2:02 PM

@AidenBell Pretty much it, yeah

it's okay, because I'm home!

how much activity is the SO Tavern getting?

Dunno. I poke my nose in for flags and that it lol
Actually, quite consistently moderate

2:05 PM
I think I've made it too easy now for Jeff to find my posts. I should change my Meta name again.

maybe dapb

padb?

doesn't mean anything. im tired leaves

or Forward Smiler

or Hack-o-Lantern

2:06 PM
@radp Nah, too generic
Everybody here is a forward smiler, except for someone (cough cough)

Can you have unicode names?

@AidenBell Partially, not all codepoints are okay.

@AidenBell Yes we can
I've seen some Chinese, Japanese, Hebrew names floating around, as well as some symbols

I could use Hebrew codepoints to make it annoying for people to select my name.

∈∌

2:08 PM
@AidenBell Yeah, those can't be used I'm afraid :(

⋠⋯
@radp - shame. Unicode names would be fun

⋯_⋯

@radp Where is your emergency?

adds as feature request for own work ... unicode everywhere

@PopularDemand just one dash.

2:10 PM
@radp Oh, so it is. I didn't bother selecting it.

@radp If you want to I can give you a Chinese name

Six-eyes, six-eyes!

@YiJiang Chinese isn't RTL.

where's bold gone?

:273851 <b> z in their eyes...

2:10 PM
:273851 Balderdash.

well, mine was font-weight-normal-dash

@badp how about U+200 U+200 U+200 U+200?

@radp Why would you want RTL? You'll have to use arabic for that

@YiJiang or Hebrew.

Also, I don't think the @-mention system works backwards

2:11 PM
@PopularDemand reminds me of that lame, generic boring band ... U2

RTL/LTR mixtures are annoying to select and edit.

@radp But the system won't actually recognize it as RTL

@AidenBell Is that a Venn Diagram?

@YiJiang - No that's the mathematical standard symbol for "Hot-damn!"
It's like therefore

2:13 PM
@AidenBell Right..... ..... ..... ....

so has the yawn-nouncement from Apple come out yet?
no, less than an hour to go yet.
before the world know about the news
about PING

@radp Like I said, Apple Cured Cancer

@radp - what they announcing?

with BLOOM

oh Ping

2:14 PM
Yeah, PING will BLOOM when you get PINGed

@AidenBell (Points to sidebar) They bought jQuery, of course

@AidenBell Beatles songs in iTunes.

Then they used $.cureCancer

Supposedly they worked out a deal with EMI.

The monitor gamma will get gently raised to 5 whenever you get pinged.

2:15 PM

@PopularDemand You'd think those Beatles Fans would've gotten their songs from elsewhere already

Worst. Logo. Ever
Who fired apple's lead design?

and the always-on iTunes icon will shine with joy above the left half of the secreen until you give the Ping some attention

@AidenBell I've been slightly sick of Apple's design for a while now

by attention I mean re-PINGing at least 10 other people
This will lead to more widespread PING adoption!
because the software will have more JOY!

2:16 PM
What the icosahedrons is Ping?

The semi-shadow gradient is so overused...
Also, div in anchors on their product and homepages = boo

@PopularDemand one of the top new features of ITUNES, right after the semaphore icons.

Also, what's up with the RiscOS/Acorn background

I've never used iTunes. Maybe once, as a music player, years ago.

2:17 PM
@PopularDemand =O

I use the bit torrent mainly, beats iTunes on price ... tough market

I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't know what Ping was @Popular

I will absolutely not touch iTunes, even with a 10 ft. pole

@PopularDemand You tinkerer. points accusingly

@radp I don't know what that means, and I suspect that I'd be glad about that fact if I learned what it meant. EDIT: Retracted, based on your edit. (But I still don't quite see how it fits in context.)

2:19 PM
Tinkerer: See 'English Garden Shed'

@PopularDemand Isn't it the label Jobs puts on people who don't want to use iFoo stuff The Way Jobs Said?

@radp What makes you think I'd know that?
Given that I just said I don't use iTunes?

@PopularDemand I don't use iTunes either, for the record

@radp I thought he just called them "unbelievers"
Or more poignantly, heretics

@radp The point is, I'm Apple-stupid, and need you to use small words.

2:22 PM
Wait, this thing doesn't support Simple English Wiki? Geesh...

@YiJiang Heh. That's an explanation of Jobs himself, though, not "tinkerer."
Fine, I'll look it up myself.

@PopularDemand to tinker (third-person singular simple present tinkers, present participle tinkering, simple past and past participle tinkered): to fiddle with something in an attempt to fix, mend or improve it, especially in an experimental or unskilled manner

@radp Yes, I know that.

