@JourneymanGeek In natural uranium, ~0.72% is the abundance (by number of atoms) of U-235, which is the isotope you want for reactors or bombs.

....
so pack a body with enough and
BOOOOOM?

Sure.
But enriching uranium is really hard.
Wiki says the critical mass for a sphere of U-235 is ~52 kg, which has a diameter of ~17 cm. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critical_mass
It was observed that the leftover material in typical uranium ore is still radioactive. The Curies processed a ton of uranium ore to discover radium. They did that processing in their kitchen.

@PM2Ring This was also before the era of women mucking up their health by licking brushes to paint radium dials....
H&S has come a long way
I am still appropriately terrified

Yes. They really didn't understand how dangerous radiation could be. Until people started developing weird cancers at a much higher rate than usual.

Oh
and radium water

3:36 AM
Even radium cigarettes.
OTOH, alpha emitters like uranium & radium are relatively safe. As long as you don't get them inside you.
Even a sheet of paper blocks typical alpha particles. So does skin. But if they're inside soft tissue, they can damage DNA.

Technically if you're being embalmed, you're already dead and can't get extra cancer

Indeed. :) But I didn't know exactly what your 0.7% uranium link was linking to
Marie Curie was buried in a lead-lined coffin, to prevent radioisotopes from leaking into the environment. Her notebooks are in special storage; they're still too radioactive to be handled without protective equipment.
Even smoke particles block alpha particles - that's how most smoke detectors work.
However, when uranium & radium decay, some of their daughter products emit beta and gamma radiation. And that stuff does require serious shielding, especially the gamma.

@PM2Ring there was a photo of the 'product' labelled as such

3:52 AM
I guess uranium oxide could be useful in embalming. It would certainly prevent most bacterial decay. And fungal decay, although many fungi seem to be able to thrive in environments with much higher radiation than most other organisms can.

The idea of it ? Not really. Companies like openAI claiming it'll solve everything and replace a whole range of human artistic, creative and skilled labour? That's a grift. AI is here to stay when its boring and invisible. Also, I'm stating it as an opinion, and that's potentially wrong. I've a very mixed track record on these things, from predicting Gamin should be a wearables company in a term paper(I failed that paper, but turns out I was right) to an aweful lot of tech I think will be cool but end up niche :D. — Journeyman Geek 4 mins ago

I've heard people say it'll win in business where it's cheaper than human labour even if it's not as good

@super-starball-ultra IF its cheaper

I can't remember who said it

currently its subsidised by the fact that big tech is pouring money into it cause they don't want an AI product gap

6:08 AM
well, I'm talking cheaper to the business paying for the AI service- not cheaper at a net level
I can't remember where I heard that position. Maybe Adam Neely in their recent video
@JourneymanGeek lemme type wouldja? xD

@super-starball-ultra Jamie (our former national governmental chatbot) and her younger sisters aside...

@JourneymanGeek touche

Generally the use of chatbots generally results in them breaking them in regretable ways
Jamie was useless

the point was more about stuff that isn't safety critical. more about the entertainment business

Also the housing board instance didn't know if I could use paynow (our common digital payment system) to pay part of the cost of an apartment (I can't)
Also, chatbots as search? askjeeves did natural language search years ago before they went full ad-spammer

@JourneymanGeek lmao
see? entertainment business :D
oh cool I can see when **** goes/went down site analytics on MSE now

hi. mythology.stackexchange.com/users/29/codingenthusiast vandalized a dozen of posts on SO and on Mythology SE. they're already suspended on SO but not yet on Mythology SE. Can someone slap them into the penalty box there too please?

that's need a CM or a mythology mod
You did flag right?

I flagged one of the posts, yes
It's such obvious vandalism that it doesn't need a Mythology domain expert. I also reverted the posts on Mythology.

10:40 AM
@MetaAndrewT. Hey, I'm flying to Indonesia in just over a week. Have you been to Bali, and if so, what are some good places to see there?

1 hour later…
11:44 AM
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Hi! Unfortunately, I haven't been to Bali, so I can't really suggest some good places. But it's an island famous for its beaches and Hindu culture, so I guess they can be an option if you're interested. Enjoy the trip :)

I wonder, where does stackoverflow.jobs gets the list of jobs? Is it just an intermediary between SO and indeed?

12:00 PM
@Petəíŕd The Spring Wizard it's external website that only use Stack Overflow as a signpost.
Nothing there is really related to Stack Overflow.

