in fact I am still behind. I think part of it comes from the fact that we're not getting material needed from our clients, either, so...

When is your birthday?

Friday
Meta's going to give me a gold badge a few days later XD

Also, the boys in blue makes me giggle. Are they a team of superheroes?

@TheUnhandledException woo!

@RebeccaChernoff Heheh, I was playing NFS at the time ;)

5:02 PM
@RebeccaChernoff haha, yeah, and why blue?
@RebeccaChernoff Wait, yes, they are...

@TheUnhandledException Their names appear in blue? :P

Oh, replacement is starting the 27th. I think I'll give a whew to that one.

searches for the meta post

Heheh

where is it? I know I've seen the team portreyed as superheros

5:04 PM
Oh, the movie poster one.

There's a previous thread too I think?

shrugs Wouldn't surprise me :P

A: How to detect if ASP.NET is enabled in IIS 7

drachensternSo do you want the easy way? Make a nice pretty .aspx page that displays as HTML with an error block in a div in a placeholder saying "You need to install ASP.NET" and have it change on ASP.NET being installed to instead say "ASP.NET is installed" and then just have the tool launch this webpage i...

5:06 PM
@RebeccaChernoff yeah, the previous thread
@Fosco Huh. How much we want to bet he runs? :-p

@TheUnhandledException nah, I don't think he'll run. He'll probably take a boat ;)

@Fosco A couple hours old doesn't count as breaking. q:

I was offline for like 3 hours....

I rarely get notifications, clearly I'm not popular enough :P

@RebeccaChernoff )= well it was breaking news to me...

5:08 PM
@TimStone you have to leave to get notifications

@TheUnhandledException He's not going to run.

@drachenstern Hahahah, yeah, yeah. :P

@drachenstern Oh, not true at all, to my great annoyance :)

@drachenstern LOL

@TimStone clearly you're not offline enough ;-)

5:10 PM
Oooo no!

@Fosco OK. I'll buy you a beer if he doesn't ;-)

Josh has joined us PERMANENTELY!!!!
oy...

@TylerChacha Actually I was just about to go get lunch :-)

Ok, where do I go to flag @Zypher most easily?
chat.SE?

I think you just did. Hehe.

5:11 PM
@TheUnhandledException You can buy one for me too.

@drachenstern ServerFault chat
@TimStone It's on then!

@RebeccaChernoff hehe

Hi again!

@TheUnhandledException yarr, there now

Hoorah! ;)

5:11 PM
and he's not? SLACKER!

@TheUnhandledException He turned himself in, remember? He could've went into hiding.

@Fosco You have a great point there

@MichaelMrozek I'm picturing an epic battle between the staff members to determine who got to model the couch.

Argh, zoning out on teleconference..whoops.

@TimStone "Tim! Tim?? Why are you not respondingl!?! TIM! COME BACK TO US!!!!"

5:18 PM
@RebeccaChernoff I was mostly amused by "New Star Wars-esque couch ... Beam me up, Scotty!"

@MichaelMrozek Yes, that's full of geek-fail :(
@TheUnhandledException Hahah, luckily no one was talking directly to me...I think..

LOL
OK. Lunchtime. Later everyone

Enjoy :P

unlike some slackers (@Fosco!!!!) I don't eat before noon ;-)
ducks out before he can notice

@MichaelMrozek Hehe, yes. But picturing an epic battle makes it even more fun. q:

5:24 PM
hehe..

codinghorror.com/blog/2010/12/… ~ Does using IWA/NTLM on IIS count as a DDL (domain drivers license)? Should we add an entry to the disambiguation list on WP for both IDL and DDL? :p (first question serious, second question joke)

My eyes have glazed over with all of those acronyms. :P

@RebeccaChernoff How dare you

@MichaelMrozek That made me laugh a little when I saw it earlier.

Heh.
Do you disagree with my edit? (;

5:31 PM
No, but I might roll it back anyway

hahahahah
I'm slightly disappointed @JeffAtwood hasn't weighed in on this :p

Q: Should "virus source" questions be deleted outright?

drachensternIn regards to this post: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4174865 What, if anything, should be done with questions which post source-code that are really virii? Should the user account be deleted as well? I'm all for studying virii, but there's a bit of active discussion when one is studying ...

