@PopularDemand I've got nothing, I just used a bookmarklet to shoot the password form. Which weirdly didn't somehow let me in

@MichaelMrozek I love that bookmarklet. Have a star :-)

I get the feeling I shouldn't touch that link at work.

Tim
@MichaelMrozek Hahah, that's great

@PopularDemand - SFW

@PopularDemand Dooooooo Itttttt

2:03 PM
@AidenBell Does it just install that asteroids-looking thing?

@PopularDemand Yes

Just some JS to shoot your dom

Allows you to shoot up any page

I wouldn't even put that on my personal machine.

Not an install thing

2:04 PM
Computers like to become slow around me, I don't need to give them any reasons.

It's not permanent @Popular :-)

<3

Fourth death... I really am generating a lot of tombstones

@TheUnhandledException - We're being wound up lol

@YiJiang What killed you this time?
@AidenBell Happens to me a lot ;-)

2:05 PM
@TheUnhandledException I was a tourist, and a jackal killed me

Jackals kills tourists

Those hawaiian shirts do nothing man!

exit (woops, that was for cmd :))

Everybody knows that

@YiJiang Ouch.

2:05 PM
@TheUnhandledException - Thought, that script adds JS to the dom of the current page ... seems like an attack vector to me

@YiJiang Those Hawaiian shirts are the reason they killed you ;-)

bye folks, sun is shining, I'm outer here :)

@yij, it's okay, many need 1+ year to win...

Later @Benjol

@TheUnhandledException even though that link is safe, could well easily be abused

2:06 PM
oh, and tourist is maybe the hardest class out there...

@AidenBell True

If it can shoot up my gmail dom it can read it lol

Especially if you use the death ray on yourself.

What's the OP trying to say here?

Q: ux restrictions in stackoverflow

deepakwhat ux decisions were made with stackoverflow. There was this meme running around that the design of stackoverflow is to restrict certain types of actions. But it has a nice integrated experience and have not felt such a restriction ever. by ux decision i mean: 1) the automatic badges and findi...

ah, deepak

2:08 PM
I'm halfway through editing it, but the numbered list just doesn't parse.

@PopularDemand ux -> ui maybe...?
Maybe "user experience"?

@AidenBell New account; sockpuppet, you think?

> There was this meme running around that the design of stackoverflow is to restrict certain types of actions

'oh hi, i can has reps?'

I don't get that

2:09 PM
@TheUnhandledException User experience was what I thought when I answered that question

@TheUnhandledException I think so.

I suspect that's it

that's what he meant really

@TheUnhandledException Assuming he meant a large number of recent complaints

@PopularDemand - Not one to badmouth, but I would take anything he posts with critical gaze
I answered anyway lol

2:26 PM
@radp Is this something that the OP probably doesn't want to be posting?

Q: Download file from java application

GiovanniHi I need some help to download a file from my java application. The URL is "http://uif.bancaditalia.it/UICFEWebroot/QueryOneDateAllCur?lang=ita&rate=0&initDay=11&initMonth=10&initYear=2010&refCur=euro&R1=csv" I try using this code but the result is an empty file URL ur...

I ask because I see "bancaditalia.it" which I assume is the possibly-nationalized Bank of Italy.

@PopularDemand @radp The official site of Italy's central bank - Banca d'Italia
@PopularDemand - Removed, not relevant to question anyway

@AidenBell Fair enough. Where is @radp, anyways? Could it be... Chat.SO.com?

@PopularDemand - Sneaky
@PopularDemand - Look at the icons, something fishy goin on

Died again...
I think I'm getting better at this
Made it to level 4 before dying

Is that the "you fell down a hole" game

2:34 PM
@AidenBell What icons?

@PopularDemand - nm.. the avitars

Tim
Oh look, it's @Feeds

What the heck is that?

Hey @Feeds, why won't you return my messages?
2 days ago, by balpha
ah, I know why feeds showed up

Tim
Someone in here is poking around the transcripts...for shame, examining the historical underbelly of the channel and whatnot.

2:38 PM
@Tim Indeed. I propose that the offender be punished by being forced to read said historical underbelly.

Tim
@PopularDemand I second that motion

The iPC OSX spin is lightning quick on QEmu/KVM

@PopularDemand @Tim ah ok thanks.. I see now.

g'morning

@rchern - hello :)

2:42 PM
Hi @rchern

@rchern Look who's back from paradise.

paradise?

Tim
We know you've been in Chat.SO, don't lie.

@rchern Someone earlier assumed that you were hanging out in Chat.SO.com and you were too good for us; I'm just running with it.

um, what?

