but my paltry 101 reputation there does not impress

@LanceRoberts Whoa, I have close powers on Prog SE!
Hey, thanks for using Reg HQ! (@Lance)

@PopularDemand ...low blow :)

2:41 AM
@MichaelMrozek Heh, sorry, I actually broke my own rule and replied before reading the entire transcript that time.

I would encourage everyone to upvote my PSE posts, but I don't think I have any

@MichaelMrozek There isn't a single post on PSE authored by you which I haven't upvoted.

You are a true friend

@MichaelMrozek It's the least I could do for someone I respect so much.

This conversation has gotten dangerously sarcastic
@rchern Break out a backwards smiley so I can make fun of it, quick

2:49 AM
that's not nice
(;

@MichaelMrozek What do you mean? It really was the least I could do. I could have found a comment of yours to flag, perhaps, but that would still be more effort.

3:01 AM
@Pop, I keep Reg HQ open all day at work, hoping for a good reason to use my mini-super powers.

@LanceRoberts I'm glad someone appreciates my invention. But people aren't going to start visiting it regularly unless more people start posting to it, and people can't post without visiting. Serious chicken/egg situation.

I glance at it when I'm starting chat to see if anyone has posted in it recently, but other than that I don't usually stay in it

I keep a tab open for it, and also keep an eye on the line that shows the last post there (since I'm usually in this room).

@LanceRoberts I tend to rely on that line.

3:25 AM
it's funny, there was so much wrong with this guy's question (stackoverflow.com/questions/3903153/…) that all of us were overlooking a key point
the code was written in C

2 hours later…
5:42 AM
the answer system breaks down a bit when the poster accidentally adds a glaring error into the sample code posted
everybody answers the obvious thing while the real problem goes nearly unnoticed

6:08 AM
That's not a problem with the answer system but with human behavior

3 hours later…
9:21 AM
Morning, no one.

@AndyEshead Afternoon

@YiJiang: I hope your afternoon isn't as miserable as my morning :-)

9:48 AM

@Benjol Surely playing old text-based games would be just as frustrating, but much more fun ;)

@YiJiang, probably nostalgia, the bbc micro was my first computing experience

10:10 AM
hmm... I'm doing far too many evil things with JavaScript lately, there's no way I'm going to programmer heaven.

such as?

@JohntheSeagull Well, so far I'm using IE's window.execScript to execute 2 nested with blocks and an eval.
If that's not the epitome of JS evil, I don't know what is.

hello

@radp 晚上好,吃饭了吗?
Because, you know, sometimes even lolspk isn't exotic enough

Good morning everyone
@AndyEshead LOL. Too funny. I'm sure you have a good reason for such awfulness :-)

@YiJiang Same to you

@YiJiang What does that mean? :-)

12:20 PM
@radp Good evening, have you eaten (common Chinese greeting)

@TheUnhandledException I'm attempting to write a set of developer tools built purely from JavaScript + DOM for Windows Desktop Gadgets (which can't access IE's built-in tools)

question, how come the ubuntu site got it's own domain? is it an SE1.0 graduate?

@YiJiang I like that -- especially the part where having had lunch/dinner isn't taken for granted :)

@AndyEshead See, now that's the kind of redeeming work that will overcome all eval evilness :-)

12:22 PM
but yeah, I have eaten, thank you very much

if it's open-sourced of course;-)

@radp I don't think it's really that - the greeting is so common now that you say it habitually in informal settings

@Benjol What's the domain?

@TheUnhandledException Yeah, it will be when I get it to a near-complete state :-) The intention is to help developers, so open sourcing it seems like the right thing to do

12:23 PM
So much so that the traditional "Hello" 你好 actually sounds somewhat stiff

@YiJiang I can see that, e.g. "Ciao" originally was Venice-speak for "I'm your slave"

it's quick linked from the bottom of gaming (for example), but not yet from SO
I find it strange that there's not 'graduation ceremony' - I'm not sure there's anyway of finding out area51 alumni

@Benjol I thought the traditional graduation ceremony was a tweet from Jeff's tweeter account :)

@Benjol Well... that's very interesting and a little disturbing
We'll see how long it lasts I suppose

12:25 PM
It'll last for long @the

NothingToInstall.com still redirects to WebApps.stackexchange.com

if it changes, at this point, it's for ask.ubuntu.com

@TheUnhandledException, I don't see any reason it shouldn't last,
but as to why...

but given the technology stack behind SE I kinda see it hard to make that happen...

