Will let you know my thoughts if I see it

Tim
Perhaps rightfully so, heh.

@Tim True :-)

Eh, he can't be all bad.

I know. I meant @Tim was right in " Perhaps rightfully so"

Are your country's #laws stored in a public source code versioning system where they can be commented, diff'ed and blame'd? I thought so.

6:01 PM
Sorry for the 3 edits guys :-)

No further comment.

maybe "commented" is the wrong word for "commit message"

@radp That is a fine idea.

Hello

6:02 PM
OK. I'm getting out of here before The Social Network becomes a lame movie about chatting with nerds all day long ;-)

Hi

Board and Card Games is nearing private beta.

@TheUnhandledException This if anything else is The Antisocial Exchange™!

@radp Perhaps we'll make that the sequel :-)

I have a hard time understanding how it can become more than a repo of "clarify the rules of [game] for me" and "I like [game], recommend other games for me [closed]" questions.

6:03 PM
My profile says:
> last message -14 second ago
uhhhh
@balpha?
I think that's even more confirmation I need to get the hell outta here :-)

Did you post that exactly 14 seconds after reading it? If so, sounds like [status-bydesign] to me

The system knows what you're going to say, before you say it
That's a clear sign of being repetetitive

@LasseVKarlsen I saw people talking about that this weekend

It's the unique feature of the StackExchange™ QuasiOracular ChatPreviewer™

6:05 PM
@LasseVKarlsen Agreed. I think that's even more confirmation I need to get the hell outta here :-D

You already said that

the chat is running on two web servers. I assume the clocks are off by a few seconds
or @LasseVKarlsen is correct

@TheUnhandledException Dupe.

i'm gonna go with the latter

6:06 PM
You all missed the humor :-)
So like @PopularDemand I will now leave in a huff!!!!

cough

Q: Chat widget in ad space is predicting the future

Popular DemandI don't know if MSO Chat is an early implementation of Skynet, or if Aiden Bell is a bot, or what, but this just doesn't seem right to me: I like how the chat ad/widget tells me when the last message in a room was posted, but when it tells me about the next message, well, that's kinda creepy.

Apparently it's been deleted? That's a valid bug report!

i thought it was closed as dupe? o:

Jeff probably deleted it if it was, he deletes dupe bug reports a lot

@rchern If so, I don't remember that happening.
Argh, what is it a dupe of?

6:10 PM
I really need 10k on meta -_-
It's similar to this one I posted, but doesn't sound like the same thing:

Q: -1 seconds later in chat

Michael MrozekOn one of the meta chatrooms just now, I posted a link and then posted "..." a second later. For some reason, the second message inserted above the first, and a time difference message showed up informing me I'd posted the first -1 seconds after the second:

@MichaelMrozek Does look similar.

i'll search, hang on. i think i had left a comment

@rchern I don't think the comment is going to be in your history anymore if the post was deleted

@MichaelMrozek It's true.
That post isn't even in my history anymore.

i'm searching for the post i had linked to
i had viewed that question

6:12 PM
Argh, an insufficient number of people have gotten on board with my comment here:

A: Meta Raffle: When Will StackOverflow Reach One Million Questions?

Jon8:59:50 am GMT/BST | Wednesday, October 13, 2010 According to the current stats on the sites, with 3756 questions left and 1.65 questions per minute.

Ah. Take that, MSO

...what the heck. my chrome history goes from 9/30 to 10/10
nothing in between

The guesses on that post are surprisingly close; apparently SO's activity has stayed pretty consistent

@rchern You been drinking perhaps? :)

@rchern Well yeah, that week was....The Incident

6:15 PM
full history is there, but doing a search for meta.stackoverflow.com has the gap
anyways

Q: Just curious as to what causes negative time on the front page?

Sam152 Possible Duplicate: Was a question asked in the future? It looks like I am able to reach almost a minute (in some cases) into the future and see posts that haven't been made yet. This probably isn't the biggest priority right now, but I would be interested to hear what causes this bug.

:D Actually, 1 Oct was when NTI's domain got rolled back, so I wouldn't be surprised if you erased the next week or so from your history forever

hahaha

Anyone know why there is an envelope indicator when we have the SE indicator in the top left corner?
It seems superfluous.

because the envelope has been around for awhile

Tim
There's really no way that it could have been a duplicate of this question since clearly it's not [status-completed] if it re-broke.