2:43 PM
nonchalant eh

chat.so hasn't been released has it?

Tim
@AidenBell or @LasseVKarlsen said you gained access to Chat.SO somehow, I think.

@Tim - Ah don't push it my way

I think we were just assuming that's where she was since she wasn't here.

2:44 PM
It's been a ruckus on here over chat.so invites

Morning @rchern

why would i get an invite lol

@rchern Sure, feign ignorance

LOL

You're already a member, we know it

2:46 PM
you're all nut cases ):

You slinked into the #3 chat user position over the weekend :-D

Tim
I thought that was already a well-established fact.

@rchern You're only realizing this now??

! The password must be sdrawkcab!

2:47 PM
@TheUnhandledException, just stating the obvious...
(:

@rchern you're our leader :)

hehe

woah now patients, we have only conjecture

Tim
@Fosco But despite that, we won't create an Area 51 proposal for you..
(and to not confuse @Fosco, that was a continuation of that message, not a reply..to you....yeah.)

@AidenBell Without the premise of "@rchern has been in Chat.SO and is lying about it," we have no topic to spew worthless words forth about.

2:50 PM
@PopularDemand Really? has it come to that? :-)

Tim
@PopularDemand I was thinking that it was an anagram of the first letters of all of the developer's first names

@Tim Or perhaps "nearforest."

Tim
It's multifactor authentication, since it requires us to be both smart and not lazy.

A: SO community sarcasm

balphaObligatory Simpsons reference: User420815: whats code 4 mking game w/ super unicorns plz help Neil Fatvalue: Bravo, that's a great question. Spoel Jolsky: Oh, isn't that sweet. Even Neil's adding his kudos! Neil Fatvalue: I was being sarcastic! Spoel Jolsky: You were? Neil Fatvalue:...

why are you so anxious to get in?

2:51 PM
I find it ironic that we all want in there so badly, when once we get there, we'd all be back where we started... here, just with a different domain name, still wondering what to talk about :-)
3

Tim
Hmm, or..."electricity".

@rchern - So I can create a Python chatroom before anyone else

@rchern I want to create the PHP room, and re-create the Roach Motel

@TheUnhandledException Speak for yourself. I have minimal interest in Chat.SO.

@TheUnhandledException - Deal

2:53 PM
heh
so, other than an obsession with chat.so...what's up? heh

I want the ability to make chat rooms about SO questions. Also I figure the general room there will be more exclusive, so I won't be forced to mingle with you people
@rchern I don't remember much before I started trying to guess the chat.SO password

@rchern - Werkzeug.DebuggedApplication is cool - that's about it

Tim
Not much on my end...Just coming to the realization that it's Monday, which marks the end to a relatively unproductive weekend.

@PopularDemand I'm hoping it will drive more traffic to The Roach Motel
@MichaelMrozek Yes, I'm anxious for that too

@rchern That's pretty much been the whole day for these jokers.

2:56 PM
@rchern My goal for today is to get XMPP chat Read access working

Tim
@PopularDemand Don't forget @YiJiang's multiple deaths

@PopularDemand started it, talking smack about @rchern

@PopularDemand Because you're too busy with that "work" crap ;-)

@MichaelMrozek You'll do it anyways, though, because it's harder to feel superior when you're among a more elite crowd.

hey now, no smack about me allowed!
chat rule #1 (:

2:57 PM
;)
oh nethack was mentioned

@rchern Damn, now I need to give up chat ;)

@AidenBell Cite your source or it didn't happen.

@PopularDemand Yeah I started it!

@PopularDemand Cite yours or it did

o:
is this when i should grab some popcorn and a front row seat to watch the ensuing fight?

I'll bet the top 3 chat users got in. Which is why @rchern isn't here now, she's over there...

status-popcorn-overflow

@AidenBell AFAIK that's when the rchern smack started
today that is ;-)

@TheUnhandledException - Nice citation

3:01 PM
@PopularDemand Citation proxied

@TheUnhandledException |:

hehe ... I haven't slept ... quite excitable

@rchern Sowwy... that's the price you pay for being on meta chat XD

Tim
@AidenBell We've seen the things that come out of your head when you do sleep...are you sure that was a wise decision?

hello

3:03 PM
@Chacha102 is here, everyone PARTY!

@Chacha102 Hello.

@Chacha102 - Ah, my favorite person

Tim
Hello @Chacha102

status-PARTY

@Chacha102 do YOU have the password?

3:03 PM
@TheUnhandledException - Subtle

which password?

nonchalant eh

@Chacha102 Sure. Pretend you don't know.
;-)

You people aren't going to give this up, are you?

