@PopularDemand I hate that suggestion of yours encouraging more comments moderation by the way

@badpssockpuppet Why?

@PopularDemand I'm trying to form coherent thoughts about it, but comments are a free for all area you must earn access to; they're the last refuge, and the correct refuge, for anything that isn't precisely correctly completely a question or an answer. Banning noise won't make noise go away.

@badpssockpuppet I see what you're saying. It all comes down to what level of noise is acceptable to the community. We all hate spam, and that gets flagged to oblivion as soon as it's posted. So we have the manpower to obliterate these comments. I don't know if people will get on board with defining "noise" more restrictively, but that's what the question is for.

For example I regret having cleared comments on this post
Without comments, Oak's revision seems like vandalism

@Jin is there an overview of SE sites you have provided with a design?

9:06 PM
I've been convinced into deleting the comments where the OP and the mod discuss this big edit, with the OP agreeing with the mod.

Should we start one on Meta?

...so I put a dismissive-sounding replacement comment.

What the... "Tweeted"?

It's hardly a replacement however.
@PopularDemand Did you only now notice?

@badpssockpuppet I've never seen it before in a revision history and I don't use twitter.

9:08 PM
Well, MSO doesn't get tweeted. That's probably it. :P
Gaming has little enough questions that tweeted questions are relatively frequent

@badpssockpuppet and if any site should be...

Can someone tell me, my rep for today on a particular site is +234, but the rep cap exceeded only says 1 day, so it hasn't gone up since yesterday?
it was 1 day yesterday

@xiaohouzi79 the day is not yet over
I think this is calculated 0000 GMT
or later

What he said ^^^^

so the exceeded calc is done at 0000, oh OK
cause the rep cap was reached already says 2 days
but days represented only says 1

9:13 PM
@xiaohouzi79 There's still time to offer a 500-pt bounty and destroy your chances of exceeding.
(Yes, I did that once.)

ok, thanks, will check back after the day ends

@xiaohouzi have you earned 200 "regular" points though?
I think you need those to fulfill "exceeded"
regular = not from accepted answers

yep, I already have the rep cap was reached == 2 days

Q: How is it possible to reach the rep cap without exceeding it?

Popular DemandOkay, based only the title, the answer is obvious... allow me to explain. According to Jeff's statements under this question, the definitions of "reaching the rep cap" and "exceeding the rep cap" are as follows: reached: earned 200 or more rep purely from upvotes in one day exceeded: earned 20...

A: PHP 2-way encryption: I need to store passwords that can be retrieved

ircmaxellPersonally, I would use mcrypt like others posted. But there is much more to note... How do I encrypt and decrypt a password in PHP? See below for a strong class that takes care of everything for you: What is the safest algorithm to encrypt the passwords with? safest? any of them. The safe...

tl;dr: Downvote
;)

Ha! well played good sir

Thanks all

@xiaohouzi79 you're welcome. I hope this helped
I'm having massive trouble understanding those rules myself
i.e. the difference between "reached" and "exceeded"

@PopularDemand Unless you get 500 points worth of accepted answers... Which would be interesting none the less...
reached == earned 200 rep in one day

9:18 PM
@ircmaxell New life goal.

exceeded == earned >= 201 rep in one day
reached from upvotes only == earned 20 +1 upvotes

@Pekka Reached: get upvotes worth 200 rep in one day; Exceeded: earn 200 net rep in one day.

@PopularDemand so exceeded = 110 from upvotes + 90 from accepts, for example?

I still don't know what effect the +2 for accepting an answer (cf. the +15 for having an answer accepted) or the +2 for suggesting a good edit have.

@Popular yeah, that would have been my next question

9:20 PM
@Pekka Assuming no downvotes, yes.

@PopularDemand I hit 350 one day without a bounty (so 150 worth of accepted answers)

@PopularDemand fair enough. My next question would have been, what about the -1 from downvotes on other posts... But I assume those don't break "reached" because upvotes don't "refill" those as they do the negative rep from received downvotes

@Pekka Right. Your total rep doesn't matter for reached; just the number of upvotes you got.