6:17 PM
and the inbox is new?

Well, it's a dupe.
Dupe, dupe, dupe, I say!
Downvotes!
-1 on the SE inbox!

i wanted @PopularDemand's question closed as a dupe of what i linked to. unfortunately that got closed as a dupe and it is the 2nd step there that's the problem

I'm going to make a bajillion puppet accounts so I can get that envelope removed. It's been superseded! !!!

@Tim You say that as though it stops people from closing for that reason :). People close "the site is broken" posts as duplicates of posts from when the site was broken two years ago

Tim
@MichaelMrozek That's just silly. :P

6:19 PM
@Moshe And the "Does not have a bright future in the Stack Exchange world" award for the day goes to....

@PopularDemand - What did i do this time?

@Moshe Announced your intent to create, and a quote, "a bajillion," end quote, puppet accounts.

I just don't get it. The envelope tells me about updates my account, but so does the SE indicator. Now what?

dude @Moshe chill heh
closes @Moshe as a dupe

@PopularDemand - Okay, true. This should be more like gmail - I want an "off the record button".
@rchern - hehe - (don't quote me on this:)

(I'm waiting for a star to my backwards smiley)
Um ... ? Anyone ... ?

begging for a star is lame (;

Please do not star this post everyone. It would sadden me greatly

@Moshe What's an "off the record button"?

Reverse social engineering failed

6:24 PM
@MichaelMrozek Devious genius! I obviously can't give in to your star plea, but I also want you to be saddened!

@rchern @MichaelMrozek - Ok, you are really tempting me to make puppet account bajllion and one.

@PopularDemand Go upvote a post of rchern's on MSO; that saddens me almost as much as getting undeserved stars

@PopularDemand - Ever used Gmail's built in chat?

@Moshe A couple times.

6:25 PM
@MichaelMrozek o:

@MichaelMrozek Serial upvoted!

@PopularDemand - they have an off the record button. IT stops Gmail form recording your conversations.
@rchern - and meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/67285/isnt-the-envelope-a-dupe I created it before. And I labeled the feature as a dupe.

ugh @Moshe, you created a question even though i told you it was a dupe?
and then i went and searched out the dupes?
BLAH on you ):
hehe

@rchern -1 for this reason (@Moshe)

Hehe
Hi

6:27 PM
@rchern The fact that the title itself has "dupe" in it has made my day

Tim
'Ello @jjnguy

@rchern I repeat - the SE administrators are guilty of duping, hence we are all forgiven for following their lead.

I didn't even bother to add the links to my comment on your question. Just linked to my chat message
ha

@moshe, so, If a president cheats on his wife, we can to?

@jjnguy - No. Really, really, stupid comparison.

6:28 PM
@Moshe Oh, I set my GMail chat to "Never save chat history. - Your chats will never be saved or searchable in your Gmail account." on day one.

@PopularDemand - o ok.

Hello JJN, who is a GUY.

@Moshe Well, you say that the leaders of the site do something, so we should be able to do it too
@PopularDemand Hi

balpha and I are a close-voting duo

Q: Isn't the envelope a dupe?

Moshe Possible Duplicate: Global Inbox and Envelope Double Notify Me The envelope indicator is a dupe as of StackExchange 2.0. It should be removed, because the "StackExchange" button on the top right duplicates functionality.

@jjnguy the leaders here demand no duping yet they are doing so. The president never said anything about marriage.
@jjnguy The difference is that one is hypocritcal and one is not.

6:29 PM
@Moshe, in the future i'm going to require paypal payments prior to searching things for you (;

New MSO Law: @MichaelMrozek:@balpha::Robin:Batman

well, it would have been just too ironic for me to close Ian's question all by myself @MichaelMrozek

@PopularDemand I'd object to being Robin, but he's casting 4 times the votes I am, so that's probably accurate :)

@Moshe Hmmm, I disagree. But, that's fine....moving on.

@rchern - I will start charging parking tickets for all your backwards smileys.

6:30 PM
my smileys aren't backwards though.