Those damn Visual Basic viruses..

I thought that was a bit silly; if you're taking giant blocks of code you find on SO and executing them without reading them, you're doing something very wrong and probably won't survive very long on the Internet

@MichaelMrozek I'm thinking of the googlers

5:35 PM
It's not even particularly obfuscated; there was a similar PHP question in July where the code was encrypted, and it got 44 upvotes

won't someone please think of the googlers?

@drachenstern As I said, if you take random blocks of code you find on the Internet and execute them on your machine without knowing what they do, you're not going to last very long

@MichaelMrozek lol, ok true

Q: Site compromised .htaccess files everywhere...

Steven KimpeSome of the sites we're hosting are compromised by... I don't know what. Every directory on the webserver contains a .htaccess file which redirects a user coming from a search engine to a page which doesn't even exist - see the .htaccess file below. The problem first appeared on 10 december 2010...

....Go figure, heh.

LINQ makes me hate ORMs less.

5:42 PM
@MichaelMrozek If you want to roll back an edit, roll this one back, heh. meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/72258/…

@RebeccaChernoff Don't make me get out the faux Venn diagram!

I tried to block that post out

Hello

hovers finger over the rollback button, hrmmm

5:46 PM
@RebeccaChernoff What's wrong with that edit?

It feels a bit rude to me? If anything truly delete the text instead of striking it out?

@RebeccaChernoff Oh! Yes, that part is silly; I thought the strikethrough was from the diff view

oh my god its only one o'clock.
I hope Rahm loses this hearing about running for mayor of Chicago.

Heh, that totally messed up the revisions page.

Hahah, nice.

6:03 PM
Just discovered an Easter Egg on all sites. Type "http://sitename/captcha" (you're all going to tell me you already knew aren't you?)

Jin
@ChrisF now make some suggestions for Programmers.se!

@Jin I'm thinking - that's why I double checked some of the other sites!

@ChrisF Isn't that the normal human verification page you get redirected to?

Jin
@ChrisF btw thanks for linking the design post from the parent site message.

@TimStone - yes, but I wanted to trigger it so I could check what the image was.
@Jin That's what I'm here for ;)

6:06 PM
@Jin nice site design for P.SE btw ;)

Jin
@drachenstern thanks. I'm glad the new design got many positive feedback. otherwise i honestly wouldn't know what to do next...

@Jin you're welcome and you're quite talented. I'm still torn tho on the } Programmers { vs /* Programmers */

Jin
i think i'll go with /* */
it's more appropriate for the site IMO

possibly

I prefer the "} Programmers {" myself. The other is too C/C++ orientated

6:11 PM
did you see the comment about the badge colors == magnets?
> Re: badges, how about keeping them as pieces of paper, but turning the colored dots into magnets that attach them to the whiteboard? @Jin. – RegDwight

Should be "$.Programmers()" ----- (:
2

Jin
yes. i'll try to implement that idea
i also will use heavy css3 for this design too

@drachenstern like fridge magnets?

@Fosco Seconded :P

I was thinking that it shouldn't actually be any specific language but could be.

6:13 PM
@drachenstern The first one, but only if @RebeccaChernoff is made mod.

@Fosco YES
@TimStone lmao

@Jin did you get permission for the font? I've just noticed that it says "Free for personal use" on the deviantart page.

@Fosco needs moar jQuery

hehe

@ChrisF oh dear... that could be a stickler.
@NickT you here and I'm not seeing you?

Jin
6:15 PM
@ChrisF since the design isn't original i think it's OK.

What

can 10k mods see deleted SO questions or only diamonds?
@NickT that wasn't really the behavior I expected, you?

Jin
there are a lot of fonts out there where the design came from somewhere else.

@Jin OK
@drachenstern 10K's can see deleted questions if they have the link. Mods can see the links on users profile pages.

6:16 PM
I'm curious who deleted that and the reasoning

I'd guess in that case it was just extremely egregious as you pointed out

Jin
sometimes it amazes me how Atwood finds design related stuff faster than I do. he lives the interweb

@NickT perhaps so ...

