I think we mostly missed the BBS era
closest thing we had was teletext over modem, and that quickly got replaced by text only internet and real internet

@ShadowWizard Sorry, black ones again today. You really need to work on your timing :P

@Magisch My answer was never on the front page when sorted with Votes. Only when sorted by activity.
@Magisch I used @TimPost 's antique watch to get a watch. I am hopeful that I will get one as a swag :D

lol... a year or so later: 400-5 meta.stackoverflow.com/a/351081/621962

@JourneymanGeek They are just called Gandhi Nehru family to avoid ambiguity or to avoid controversies. But they still happen.

@canon Nice! I never got further than 303 (on an answer on IPS main). Meta is probably even worse ;)

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Bad keyword in body, blacklisted website in body (196): battery replacement dubai by mitchelstarc on askubuntu.com

Amazon giveaways: Why don't you just print "Tim, you didn't win" on a poster and send it to me? This would save you so many page loads.

@TimPost Do all those page loads come with some ad revenue or something? Then you have your answer :P They can't afford the poster if you don't click on those pages ;)

This ... this is a vicious cycle that took years to perfect.

lol
Right... bleh. Did another round of 'these are people we should talk to' on the matchmaking site. Filtered out folks from my "clan". Can't find the list of matching stars on my phone so need to get my parentals (who should be doing this anyway) to doublecheck and start calling

@JourneymanGeek It looks like even my grandma is acting more/quicker than your parentals :P
And it's not even her job.

5:35 PM
wait. Your granma is trying to matchmake me?

@Tinkeringbell fat load of good all of that community support did. design team trumps all. ;)

@Tinkeringbell my parents are proving slightly useless and making excuses.
and sometmes contradictory ._.

@JourneymanGeek No, my grandma is honestly trying to matchmake me.

@Tinkeringbell mine is too

There's apparently a perfect prince charming going to their church :P

5:36 PM
My mom's magazine vendor tried

@TimPost I once won a giveaway and the guy who did it wanted to charge me shipping. Shipping was 40€
soured me on giveaways permanently

(young lady's much much younger and a Dr.)

@JourneymanGeek Hahaha

so that's out.

@Magisch Yeah, when you take out the give part, all you're left with is away. That stinks.

5:37 PM
also apparently I need to make more, yet stay in my current job cause "its for the government" ;p

@JourneymanGeek Okaay. That's a bit too much pressure :P

(personally I want/need something more interesting ._.)
@Tinkeringbell naw, at least he made the effort
don't forget, I'm not reluctant or anything

it was theorethically worth it
I let a friend claim it instead, it was some kind of smart enabled tv

@Magisch assuming he shipped

would have been an utter paperweight for me anyways

5:38 PM
@JourneymanGeek I wouldn't survive it for 10 minutes :P But if you're used to it/expecting it, it's different, I guess. What's against dating the Dr.?
Just age?

@Tinkeringbell 11 year age difference

@JourneymanGeek the friend got it, but he had to pay shipping

and erm
I'm not that educated. And my job kinda sucks. ;p

@JourneymanGeek That means you can stay home and take care of the kids :P

(but hey, beats funemployment)

5:39 PM
can be a house husband

@Tinkeringbell I'd be open to that but my society... ugh

seems to be a pretty sweet gig
if you like kids that is

I'm apparently decent with them
Not as good as with dogs, but... I've not managed to lose or damage one yet.

@Magisch Really? Imagine you just cleaned the floor and there's drool again everywhere. That's life with either a dog or a kid :P

@Tinkeringbell eh, but they're your kids then. Presumably a lot of emotional attachment

5:41 PM
@Tinkeringbell Or poop
or puke

plus you get to raise your very own human
pretty rad if you're into it

@Magisch I'd be totally incapable of raising a decent one ;)

23 secs ago, by Magisch
pretty rad if you're into it
describes a lot of things

@Tinkeringbell Its something you apparently figure out as you go along
besides, unless I move, my parents would probably take over help
they missed a lot of their first grandkid's life so far
family drama and all that.