I'm weirdly used to the backwards smiley now. Phase one of rchern's plan is complete

@Moshe The mere fact that you insist on the word "leaders" prevents me from taking any of this seriously

It's when I start seeing ":)" and thinking "wait, that looks wrong" that I know it's too late for me

(also called the EXP effect)

@MichaelMrozek, (:
@MichaelMrozek all good. @balpha's already in the support group (:

6:31 PM
@balpha I was just using @jjnguy's term. I dind't say that, he did.

This whole argument spiraled out of control ages ago. You shouldn't post duplicates. SO mods might by mistake, but I doubt they do it intentionally, and you shouldn't either. If you post one by mistake, it's fine, don't worry about it

@MichaelMrozek - My point is that there is a dupe feature on the site.

It's not completely duplicative.

@Moshe, it's not a dupe. There is just slightly overlapping functionality.

@LanceRoberts +1

Tim
6:32 PM
@LanceRoberts Heh, I was just going to say that. :)

The envelope does more than the Global Inbox.

I already said that in my comment to his question

True.

And, the Global Inbox does more than the envelope too

@jjnguy So flag LanceRoberts as a dupe ;-)

6:33 PM
I do wish they could get the Global Inbox to update itself, I keep having to clear it.

Ah, we really need more main-site-esque features here in chat. Closing as dupe... voting on messages... voting on other people's votes on messages....

Flagged

@MichaelMrozek I hope you're sad now...

Q: Autcomplete @<name> in SO?

MosheCan we get @ autocomplete in comments on SO, like in the chat sites? Please?

@PopularDemand how do you "close" a chat message? stick it to the end of the transcript? The bottom will be full of "chatiment" (chat-sediment) messages.

@Moshe I bet that's a dupe too

6:36 PM
@jjnguy I searched. Really, I did.

@jjnguy It is, I'm searching now

Ugh.

Tim
That's at least a partial dupe of the ([status-declined]?) "Reply to comments" question.

Please share your search terms with me.

@Moshe I'm not accusing you. I couldn't find it either.
I'm just guessing

6:36 PM
@Tim Gee, thanks. Link please?

I'm having trouble too, so maybe it's not. I swore I'd seen it before
I think I was thinking of adding "reply" links next to each comment

Refresh, kids.

Ah well, it seems y'all hate me... :'( sniffle.
@PopularDemand ?

Tim
@MichaelMrozek Yeah, that's here: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/4798/…

@PopularDemand Oh, you win

6:38 PM
@MichaelMrozek ??

@MichaelMrozek I will treasure the memory of this day forever.

@PopularDemand I get that a lot
This is confusing, I voted to close and balpha didn't back me up. What are we supposed to do, get five normal users to close? I can't go back to that

What to do when a potential client asks when "you are available to come meet with me to discuss..."?

Set up a meeting?

@Moshe Closing is just routine maintenance to keep information in the right place. It doesn't mean we hate you.

6:41 PM
@PopularDemand I was joking. And - I was just teasing the envelope and SE indicator (which needs a better name, btw) as being "dupes", because "dupe" has become somewhat of a buzzword.

Don't let that dupe you

@MichaelMrozek Congrats, you've been promoted to Nightwing.

@LasseVKarlsen - I'm just concerned over the "you come to me" attitude. I know the person and I need to make sure that the client doesn't begin by making too many demands. That's how freelancing ends up...
You can do this right?
That's simple to implement, yes?
Rule of thumb: If it looks easy - its not. If it sounds crazy - there's a framework for it.

I never do any freelance work outside my regular job unless I have a detailed (and I mean detailed) specification

@Moshe Am I the only one annoyed with the use of "dupe" as an abbreviation for "duplicate"?

6:44 PM
@shog9 - nope. Me too, hence the jabbing of the envelope.

@Shog9 What do you use, dup? Or just nothing?

@Shog9 Yup...

And I never sign off on any freelance work until I have gotten the specification up as tasks, with estimates, signed off on by the client

@MichaelMrozek Try Dupe... lic... ate...