Right. Makes sense.

Somewhere at SO HQ, someone just cursed as he was eliminated from the office pool on how many times people will discuss reached vs. exceeded before giving up and doing something productive.

9:23 PM
Hi again! :)

@Nyuszika7H Hi!

I'm so disappointed.
Saw a link on Meta to the new fitness.SE site, and immediately thought one of my followed proposals had somehow made it through without my notice. Oh, what a difference an e makes...

Fitnesse and Nutrition?

wonders where the e is different

@ircmaxell Fitness != FitNesse

9:32 PM
Ahhh, it's not a real word...
gets it

I'm trying to get jQuery to submit a form.
it's not working
What are common gotchas?

has come to the conclusion that jQuery is a bad tool since it contains one major fubar aspect (IMHO)...

Well, first there's PEBCAK

function showNextSection(){

//hide the current section if it exists and
//if the next one exists. This is to prevent
//a "flash" or "flicker" when there is no next
//section and alerts are enabled
if(sectionExists(currentlyVisibleSection) && sectionExists(currentlyVisibleSection+1)){
hideFormSection(currentlyVisibleSection);
}

//increment the next section
currentlyVisibleSection++;

//if the section does not exist, decrement the current section
if(!sectionExists(currentlyVisibleSection)){

$('#id_raffle_form').submit();

And then, I haven't touched jQuery lately.

9:35 PM
@ircmaxell It's been nice knowing you.

error: function( msg ) {
		throw msg;
	}

@ircmaxell grabs pliers and blowtorch

Why should you ever be able to override a throw statement. That has major potential for fubar stuff...
For example, imagine the horror that would ensue if you did $.error = $.noop.

uh...

@ircmaxell There are infinite snippets of code that satisfy the statement "imagine the horror that would ensue if you did _____"

9:40 PM
@MichaelMrozek would know; he's tried them all.

Ok, fair enough - it has the potential for someone to really screw it up. But... Overriding the internal error handler isn't exactly the sort of common use-case that I would generally hate on a lib for.

Jin
@pekka what do you mean by overview?

Well, if they did throw $.error(msg); and have error() do nothing but return, I could agree with that. But ever having the ability to override throw which is used all over the core is really bad IMHO

@Moshe Are you assuming that submit() won't return?

And my definition of bad is very different from most. I'm saying from an architectural and code-quality, rather than usability

9:43 PM
@Jin a gallery of sorts was my idea
It 's becoming really difficult to keep track if you're interested in the designs, but not necessarily every SE site
It's not terribly essential to have a list of them, but it could be nice, maybe as a Meta question

@Shog9 Yes, i think I got it.
@Shog9 If JS is enabled, I want the user to see a dynamic response from the server, not the action page of the form element.
Otherwise we use the backwards compatible form.

@Pekka meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/90244/worship-jin-here?

@PopularDemand yeah
Maybe on Religion.SE

"The site with the least votes will get a redesign when there's a lull in the site launch queue!"

@Jin - Personally, I liked the Physics site. Sorry to see it go.

9:47 PM
@Moshe Gah! I didn't even know that had happened. That was my favorite design

Can the Physics April Fool's joke be that the site reverts to the dark theme every other page load?

Woo! Haven't hat tricked in a long time.

@MichaelMrozek Well why do you think Jeff asked for a minimal theme?

asaTime was, Macs crashed a lot. (Maybe PCs did too, but I've only ever used Macs). And over time, I became wary of doing two things at once. I've got it. I finally got it. I'm going to be rich. I'm amazed nobody has thought of this before. I'll be famous.

Wouldn't this be the right way to trigger sound? $("#jplayer").jPlayer("play"); it isn't working for me

@TimPost Me too! I just need some startup capital, which clearly won't be a problem for you....

9:51 PM
I have invented BASH ON RAILS. It's going to be huge!

@PopularDemand SuperUser?!