@Chacha102 Exactly. winks conspiratorially

Tim
3:04 PM
@PopularDemand At this rate I have a feeling it's going to be a long day in chat..

@MichaelMrozek is the instigator

@PopularDemand Actually I'm keeping it up mostly to see your reation, at this point :-)

Goodbye, then.

I gave up on it for my own sake a long time ago

wow

3:04 PM
Yikes

I wonder where he has gone

I have to assume that his leaving was for dramatic effect

That was a storm out

I don't think I would have offended him so easily.
If I did offend you I'm sorry @PopularDemand! I really was just kidding

He is watching the transcript ...
ah - im worn out

3:06 PM
@AidenBell You leaving us too?

@Chacha102 - Hows things?
@TheUnhandledException - Na, im harcore like that

status-hardcore

I'm not sure discussing the password to the other chat is somehow less intelligent discourse than what normally goes on in here
But I could post a couple xkcd pictures if that would help make everyone feel better

Tim
Hmm, I seem to be failing miserably on designing this database schema. Anyone want to assume control of hands and get the job done so I can move on to code?

@Tim Post the root password to your database and we'll take care of it

3:09 PM
@Tim - What's it for?

Tim
@MichaelMrozek Ah, excellent

@Tim Anything we can help with?

@Tim doesn't like it cozy

What is this password you speak of?

chat.stackoverflow.com

3:12 PM
Is it a new meme or something?

@Chacha102 No, it's SO chat, in private beta
> Pre-Release Access to chat.stackoverflow.com / Please enter the pre-release password to try this site:

Ah

Tim
@AidenBell, @TheUnhandledException Basically we have a process that examines tabular data and produces error messages, and we need to store those messages for reporting purposes. The messages have an ID corresponding to a rule, and are specific to a particular source of data.

Tim
The actual data that they look at needs to be recorded as part of the reporting process though, and the data examined is not consistent across all data sources.

3:14 PM
So, someone needs to get in So Chat and make my tavern...

Tim
(or rules, etc.)
Each time the process is run, 40,000+ messages could easily be generated.

Tim
But the data that they're reporting on might be identical, etc.

Will the error messages be unique?
or will there be a fixed set of error messages?

@Chacha102 - Taverntastic

3:15 PM
@Chacha102 And my hotel

Tim
The error messages are almost consistent across a given rule ID

"The actual data that they look at needs to be recorded as part of the reporting process though"

@Tim Define: almost
:-)

So, you want to save it as-was when th error was generated?

Tim
@AidenBell Yep. We don't store the whole data, so we can't reference it post-validation.

3:17 PM
How big is the row the error refences, typically?

Tim
@TheUnhandledException A given rule ID will almost always have the same message, but there are rules that have the same rule ID but operate on a different column of data. However, everything that operates on the same column with the same rule ID will have the same message.
It's also reasonable to reference the definition of the rule, which is non-specific to the column

Can the error messge be normalized into a format string or similar?
Also, data snapshot, is serialization+hash an option so multiple errors on same data reference the same snapshot?

g'evening @Diago

@rchern Ello

Tim
@AidenBell Yeah, in the sense that the definition of the rule is stored in a separate table with a message that is made more specific by the validation process.

3:19 PM
@Diago - If you have one, don't tell anyone.

@AidenBell I was going to suggest that also

@AidenBell Huh?

so maybe three tables: errors, error_messages, and error_data

@Diago - Exactly

@Diago, do yourself a favor...ignore them! (;

3:21 PM
errors contains the ID, date/time, id of an error message and ID of data
and anything else specific to an error

@TheUnhandledException Depends on the data being stored, creating a dead-row in the table might be better than a snapshot ... depends on expense/size etc

That way many error s can refer to a single row of error_data
@AidenBell True

@rchern Like I always do anyway? You know I only come here for your and @PopularDemand's company :P

I am not a DB design expert, I've created many DB schemas before, but I have much to learn still
@Diago I scared him off :-(

@TheUnhandledException All I know is trying to do it by chat isn't cool

3:23 PM
@Diago, ha

@TheUnhandledException Now why did you go do a stupid thing like that?
@rchern I will get to understand you. I will get to understand you I am not going to say when. But I can keep hoping :P

o:

@Diago I don't know! I feel badly I upset @PopularDemand :-(
@AidenBell Sorry, what do you mean by this?

@Diago @TheUnhandledException is clearly evil.

Tim
I guess the problem I've been struggling with is that I need to record the records in the original data that the error occurs on with specific data, and I want to avoid putting too much in the database due to the millions and millions of errors that will have to be stored, heh.