@ShadowWizardLoveZelda so intermediary.
Then I don't get why people get excited about it, lol.

Pay enough, and SO is yours to use as a signpost, of course.
@Petəíŕd The Spring Wizard except staff? Who? Where?

@ShadowWizardLoveZelda hmm? People just get excited about the Jobs when they were able to access the same jobs in Indeed even without Jobs on SO itself.

@Petəíŕd The Spring Wizard I mean where you saw it?

@ShadowWizardLoveZelda lol well at least people upvote this

12:13 PM
@Petəíŕd The Spring Wizard umm, I don't consider upvotes as being excited. The only user who posted actual excited answer is now suspended for a year. Anyway, the answers there are good, and obviously none got any real reply or attention from staff.
I didn't vote at all (not sure why no downvote, probably felt good that day) and guess people do appreciate the efforts of SE, useless as they might be for them personally. :)

@ShadowWizardLoveZelda huh? Is the answer now deleted?

@Petəíŕd The Spring Wizard yeah, by "the other" Peter, he was also in the Den if you remember.
(he wasn't suspended as result of the answer, it was deleted long before his suspension.)

ahh.
Guess this conversation will be moved to Trashcan....

12:27 PM
@Petəíŕd The Spring Wizard not yet, it's not forbidden to mention that someone is suspended.

hmm to you too!

@ShadowWizardLoveZelda No such command 'hmm'.

:(
eh and Jeremy here too. Coincidence?

Another sign of SE decline, IMO, is the small amount of users here now, in the past major drama would draw LOTS of people here. Now less than 6-8 users who aren't regulars are in Tavern. lol

lol
What are the odds...

1 hour later…
1:58 PM
@ShadowWizardLoveZelda and what would the "dramma" be?

2:15 PM
@ShadowWizardLoveZelda tbf, its not that much drama + chat is too damned hard to find

@SPArcheon just that small matter of SE and OpenAI going hand in hand, against many users wishes and best advise.

@ShadowWizardLoveZelda I mean, I'd rather have SE get paid for the data than have OpenAI take it anyway

@JourneymanGeek but they make it appear bright and sunshine, exciting and promising, while's it's everything but those things.

Did I mention what I thought the play is?

And things like saying OpenAI will embrace responsible AI or whatever salesperson language they're using.... just annoying.

2:21 PM
@ShadowWizardLoveZelda and that SE gets somewhat prioritised in openAI's future search engine, and have some degree of control over what gets linked and how
@ShadowWizardLoveZelda Very much worth stripping out the marketing BS there

@JourneymanGeek sounds good, but totally won't help those who see their content being used against their wishes - I'm not one of those, but annoyed by the way SE is handling isn't handling it.

@ShadowWizardLoveZelda I think the problem there is most regulars are "meh" and most of the public probably dosen't care

It just boils down to the "We do it our way, and that is it" of current management.

Ah so.. one of the the things that annoys me is 1) no one told us 2) I'm still seeing no clear damage mitigation

@JourneymanGeek public outside SE? Of course they don't care, they have no reason to care.

2:24 PM
and this is pretty much one unhappy user's story amplified till it sounds like there's a mass movement

@JourneymanGeek they did tell us, that "responsible AI" post couple of months ago was exactly that.
I mean... it was obvious what comes next. No?

@ShadowWizardLoveZelda I mean to an extent, I'm a little surprised the google drama was less than the openAI one
@ShadowWizardLoveZelda I mean with the sheer levels of marketing BS... I'm expected to keep track? :D
I speak a little managementese, not marketing

yeah
Well Google is linked to "just" anti-privacy, while OpenAI means users feel someone steal their content without their consent, which is worse.

I mean, what's the "OverflowAPI"?

@JourneymanGeek isn't it the mechanism through which the partnerships actually happen? (with both Google and OpenAI)

2:29 PM
\@ShadowWizardLoveZelda literally no one knows :D

The "partner" get access to that API, and gets to read data. Simple. :D

Is it a firehose, is it an optimised data injest method...

@JourneymanGeek secret
aka protected by zillion law papers.

And that's a problem
we don't know what to tell our communities

But best is to assume the worst: the partners get access to everything, all the data ever posted on Stack Overflow, including of course deleted posts.

2:32 PM
so basically... the datadumps? :D

yeah in a spoon-feeding way to read them.
That's what I imagine that API to be. ;)

SE's practically designed around very open data access as I understand

If not, I'd welcome staff saying so.