Jin
@pekka you can check out stackexchange.com/sites

@TimPost "BOR"...probably should have gone with a better acronym. yawns

Jin
The none sketchy ones are the launched sites with their final designs

9:53 PM
@TimStone ...what?

He wants all of your eye candy in an easy-to-scan place, I think. But I suppose the non-lazy route works too :P

@TimPost Better idea: jQuery Assembly instructions!
JQRY eax ebx

@Jin ah, "launched site = has design" works in most cases - hadn't thought of that, that works fine.

@PopularDemand Erm...Do you agree that it should have been moved there, or?

@TimStone I just find it amusing that someone would avoid the "which site?" problem entirely by choosing all of them.

9:56 PM
@TimStone I'll make it a framework that GENERATES A WHOLE OTHER FRAMEWORK! Awsome idea! It will be the (B)ash (O)n (R)ails (G)enerator, or BORG.
And recursive for BORG only requires GNU

@PopularDemand Oh, I didn't realize that they had cross-posted it on SU. I was confused by the people who voted to migrate it to SU from SO.
@TimPost Brilliant!

@Pekka Except Physics as of now

@Moshe yeah, I just read the discussion, too bad
But dark backgrounds are difficult... Interested to see the next suggestion!

@Pekka Indeed.
@Pekka - Are you at all available to do translation, btw?

@TimPost this is the chance to bring grumpy Linux admins and tech startup hipsters together on one platform. I want to buy some shares

10:03 PM
eyes the "by"

@Moshe unfortunately, not currently! My to-do list is still four screens tall :(
"Summer" is a more realistic time-frame right now....
But I'm open to answering questions here if individual questions come up, no problem

@Pekka Ok
So perhaps I'll study some German. I have a book.
I do enjoy languages

@Moshe nice!

Yea, but I'm two days behind on this webpage...

The Nippon one?

@PopularDemand now you just need to wait a few more months to keep it up

@badpssockpuppet Well, yeah, I wouldn't want to sprain anything.

Home Improvement launched, hmmm...

@TimStone Damn you Chrome 11 bug! shakes fist

@TimStone Hmmm? How did that happen?

10:21 PM
@Pekka No, something for school
@YiJiang - I need jQuery help.
I'm trying to invoke a form submission, but it's not working

@YiJiang That's a good question. The CSS there is just silly anyway, I figure that has something to do with it.
It's fixable, but since it only happens in Chrome dev and I'm too lazy to figure out what the expected behaviour is there, I'll save myself the trouble and just ignore it, heh.

Okay, fixed
An <input type="submit"> with an id of "submit" breaks things.

@TheRenamedException Just checking.
I have just learned that only mods can propose version-specific tag synonyms.
I tried to propose -->
Any distinction in meaning they may have once had seems to have evaporated.
I did propose --> though.

Hey guys

@PopularDemand Wow; did not know that

10:51 PM
I added a comment pointing them at our FAQ for what we allow don't allow.

My browser keeps scrolling from top to bottom everytime someone posts.
Including me

@MichaelMrozek Proving, once again, that I am the superior MSO user.

Hi Jacob

@Jacob Welcome. I'd ofer you a drink but, well... how about a root beer ;-)
@ArlenBeiler refresh, that should fix it

Test
Test after Shift+Refresh
Doesn't seem to have helped.
But it does it a lot faster.
So that helps a lot.

10:56 PM
@ArlenBeiler CTRL+F5?

@ArlenBeiler hmmm... to the wheel of blame then!

@TheRenamedException - ping

Test with Ctrl+F5.

OK I AM BACK. EVERYONE REFRESH!

What's a good name for a DB table?

my own little DB table! I will name him George, and I will query him and drop him...

@TheOutOfStarsException lol sure

I do cinnamon coffee

chilled coffee :547277

I kind of like coffee flavored coffee

@TimPost thats like saying 1=1 its kinda like trying to be smart but failing at faking :)

11:16 PM
@TimPost Me too. That's why I add Kahlua!