Still doing it without a word is somewhat odd, it should be explained

yeppers, hopefully something will surface sometime

6:18 PM
@NickT Eh, that happens all the time around here. :P

@TimStone People and questions disappearing? :P

It actually doesn't say who deleted it for some reason...

@Jin 2nd go at PSE theme up?

@MichaelMrozek Now we have a mystery..

@MichaelMrozek Plus the answers aren't deleted

6:19 PM

@NickT Yes:

Q: Site Design, round 2

JinFirst, I want to thank you for your valuable feedback for the first design concept. Programmers.SE is a site about people and conceptual design more than coding. The old design simply did not reflect that; so it failed. I talked to Jeff about this, and he agrees that Programmers.se is much diffe...

Ooo. Nice

Jeez, people just didn't get }{ at all

It doesn't bother me, but I didn't get it either. Why }{ over {} ? I like all the options, though.

It's a pun on scope

6:26 PM
Wot he said

Ohhh. Clever ;) if a bit too subtle

But apparently site titles must compile
"stackoverflow" doesn't compile either. oh no.

I think using /* */ makes it too specific to one set of languages

So I'm at work and I've just flashed the radio, kernel, and ROM on my Samsung Fascinate.. man I love slacking off.

@MichaelMrozek now I'm really curious

6:30 PM
@TimStone Should I buy it?

I dunno, I just got it a few minutes ago, heheh. I bought it because it was half off the other day.

@TimStone well tell us, we needs to knows

It was actually half off yesterday too, but I forgot to mention it..

@ChrisF How would someone tangentially interested in coding not know what a /* means though? In any case, it's still just a logo.

@NickT - I suppose so.

6:32 PM
@ChrisF As a Python fan, I resent the claim that {} universally represents scope either...
just sayin'

@balpha Well they don't represent scope in VB.NET or FORTRAN either...

@balpha What drives your Python? :P
2
As an occasional assembly programmer, I resent the fact that there is scope at all!

@ChrisF and what about the language that shall not be named -- surely we don't want to block those developers out!

I surrender ;) /* */ it is.

We don't?

6:36 PM
@TimStone Most of todays programs run on Brainfuck, one way or the other...

@balpha What lang is that? I'm out of the loop

@balpha Heheh :D

@NickT Starts with "Brain" and ends in something else

ok fine I'll do it :p
The brainfuck programming language is an esoteric programming language noted for its extreme minimalism. It is a Turing tarpit, designed to challenge and amuse programmers, and is not suitable for practical use. Its name has been variously bowdlerized, sometimes appearing as brainf***, brainf*ck, brainfsck, b****fuck or BF. The name of the language is generally not capitalized except at the start of a sentence, although it is a proper noun. Language design Urban Müller created brainfuck in 1993 with the intention of designing a language which could be implemented with the smallest pos...
Notice I let wikipedia do the cursing tho :P

Yeah, I saw balpha post it just before I hit enter :P

6:39 PM
I successfully wrote a program in Whitespace, on a dare. It was awesome.
Whitespace is an esoteric programming language developed by Edwin Brady and Chris Morris at the University of Durham (also developers of the Kaya programming language). It was released on 1 April 2003 (April Fool's Day). Its name is a reference to whitespace characters. Unlike most programming languages, which ignore or assign little meaning to most whitespace characters, the Whitespace interpreter ignores any non-whitespace characters. Only spaces, tabs and linefeeds have meaning. An interesting consequence of this property is that a Whitespace program can easily be contained within the ...

A: Implementing Control Structures in Brainf**k

Tim StoneI didn't take a look at the link yet, but I imagine that AShelly's answer is probably more universally useful...however, having not dared to let my fingers type out some Brainfuck before, I decided that now was as good of a time as any and was able to get the following, which I think works. The ...

Hoorah!

jQuery UI is annoying..

I think we're going about it all wrong, it should just be written in 1337-hax0rs, like Google, instead of a language, because all programming languages are biased.

it seems like it should be extremely easily to reorder things in a list..
but it just isn't working out that way..

