This seems to be a new strain, same as Lucy Garrett yesterday. Same account is used for posting on two sites, Meta and Drupal. However, only once on each site, so blacklist still doesn't help.
Lots of New Year's spam, it seems
user259867
Trivia note - this post ID is 19014, and the ID of the previous ads thread was 11920. That means that in the span of a bit over a year (rather close to 13 months, really), over 7000 posts have been made to the Mathematics Meta site. That's the highest amount in that time span on the network, towering over Ask Ubuntu's ~4600 sitting in second place. — Grace Note ♦ 3 hours ago

200_successI think you've gotten the time zone handling wrong: In your description, you say that it performs a countdown in your local time zone. What it actually seems to be doing is a countdown for the next standard time zone that will experience the new year. That makes the timer useless for resident...

But then : how on Earth has this kind of knowledge survived the ages, so that nearly a century ago, it is implemented in software ? In 2011, anyone who mention timezone oddities to a non-software engineer is looked upon like a nerd. (And really, people expect all software to abstract it, and they don't give a damn if it's ambigous, when they say 'noon', we software engineer should deal with it). But to imagine someone in Shangai, in December 1927, thinking it would be relevant to note such a thing down, and that somehow this information was never lost, deleted, anything ... mind's blown. — phtrivier Jul 30 '11 at 16:28

Time zones are really pain, especially when you are making a chat app, in which you have to show the "time" and "n minutes ago" with messages, in a group of people chatting, who are in different time zones

@InfiniteSnowflakes I think one of us must be misunderstanding the other here, but I'm not exactly sure which.
@InfiniteSnowflakes Does it come across that I'm asking for a feed to be added to a room rather than asking SE for a new feature?
If you've got any suggestions for how to rephrase the question to make it clearer I'm all ears
15:58
I think it will be intruisive. The current system allows RO to add any rss feed for a room, so if a room has 20 regulars, an RO can add their feeds . But your proposal says anyone who visited the room within the past XYZ hours, all their posts on the main site should be presented as a feed in the room looks like a bad idea. @JackDouglas
For example, Martijn has a lot of posts on MSE and he visited here today, if all his posts for the next 48 hours get fed in this room, it can be intruisive for everybody else @JackDouglas
@InfiniteSnowflakes I guess you wouldn't have the room feed in this room then?
But I did not realise any rss could be added
So what I'm really asking for is a specialized rss feed to be made available for each room
Why does it need to be in a chat room?
I understood what you are asking for, but unfortunately I find it intruisive. I disagree with this part "while we're chatting, we're not creating/improving content and making the internet a better place to find answers."
@InfiniteSnowflakes I was paraphrasing one of the SE team
@InfiniteSnowflakes looks like an average of about 1 per day peaking at 3 or 4
> In aggregate, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer is still the most popular browser in the world
What?
16:07
@JackDouglas Maybe I'm here in chat to relax a bit from all the drama on main ...
@InfiniteSnowflakes Though I do agree that all oneboxs are intrusive - I kind of like David's suggestion
@rene I'm not saying all rooms would want the feed, but I know of some that would. This being your room, you'd get to decide here of course...
@Doorknob冰 I told you so...
They must have count @rene as a million of users to make that statement true...
@Doorknob冰 something wrong must be on the source netmarketshare.com
IE took a very steep dip in december
It isn't about oneboxes, it is about intrusion. You are forcing everyone in the chatroom to look at it, but what do you want them to do with it? If a few people are interested in a user's feed, they can individually subscribe to it, else an RO can add it manually for the room. But automating the feed to provide the posts of all the participants of a room is intruisive. As @rene already said, chat is more informal.
16:14
> The data is compiled from approximately 160 million visitors per month.
Looking at a post just because it is from UserX shifts the focus from content to the user.
yeah, right, how you explain that suddenly ~20 mill just switched browsers
@JackDouglas sure, but I can easily see this evolve into chatroom votingrings something that now already happens
Also, a lot of users will enter and leave just to have their feed posted into the room. Just more janitor work for everybody.
@rene yeah, I mentioned that angle in my post, but some sites are more concerned about declining expert participation
@InfiniteSnowflakes set the rep limit high and that wont happen.
16:19
@JackDouglas Even high rep users can abuse the system in the same way, your proposed solution doesn't solve the problem.
If you really care, write a userscript. That is pretty much all you can do.
@Unihedro er, I can make a feature request
please just consider that other sites might be different to M.SE
eg there is very little 'drama' on main on DBA.SE
@JackDouglas This "might" thing does not warrant a feature to cover partial communities.
@JackDouglas Ok, that is a valid concern that has everything to do with quality of the posts. How would your proposal help in that sense? Are the high-rep users running because of lack of attention or because of all the crap is coming in?
And the feedback they receive if they share their knowledge to new users?
And I'm not talking about MSE but about SO.
@Jack comments are not for discussions, chat rooms are, so I'm going to respond to your comment here:
@Unihedro that won't feed posts only when you are in the room though, right? — Jack Douglas 4 mins ago
> "in the room" could mean one of several things, I don't mind which:

