2:00 AM
lmao

Is there some post on MSO about why SE looks teribad on mobile browsers now? I thought I remember seeing one

I'm pretty sure it's a penguin and a duck
@NickT yes and you can thank @rchern for that one, I think I recall Jeff asking her to take ownership :p

@NickT You mean the grayscale issue on ibads ?

2:01 AM
@NickT More importantly, there's a feature request to give you the option to change that:

Q: "View standard site" option for mobile devices?

Jon SkeetMany sites which have mobile versions (e.g. Amazon) allow you to force the site into "standard" mode - letting the user decide for themselves that they're happy to use more bandwidth, deal with any mobile browsing issues etc. Personally I'd rather see SO as it used to be when on my phone, but I ...

I think so, but it also applies to Android/Webkit as well

poll: how many processes do y'all have running? (like, task manager, not just apps in your tray...)

Q: New Stack Overflow Mobile Site?

Adam RackisA few days ago my iPhone started rendering Stack Overflow a bit differently, using duller colors, trimmed-down buttons, etc. (I am on StackOverflow.com - NOT the mobile site) Is this some sort of opimization they've put in to reduce bandwidth going to mobile devices, or is something else going ...

@RebeccaChernoff I show 114

Q: Don't use mobile theme on iPad

DiagoI love my iPad. I love it for the fact that I can visit a website and view it in it's 1024x768 glory in full color. I love seeing the Apple site look pretty and I love using my iPad to show off Stack Exchange to my friends and colleagues. Then the shock. I log in to check the sites and I get......

@RebeccaChernoff 145 (I have a lot of Chrome tabs open)

87
only 7 chrome tabs open, closed my browser a few mins ago

2:03 AM
I also don't know how many processes I'm spawning on the server right now from SSMS
> A photo of @feliciaday's hands caressing a Braille issue of Playboy. Don't ask.
the comments are awesome too
@RebeccaChernoff why?

Just doing a sanity check.

@RebeccaChernoff how many do you show?
if it's less than 180 I wouldn't worry too much
bored bored bored bored bored
comeon VS and SSMS, one of you please hurry up

Yeah, totally not over that haha

@RebeccaChernoff that's good then :d

Eh, I almost wish I did have too many. It'd be something to blame at least.

2:07 AM
oh, haha
so have you checked the fan inlets for clogging hair and such?
Do you have pets? I can't recall, but I think you have one or two pets

Can't totally get to the fan but from what I can see it looks fine.

What's the deal?
is clearly paying attention

@TimStone per usual? q:

@RebeccaChernoff Hey, you say that like I'm not normally glued to this chat :p

@TimStone her laptop is either overheating or warming up cans of Hormel, and either way, it's causing her to make this odd looking emoticon -> ): <- with her face IRL

2:10 AM
When you can hear the fan going from across the room, something's wrong. (;
Also, when you can feel the fan with your hands on the keyboard.

For some reason I think my boss' Lenovo had a similar issue.

oO ~ Rebecca do you have a Lenovo?
RebeccaChernoff clearly needs a one syllable nickname for shorter communication in the room, and Reb doesn't sound right ... :\
and rchern is two choppers

oh it's all in funners

2:16 AM
Also, I still don't know if you have a lenovo :p

oh, I do (;

Just not one that supports two external monitors simultaneously :P

So you may have a fubarred laptop ):
lol, true
call them and complain and demand a repair and an upgrade!
anybody care to guess what my coworker broke for me?

@TimStone nah, 2 displays is fine, just not 3 (;

@RebeccaChernoff Well, implicit "two external and the laptop itself" :p

2:19 AM
well, but 2 external is what I use every day (;

I'm still confused why you don't just use your desktop. ;)

@TimStone what a hideous suggestion!

@drachenstern My co-worker just broke my hg repository for me

I type from my desktop
@TimPost nice
I have a page that's returning el zero data
and I just realized why /facepalm
the things I do to myself
ok, so I get to do this one by hand ... oh the joys of verification

@TimStone Eh, work vs personal? This can go to Panera and Borders every once in a while, etc.

