Q: In XP, how do I rename a directory of files using a regex or similar to remove part of a filename and add a prefix?

drachensternI have a list of files generated from SSMS in XP like this: dbo.mysproc1.StoredProcedure.sql dbo.mysproc2.StoredProcedure.sql dbo.mySproc3.StoredProcedure.sql ... you get the drift I want to rename them to: proc.dbo.mysproc1.sql proc.dbo.mysproc2.sql proc.dbo.mySproc3.sql ... you get the drif...

I've gotten good at using Excel for renaming a bunch of files that have no real pattern
I'd probably use it there if it's one-off :P

what in vba?
I would like to see a batch process so I could stick it in the repo and use it later as I got a stick in my craw, but obviously not necessary. For that matter I could stub up a C# project and run it through on the debugger
I mean, those obvious solutions don't escape me, but I want to do it from the shell

@drachenstern I didn't read your "consensus from chat.SE and chat.MSO", but it seems off-topic to me too. That's not programming at all

9:17 PM
yarr, but I asked on both sites where to post it, so I'm all grrrrrr

I must admit that how you've phrased the question would lend it more to SU that SO.

can you move it? I don't mind it getting moved. If you can, would you?

It's got two votes to migrate to SU. Only three more regular votes or one moderator. You could vote yourself - you've got over 3K rep.

so when I vote what do I vote? I don't remember seeing migrate on my list of options ...

In it's current form is is better suited to SU.
Click the "off topic" option. You're then presented with a second dialog which gives you the option of voting for simply "off topic" or to migrate.

9:21 PM
oooooh
thanks

No problem. Now even if the two remaining votes are cast for some other option it will get migrated to SU. Unless a mod votes differently in which case their choice rules.

Interesting
what if I accept the answer before those two?

I think it becomes unaccepted after migration, but I don't remember

oh that'll suck, cos that was what I needed. And now that I know what I need to know the answer becomes obvious and how to search for it at that

You can always reaccept it on SU...

9:32 PM
of course that
just wasted effort etc
:p
now I'm all twiddly thumbs waiting on it to get migrated :p
@TimStone come migrate this sucker :p

Just sat down at my desk, what's up?

vote to move to SU

Hey everyone, have a really weird issue

@drachenstern Done

@TheUnhandledException knock it to us

9:35 PM
Client emails a PDF via our server, using Outlook, and it arrives at the destination corrupt. But when he emails the same PDF using Gmail it's OK

@drachenstern Added a PS method for kicks :P

@NickT saw that, much obliged

Batch is probably more convenient though

for this it is

gci = get-childitem = dir

9:36 PM
I saw that ;)

= ls

as well the gci-recurse

@TheUnhandledException You're confused that Outlook sucks? ;)

LOL. Maybe it is just an outlook issue

Did you look at the raw emails and compare?

9:39 PM
Oblig: does it happen on any other machine?

@TimStone I am about to view source
File is shorter when emailed via outlook and the hexdump shows it is also different

seriously?
ffs

@drachenstern Not sure, but when another person sends the file via his machine, it works

Oh Outlook..

@TheUnhandledException so basic-test indicates no.

9:43 PM
Yes
Maybe a virus on the client's system?

@drachenstern wut

My poor eyes ;_;

oh, outlook is sending it using quoted-printable, wtf?

9:44 PM
@NickT was looking for a better image, decided that one wasn't good enough

"nukeitfromorbit.com/stop_stealing_my_bandwidth/Fairy_Hannah.jpg"

did it? for me it linked the right one ... now I gotta refresh the room
brb
lol, no, I see the right one ...
oh, now it came up ...
ffs

har har
HTTP referrer + caching 1, @drachenstern 0?

@NickT I believe so sir.
but referrer shouldn't have mattered, it was a paste ...

I like how on SU you can get 3x ads for SF, 2 banners and the sidebox

9:49 PM
but for reference for everyone: nukeitfromorbit.com
http://nukeitfromorbit.com/nuke.jpg

I've seen entirely too much of Miley Cyrus in the last five minutes. Thanks chat.MSO

@MichaelMrozek lol, you're entirely welcome :p
@RebeccaChernoff might be glad I fairied things up a bit tho :p

When you need things fairied up, call @drachenstern?

@ChrisF to be sure, it was something about "nuke the site from orbit. it's the only way"
@MichaelMrozek let's just make it when you need things f*ed up, call @drachenstern and that should cover all bases ...
at least I can laugh at myself eh?

