Q: When should "into" be used rather than "in to," and vice versa?

Lord Torgamus"into" (one word) and "in to" (two words) are frequently confused. In what situations should the former be used? The latter?

@rchern My question! And you're welcome.

Time for a contest. It's a well-known fact that all the best taverns follow a specific naming convention. "The Brass Lantern," "The Prancing Pony," "The Drunken Clam," "The Mended Drum,"... they're all "The [Descriptor] [Noun]." Unfortunately, the tavern we're in isn't so blessed. I hereby challenge you to name it!

Yeah...honestly, really don't care about a name :p
Oh, that's you on ESE?

@JoePhillips what about caulk?

@Fosco Its an apartment. I probably shouldn't be putting my caulk all over

5:15 PM
@JoePhillips curious word choice and arrangement... I like it!.. On topic, I highly doubt the landlord would have an issue with a positive improvement such as clear caulking the windows.
@JoePhillips You could always ask them.

Also, I dont really think caulk would solve the problem (and it would be a crapton of work)
I actually just had a thought.... maybe I could clamp a board down over top the plastic on the sill
Then I could probably just use a really thin board and those table cloth holders that people use on picnic tables
I think that might just be the perfect solution! <3 brain storming

OK sorry had to do one last thing before I leave. Feedback welcome. Really leaving this time ;-)

Q: IRC-like /me command for chat

JoshApologies if this is a duplicate or belongs elsewhere. I love the "action" command /me in IRC, and think it would be fun to have in the chat. So a message like: /me loves the new chat system Would show up as: Josh loves the new chat system Rather than: Josh: loves the new chat sys...

/me goes to get lunch

/me agrees with that

jjnguy doesn't see the point

Leave that for IRC, this place is off-topic enough as it is.

5:21 PM
Won't be the same here, the names and the text is closer together in irc, so it makes more sense
Here it will be: "Lasse V. [ikon] ---------- wonders about the /me command"

what does irc have to do with this place being too off-topic?

are you Lasse Viren?

Not likely

@rchern There's no real need for a /me option here, and it would encourage more off-topic-ness.

I fail to see the connection. (:
There's no real need for a lot of things. But I don't see how it encourages ot

5:24 PM
is there a topic here?

Yes. The topic is "general" heh.

I should probably go do more work. Ciao

hehe hi ppl
just found out that the boring train company are now doing Wifi on there London bound trains
feels like the 21st century

5:40 PM
how does train wifi work, I mean how does the train connect to the internet?

@PiersMyers Satellite?

It has downloaded a copy of the internet onto a CD and give one out to each train
3

@LasseVKarlsen That's ridiculous.
The Internet won't fit on anything smaller than a Blu-ray disc, these days.
Everyone knows that.

Oh yeah, I forgot moore's law

blah, still nobody is jumping on my meta q. sulks :P

5:45 PM

You know what would be way better than a /me feature? A /you feature.

That would only be used in 3 variants, so it would be easy to implement as well

...

what about a /we (and a /poo ) feature :)

/you stink, suck and rock

5:47 PM
@rchern What kind of jumping were you expecting? There's not much to discuss there.

I want a jumps on this and oh look at the publish I just did :D

@rchern What? Where?

@devinb /me loves your answer on the /me question

5:55 PM
@balpha /me always loves /me's answers.
Devin hopes that isn't arrogant or anything.

@devinb what @balpha said. I was going to let my downvote speak for itself, but you're doing a fine job of speaking for us. I authorize you to be my official voice on that question.

@PopularDemand @Popular I think it's best for everyone (me) when they (me) let me (me) speak for them (everyone)
Everyone wins!

I don't really have strong feelings on the /me question
it's just... meh
but there's actually a hack in the chat app because of /me

X doesn't contribute to the goals of Chat. X shouldn't be implemented, or at least it should be a very low priority.

@balpha What's the hack?

5:58 PM
the site admins actually have a few /commands, so for one of us to start a message with /me would result in an error
hence /me is explicitly excluded

/ban @balpha

I like the /me command from IRC, but I understand if it lessens the decorum of serious discussion rooms.

Nope, it's broken...

So anything that doesn't promote serious discussion is banned from this chat?

@rchern I wouldn't say banned, but perhaps they won't spend time implementing things.

6:01 PM
@rchern that's an interesting leap.

/me can do this all day without anyone caring...

@rchern no, and your XKCD point is a valid example

slaps @Fosco around the head with a wet kipper

I know it was a reach. The flip side of my comment is just as much a reach. And there's my point. (:

6:02 PM
@rchern Well, there's a difference between allowing some fun, vs allowing anything fun.

actually, I'm still waiting for the first greasemonkey script for the chat
maybe that's a project?

I get a strong vibe that the second irc is mentioned, people pull out the torches.
Which is crap.

The fact that they DID allow XKCD doesn't mean they should therefore allow anything else that encourages off-topic discussions.