2:22 AM
Fair enough.

tim do I show as online or offline on skype?

If you just messaged me, I heard the noise :P

import antigravity does not work in python, but if you use python openssl, you can catch the gravitational exception to achieve a similar result.
I did not expect my first python project to be hacking at a web server :/

That was my first (and currently only) experience with Python too, heh, hacking into something that was broken.

I'm adding a ton of features to that
Added basic http auth, a handler for HEAD and POST, configuration file parser, fixed signal handlers on Linux, now supports adding a ca bundle in addition to the PEM cert
I can't believe it was so easy

2:28 AM
@Tim: Are you writing an HTTP server?

@GeorgeEdison re-writing one. It's based on simple http in python

I'm right in the middle of doing the same thing!

We're using it as a console for virtual machines so people don't have to run goofy unsigned java applets

(Only using Qt, not Python...)

Can Java applets running in your browser get at your system?

2:34 AM
Probably.
I remember one that used to be able to get track information from a CD after allowing it to run.

I am back.

ugh, milk chocolate is so awful

@mootinator wb. Have clean dishes now?
oh shit, I gotta get done, I have dogs to be walked

@drachenstern very clean.

@mootinator Yatta!

2:46 AM
@drachenstern And, that's why I don't have dogs. :)

@GeorgeMarian fair enough ;)

Some day, when I have a yard, that'll change.

@GeorgeMarian I tried that and started developing severe allergies :\

@drachenstern Ouch, that sucks.

@drachenstern I had the same reaction to a cat.

2:51 AM
Yeah, and she wants to get a cat >.<
that was an ironic choice of emoticon

heh

This person makes me so sad.

why?

9k reputation, 2 gold badges, 47 silver badges, 5 answers, and he still doesn't know how to ask a good question.

2:56 AM
wow just looked at the profile... 1300 questions? holy crap... I have 1.

Just goes to show that some people are beyond reach.

With that many questions and that many badges, it's almost as if someone is paying him to have StackOverflow write their company's applications.

Is it worth buying AppleCare on a MBP 17"?

@DanGrossman It does seem like that, doesn't it? Meh.

If you're gonna buy a nice computer, get a warranty, I say. If not from the manufacturer, then from SquareTrade.

3:04 AM
@DanGrossman Help Vampire! Alert!

SquareTrade: capitalizing on the low points in the bathtub curve of failures since 1999

configuring a MBP 17" for fun

i usually take my chances with hardware failure..

How do you configure a mac? I thought you could only buy what you're given?

3:05 AM
im not going to spend an extra 15% on a large purchase... i've got a replacement plan on my logitech g930 wireless headset though

A 3-year warranty with accidental damage (drop/spill/etc) coverage from SquareTrade on a $1500 computer is $200-300. I think it's worth it, considering you generally plan on keeping a computer that expensive for more than its 1 year warranty.
If it were a $600 laptop from your neighborhood big box store, then that's different.

We are talking about an Apple here, they'll have a new improved model after a year.
Lemmings-activate!

$3k - not too shabby... hrm... Ok...

@NickT remarkably I've seen that. :p

3:10 AM
Nippon has increasing Game Center presence.

And the nice thing about ST warranties is that you get repair within 5 days or a check for the replacement cost. No sending it in to the manufacturer that decides to keep it for 2 months then send it back still broken.

@Moshe does it? Nice

Yea. With Cole.Brand at the fore.

lol, woohooo

3:12 AM
I just started playing Fruit Ninja on my phone.

Lots of aisian usernames, interesting but not surprising.
Nippon: Game of The Year Edition

@DanGrossman and?

Translate it into japanese
@drachenstern It is also asian themed and enjoyable.

@Dan I don't know Japanese.

@DanGrossman ahhh
@Moshe then now is an excellent time to learn it :D

3:13 AM
@Moshe But... Nippon....!
wakarimasennnnnnnnnn

My friend knows it though.
Tell your friends and family. Swarm the forums with the news. Nippon is still free for just a few hours.
Yesterday was wildly successful. 130 downloads.
I wonder what today's numbers are.
I also wonder how to turn those downloads into cash.

sweet

You need to build some analytics in there so you aren't dependent on apple for numbers

you could charge for it #obv ;)

@Fosco I do. I need advertising.
So I made it free.