@YiJiang alert @balpha that you want support, probably in the Chat Feedback room

@PopularDemand tinker-er

2:24 PM
But what does it mean in context?

@TheUnhandledException It would be a new way to insult people, linking to Simple English, hee

5 mins ago, by radp
@PopularDemand Isn't it the label Jobs puts on people who don't want to use iFoo stuff The Way Jobs Said?

You called me a tinkerer because I don't use iTunes, which makes little sense given the definition there.
I'm not reverse-engineering iTunes, I just don't have anything to do with it at all.

@radp Nah, he calls them heretics and wants to burn them on a stake

@PopularDemand because you're an infidel/heretic/tinkerer

2:26 PM
Googling "Steve Jobs 'tinkerer'" and "Apple 'tinkerer'" had no useful results, at least on the first page, and I don't care enough.
"Infidel" and "heretic" are somewhat similar, but "tinkerer" is not like the other two.
I remain confused.

tinkerer → don't want to use iFoo stuff The Way Jobs Said → heretic

@PopularDemand - Tinkerer, Heretic, Pimp, Programmer ... semantics.
2
wonder if I could attain all-visible-starred-messages

@AidenBell You can only use the "semantics" reason when the terms in question are similar. These terms are not similar.

@PopularDemand - Semantics.

@PopularDemand You cannot have an in context explanation, then complain that things are not similar out of context

2:28 PM
I don't use iFoo stuff at all.

@PopularDemand They are! Like to-meh-to, to-ma-to, yeah?

@radp Sure I can, if the context in question is nonsensical.

@PopularDemand It's incomprehensible, to you. YiJ and Aiden are onto what I'm saying ;)
and that's because you don't follow enough IT news.

Semantic Pedantics

@radp Only those who have suffered the indignity of using iTunes on Windows would, I suppose

2:30 PM
@YiJiang I'm trying to delay that moment

And stop calling me YiJ, Not a Real Word, yes?

@YiJiang Since I got told off for having written "Yi Jang" I decided to get away with just the first three letters :(
They're enough for highlighting purposes.
Also, camel case.

@radp Lazy bum! You're not using @ there, so what's the point?

@YiJiang I was going to highlight you, then I decided I wouldn't.

Q: Jeff, you built the tower of Babylon and now you get punished?

Itay MoavSo, all over the world, the leading web technologies (Google,Facebook etc) are trying to unit all ways of communication under one Umbrella, everyone talks to everybody in the same place (and provide good filtering mechanizems). Stackoverflow was the same at the beginning, one place to do them all...

Biblical? Too biblical?
Can anybody with enough knowledge of the Bible provide a good response?
I mean, "You'll get zapped by God" doesn't seem like a good premise for an argument

2:37 PM
I am not a religious man @YiJiang, so I don't know what to say :-)
Personally I wouldn't focus on that part of it

What @TheUnhandledException said. The formatting of the post bothers me much more than the content.
Mostly because I can't force myself to look at it long enough to read the content.

Are you editing @PopularDemand?

@TheUnhandledException Not yet, having an impromptu team meeting right now.

Yeah I have a morning deadline. If nobody's edited in an hour I will clean up

@PopularDemand Yeah, for some reason he decided that he doesn't like the <p> tag
Which is weird, since he's a 5k user on SO. Surely he'd know how this Markdown thingadongdong work?

2:41 PM
You'd be surprised @YiJiang

@YiJiang The biblical allusion is only tangential to the main thrust of the question, which is... I'm not sure :)

@Benjol I know, but it's the funnies part of his argument, yes?
Without providing any hard evidence, but rather relying on Biblical references

What I don't get is that the Tower of Bablyon was God inflicting people with different languages because they were getting on too well (or something like that), whereas if I understand correctly he is accusing Jeff of doing it himself... weird logic

Cleaned up @Popular

Ahh, whitespace. Thanks Josh :)

2:46 PM
It's a horrible idea and when I get another break I will answer as such

@TheUnhandledException Thank you.

Sure @Benjol

@Benjol We should start inserting messages along the lines of printf("Use whitespace, for crying out loud!"); in edited posts, except written in whitespace language rather than C.

Good start @radp
I think there's more to the answer but that's a start

@TheUnhandledException What would you add?

2:48 PM
> So, while you have good community, it is not more then 10-20 people per forum
That's totally wrong!

> Your traffic points aren't substantiated by facts, so I won't address them. Here, have some facts. How many users are there on your forum?

I think you're reading him backwards

> I need to ask some questions in Server Fault, which no one wants to answer without a bounty -- acceptable, I just can't accumulate enough points over there, again, the overall effect is loss of knowledge (I do get my answers else where). Why shouldn't points be transferable, at least for this purpose between sites?