@JourneymanGeek Famous quote: "Every parent should go on a pedagogic training course when having kids. It's so good, you learn stuff like 'never threaten to kick your kid out'"

5:42 PM
@Tinkeringbell eh, I wouldn't

From our neighbour that, you guessed it, kicked their kid out.

did the kid just leave and cut contact?

but I'd probably reinvent the "take the baby and carefully slosh them to clean" method

@Magisch No, the kid was told to go away. Is now sleeping with his grandparents

cause I know someone from the states whose mom was like "yo you're old enough now get a job and pay us rent" while they were in high school
so they got a job, then got an apartment and moved states. Then haven't spoken to their parents then
leaving a lot of stuff out

5:44 PM
@JourneymanGeek That's kind of sad. My parents would love a grandkid, but Mom already made it clear that she's not going to be babysitting.

@Tinkeringbell my parents are going to be in all sorts of trouble if I move out
They're a bit overreliant on having me around

IF there ever accidentally comes a stork along that drops me a baby, I at least want to stay home and take care of it anyways. My mom did that for all three of her kids, and it's something I really appreciate.

(actually if I worked remote - I'd really need to move out or find a co-working space)

could rename yourself to tinkeringmom and call your kids tinkerers

@Magisch Ehhh. This one has had a lot of drama at home already, to the point where he crashed at our house in the afternoons just to have the peace and quiet to do some homework. He's not a perfect kid, but his parents are a mess too... so I'm blaming 50/50 :P

5:46 PM
and the house "the workshop"

and the options for the former, in singapore for a single are pretty terrible

(another reason why I'm not having kids, I would teach them all the bad habits about pun overuse)

@Magisch Trust me, there's no such thing. We spent 30 minutes after every dinner doing nothing but lame jokes and puns when we're all at home ;)

sounds like a fun bunch

Yeah, I'll miss family dinner when I move out
It always manages to cheer me up, even after a day like today where I had to argue with co-workers over adding arrays to the code

5:49 PM
@Tinkeringbell well a lot of my cousins moved and their parentals commute from india every so often
so moving out dosen't mean missing it ;p

It's interesting, we're all worlds apart here

@JourneymanGeek I'll be missing it more though :P Now we're having family dinners 2-4 times a week

@Magisch or at least continents
@Tinkeringbell on the other hand, my dad's a bit of a pain these days and the space would help ;p

@Magisch I thought you lived next door? :P

always
in fact, I'm in the hallway right now
(never been to the netherlands tbh)

5:53 PM
You should come over sometime :P It's a fun country, lot's of nice stuff to see. The zoo in Arnhem is pretty close to the border and really pretty :)

I speak -10 dutch

They speak German at the zoo ;)

interesting
maybe in the summer

(At least enough to get you through the gates and then to order dinner/drinks ;) )

@Magisch honestly the fact that we're different is the awesome part about the internet ;p

5:55 PM
I'm quite a cheap person though
last time I was abroad I just didn't eat and drank tapwater all week
cause stuff in austria is like 2x what it is here

Zoo is expensive too, but you can always bring your own food/drinks.
And not eating for a week isn't healthy

Zoo I get though, you get something unique out of it
but I can eat at home

when abroad?

no but eating isn't really mandatory
a week is almost nothing

O.o

5:58 PM
0_0

Still. Really unhealthy.

(especially when you have, uh, reserves, like me)

You're actually worrying me.

I could stand to lose 10-15 pounds :p

Still. Worried.

5:59 PM
why?

you won't die if you don't eat for a week, but it ain't doing good things to you

I went over a month without eating before

besides vitamin supplements, that is
I had no fridge and no stove

6:00 PM
that's

Might just be me... I had a colleague with anorexia, and I'm reading this in her voice when she told me she was proud she only ate this much, and not at all... and knowing that you kinda micromanage your intake anyways ... I don't like how that sounds.

just about enough to keep you alive, I suppose

@Magisch my diet's super super restrictive

I'm generally a really lazy person

and I've found stuff I could eat in places I didn't really speak the language

6:00 PM
I usually eat a bit too much, but when externals make it even slightly inconvenient to eat, I don't

@Magisch as am I, but you still have some basic metabolic requirements

haven't really felt that
sure you're hungry for about a day but after that nothing

I'm pretty sure your blood sugar would drop.

obviously you gotta prep with some vitamins and other basic necessities but that doesn't mean food necessarily

@Magisch Yeah, that sounds really worrying to me. :/ Even the people I know that do fast eat something after sundown, generally.

