Why do particles disperse in solution? It's intuitive that in a universe with nonzero energy, particles will scatter in unpredictable ways and not stay together. But is there a way to prove it? It also kinda makes sense that entropy will increase, and they say entropy is always increasing in the universe. Why?

user259867
Let's take 3 particles in a 1-dimensional world, like the interval [0,1]. Their positions, x,y,z, can be encoded by a single point (x,y,z) in the 3-dimensional cube [0,1]^3. (Key word: configuration space). This point will be moving in a cube bouncing off the walls when the particles hit 0 or 1. It has no preference for any particular location in the cube.

user259867
The part of the cube where the three particles are within, say, 0.1 distance of each other is roughly a cylinder of radius 0.1 around the spatial (long) diagonal of the cube, connecting (0,0,0) to (1,1,1). Key point: volume-wise, this is a small part of the cube.

user259867
Therefore, the particles will spend little time close to each other, proportional to the time we spend observing them.

user259867
Now this was a rather small model. Take 10^20 or so particles in a 3-dimensional box. The configuration space will now be have 3*10^20 dimensions. But the same ideas hold: the part of configuration space that corresponds to the particles being close together has small volume.

user259867
By which I mean, extremely small volume (such disproportions get exaggerated in very high dimensions). So within our lifetime, we are never going to observe the particles reaching such a state, even though they in principle could. Of course we can make them begin in such a state, by dropping a concentrated bit of matter somewhere. But moving randomly on their own, they will leave that tiny region of the configuration space, unlikely to return.

12:14 AM
Oh, kewl, so if the particles' positions are independent, being together is just statistically unlikely which is easy to see because they could equally be anywhere. If they push eachother away repel (like ions with electromagnetism force or whatever), then theyre pushed apart with nothing to counteract it.
Yay, I'll now eat pizza.

@Fundamental That was the problem. Thanks!

I didn't realize that, no....that was something I tried to fix the problem of the sub-list (though it didn't work)
Thanks!

I thought that those empty lines would result in separate <ul><li>text</li></ul>. But this is not what's happening; instead, the bullets separated by empty lines become <ul><li><p>text</p></li></ul>

3:07 AM
@Fundamental A little. The only think I'm worried about is not having enough time to do the job right.

a heady vintage indeed, though age was not kind to it

@Shog9 The humor is caused by the contradiction from Shokhet obviously seeing the HTML Fundamental posted before saying he hadn't seen HTML for a while significantly longer than the time between his message and Fundamental's.

user259867
LH should have 4-5 mods instead of 3, to handle all the deletions.

user259867
On the starboard, it's the star that's impressed.

@Shog9 I certainly don't for questions before VLQ'ing and ranting to all the highreps in the comments.

Impressment, colloquially, "the press" or the "press gang", refers to the act of taking men into a navy by force and with or without notice. Navies of several nations used forced recruitment by various means. The large size of the British Royal Navy in the Age of Sail meant impressment was most commonly associated with Britain. It was used by the Royal Navy in wartime, beginning in 1664 and during the 18th and early 19th centuries as a means of crewing warships, although legal sanction for the practice goes back to the time of Edward I of England. The Royal Navy impressed many merchant sailors...
