since the suspension is only 5 days longer, I personally would just wait it out, whether or not you actually did anything wrong. — sir flip the third 22 mins ago
Seriously?

The comment's gone though

To be fair, it's totally possible that he didn't create new accounts, e.g. if he's using a proxy or dynamic IP address. I have no idea if that's the case, of course.

Same happened for me. My IP was blacklisted by a website because I abused something.

I use Tor, but for some reason I never have problems on SE.
Might be because I don't have a low reputation.

Ha
ahahaha that made my day

God dammit passwords aren't encrypted, they're hashed!

@forest eh, there's a certain amount of human intervention with any suspension so chances are someone took a look - and there was a reason for it.

5:15 AM
@forest Reputation doesn't matter. I know folks who got suspensions despite good rep.

Hello! Do you guys know of or use a userscript for SE sites where if you post a comment to a Q or A with a link to a Q or A, the link would automatically be wrapped up with Qs title with that hyperlink. I used such a userscript back in 2015, but I don't remember its name, and I have difficulty finding it.

Q: More Share Links (Markdown / HTML / BBCode)

Jason C Description: As of 1.04, this now also works with Firefox / Greasemonkey. Adds share links in additional formats, and also lets you omit user ID from links: Features: Adds Markdown, HTML, and BBCode. Option to omit user ID from links (and value is remembered for next time). Reme...

not necessarily 2015 though, but I use that
and it's not automatic, you have to select the format before copying it, but that's better than nothing..
oh, the linked app seems the one you want:

Q: SE Comment Link Helper

Tim Stone About This userscript automatically converts raw Stack Exchange question URLs into the form [title](link) before submitting comments by grabbing their titles from the API. This is similar to conversion done natively on posts, and is in response to this Meta request. The script also tries to ...

@andmyself Yep, that is it. Thanks a lot. :D

no prob

ping?

@rene pong!

Hmm, I hoped I could blame the NS wifi for the sloppiness of our website but it turns out it is us ....

7:25 AM
@rene NS? National Security? o_O
@rene KABOOM! 4 hours! Where are the dogs and the parrot?!

I was summoned?
yawn

@ShadowWizard Dutch Railways (Nederlandse Spoorwegen)
Here comes the sun ...

Yay. And I'll be locked up in an office the entire day

well, same here ... soonish

@Tinkeringbell sure! I just nuked off topic MSE question... feels like olden times.... :D

7:30 AM
@ShadowWizard Go complain to the dog ;) he's supposed to keep an eye on things in early morning while I try to wake up :P

Train drives slowly to pass the firing range so we are an easier target ...

@Tinkeringbell ask Tim where the keys are, then you can fly into freedom! :P
@rene firing range?!

@rene Nice :P

wasn't the dog on night shift?

@Tinkeringbell which of the dogs? ;)

7:31 AM
@ShadowWizard it says so on the fence

@rene I dunno? May very well be.
That'd explain why there's no shouting here now ;)

@Tinkeringbell uuuhhh, you wish I got shot at ;)

@rene I didn't say so (out loud)

raises white flags

I kinda like it when the train drives slowly past those.. gives me a chance to peek :P

7:33 AM
MEW!
no, not that mew...

peeks into the gun barrel of an Howitzer ...
brb, transfer from train to the office.

Pfft. I just made it to the bus. Another fifteen minutes at least before I'm at the office (and can get coffee)

8 minutes walk ....

panic

7:59 AM
I don't why I'm listening to Eurobeat right now...

8:11 AM
I'm in and on coffee

I'm in, no coffee, too much co-worker. Coffee is going to be fixed NOW :P

no coffee here either, still in fileupload hell

Coffee :D
That's GREEN and TEA....
Way to make me angry!

Getting myself coffee. Don't trust these bots and their tea making ways.

8:23 AM
Sounds like a smart idea :)
Smarter than some of the stuff going on here :/

Even smarter would be to lay off the caffeine :p

... did Spotify delete podcasts from their desktop app?

@Magisch I need it. To survive. IF I have to stop the caffeine I'll likely end up with alcohol instead...

@Tinkeringbell thought that too, until I laid off of it completly
now I'm roughly at the same level of tiredness/non tiredness as before with caffeine

It's not tiredness... it's that the coffee keeps me focused on something else than anger right now :P
It's a sort of comfort food :P

8:35 AM
switch to tea
more tasty & varied

Not over here, they only have 2 or 3 tastes that I don't really like ;) I do drink tea at home a lot ;)

@rene inside coffee? Eww it's sticky!
:P
I made myself only half cup by mistake now... too lazy to go add more water.
@Bart hmm? Context?
@rene pic or it never happened! :D

@ShadowWizard just wondering out loud. I use Spotify to listen to music and podcasts at work. But apparently the podcasts are gone. Or at least their entry in the menu disappeared.