Well it could just be the API with very very very liberal limits

@JourneymanGeek perhaps, yeah.

2:41 PM
@ShadowWizardLoveZelda oh, sorry, I am enjoying multiple drammas not just on this network at the moment.

@SPArcheon do elaborate. Plz? ;D
@JasonC yes! Now come back.
:P

- OpenAI on Stack,
- people on Anime.SE reminding me of the "Frieren VS Demons" rants on reddit and such (mostly not understanding at all what they are watching IMHO, but also forgive me for being cold but I totally expected this since most "Frieren Fan" discovered that Frieren existed only when they could pirate the anime while the manga went ignored),
- people thinking that "Gushing over ...." is a "funny" anime show
- the "Dragon Plague" rants on Dragon's Dogma 2
- Schrödinger Aerith warfare over FF7: Rebirth
should I add more?
If you want to lose some time, there is plenty of drama to read while eating pop corn.
And none of this is about things that should be taking so much time.

2:55 PM
lol

Especially while we have multiple ongoing wars around the globe.

@SPArcheon of course. ;)
@SPArcheon nah, that's minor.

@SPArcheon I thought the dragon plague one was old, I know about the helldivers one cause wierdly the cyberpunk discord I've been hanging out in has been ranting about it, and people gushing over fieren a loooot

@JourneymanGeek well, it is probably doused out by now. I stumbled on that because I was reading about the game "pawn" system.
That - on paper - looked kinda like the Arfasys in SAO.
But Arfa was wholesome and cozy, this can't be cozy if the game gimiks force you to kill the companions to "cure" the plague.

and bring them back to life
and if you don't it'll total NPC kill the entire town when you rest

3:03 PM
@JourneymanGeek and getting free scars in the process.
what an useless mechanic

I think they made it more obvious now

@JourneymanGeek I fear you missed part of what I mean if you linked "Gushing" to "Frieren". The issue with Frienren is people not understanding things and then going on with "Racist Frieren" rants (that managed to reach us). The other one... if you don't know, don't look into it.

oh
gushing is another anime?
....
Ok, if its what google suggested, that's kinda wieerrrrdddd
Also you underestimate the wierdness quotient of the communities I've been a part of :D

@JourneymanGeek Short version, it is a manga/anime about a sadist girl. But that is not even the main issue.
The issue is that in most countries the manga cover is made to make it look like a PARODY funny manga.
The description is purposely cut of so that the remaining line make it look like it was played out in a comical way. It is not.

ah
the wikipedia description looks disturbing, the google image previews are ... vaguely porny
so I got an idea its a bit fishy

3:12 PM
And I can personally tell you that I have seen multiple customers picking it up at one local comic store, looking at the description on the cover, going thru a few pages thinking it was a complete different story... and then putting it down.

@JourneymanGeek The description on the manga is this one:
> Hiiragi Utena has always looked up to magical girls and fantasized about transforming into a cool heroine who fights evil. So, when a doll-like figure approaches her one evening, claiming that she has magical power lying dormant within, she trembles in excitement. But her colorful dream is quickly shattered in an ironic turn of events when she transforms into a villain!
As you can see it stops at "in an ironic turn of events when she transforms into a villain"
since they say "ironic" you expect this is a funny thing like "she becomes the 'monster of the week' and hates it and tries to boycott the villains"
not "and she discovers she likes being a mean sadist"

yeah, I get the idea from google
basically it needs a CW/TW

Obviously... that is avoiding the fact that IMHO we didn't needed such manga in the first place.

I mean some people might. :D
When I was in the army, I accidentally ended up being the unit lockbreaker, if someone left the unit without clearing out their locker...
I once found a giant stash of ... lets just say extra spicy comics...
and I was like "Ok, I'm taking a walk, I really hope this vanishes"
:D

3:18 PM
that's why I said IMHO. That is also part of the point about hypocrisy in one of the other lines up there.

\o/
I get the (jail?)bait and switch and get what you're getting at ;)

@JourneymanGeek not sure you do, I am mostly amused at all the effort about censoring clothes while other games get no clothes and bears... And I think I'll stop here, if you know what I refer too good, if not... do yourself a favor and don't look into it

... games?
Are you talking about stellar blade? :D

@JourneymanGeek correct. That and the huge warfare the censorship caused.
If you really are THAT interested, I commented about the issue on the bridge.

not really
but I vaguely recall skimming about that

3:26 PM
Short version: can't care less about the game, not my thing. I still find kinda funny irritating in a way that you can clearly see two different "moral scales" being applied to different games, and usually you notice a pattern in "is the game Japanese/Western?"

yup
also meh, if you don't want to see something... don't ?