3:18 AM
I recommend TV ads!
That's how I heard about fruit ninja. A Windows Phone ad.

@Dan does that work with iOS apps?

You can advertise anything on TV

To get intoc one of those commercials, you need to be big. Catch twenty two.

> Create an affordable TV commercial and run it for as little as $20 per TV spot.

I wad asking about the analytics site @Dan

3:20 AM
Oh, yes, it does

I recommend submitting an area51 proposal, defining it, finding 200 people to commit, then using "How do I buy Nippon" in the banner ad for your beta site on the SE network.

@moot even with the voting ring, there aren't enough people who would join.

@Moshe Advertise your area51 proposal on TV!

@Moshe Step 0: Bigger voting ring

Haha.

3:22 AM
@DanGrossman that didn't work for smugmug either ;)

Which is a shame...

I know
I'm still committed to ti

status-bydesign

speaking of commitments, I should go do some more codegolfing

I was a goof and committed to fitness and skeptics and have no idea how I'm going to make ten posts on either of them.

3:25 AM
@TimStone go ahead and have a TW, I got my 50+

Although I thought of a question I could ask on both earlier... Bwahahaaha.

random Stack Overflow Internet Services (SOIS) is going public! As our show of thanks to you providing all the great content for Stack Overflow, we're allowing you the one time opportunity to convert your reputation points into actual company stock. This is a one-way transaction and any poi...

If only...

@drachenstern I started new games with everyone and then realized I shouldn't be playing games. Whoops. :P

@TimStone lol

@Dan I will look into that. As a rule, I don't use third party libraries unless they are simple to use and Xcode doesn't detect memory leaks. I need to check this one.
And I suspect google tv users to have androids. Not my market...
Id better spend on Facebook ads or iAd.

3:30 AM
Google AdWords for TV has nothing to do with Google TV
it's a way to buy ads on television. like the kind everyone gets on their TV
you can buy a spot on CNN at 10PM in your city
tune to CNN and watch your ad

Where are google adwords tv ads shown?

on TV

Really? Oh. Tickers. I see.

Tickers?

Sweet!
News tickers. On the bottom of the screen, no?
Where else are they shown?

3:32 AM
No
TV
nothing on the screen but your ad

Er, how is text an interesting ad?

you are buying a commercial
it's not text

For tv.
Who makes the commercial ?

you do

Link again please?

Thanks.

I nearly forgot to post this...

mootinatorLaunch a Q&A site for Quora. I did, in fact, have April 1 in mind when I proposed it.

Wow. @Dan. That is incredible. I can bid for a tv spot.
Nippon. Game if the Year Edition

Google is everywhere.

@Moshe Nah, Google has algorithms to detect that stuff.

3:40 AM
Except newspapers. They used to be, but they gave up on that dying platform.

I can air for a few hundred bucks.

In your ad you used the language "game of the year". Google was unable to verify this claim.

And radio. There was a Google Radio Ads, but they bailed on that too.

Interestingly, Apple's advertising guidelines don't mention tv ads. They discuss usage of iOS devices in print an web.
/me is so confused and excited.

/me wants donuts

3:44 AM
/me would ship @Dan donuts if he had means to. Nippon!
Nippon!

:lol:
I would buy your app if I had means to, as well. I want to play it.

@Dan I appreciate that.
Allow me to clarify - are you self employed? You mention your w3 analytics often.
Is that your business?

Yes I am
I live off those sites of mine

Do your clients use iOS?

I'm sure some number of 'em have an iPhone, I don't have any mobile apps

3:48 AM
@Moshe he's not going to pander your app to his professional clients if that's what you have in ind.

Wait. Perhaps we can work something out.
No, but I can make an iPhone reader for his analytics which can contain iAds.
And then I make money off those ads.

ehwut?
So you want him to give you any profits for an app that access his core business?
I see where you benefit. Where does he?

@drachenstern he has analytics sites, correct?