Indeed it is on StackAuth :)

6:55 PM

@radp okay, it's not in chat's cache of stackauth yet :)

@balpha Yeah, and so do all the SO Api sites that wish to enumerate SE sites.
@balpha Fair enough :)

woohoo organically 17 points away from the next rep-threshold on meta ... I'm so proud of me :D

@RebeccaChernoff Backward braces and such...sorry. :p

@drachenstern you rang?

@TimStone Oh. Heh.
Hmm. Looking at the star list I see someone isn't obeying Jeff. (;

@Zypher ages ago mate :p I think someone took care of it, I also crossposted to the comms room
@RebeccaChernoff It would appear to be three someones
@TimStone and yer point? Still nobody has said when that graphic gets updated. I would think spawning a new job on badge recalcs would be sufficient.

@drachenstern ah cool, machine was off most of the morning, new furnature was gettign installed, the stuff i had my machine one was getting thrown out ...

@Zypher has Korneel ever gotten up from that couch?
2

so that was the reference post @Zypher so you don't have to dig for it, figured you could say if it was migration worthy since I know you visit here and not sure who else on SF does.

ahh @drachenstern yes, that is most def a server config issue migrate that sucker
@balpha ... not sure i'm hidden away in the office Joel used to sit in now
my guess ... no

7:35 PM
@balpha the more important question I feel is whether there was an epic battle for who got to model the couch. I'm picturing swords or light sabers.

@Zypher just make sure to leave him some milk and cookies before leaving

korneel had the matching shirt

@Zypher well he's trying to incorporate it into a exe for distribution purposes a), and b) I don't have migrate privs :p

haha, of course i'll leave the care basket we got from somewhere for him

@RebeccaChernoff clearly you don't know programmers! It was paper tubes!

7:36 PM
@Zypher ...that's it? what a letdown. ):
@drachenstern same difference.

@RebeccaChernoff :p

@balpha you driving ?

yeah

@RebeccaChernoff yep, or the fact that he was there when Emily took the picture :)

7:40 PM
excellent

looks like Korneel did get up

@Zypher You're enjoying ripping my fun image to shreds, aren't you? |:
Rovio!

@RebeccaChernoff haha just possibly

lol :-D

7:43 PM
I think it would freak me out if I was chilling out on a couch and Rovio came around the corner and stared at me.

audio only works in IE, and I use Firefox. so I couldn't say hi :)

and that would freak me out even more (;

8:29 PM
I can't believe they deleted this bug:

What was the status?

status-bydesign

if nothing else, 2,516/1,200,000 isn't that high.
The total of that chart is 13,411 accounts, aka 1%

It's not one I especially cared about, but they shouldn't have just deleted it.

@LanceRoberts The way I read it the OP had misunderstood the difference between proposed and actual synonyms so it wasn't actually a bug. But I could be wrong.
Having the question marked as [status-bydesign] might have helped others not make the same mistake, but there was quite a bit of flame bait going on in the comments.

8:36 PM
If anyone is interested, there seems to be a tiny bug with the titles of the new vote counts on the profile pages
> Asked 4 non-wiki questions with a total score of 8. Answered 7 non-wiki questions with a total score of 106.
Guess only one of those should read non-wiki

No both should be non-wiki as it's only non wiki answers that could towards the tag badges.
Note the first line is talking about questions. The second about answers

Ah, yea, now I see it

can I "recommend" to a user at a client-site to install Chrome instead of IE8 because it makes my app work better?

A bit low on readability, would be better to make the second one something like "Provided 7 non-wiki answers..." imo

@drachenstern I don't see why not - as long as you support IE8 of course

8:40 PM
@ChrisF "it works on my machine" in IE8

It should be just like saying you need a certain resolution screen/colour depth. However - the customer is always right and if they want to use IE8 you should make sure it works.

Eh, if it's a single user, tell them what to do, if the "user" is the company, then they tell you.

It does work, but good lord is IE8 slow... and they all want fancy clientside (ok, well to make it spec fancy it should be clientside, no?) behaviors, so IE8 is so slow.
I've purposely not updated to IE9 on my dev box on account of most of my customers are XP/IE8

but I hate making them move questions when I could probably get better answers from the "preview other answers" to begin with
@ChrisF no problems on my end mate