@balpha I like challenges...

Oh, I have no qualms with IRC.

6:03 PM
the mere fact that our admin commands start with a slash is a hat tip to IRC

@devinb, I didn't say it did.

@balpha what would this greasemonkey script do?

Think the torches come out with IRC? Try mentioning Twitter.

@fosco this:

The Titillating Tweet
@balpha oh.. to just adjust the display of chats starting with /me ?

6:04 PM
@rchern, I know. But it's simply one of those things that I've heard too many times, and I unfairly branded you with it.

The way I look at it is does having it harm anything?

/me doesn't think so, @rchern

The schedule

@rchern, and my response would be yes.

If it doesn't, and you wouldn't use it, then why would it matter if it was added to please someone else?

6:05 PM
Well, my response was yes. But I suppose I ought to explain it.

no it wouldn't harm, but it would be more work than it looks like
think about starring, flagging, editing...

Then use that.
:p

@rchern If I and you are in the middle of a serious discussion, (as we are now) and Fosco says "/me doesn't think so" It is easy for us to ignore him, he is doing something that is not relevant to the conversation.

Ahem. "twittIRCebook"

Not all the rooms on the chat contain serious discussions.

6:07 PM
I think the /me makes more sense in meta. But, having /me to discuss things on SO wouldn't be an improvement to the discussions.

However, if we implement a feature that explicitly allows breaking the conversation flow (and therefore implicitly encourages it) then you are diluting all discussions.
@rchern, we are perfectly capable of having frivilous discussions without it.

that would probably work on a homeopathic chat

You're having a conversation. Actions are part of conversations too. shrugs << and by saying just italicize it, you're giving multiple meanings to italicizing.
How would having a /me command break conversation flow?

and we are perfectly capable of having serious discussions with it. But the question is which one is the application geared towards?
Actions are part of conversations, but they don't need to be part of discussions. I've had serious client discussions over email and phone. I didn't stop to say "I shrug" every time I didn't know something.

I don't understand how having a /me command fits into an point regarding serious discussion vs non-serious discussion.
You're right. They don't need to be. But you're saying that since it doesn't need to be, it definitely shouldn't be.

6:10 PM
/me is non-serious. It doesn't in any way contribute to the goal of furthering the discussions that happen on SO and meta.

There's a gap there.

Implementing things that are extraneous to the goal of any application is... not the usual method.

It isn't an integral feature.

@rchern I'm not saying "definitely", I'm saying that I don't believe it should be. And I don't believe it should be, because it has no positive implications, and at least some (minor) negative implications.

Nobody is saying that.

6:12 PM
I'll grant that.

you mean "because I believe it has no positive implications"
:p

Absolutely :)
these are all strictly my beliefs.

Ultimately, is there a difference between:
I don't think so.

@balpha which have already been overruled by @blapha saying this

/me doesn't think so.

6:13 PM
"no it wouldn't harm, but it would be more work than it looks like

think about starring, flagging, editing..."

Dang it, @devinb...you broke up my flow. :P

@George, ask anyone here, I'm kind of a jerk... :)?

That's not a chin, that's a questionmark after my smile.

having it like that breaks the flow @George. Having a command that made it integrated would make it be part of the flow.

6:14 PM
thinks that italics work quite well for actions

Are you asking me or telling me?

@rchern Yes, I'm not hellfire and brimstone against this or anything. I'm simply saying that if the buck stopped with me (and no one had given me new compelling reasons) my decision would be as I've stated.

@devinb, and if @balpha were to post that, then it is a logical point. More work to develop is something measurable. "It harms the discussion" is your opinion and it isn't measurable the way you've stated it.

Anyways, I agree with devinb's points. However, there is the matter of the audience and the notion of making some allowances for their expectations.
Hence, onebox support for things like XKCD.

@rchern Balpha did post that.
I kind of talked over him though.

6:16 PM
Also, who is Jon referring to in his comment.

that doesn't mean I'm totally against that

@devinb as a comment or answer to the question?

I think it's good that @Josh posted the question, so there can be some discussion
if many people want it, it might be worth it

Personally, I recognize that it would be more coding.
What feature request doesn't involve more coding?

as I said, my very own official stand on it is "meh..."

6:18 PM
It isn't like chat isn't usable without it. I think it'd be a nice bonus though. It certain wouldn't make unusable by any means if it were done.

note that this would be a fun feature to code -- so it's not like I'm shying away from it :)

(;

@rchern I think it harms discussion is actually less pervasive than "it harms the purpose of the site". Basically it is the reason we have "off-topic" as a close reason. I don't believe that they should be spending extra time integrating features that don't explicitly encourage the goals of the site.

*How* does it harm discussion?

@rchern The more "fun" features you have, the more you are saying the site is about fun. Which is great, and hell, I clearly use it for that.
But in order for these things to work out for what they are intended for you need to stay on message and on mark.