6:01 PM
and I once actually had that happen (odd food reaction + excercise) and it was doubleplus unfun.

@Magisch that "nothing" is because your body is starting to metabolise itself to keep you alive. And that ain't just fat reserves.

eh. It never felt that important

(And I really didn't want all of us to pile on you @Magisch, telling you how wrong this is... but it just does sound incomprehensible, and dangerous)

not even being hungry is a powerful motivator. It's just a "uh, when there's time, I guess" kind of thing
my dad is a bit mental in that department too, although for other reasons

@Magisch Everyone has their quirks, I guess ;)

6:09 PM
I've honestly never been exposed to people thinking that not eating a couple days is unhealthy. I guess it never came up
Always thought that water is 2-3 days before it becomes an issue, vitamins / minerals is 10-14 days and actual food is some 60 days depending on reserves

Water is 2 or 3 minutes for me before it becomes an issue

@Magisch That's the 'before you die from lack of'. It can be an issue long before that ;)

Water is 2-3 days before its lack is fatal

Foodstuff, well, you'd know it's unhealthy when your body is complaining
And been there, done that

I'm reasonably confident that I could go 3+ months without food and not die

6:11 PM
A heavy chunk of your water comes from food, so if you're not eating and not drinking you have a day or less before you're ineffective and probably going to die.

@Magisch In an arguably worse condition than dying

my dad did it sort of, he lived off of zero calorie soup for the entire time. It wasn't good for him, but he seemed no worse for the wear

@ArtOfCode What? No
And some people are pretty good at ignoring when their body is complaining
But that doesn't mean they couldn't live healthier

I'm pretty thirsty on water though, I drink about 3-4L each day
mostly tapwater

I hate tap water
Not that I wouldn't drink it if I had to
Right now I can only drink bottled mineral water and life is heaven
Bottom line, I or anyone else without a special condition could go without food for 2 or 3 days twice in one week, but 1) Why should I, and 2) I'd just overeat and compensate the next week
Hey @Art, go without food for 2 days. FOR SCIENCE of course

6:16 PM
no
I like food :P

We're testing artsiness after 48 hours of hunger

just gonna channel the inner lazy
or not

You might make a good German impressionist after day 2

6:39 PM
@Tinkeringbell o_O... How old is the kid??

@ShadowWizard 19?

@ArtOfCode ArtOfFood?

I don't know exactly. Something around that age.

@Tinkeringbell ouch. Well he doesn't have any legal case... But what did he do to have it happen?

@ShadowWizard Have an argument. That's about all the details I have :(

6:48 PM
@Magisch for what it is worth, I consider lack of hunger instinct an illness. Same as lack of pain, which is dangerous for obvious reasons. Without eating the body might fall apart in ways you don't even know or feel directly, e.g. being tired all day, depressed, etc. Does it make sense to you?
If not I'll drop it, not here to judge. :)
@Tinkeringbell single argument?? Hard to believe...

@ShadowWizard eh. There are more serious things wrong with me

Why am I responding to a survey that asks my why? but doesn't offer me a multi-line textbox? Or am I missing some google docs trick?