OK. One Cinnamon coffee for @Moshe and a root beer for @Jacob

@TheOutOfStarsException I'm brewing it now

Hey maybe my SAN was down all morning but at least my new name cheers me up ;-)

Sarsaparilla!

Hey @Grace, how goes?

11:17 PM
Namuch. You?

@TheOutOfStarsException - Expiry can be combined, yes?

@GraceNote eh, recovering from a rough day :-p

@Jacob - In many cases, 1 != 1, but your compiler thinks 1 == 0.999999999999999999 is close enough.

Ahoy, @Gray Warden.

Haa, I know how that feels, @Theou.

11:20 PM
@GraceNote LOL, I have gone from @There to @Theou

You were originally @Theun. Which was a cool name
@There was just a very hilarious change of... some... language construct that I'm too lazy to remember the name of

@TimPost Its been a long while since I was a programmer :)

@GraceNote And now @Theou reminds me of Thoreau
EVen thought it's not really like his name at all, LOL

No, it isn't. But now I'm thinking about Thoreau

@TheOutOfStarsException stop changing your name... Please?

11:22 PM
Haven't had to do that since high school

@Jacob Okay. For 30 days ;-)

@TheOutOfStarsException everytime you change your name your quote goes up :)

Gah. I haven't refreshed, and I had no idea what you all were talking about.

@TheOutOfStarsException Join SA.SE proposal? :)

@Jacob You clearly do not know who you're speaking to ;-)

11:24 PM
Ooh, @Pop, @Theou only changed name just now?

@TheOutOfStarsException that should be your newname.... :)
I know who you are :)

It's confusing because my name is less interesting elsewhere
@GraceNote just moments ago, yes
I like to keep @PopularDemand on his toes

The I OWE Exception

Josh isn't that uninteresting

Thanks Grace :-)

11:26 PM
I have no idea what you're all talking about.

@GraceNote It's pretty uninteresting.

@Shog9 But it's a verb! All kinds of prime candidate for obnoxious punnery

@GraceNote yes, but then tomorrow you've heard them all and...

bah.

@GraceNote I thought so at first, but it looks like a place for questions too subjective for SF

@TimPost Ahha

@TimPost should be called, "Not Server Related"

Every site in the network will end up with a 'fourth place', I can see it now.

@GraceNote I see that I will have to be less awesome to have a chance at keeping you on your toes.

@GraceNote It may be the only site where system administrators actually click up vote.

@Moshe long would be sufficient over int

@drachenstern ReallyLongLong?

11:31 PM
lol

@TimPost You earn rep on SF.....

@PopularDemand Pardon?

As opposed to LongLong in place of Int
the steps should always be byte, short, int, long, longlong, reallylonglong, yougottabekiddingme

@drachenstern long double, FTW.

doublepluslong?

11:32 PM
that's doubleplusgood @GraceNote

Quite

I'm going to start coloring my code with colorful people. u_grace_note_t will be a statically allocated type that something else overwrites frequently :)

Wonders what the percentage of current room participants is that knows the origin and purpose of doubleplusgood by literary pedigree
@TimPost >.> wouldn't that be the method that overwrites other values on a frequent method to inject additional data?

@TimPost As long as I'm always preceeding u_mrozek_t

@GraceNote mrozek_t is most decidedly signed
@drachenstern you mean the Orwellian origin?

11:35 PM
Ah, that's your convention

@TimPost Indeed

Newspeak is a fictional language in George Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. The term was also used to discuss Soviet phraseology. Orwell included an essay about it in the form of an appendix in which the basic principles of the language are explained. Newspeak is closely based on English but has a greatly reduced and simplified vocabulary and grammar. This suits the totalitarian regime of the Party, whose aim is to make any alternative thinking—"thoughtcrime", or "crimethink" in the newest edition of Newspeak—impossible by removing any words or possible constructs which describe the i...

@TimPost shhh, that's the plan for about 4 weeks from today

@drachenstern But I thought the calendar skipped that day.