From selling the app?
I figure you have to distribute the app for you to get the iAds profits

No. I get a cut and he gets a mobile app.
Everyone gains.

3:51 AM
I've finally closed my dev environment, let me go walk the dogs and I'll come back to this

I can't get over the $99/year for iOS developer program.

Yea i upload it from my iOS dev account.

I can't get over the needing an Apple computer part :/

@DanGrossman Fortunately my wife took care of that.

@moot why? They handle credit cards and hosting.
@Dan why should apple invest in making an sdk for windows?

3:52 AM
@Moshe Don't you need it to start though?

@Moshe So that the other billion computer owners can make apps for Apple to make money from

It's all good once I actually have an app for them to market.

I'm tired of defending apple. Complain all you want. They aren't going to change even if you are right.

I don't mind the fee, but buying a whole computer is too expensive for me

@Moshe It only bothers me because those tactics shouldn't, in theory, work.

3:55 AM
@Dan fair enough. Consider this though. Each dev pays a hundred bucks. Then apple only makes money once the developers do. It's a pittance unless the app takes off.

$100 per person is plenty to cover the cost of developing an Xcode for Windows or something

or the 30% from each in-app sale

They make either the Money that the developers couldn't push over a minimum payout threshold, or the thirty percent. Which is often less than several hundred dollars.
Or they can force you to buy a Mac. Which is more profitable?

Neither, because I don't develop for iOS?

Most iOS apps I've followed haven't made the developers any money. This is why I'm skeptical about the $99.
Sure there are success stories..

3:57 AM
So they can make two hundred a dev or eight hundred a dev. And they filter put the non serious devs. Which increases the likelyhood of successful apps.
As apple, I want to be selling macs to serious devs than hopinga bunch of loony devs dabble a success story together.

Does the $99 also pay the paralegals that scrutinize every submission to the appstore in attempt to reject it?

Eh, it works for now, and when it stops working for them (because iOS' relative market share keeps dropping) they'll pull out the Windows version then

They may.

I should really make android apps
i'm just so lazy :)

Android is the only SDK I haven't touched yet.
Even though writing for Blackberry and Windows Phone 7 is more useless than giving apple money.

4:00 AM
@NickT yes. It's not paralegals. It's software that scans for a lot of stuff. Private apis. Child unfriendly. Etc. Then humans test. At hat point it's not paralegals anymore.
How is winphone7?
And what did you think of iOS SDK?

Better than earlier versions... :?
@Moshe I've really only just 'touched' them, not used them enough to know how much each annoys me.

Ok. Time to finish folding laundry and off to sleep. Let's see if I can stay out of the tavern and get to sleep.
Night folks.
Heh. Night.

Night

Switching to and from C/PHP 3 - 5 times an hour is really starting to suck.

@TimPost Stop doing it!

4:04 AM
It's like being overjoyed that you won the lottery at your favorite uncle's funeral
Not saying which one PHP is , though :)

I miss C.

Dan, I wish I could .. I have a PHP driven API that talks to a bunch of C helpers

php not so much.

I think PHP is sentient, judging by its attitude.

Embedded jQuery would have been fun.

4:07 AM
Server-side jQuery is fun :)
npm install jquery
So many things I should be working on. I need to write another node.js server, I have a half-finished Twilio app that integrates phone and web, a half-finished event analytics platform, a website change monitoring service (HTML diffs) that's 99% working I need to tidy up...
Instead of working on any of it, I'll probably buy donuts and watch Colbert Report.

Mmm TV.

$this->sucks("Something very bad happened");

Excellent function name.
I never liked die "something bad", too macabre.

4:48 AM
Kevin are you playing linkedin?

I am...
To what end, I'm not sure.

hahah
I think you have more LIReps than I do

I looked up a new hire earlier today, to confirm a suspicion.
That we did, in fact, get an employee from the same small firm 3/4 of the way across the country we lost one to a few years ago.

Trading punches eh? Heheh

LinkedIn fail

4:54 AM
@drachenstern I hate those.
Not that hating those stopped me from using mint.com

I should probably update my linkedin at some point
not right now tho