I was on the other side of shooting range fences many times. ;)
@Bart you mean all of them? Maybe redesign, and they removed the option since nobody used it except you? ;)

@ShadowWizard I accidentally found myself in a shooting range recently...

8:40 AM
@ShadowWizard apparently I can still search for them ... bug I guess
Ah, apparently a known bug :/

@Mithrandir ouch... how did you find out? When you was almost shot at? :/
@Bart :(

How are blatantly off-topic questions deleted from MSE? By roomba or by humans?

humans

why not roomba?

9:32 AM
@ɪBᴜɢ too slow

eh, but why roomba on other sites?

@ɪBᴜɢ roomba isn't the primary mechanism

on other sites as well, people need to close it

@JourneymanGeek Do you delete such questions in addition to closing?

9:34 AM
but on MSE off topic posts is, well, a pretty high profile problem
@ɪBᴜɢ yes

People on other sites are not as fast as people on MSE

I close, comment and delete

On other sites I often see mods close questions without deleting them directly, there's a difference. What exactly is it?

@ɪBᴜɢ its not as much of an issue there
and there's different reasons for closing

different reasons?

9:36 AM
well stuff isn't as off topic

Q that can be fixed vs. Q that can never be fixed?

I mean, even programming questions are less out of our ballpark on SU, than it is on MSE
yup
and an implicit goal is to discourage off topic posts from being posted here.

that makes sense. Thank you Journeyman

closing @ɪBᴜɢ as off topic ;)

Q: Why are O-O and O-O-O symbols used for castling in algebraic notation?

Jim DavisI'm curious about why the O-O and O-O-O symbols are used for castling in algebraic notation? Why not use the consistent and logical Kg1 or Kc1 for white and Kg8 or Kc8 for black? Why adopt the less than obvious O-O and O-O-O from descriptive notation?

You meant this, right? ;)

Feeling dirty for writing this:
> data.formatFileSize = function(file_size) {
// >= 1GB
if (file_size >= 1073741824) {
return '' + Math.round(((1.0 * file_size) / 1024 / 1024 / 1024) * 100) / 100 + ' GB';
// >= 1MB
} else if (file_size >= 1048576) {
return '' + Math.round(((1.0 * file_size) / 1024 / 1024) * 100) / 100 + ' MB';
// >= 1KB
} else if (file_size >= 1024) {
return '' + Math.round(((1.0 * file_size) / 1024) * 100) / 100 + ' KB';
// < 1KB
} else {
return '1 KB';
}
};

@Magisch I got something for you. Will dig it up soon. ;)

I wrote this because I really couldn't be bothered to find out the proper way to display file sizes in a list

10:34 AM
@Magisch ['', 'k', 'M', 'G', 'T'][fileSize % 1024]
that'll give you the suffic
wait, no it won't
['', 'k', 'M', 'G', 'T'][Math.floor(Math.floor(Math.log2(fileSize)) / 10)]
there we go
@Magisch here ya go, full function:
function formatFileSize(fileSize) {
    const sizes = ['', 'k', 'M', 'G', 'T'];
    const suffix = sizes[Math.floor(Math.floor(Math.log2(fileSize)) / 10)];
    const orderOfMagnitude = sizes.indexOf(suffix);
    return (fileSize / Math.pow(1024, orderOfMagnitude)).toFixed(2) + ` ${suffix}B`;
}
formatFileSize(987)
=> "987.00 B"
formatFileSize(2077)
=> "2.03 kB"
formatFileSize(5048576)
=> "4.81 MB"
formatFileSize(6073741824)
=> "5.66 GB"
formatFileSize(6073741824492)
=> "5.52 TB"

not sure how much better that is
I tend to err on the side of using fewer temp variables

uh... why
nowt wrong with em

also, the <1024B becoming 1KB regardless is by design

10:50 AM
if (fileSize < 1024) { return '1KB' } at the start of it

yeah
I wonder from a pattern standpoint, is yours considered strictly better?

@Magisch absolutes are hard to deal with, but I'd generally say yes. It's more extensible - if you want petabytes and exabytes you just stick , 'P', 'E'] on the end of the array instead of adding a couple more ifs
and fewer magic numbers

I guess in a general sense yeah, but file upload size is hard capped at 2.5gb
unlikely to change

fairly obvious what the magic numbers are in your case, but they are magic
shrug you know the task more than I do, so use whichever works better for it :)

I wonder, is your logarhitm trick to generate array inidices more readable then a magic number?