FWIW I have annual checkups with blood tests to get extra health insurance services and a rebate on the extra contribution and so far beyond the usual there haven't been recorded side effects

@Magisch Maybe but if you can improve something, why not? :)

for the same reason I don't spend 2-3 hours a day outside like recommended and don't exercise 1h a day like recommended

6:54 PM
@rene Perhaps that's worth a comment on the post ;)

and the same reason you don't min-max your nutrient intake

@rene survey by that company that sent the passwords of everyone?
@Magisch so you don't eat due to laziness?

sometimes
I usually eat normally, a little too much to be optimal even, but when my fridge broke or I'm on vacation and not conveniently able to get cheap food ... eh

@Tinkeringbell hey I had black socks too today! With white stripes? ;)

@ShadowWizard Nope, all black :P

6:58 PM
Oh got such too but for some reason rarely wear them.

peak laziness: buy only black socks so you never have to worry about matching pairs

@Tinkeringbell good point, done.

@Magisch that is actually a good idea! ;-)
Surely some people actually do it...

@Magisch Oh but even then they can differ at the top edge :P

@Tinkeringbell bonus level: same brand

7:03 PM
Mom always curses when she has to sift through too many pairs of black socks doing that :P

@Magisch extra bonus: same manufacturing batch

I carry my laziness into clothes shopping too
find a sock I'm okay with? buy 20 pairs. Find a good tshirt? buy all the store has in stock for that size
makes it so you only need to shop once every couple years

heh, I've got by for the past few years with people sending me free T-shirts for stuff
bunch of SO, few Hacktoberfest...

I wish I could wear t-shirts all year long :P I really need long-sleeved things in winter, preferably thick long-sleeved things

@Tinkeringbell tell me about that... Wife got like 10 pairs of black socks but different color on top stripe. Some very similar. :(

7:14 PM
@ShadowWizard Seems to be a ladies thing, black things with a colored stripe ;) I see it a lot for socks, shoes, underwear, swimwear. Never see such things for males though :P

@Tinkeringbell put something over the T-shirt?

Be like me and wear three layers of T-shirt

@ShadowWizard Then why not just wear long-sleeves standard :P

@Tinkeringbell thats where you get cloth jackets to cover them
Jeans-Tshirt or Jeans-Tshirt-Cloth Jacket is good for all year

I don't really like jackets ;)

7:17 PM
@Tinkeringbell well I got few boxers that are black but with the top stripe in different color. Not sure it counts though...

I rather have a single layer of clothing. Or two, if it's really cold, but then it's simple black top/long-sleeve under whatever long-sleeved thing I'm wearing :)

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ all short sleeved? Quite useless... No? ;-)
@Tinkeringbell too bad! :P

@ShadowWizard No colds in the most cold prone time of the year, so no

extra layering: tshirt - cloth jacket - labcoat - raincoat

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ no what? w_w
@Magisch hoodie?

7:21 PM
Pretty useful

lab coat is some product safety regulation

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ but hands are still exposed to the cold...

Well I'm quarantined indoors for at least till the next month
That was the most interesting sentence I said I grammatically

Can you quarantine someone outdoors?

I do want to do that sometimes
But I don't have mod tools

7:23 PM
@Tinkeringbell If you've got the key, yes :)

@ArtOfCode Hmm...

Yeah, mod tools
But other people have mod tools too

@Tinkeringbell Antivirus does it to viruses... ;)

@ShadowWizard Yeah but antivirus locks viruses inside something to quarantine them ;)

7:39 PM
@Tinkeringbell the world? 🌎 ;)

@ShadowWizard something :P

@Tinkeringbell I wear t-shirts year round + a sweatshirt or two as necessary
I happen to very much dislike long sleeved shirts, they make my arms feel weird
@ArtOfCode I try to do this, but GCI is only once a year...

@Bart how did you do this one?

7:57 PM
@rene multiple rapid panned shots edited together

that's the same athlete multiple times? :P

yup

@Mithrandir Like when you need a disguise for your video?

...you could say that.

@Bart ah, I thought it was a camera feature.

8:03 PM
@rene ah no, that was just some postprocessing

There are some nice photo's in that profile, btw.

Thanks

8:28 PM
@rene you also take pictures of things? :)

always blurry

9:01 PM
@ShadowWizard family photo

RENE IS MUTATED!!!
:P

1 hour later…
10:23 PM
@rene nice!