@MichaelMrozek dup

6:45 PM
@Moshe I don't know how you're pronouncing "dupe", but that sounds exactly right. It's the same as "dup"

Duplicate
Hmmm, too much typing

And since I always add a provisional clause that gives me the right to terminate any job should the job deviate from the specification, usually the client either goes somewhere else (which is fine by me), or the keep a good eye on the details

@MichaelMrozek yeah, but "dupe" has... unfortunate connotations

Except "dup" looks like you could pronounce it "d-up", which is probably why people started adding the -e

@MichaelMrozek dupe - pronounced [Doop] (rhymes with poop)

6:46 PM
@Moshe And is that not the first syllable in duplicate?

Hush
here he comes, silence

?
@MichaelMrozek So, it is.
I am more annoyed that people spend more time policing and less time answering each other.
Enough with the word Dupe.
There should be enhancement of the search results page to avoid dupes.

I just sent a thousand-word email to the client I'm basically firing.
Maybe I should've just sent a picture of me giving them the finger.

@Fosco !

Google has millions of results and they never tell anybody to step down because of a similar result.

6:48 PM
that picture would be worth a thousand words...so yeah...you should've

I was halfway through a reply saying pretty much exactly that.

^__^

@Moshe We spend plenty of time answering, don't worry, but many of us prefer maintenance stuff, and they both need to happen

@Fosco what, and give up the ability to annoy them with 1K words?

@rchern thanks for getting it :)

6:49 PM
@Shog9 The 1000 words could've been the alt text.

@Fosco - can we see the email? (Remove the identifiable stuff, of course.)

hmm... maybe.. i should redact the names

@Fosco, I'm here for ya! (:

one sec.

@PopularDemand who reads alt text? (well, blind people I guess... Is your client blind, Fosco?)

6:50 PM
@Shog9 Probably.
@Shog9 Me, if the image was generated by Randall Munroe.

The obvious compromise would have been to create ASCII art from your 1K words, thereby accomplishing both goals.

@Shog9 @PopularDemand Nope or @Fosco wouldn't have bothered suggesting an image.
Don't search engines and screen readers read blind text?

@PopularDemand You use a browser that renders alt text? Or you view source on XKCD...?

@Shog9 That's what I was thinking. Or changing the gray level of each character to draw a picture

@MichaelMrozek Even better!
@Moshe I figured it even less likely that fosco's client was a search engine, but I guess that is a possibility.

6:51 PM
In UTF-16, it's a picture; in ASCII, it's a diatribe.

Q: Consider changing Beta Browser policy for IE 9.

jjnguyThe policy has been, "We don't support beta browsers." That seems reasonable to me. However, SO is advertising for IE9 beta. I think the site should look and act correct on a browser that itself is advertising for.

Discuss...

> SO is advertising for IE9 beta

6:55 PM

As in, there are ads on SO for IE9 beta?

@jjnguy - Yea, i do hear that, but is IE paying for ad space? If yes than it makes no difference.

@LasseVKarlsen You know, in @balpha's chat, there is a "stab another user in the face remotely" feature. Just sayin'.

Tim
I guess he meant this?

6:56 PM
@Tim - yes, i think so too.
Is that ad space paid for by MS?

I don't think I've ever seen a browser advertise using hardware acceleration before. I think that worries me

@Tim yay. Now IE can peg my CP and GPU while rendering Flash ads. I'm... so... happy...
2

Just say: The views of the Advertisers do not necessarily reflect those of SO." and then we can stick with the no beta browsers rule.

Only a couple more years now, and browsers are the same as they envisioned back in the 80's or whatever, back when Johnny Mnemonic was made

Hi Hal,

I wanted to re-cap what we discussed at our meeting on Friday and state a few things.. please make sure the parties involved are informed.

The meeting was arranged because of my concerns that development work items requested by Guido (your client) and confirmed by Antiquated Apps are not included in the contract between Antiquated Apps and myself. This had been a concern of mine for some time, but I had been completing his requests as a sign of good faith. The contract included only the following requirements: 1. A web application supporting a users system with registration an

Tim
@Shog9 It's only fitting that your entire computer get to share your pain.

@Fosco - ok.
I assume that the Antiquated apps is the same?

yes any name is fake
i doubt antiquated apps would be a good brand :)
might be a hit in amish country, though.