@TheUnhandledException This question gave me the idea ages ago:

@TheUnhandledException Not the community, that's for sure ;-)

12:28 PM
The same guys who took 94 days to realize Joel's NothingToInstall.com name sucks...

Anyways, nice design, as always.

Ubuntu's is probably the best so far.
Just look at their captcha image!

@Benjol It's designed by someone from Canonical's design team

@radp I love it! :-)

@YiJiang *in colllaboration with him following Ubuntu's (strict) design guidelines

12:29 PM
yeah, I saw.

@AndyEshead I know, this whole domain name issue is a heated one...

They followed the guidelines closely enough that the ubuntuforums guys, who are still on the previous brand identity, complained askubuntu.com masquerades as a site from Canonical

How far does community-run extend, and all that stuff

Have they fought out the battle around the whole commercial/FOSS debate yet?

Strangely, @RegDwight in the comments is right - stackexchange.com is rejecting askubuntu.com! Well, sort of... stackexchange.com/sites

12:31 PM
I certainly see the logic for having askubuntu.com

askubuntu is brilliant, good design, domain-name tied to the product it is for
However, I fear that the Linux crowd is entirely the wrong guys to do this for

@LasseVKarlsen I agree completly

There's already a vocal crowd that is against the whole SE system, commercial as it is
Next thing you know, you're going to have upward of 20 different sites built on various FOSS clones

@LasseVKarlsen yeah, they should nail Microsoft first :)

Diluting all of the sites to the point of silliness
There's going to be one person + his friends on all the sites, and nobody is going to bother

12:34 PM
I got into a conversation with some woman at the grocery store yesterday, and she mentioned that she had a recipe from her mother which she could never get to be the way she remembered it. I mentioned she should go to cooking.stackexchange.com
Then after leaving the store I realize, she's never going to go there, how will she remember that domain name?

@TheUnhandledException, exactly
seasonedadvice is so much better

Most web users doesn't even know what a subdomain ia, let alone what stackexchange is

@LasseVKarlsen There's a thread on ubuntuforum.org running 10+ pages already on this exact topic
About askubuntu.com
Can't find the URL though, wait while I flip through the chat.askubuntu transcript

@Benjol Does it have one? Or is that just their top voted one? That's a really good one!

12:36 PM
For the wtf were they thinking series
It makes me miss mothereffingtextshadow.com

Some <del>flame wars</del> really interesting stuff going on down there

@TheUnhandledException, I think that in one of the numerous discussions, that was cited by some 'authority' as being one of the only decent domain name proposals in SE2.0

yeah, that badp guys is really annoying there

@radp Didn't we make him walk the plank yesterday... no wait, 22h ago?

12:38 PM
In defense of Gaming we did come up with some really good names. They were all taken, however. Mostly by WIPs or local guilds or parking sites that want 1k$ for the name.

@Benjol I've tried to find domain names for my own companies. That's more than "decent" :-)
@radp It's insanity, the state of the domain name market

@radp Gaming's domain discussion really broke down

@YiJiang Which one? There are four or five now ;D

@TheUnhandledException , ok, acceptable :)

But hey, like you said, surely everybody likes 8bitlavapwnsponieswafflesunicornbossstagesixseveneightforhelp.com

12:41 PM
@YiJiang Everyone likes a domain name with "ponies" in it. PONIES FTW!

@radp youhavedysentery.com !!?
That actually came up!?
Man are we hopeless

@YiJiang Probably some line from Nethack or something :D

12:46 PM
"fell onto a sink"??
"shot him/herself with a death ray"? Man, I hate it when I do that! F'ing ruins my day every time!

@radp What is that game? Okay, this is even worse than the "How do you know a corpse is safe to eat" question

@YiJiang nethack
It's the game that originated "How do you know a corpse is safe to eat" btw
and it's just one of many in its roguelike niche.

@YiJiang The ways to die @radp mentioned include "poisonous corpse" and "rotted [...] corpse", LOL

that's not counting cockatrice corpses...

La petite mort, French for "the little death", is a metaphor for orgasm. More widely, it can refer to the spiritual release that comes with orgasm, or a short period of melancholy or transcendence, as a result of the expenditure of the "life force". Literary critic Roland Barthes spoke of la petite mort as the chief objective of reading literature. He metaphorically used the concept to describe the feeling one should get when experiencing any great literature. A recent study of brain activation patterns using Positron Emission Tomography (PET) give some support to the experience of a sm...

I just thought the brief description of the symbols funny :)

Wow... that's some recommandation

@radp And death rays. Don't forget my beloved death rays!