3:25 PM
@rchern Sad, but true

@TheUnhandledException Well since I don't read transcripts I am not going to try and track that one down
@rchern More or less evil then you :P

@Tim Well, that's a conundrum. That's why I suggested putting the data in a separate table

but i'm not evil.

@rchern Uhuh. And I am the tooth fairy.

You people aren't going to give this up, are you?

3:26 PM
doesn't the bright halo hovering above my head make that obvious? (:

@PopularDemand Actually I'm keeping it up mostly to see your reation, at this point :-)
22 mins ago, by Popular Demand
Goodbye, then.
@Diago ^^

@TheUnhandledException I am so not surprised!

@rchern I would guess only in your other halves dreams :)

):

Tim
3:28 PM
@TheUnhandledException Yep, and that's what I have right now. The problem is I need to filter the results on some of that data; my boss' solution is to basically just dump raw data in the table, but that will cause the table to grow quickly and makes things very denormalized. :(

@Tim and @AidenBell, maybe we should move this discussion to

Tim
@TheUnhandledException Good point, sorry everyone else :P
Ooh, privilege notification..

So anyone doing anything interesting today?

@TheUnhandledException My evening just started. So far my day consisted of fighting with SharePoint 2010 MasterPages. So No.

@Diago UG. Not fun.

3:37 PM
@TheUnhandledException It's one of those things were the more you understand it the more fun it becomes.
@PopularDemand Welcome Back.

@Diago I got nothing done this weekend on my project to build an XMPP (Jabber) inferface to this chat, so I hope to make some progress on that today

@TheUnhandledException Haha, no, no offense taken, I was merely leaving normally. Sorry if I stressed you out over that.

@PopularDemand :)

@TheUnhandledException Good luck with that.

@AidenBell You can't watch the transcript if you leave a room. You have to be idle there.

3:39 PM
@PopularDemand ;) ah well. My caffine has worn off now

@PopularDemand Ok good. No stress caused :-) I figured it was a well timed exit to accentuate humor

This is the lowest amount of people I have seen in here .... what are people doing at weekends?
in Regulator Headquarters, yesterday, by Aiden Bell
Oh this isn't the tavern

Chat often doesn't convey emotion well :-)

@PopularDemand lold wrong room

@Diago Thanks :-) I may need it, coding it in Ruby which I don't know as well as I'd like...

3:41 PM
@Diago Ahoy hoy. I actually just came back because I saw you in the LiveChat InstaPreview.

@PopularDemand Awesome :) Although I bounce in and out of chat like a bunny rabbit most days. Short attention span and all that.

@Diago What other kinds of rabbit are there?

@PopularDemand Killer rabbits

@PopularDemand I have no idea. Bunny rabbit just sound cute :P Although neighbours of ours have miniature rabbits. They also tend to break at double the speed of normal ones :P

3:46 PM
blinks

@TheUnhandledException We need a Venn diagram in here, stat!

@Diago, apropos of nothing, you people produce some tasty oranges.

@PopularDemand I hate oranges. I also keep forgetting we export so much, considering there is 2 farms in the family.

I don't really know what South Africa's exports are though, for all I know I have a box from the only orange grove in the country.
Er.
This is awkward.
So how 'bout them bunnies?

3:49 PM
@PopularDemand Lolz. I love your rep total :)

@Diago Why?
I can't think of any reason it's a special number.

@PopularDemand There isn't any. Just looks cool.
Also got you distracted :P

Q: XSS in the chat room name that are displayed in MSO

Hox Lyx VierxThe recent chat feature that was added recently has a XSS flaw in it. For testing purpose, I created a chat room called <b>123</b> and has you can see in the screenshot below, the <b> tags weren't escaped.

some tags are ok though aren't they?

I haven't tested
I don't feel like adding a script alert tag in MSO
But the <b> tag proof-of-concept should be enough

3:53 PM
@HoxLyxVierx Good find

Tim
@HoxLyxVierx Sure you do, the mischievousness of it beckons you forth ;)

@Diago Okay, if you say so.

@rchern It's escaped in the room list, so I'd guess it's supposed to be escaped there too

ah ok then
i hadn't looked at the room list

@Hox did you see balpha's YouTube submission?

3:55 PM
@Pop no, what is it ?

@HoxLyxVierx, you should add that to your question
@PopularDemand, did you find the pony with the ice cream cone? (;

@PopularDemand It was under starred posts

22 hours ago, by balpha
@rchern I did not.

omg lol

@systempuntoout Actually, it's just 24 -- one of them is a pony, dressed up with an ice cream cone. Can you spot it? :)