10:55 AM
shrug

the toFixed(2) is significantly more elegant then *100/100 though

for me, personally, yes, but that might not apply to everyone and it might not apply to whatever code standards your company has

since the latter depends on the interpreter not optimising enough to work

@Magisch beware: toFixed returns a string - if you need to do further math on the output, use *100/100 instead
or just stick it at the end of the chain, whatever works better

Even with returning a string "1.24" * 2 et al still works
but yeah it's bad practice to do math with strings

10:57 AM
yeah... sigh javascript

now I kind of wanna revisit my code a lil more

Go for it, reviewing your old decisions is a good way to find mistakes

This is my quick & dirty way to sanitize file names to work with our super-dumb legacy system (the legacy system using the ms access variant of unescaped eval to handle the files):
> data.sanitizeFileName = function(file_name) {
return file_name
.replace(new RegExp('(\.' + (file_name.split('.').pop()) + ')', 'g'), '')
.replace(/([ \-\,\.\"\'])/g, '_')
.replace(/([+\&])/g, 'u')
.replace(/([äÄ])/g, 'ae')
.replace(/([öÖ])/g, 'oe')
.replace(/([üÜ])/g, 'ue')
.replace(/([ß])/g, 'ss')
.toLowerCase()
+
'.' + file_name.split('.').pop();
};

o.o
I'd assign file_name.split('.').pop() to a constant
What's it need to do? Replace the Unicode with ASCII equivalents, obviously. What else?

is that javascript?
If so there is a normalization feature you can use for accented characters I suggest you take advantage of:
397
A: Remove accents/diacritics in a string in JavaScript

Lewis DiamondWith ES2015/ES6 String.Prototype.Normalize(), const str = "Crème Brulée" str.normalize('NFD').replace(/[\u0300-\u036f]/g, "") > 'Creme Brulee' Two things are happening here: normalize()ing to NFD Unicode normal form decomposes combined graphemes into the combination of simple ones. The è of ...

11:07 AM
Does depend what version of JS you can expect, though

Right. This isn't supported in IE11 for example.
There is however a polyfill for it: github.com/walling/unorm/blob/master/lib/unorm.js

If your users are all recent Firefox/Chrome, you're good

@Magisch I found something, part of node.js package I use, so not my own doing:
function convert (b) {
    var tb = ((1 << 30) * 1024), gb = 1 << 30, mb = 1 << 20, kb = 1 << 10, abs = Math.abs(b);
    if (abs >= tb) return (Math.round(b / tb * 100) / 100) + 'tb';
    if (abs >= gb) return (Math.round(b / gb * 100) / 100) + 'gb';
    if (abs >= mb) return (Math.round(b / mb * 100) / 100) + 'mb';
    if (abs >= kb) return (Math.round(b / kb * 100) / 100) + 'kb';
    return b + 'b';
}
Bit more elegant than what you wrote, but same idea.

> Given that the current CEO's only participation on meta since forever was to post a highly controversial, off-topic post about politics in January 2017, start from there - that's not exactly how you lead by example. The post made a whole lot of customers lose further confidence in the company, even among those who agreed with the political, off-topic content.
I thought the CEO was active or something. Was that the old CEO?

Joel isn't that active

Naw. Joel isn't that active

@ArtOfCode can't contain any special character, any control characters, spaces, unicode characters or uppercase letters

Oh, my mistake. I thought I saw him around more. huh

And tbh it's not politics that's the problem

11:35 AM
I know that was just a one-off thing.

>
But what does SO the company do? Completely ignore everything said. Instead the focus during the past 2 years has been mostly peripheral projects like Documentation, Teams, Careers, Developer story, top/bottom/side bars, Welcome Wagons.

@Magisch looks like a good PPCG question...

That I agree with

Yeah same.

And that a few key parts of the community have been neglected

11:37 AM
And bug reports ignored, etc.

@andmyself nah, more like a trivial regex

Well if we mean bugs in site mechanics...

Well like the bug I was telling you about before with small monitors or windows.
I think I told you at least, where it squishes everything obscenely flat?

The legacy system using the filenames is using some weird as hell system for daisy-chaining cmd.exe calls to multiple custom scripts that all don't properly escape their stuff either
@JourneymanGeek That's a function of the CM team being at least 3 people smaller then it ought to be though

lol

11:42 AM
@Magisch yup
But that is probably going to need upper level buy in to fix

not likely

I mean, it's not like there is any lack of quality - and it would be a pretty meaningful gesture

It'd certainly help regain lost trust.

@Magisch well idk what the internal conversations there are

Yeah but from reading between the lines recently and with what Jon said about meta some time ago it seems like that the core userbase isn't exactly popular with management and staff in general right now

11:46 AM
Here's my worry: In the new Meta post, everyone is saying the profiles are fine as they are, or require only very trivial changes, and are even begging not to have it changed drastically. I have this nagging feeling that, after a little while, a new Meta post will come up thanking us profusely for our feedback but massively changing profiles in a way that everyone hates (and complains about for weeks).
Due to SE's lost trust so far, I'm getting that sentiment from a lot of people.