@TheUnhandledException They don't actually have a character specific to them :/
they look like any other ray.

no, ----------- :)

Is that Ray Romano?

Package nethack is a virtual package provided by:
nethack-x11 3.4.3-12.1
nethack-qt 3.4.3-12.1
nethack-lisp 3.4.3-12.1
nethack-console 3.4.3-12.1
You should explicitly select one to install.
Hmmm...?

I'd use either the Windows gfx port, the Mac gfx port or the Linux console version
get nethack-console
the x11/qt/etc. ones suck.

I have to try this game sometime :-)

@radp Are you kidding me? Oregon Trail, man! I am officially getting old, having these "you kids these days" moments. (Actually it's probably because neither of you is an American but whatever.)

@PopularDemand HAHA I used to play that all the time in Middle School, LOL

The message I'm replying to is actually a while back, but man is it depressing.
I assumed "you have dysentery" was a universally known phrase!

These nutjobs probably don't even know about wagon-caulking.

I thought you were referring to the recent NetHack converstaion

Eh... my dog ate the corpse of a dead creature

Won't anyone think of the oxen?

I know!
Having a good day celebrating the "discoverer" of America @Popular?

@yij that's good, means that corpse would've been safe to eat

1:28 PM
@TheUnhandledException By being in the office, yes.
With a shiny new rental car parked outside.

I wouldn't be too picky on food btw, easy to starve.

In a nearly full parking lot... the other company in this building (which uses like 11/12ths of it) must not get Columbus Day off.

Fun... Shiny new rental car == work being done on yours?

@TheUnhandledException Yeah, finally getting the repairs done from when that guy hit me a month ago.
As a bonus, part of the damage was in a place where there were existing scratches, so I get that taken care of effectively for free.
I guess that cancels out the time I had to spend making the insurance claim and going to the body shop and whatnot.

My car just failed MOT :(

1:31 PM
MOT?

UK road worthyness test. Had a slight bump and the front headlight is out of alignment
Still a bastard tho

@PopularDemand Bonuses are good :-)

@AidenBell Gotcha.
@TheUnhandledException It was cosmetic damage only, I didn't really care.
Honestly it made my car easier to pick out in parking lots sometimes.
But I guess fixing is always good.

Any update on chat.stackoverflow.com since the other day?

@PopularDemand HAHA. My business partner has an Exterra and the bumpers are a cheap plastic which fade and look ugly

1:35 PM
@AidenBell Last I heard is that the private beta is open, but you probably already know that.

He's always joking about how hopefully someone will hit him and he can get them replaced :-)

@TheUnhandledException Hm, don't get on the road behind him, then.

@PopularDemand Damn, I was hoping to be in on that :-(

There wasn't really a good answer

@LasseVKarlsen That... is rather disturbing and likely to be illegal in any civilized area. I'm adding you to the mute list, too.

Snakes, emerging from a fountain as I tried to drink from it

@YiJiang At least you're putting the local memorial engravers' kids through college.

@TheUnhandledException Did you see my update to the project? even newer news: Another developer requested to join the project today.

Tim
I like how @Fosco's last message highlights chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/transcript/message/228472#228472

1:45 PM
Hah, the security of the chat site pre-beta access is just client-side javascript!

@Fosco I did see the email; Haven't read the word doc yet

@LasseVKarlsen Please stand by, Stack Exchange minutemen are en route to your location.

@Tim All my projects are magical blasts

The volunteer SO minutemen guard the servers around the clock
@PopularDemand IDK, works for me using: http://chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/transcript/message/222777#222777

@TheUnhandledException I still had the room number in there.

@PopularDemand Yeah, I think yours should have oneboxed also
Onebox (v) to be displayed in chatalicious goodness
Damn, the password is neither unicorn nor sixtoeightweeks :-(

1:51 PM
unicornify, 6-8 weeks, "pre-release password", tony the pony, tonythepony, none of those either
skeet, jon, jonskeet, jon skeet

eightToSixWaffles?
sightToEixWks?
Point is, you could keep doing this forever.
And if anyone's in there, you'll just be kicked out.

I bet the page will never actually let you in
They're just accumulating passwords, to later dump as a source of some fun

@PopularDemand But I want to be the only one in there... that way I can chat with... nobody... lol

@LasseVKarlsen Ha, it checks your OpenID, your password or lack thereof is irrelevant?

@LasseVKarlsen HA! That would be so awesome

1:55 PM
How lame is basecamp, I tried to signup with my OpenID and it says "that openid is already in use" for gmail ... probably because the endpoint is the same for everyone!