just 'in the room' according to the list
any chat message in the last 24h/week/month
Your comment is kind of contrary with your main post.
@rene what I do know is that the DBA.SE chat room is full of experts that chat regularly and sometimes I wish the chat room there was a little more connected with main - as I say, some chat rooms may well not want to be connected with main and that is fine, but others need a bit more of that. I could set up feeds for dozens of users manually, but my feature request is to make that a lot easier.
@Unihedro in what way?
16:27
@JackDouglas You mentioned "that won't feed posts only when you are in the room though, right?" - a rhetorical question which hints your feature cannot be fulfilled using the conventional RO feeds, while in your post you mentioned you don't mind whether the feeds are posted as a user only being within the room, but also the presence of chat messages.
So, you can build a robot.
But not really, this is achievable with the conventional way.
It's weird seeing all the "answered January 31 '14 at 1:56"
@Unihedro I'm trying to connect the folk in the chat room with main. I think the effect will be achieved by including those with recent chat messages or those currently in the room, or maybe both - none of that is possible with the current feeds I believe.
@TheGuywithTheElfHat The GitHub contributions punchcard is also kinda broken. It continues from Jan 1 '14 after Dec 31.
... which confused me at first when I saw someone who contributed on Jan 4, before I found out that was in 2014.
Yeah.
Even if you contribute today, it doesn't update the punchcard.
16:30
@JackDouglas "I'm trying to connect the folk in the chat room with main." - Then use a userscript. You're not helping, but forcing. Based on how this is going to be implemented, if the room enables this, there's no opting out.
"I think the effect will be achieved by including those with recent chat messages or those currently in the room, or maybe both" - How did you conclude this? I think this effect will not be achieved, putting up a banner "let's be friends, click here to subscribe to a mailing list where we send you links to posts we've made every 5 hours" is more practical compared, in my honest opinion.
Also, Stack Exchange is a big city, it's not that everyone pops into a chat room and immediately wants to get to know each other.
Chat and main sites are two different places. Chat users will leave if the room if filled with 20 feeds (assuming 1 feed each for 20 users). Chat gets less traffic, you don't want to scare those few people who spare their time and participate in chat by posting feed in the room. Remember that rep and badges are an incentive on the main site, chat has no such incentive, so don't try to scare people away from chat @JackDouglas
I really not like the idea of the focus on users. I woud be fine with it if it was for a tag, recent votes, comment wars type of feeds. So if it comes down to an easier way of creating feeds of posts for chatrooms that filter based on some criteria I'm fine with it. If it is only to connect specific users I'm not a fan for the sake of the overall SE Network. But I can see that it might help for smaller groups/sites like DBA.SE.
On smaller site, why can't RO add the feed manually? You say it's a small place, few users, so spare some time and add the feeds. It doesn't take more than 30 seconds to add the feed of a user. Multiply it by the number of users.
As @uni said, a userscript can handle it.
@JackDouglas Let me put it more concisely: This is not practical.
I'm going to put together an answer because I suddenly feel the need to.
@InfiniteSnowflakes but that would require constant moderation, I can see that point of the argument.
16:42
15 mins ago, by Unihedro
So, you can build a robot.