@Magisch well - funny thing is I get the opposite
That they realize that things are pretty bad
And there's been a fair bit of management turnover

@JourneymanGeek I'm no insider and not very good at recognizing intent in general but there is no ambiguity that the core userbase is viewed as problematic & uncooperative by staff right now

Which is unfortunate, since the core userbase literally makes up the site.

This is especially true because a seemingly vocal part of it does not share in the personal politics that a lot of the employees share (nothing wrong with that, it's just an observation)

@Magisch I think they (we?) are considered as bunch of noisy people who complain a lot. Not sure it's bad. :)
Without complaining and making noise, nothing will be done as we want it to be done. No?

11:50 AM
and with how divisive & polarized politics is getting lately and because stack is not an echo chamber and really diverse in terms of viewpoints, there's a lot of "undesirable" viewpoints represented

There'd be less complaining if staff took in feedback. :P
@Magisch What do you mean? There's not a lot of politics on SE.

Eh, I'd tend to agree with JMG that SE is seeing how little trust people have in them at the moment and are working to remedy it

I hope that's true but I can easily see a EA-type "You're all wrong and uneducated and we won't stand for that" kind of response coming if things blow up again

inb4 Stack Exchange Inc. is acquired by Activision.

@Magisch it's worth looking at it at another perspective
A few years back -. Q&A was basically a functional, finished product. Communities were mostly self running with minimal need for intervention
Stuff worked then

11:55 AM
But it's not all doom & gloom. With or without top level management buy in, we have MSE mods now, the site is still pretty good overall, there haven't been any catastrophic changes, and even considering all recent drama it's still remarkably drama free overall

But well you actually need to maintain community relations
And that's been a bit of a fail

Eventually, a pissed off community reaches criticality and explodes, even if it, at the moment, is relatively calm and just grumbling about being screwed over.

We kinda had a more efficient system for normal stuff that breaks down during exceptions
And dosen't have a good pre-emptive feedback loop

You still have better PR than Blizzard :P

We have good folks

11:58 AM
we have good CMs
nobody of us knows senior management and/or most of the devs

@JohnDvorak But Blizzard doesn't pretend to be accepting feedback like SE. :P
They're honest about hating their customers.

not disputing that they too might be really good (probably are) but we have no way of knowing

@Magisch yup
But also there were much fewer
And the PMs. Poor chaps :p

>probably are

@Magisch I'd actually like to see more CMs. And kinda oddly maybe a few from outside our core userbase

12:03 PM
@ArtOfCode I'm curious about your opinion on ternary expressions in javascript, e.g a ? : a : 'not a' vs if (a) { a } else { 'not a' }, because my coworkers really champion them (eg use them everywhere you concievably can, to the point of sometimes layering them within each other)

@Magisch well they are probably kick-ass devs but they don't decide what's the next priority
From what I grok - the project managers have a lot more weight there

Kick-ass devs who don't know how to modify a simple stylesheet and have to lie to us about what is easy and what is hard to maintain? O_o

I don't think Joe had a good experience on meta thought

I mean devops is probably not useless. It's not like the site goes down a lot...

@forest see. You have trouble with the concept of assume good intentions...

12:06 PM
I assume their intentions are good. I just don't have faith in their competence.

Heh. The SRE team is vaguely verging on legendary actually

@JourneymanGeek ?

@ShadowWizard The guy who runs it basically wrote the book on being a sysadmin. Literally. And used to run Google's SRE team

@forest I'm pretty sure you're not seeing the full picture on that

@Magisch All I'm seeing is staff claiming that it's too difficult to maintain custom vote icons, when it turns out the vote icons are part of the same image resource as custom badges (which we do get to keep).

12:18 PM
@JourneymanGeek Tanya Reilly?

@Magisch good things, but not to be overused
if they take up more than one line or are nested, you should probably use an if/else instead

@ShadowWizard Tom Limoncelli

My current strategy for keeping my hands warm is to take a hot drink. Unfortunately, I tend to drink hot drinks relatively quickly. This maaaay mean that I have had way too much sugar and caffeine today...

@JourneymanGeek oh. But he's not new.... quite the opposite. Unless I miss something here?
@Mithrandir caffeine free tea, with no sugar. Problem solved. ;)

@ShadowWizard nope

12:32 PM
No sugar?! What blasphemy is this?

But in general they're a good, fairly competent bunch

@Mithrandir eat a waffle instead. Or a cookie. ;)

I haven't had waffles in like eight years

@Mithrandir so time you'll have them again! :D

12:34 PM
They're impossible to find here...

Hard to believe... any market has them.

Actually I don't have any major complaints outside the old marketing team

Any market in Tel Aviv, maybe... not in the Golan.

@Mithrandir surely there are in markets in Kiryat Shmone... just go there, buy a stock, and you're done. :D

Eh... a lot of work for a waffle.
