yep, but as the dog can tell you, we already noticed that being spam account is not enough to get them removed if they don't post and just link spam in their profile
so we just limit ourselves to report only the most offensive cases.
Super User got hit by another batch of spammers creating profiles. They've got accounts on other sites from what I've heard from other mods and from the comments here.
Last time it was streaming. Now it's insurance sales... with phone numbers (as of december, looks like they're spamming scammy f...
The point is that the perceived damage potential is still low compared to other form of abuse, so moderation force tends to focus on other more urgent issues
obviously, that is rapidly subverted if for example the user avatar is NSFW, offensive etc...
@Derpy you don't even need that to be creative. There's plenty of innocent stuff that, when scaled down to SE avatar size, manages to set off dirty minds ;)
Fun stats: 10,000 people per year report being bitten by a spider in the USA. 400,000 people per year report being bitten by a cat in the USA, and it's suspected many more cases go unreported. Now tell me, which of the two is more rational to be afraid of?
Often spider bites don't contain venom even if they come from venomous spiders. The spider is trying to make you aware of its presence, and they know that angering humans goes contrary to their chances of survival.
@JohnDvorak Even when they do contain venom, they contain a very small dose. The spider wants to save it all for creatures that they need to eat. Of course, some very young spiders will inject the entire dose, which is why black widows are more dangerous when they're young than when they're adults.
Humans aren't even the only species that wage war. We're just a little more organized and methodological than most other species which do... Also we got guns.
@ShadowWizard Not to mention, a cat biting when not playing is its way of saying "you're scaring me, bugger off". Reporting it to get it killed for its inability to politely ask you to stop is... cruel beyond measure.
@forest If any animal that belongs to someone bites me without reason, I'll report it, as it doesn't belong on the streets. If any animal that doesn't belong to anyone does that, I'll take care of it myself ;)
And yeah if an animal is attacking you, self defense is fine.
Even if you kill it. But doing it when you're totally safe? Just cruel.
@ShadowWizard People have been doxed and swatted before for insulting cats on the internet. It's not just ancient Egyptians who hold cats in the highest regards.
@Tinkeringbell nope: I meant that some sites let the user save a bigger image for its avatar, then only display a smaller section of that. The final result is that the site uses css to only display a smaller rectangle of a bigger image that still gets loaded.
@forest I think I already clarified that remark before: I'm talking about animals I'm not interacting with, random bites. Those should be reported, and the animal taken care of.
@forest Honestly, that shouldn't matter. If someone else has a cat and isn't taking care that it can't bite me, I will take care that it won't bite me again.
@Derpy think I saw somewhere that it can be done with actual image, to save it in a way it's showing something but with certain software, you can see the actual image, usually bigger version.
@Tinkeringbell So, suppose you have a NSFW image, the user "crop" it to only display a smaller, apparently innocent square. But the full image is still loaded.
@Bart It is extremely cruel. Cats rely on their claws for defense. Not having them forces them to rely only on their teeth (which some people apparently will use as an excuse to get them killed).
@Tinkeringbell I will only say that near where I live there is a street that is pretty famous for having wild boars visit the houses trash bins. Some persons were attacked by those boars. That didn't stop anyone to give a fine to those who fought back and tried to hunt/kill those boars. But yep, probably missunderstood
@ShadowWizard Building some rules, that should make sure no-one is going to register geo spatial objects that don't meet certain requirements. Now there's a few things that can go wrong, like 'no_name', 'no_date' (but a bit more complicated). Co-worker (the 'nice' one) wants me to add a list of those possible error_codes to the code (so hard code them)... Just so he can run a script on that code/class that turns out that info for the wiki page we also have to write...
I find it stupid, because it doesn't make sense to write that down hard-code. If something changes it's just another thing you have to remember to change, especially as no code will break if you don't.
And I don't see how it's less work to write it down in the code instead of in the wiki.
This will be really like adding a List<String> of possible error codes to the class though, without any further info, and without the class actually ever using it :/
@Derpy oh. Yep. More like "ways to upload image so that imgur fails to create proper thumbnail, thus storing original image as thumbnail", which would lead to animation showing.