@drachenstern - I checked en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Aliens and I'd conflated a couple of lines together.

9:53 PM
Ripley: I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
@ChrisF yeah I just had IMDB open

Hicks: Prep for dust-off. We're going to need immediate evac.

Ferro: Roger. We're on our way.
Hicks: All right. We take off. Nuke the site from orbit. (Glances at Ripley in agreement) It's the only way to be sure.

can we OB wikiquote entries?

I love that movie
@drachenstern I don't believe so. Ask @balpha for support
Ask for Last.fm oneboxing while you're at it ;-)
(for Tunes)

9:59 PM
we can not, so I'm adding it, I'll link here when I do so you guys can upvote my proposal :p

be sure to include FHC

oh hell man I was just gonna put the actual code part they needed. I wasn't gonna make 'em work for it. I would like to actually see this one happen.

heelooo

A: What sites should have hyperlinking (onebox) support in chat?

drachensternIMDB quotes: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090605/quotes?qt0424740 <div id="qt0424740" class="soda-callout-box quote-callout-box"> <div class="sodatext"> <b><a href="/name/nm0000200/">Hudson</a></b>: Let's just bug out and call it even, OK? What are we ...

:whines: My Tonido plug is scheduled for delivery next week. Why so long :(
:whines: There was also no free Chrome notebook on my doorstep today.
:whines: Olark web chat has built-in limits they don't tell you about.

:whines: Dan Grossman is being annoying..

:whines: it's fun to whine

@TylerChacha Do you ever say anything other than hello?

@DanGrossman he surely does, he talks about triton donchaknow

10:19 PM
@DanGrossman I think only 10% of my messages are "Hello"

40% to moderation tools
one month to go :/

congrats sir
I'm like 31% :D

I'm already there!

want to donate some reputation to us?

you know you want to use some bounties :p

10:24 PM
I use them on contests..

@drachenstern hmm?

@RebeccaChernoff yeah don't ask ... :p
@RebeccaChernoff maybe scroll up but that's about it

CEO told me the meeting with the new big lead went very well

/afk

10:28 PM
I was reading down and still confused (;

@Rebecca sorry, I have reinstalled my laptop OS, where can I get your Chrome chat and question userscripts?
@drachenstern my "about me" status never caught on :-(

You can make any statement feel like it was important simply by putting your fist in the air as you say it...

@TylerChacha Don't ask me how, but somehow I read that as "You can make any statement feel like it was important simply by putting your fist in one's eye as you say it..."
I'm really not a violent person!

@TheUnhandledException That works too...

:|
RT @vwduder: vmail is pretty fun: http://danielchoi.com/software/vmail.html

10:33 PM
wait, is that mail in vim?
that's awesome

Clearly misdelivered email, should of been to me

@NickT -1, "should of"

10:46 PM
@radp Flagged to be moved to English.SE

@DanGrossman AWESOME!
Congrats

@TheUnhandledException, pull teh raws from the Github repo

Hm, looks like one of my company's competitors has released a new version of their software...

10:52 PM
Quick! Copy all the features!
Deadline: Tomorrow morning

They do have more features now
More than we do. Not ones I didn't think we should add, but they have them built already

That or put out a 37Signals-esque press release on "less is more, our software is better because we DON'T do those things"

Their product still has a bad UI and still works intermittently, so that's good I suppose
@DanGrossman LOL

Are there moderators for a site in private beta?

@NickT, the team.

10:55 PM
What team

@TheUnhandledException Well, the relatively small part of them that do have accounts.

@radp funny I was just going to mention how many of those people I haven't seen in chat ;-)

Heh, so mod-only stuff like CW is a pain to have happen on them?

@radp, well the devs/server guys do. sales team don't. On SO though, hrmph.

11:00 PM
Nite

Olark is fun. I can see someone trying to scam me on an ecommerce site and yell at them in realtime, before they even place the order.

11:33 PM
I keep killing my own reputation by downvoting bad advice.

11:46 PM
So I get through helping a coworker figure out a debug issue, only to find out we're the only two in the office. I really gotta get outta here :p
> Attn Team: If you keep deploying two month old software to client sites I shall have to stab you in the eyeball. Thanks, C

Hahah :P

Well it's bad when you goto pull up a pre-deploy we're-in-final-test version of the site and see the old logo ...

Yeah..

That person should be fired. Then rehired at a lower wage. Then given an end of year raise back to his old wage.

lmao, I think it was my boss that deployed it :p

11:57 PM
oops (;

yeah, so lucky me I get to fix it :S