6:21 PM
Personally, when I see someone says "/me blah..." that breaks the conversation flow for me.
If it were displayed in a pretty way, it would keep the conversation flow.
Which would be an improvement.
It isn't just a fun feature.

But what is the purpose of saying "/me blah" at all?

why not use italics for actions?

If we are discussing this prospective feature, do you ever really care that

looking at all this pretty good discussion, I feel like I have to use the message relocation feature again

hehe

6:22 PM
/me remains seated, intently staring at his screen.

Ok, scenario

@Piers compromises are for implementers. I'm more of an idealogue.

Finally Power

@devinb, Let's say that I've asked a programming question and a room has been created here for the question.

@Diago "Finally Power"?

6:23 PM
/me tried to set the blah value in the web.config, but that didn't help.

@rchern, sidenote: I have a meeting in five minutes.

@PopularDemand Had a power failure here for the last 6 hours. The Mac survived until an hour ago

@devinb you mean, "/me has a meeting"?

@Diago Ah. That strike getting to you?

That isn't harming the discussion.

6:24 PM
@balpha That was going to be my big finish, actually.

sorry for ruining it with my wit

@rchern It also isn't adding anything. Actually, I'd say it makes it a little more ludicirous in some minor way.

But then I don't see the real difference between saying "I tried" and "/me tried"

@PopularDemand Oh yeah. Big time.

Other than that the second one will be portrayed in 3rd person

6:25 PM
It is comparable to watching people act out their stories.

And Lasse doesn't like people that talk about themselves in 3rd person

@devinb I was waiting for you to say it, too.

@LasseVKarlsen Look at the question:

For some people, /me is a common convention.

@PopularDemand The Slashed Me

6:26 PM
They might think it is going to look pretty

@rchern So if someone says "Your screen isn't on, did you check if it is plugged in?" and they say get on their hands and knees and say "I went under the desk like this " goes under the desk "and then I checked the plug" checks the plug

Type /me and just end up looking like an idiot
@balpha, please don't make people look like idiots!
:D

@rchern If only it were that easy!
:)

I still prefer /you. Really, why limit that ability to mods?

Please stop all conversation... Until I have caught up with the transcript. Thank you. That will be all.

6:27 PM
@Diago There's barely any coverage of that in the US; what I have heard is from the BBC, and that's not much.

how about /we?

@rchern, by the by, Jon was asking me if I've been on the site.

@Diago Eh, they've just been repeating the same thing over and over for 20 minutes.

/we like to party

@PopularDemand It's actually not as bad.... except when they decided to pull the plug in which case I really wonder why I didn't buy the automatic rifle a few weeks back
@balpha Repeat after me: We are not IRC. We are not IRC

6:29 PM
/we are not IRC

@balpha How about /royal-we?

/royal-we Dance!

@balpha I am guessing devs and mods are still immune to suspensions right? :)

yes
well, devs technically aren't -- but we're all mods :)

It's bad enough that we have /kick

6:31 PM
@rchern Thanks for a great discussion. Is it wrong that I hope we end up on the opposite side of other discussions?

How about respected members of the community, like me!?!!

what about /slap ?

hi

He did say kick right?

It didn't kick me, yet.
Or, did it...?

@balpha That was really a useless option.... Since when they type the browser blocks the whole kick event

I know, that's already reported

Haha, it asked if I wanted to stay or leave the page...i chose stay.

6:33 PM
and kicking isn't really a useful feature anyway

@balpha +100 for removing it. I would rather make it mute or something which causes an 1 hour suspension or something automatically

you can always reenter

/me hates it when someone at work interrupts a good discussion online >_<
:p

jjnguy doesn't understand the need for a /me

who's jjnguy?
OH, that's YOU!

6:35 PM
Yeah, that doesn't break the conversation flow or anything like that :P

/me thinks he should go back to drinking since this conversation is heading nowhere

That is me!!! (Or Justin, if you prefer)
(Not jinguy)

@rchern It could possible be just you? Just wondering aloud.... :)

@Diago hmmm, it's only 1:30, probably too early for that...

@jjnguy Speaking of that, I had a friend in college named Jing. So at first glance your name always looks like "Jing Guy" to me.

6:37 PM
@Diago, maybe, it's been commented previously. In fact I was quite certain this particular meta question was a dupe. I've been searching but I can't find another question. Maybe it got deleted, I don't know.

@PopularDemand I never realized how difficult it was to see the two j's in a row.

6:39 PM
@jjnguy I'm probably a special case.

Hm? I took no offense by your comment. Didn't even consider it. I know we're just having <sub>shhh, fun!</sub>. (;

@PopularDemand No, you aren't. Lots of people think it's jinguy. If you search meta for 'jinguy' there are a few results. And that doesn't include comments.

@jjnguy Thank you :) Although in about 8 hours I am going to be wishing I was in yours.

well that failed

@Diago haha, yeah, probably.