@JourneymanGeek Look, I can kinda understand the whole issues with objectification and all the rest, I totally do.
But then can you explain me why do some TV quiz show here have side dancers that are less clothed than the Stellar Blade protagonist?
At least the game had a M rating as opposed to your next "Who wants to be a millionaire" clone

I disagree with the AI partnership so much! I contribute my answers to help other programmers like me who when they were starting out, or maybe not just starting out, but either way were looking for a solution. I did not volunteer to spend the hours I have writing my answers just to help OpenAI make more money.

5:41 PM
@JourneymanGeek omg tell me more
@CPlus It kinda keeps happening and it will probably kill the internet at some point
People join up in an online group activity because it'd be fun or something. After a while they find out they're being exploited.
SO is hardly the first company that will earn $ by exploiting the efforts of millions of users.

6:39 PM
grabs popcorn and waits when the profile will change
scaring everyone away with my beard

6:55 PM
@Petəíŕd The Spring Wizard AAAAA

@CPlus The way I see it, at least with a business deal the company has some control over it, and can make them attribute and such. Dishonest use of SE content has been around at least as long as I am, so many sites that copied content (with or without bad machine translations) in an attempt to make money off it...
I hate the whole "AI making money off it" just as much, I think the part that irks me most is that AI companies are more likely to put stuff that's out there for free behind a paywall and humans are dumb enough to pay for it...
At least the copycat sites I know of didn't do that. But still, not a new problem

7:12 PM
But aren't the copycat sites doing so without permission, whereas now, SE is deliberately feeding our content to OpenAI?

@CPlus Yeah, but remember, they are also getting something out of it and I am still slightly hopeful that'll mean good stuff for the sites too, as well, the deal probably only lasts as long as the public sites keep providing new data?

But what kinds of good stuff are you hopeful for?

It's not ideal and maybe I'm just too worn down by all the dramas I've seen before but I don't really feel like this is as big as some people make it. I'd rather see my stuff on OpenAI with attribution than without. And I am 90 percent sure it can get its hands on it without this deal too, data dumps are a thing...
@CPlus Hopefully? Continued working on stuff like onboarding, getting quality new posts, work on better mod tools?
I'd say a few extra CMs as well but given how easily those are discarded again, I wouldn't wish that on anyone getting the job, so not those.

@Tinkeringbell I am... very interested in what the deal means by 'with attribution' because I have never seen ChatGPT give attribution before.

@CPlus So am I, and many others looking at the upvotes on that post, but it's one of the things that was promised

8:07 PM
@CPlus have you used copilot?
@CPlus the sentiment of not helping big corporations earn money doesn't really make sense to me. your content is CC-BY-SA 4.0. not sure what exactly that means for LLM training yet, but outside of the AI story, your content is licensed in a pretty open way for big corporations to use- or anyone- for that matter.

8:39 PM
@super-starball-ultra No I haven't.

@super-starball-ultra The thing is, it's made available for free to use for free..if they were passing it on for free without profiting themselves, no one would probably bat an eye except for the whole attribution thing.
It just starts to suck when you try to make the world a bit better, and some capitalism comes along and says "hey, nice job you're doing for free, imma make a millionaire out of this and it's not going to be you!"

9:19 PM
@Tinkeringbell We’d still complain about how climate- and nature hostile the transformation is.

9:31 PM
Okay, true.

1 hour later…
10:32 PM
@Tinkeringbell and I sympathize. but I'm saying it's not a new problem (maybe the scale is new). CC-BY-SA does not restrict what purpose the licensed content is used for.
when anyone licenses their content under CC-BY-SA, they should be mentally prepared for capitalism (or other things) to take advantage of it.
@CPlus it finds content to use from web searches and then links back to the resources it used. if you have a windows 11 machine, try it.

11:08 PM
@CPlus SE's always been a profit seeking corporation
The issue is generally for me is they've ignored working on public Q&A and giving it the resources it needs for other things - and suddenly public Q&A is the valuble thing
For me the 'trade' is them 'selling' my work in return for that money going into building and maintaining all of the network, including chat

@JourneymanGeek How naive of you. They are selling your work in return for that money going straight into their pockets. :)
@M.A.R. BBBBB