I don't use SF so I can't say.

I think what he's saying is that the forum he quotes was rubbish because there were only a few users because it was split by subject area

2:49 PM
I get great answers from SF without bounties
And points should not be transferrable
I would write these out in full argument form, if I had time, I assume you know why points shouldn't be transferrable :-)
but the main point is, his view of what SO should be is incorrect, and you hit that point @radp, so +1

I added a bit about the reputation transferring
making it sound like what he's asking for already is there :P

Took a little longer than expected, but here it is

@YiJiang -1, your name starts with the letter Y

Hey there @Marc

2:58 PM
Hiya

I wonder why @rchern always seems to be here
Does she never turn off her computer?

she's busy parsing HTML with Regex

HAHAHA
It's like me, I keep my laptop always signed in
and now, XMPP also
Hey @balpha, how are you doing?

@YiJiang Wow.

doing good. stack overflow has bagels

3:03 PM
Yum!
And Lox?

and bacon dolls that talk

@balpha You actually bought a My First Bacon?!

my ears are ringing (;

@PopularDemand two

<strike>Is it</strike>Are they as amazing as advertised?

3:04 PM
@rchern Ah... summoned by the smell of bacon, eh?

hehe
either that or the nick alert (;

@PopularDemand it says "I'm bacon." can't get more amazing than that

@Jin should be here too, then

@rchern If your ears are ringing because of that, turn down the volume on your speakers.

oy

3:06 PM
@rchern If I do this a few more times then she should go deaf

@balpha, how's NY?

a little crazy

Woo hoo, binary reputation!

Although that probably means she has jumbo jet engines for speakers

3:06 PM
Why is Twitter so slow.

@radp why is water so wet?

@balpha Only a little? That's disappointing.

@balpha It's composed mostly of water.

I love My First Bacon http://twitpic.com/376tfq

@balpha Did you see my message re: the Tunes room?

3:08 PM
It's funny how the chat system allows you to randomly spam people, you know, like this
:123432 Hello world!

@Fosco Bah. Bacon doesn't come from the heart. Ends up there, though.

@TheUnhandledException ah yeah, I can unfreeze it
nobody's been using it

Thanks. I should have been using it more :-)

@PopularDemand Explains the heart attacks and high blood pressure

3:09 PM
It's such a great idea, I don't know why everyone doesn't use it!

I just regret reading:
A hot dog (frankfurter, wiener) is a moist sausage of soft, even texture and flavor, often made from meat slurry, typically beef and pork, though some recent varieties substitute chicken or turkey. Most types are fully cooked, cured or smoked. Hot dogs are most often served hot in hot dog buns, which are special soft, sliced rolls. They may be garnished with mustard, ketchup, onion, mayonnaise, relish, cheese, bacon, chili or sauerkraut. Some hot dogs are bland, while others are more highly seasoned. History Claims about hot dog invention are difficult to assess, as stories assert t...
"Meat slurry"

Now that I have XMPP write support working I can script iTunes to post to the Tunes room automatically ;-)

@AidenBell Yeah, you can never un-see that.

@PopularDemand - I still munched 3 this morning

@TheUnhandledException Oh wow... but doesn't iTunes provide RSS feeds?

3:10 PM
Hmmmm Spinal Cord

@AidenBell THREE?!?!

And the bits that aren't weird meat are nitrates and sodium. At least, the mass production kind you get in the US.

Yahoo pipes can handle the rest

@TheUnhandledException Not sure

3:11 PM
last.fm probably does

There's always Yahoo Pipes if you need a site to be turned into a feed

@PopularDemand - The Mechanically recovered meat article is grim reading. High pressure blasting of bone through a mesh
@Fosco - What of it lol

@AidenBell That's a lot of meat slurry.

@Fosco - Yep, I could taste the CNS

@AidenBell Well there ain't no such thing as free lunch, how do you think they get them so cheap?

3:12 PM
@AidenBell Well, that's why they say sausage lovers shouldn't visit sausage factories.

@AidenBell It looks like an earthworm tapping the end of the hot dog

@PopularDemand - Who you calling a sausage lover lol

@AidenBell That might be the saving grace of hot dogs; if CNS material is nutritious but rarely eaten, hot dogs could be a good vehicle. But it's unlikely that the benefit outweighs the cost.

so anything interesting on this lovely morning of note?

3:14 PM
@YiJiang or a parasitic worm...

@drachenstern It's late night here, but otherwise, nah

@PopularDemand - I'm all for it, providing no bovine spine ends up in there
But even with regulation, I wouldn't bet on it

@TheUnhandledException Depending on how much you want the person eating that to throw up, sure!

I have seen some documentaries that will make you scream

I'm watching the jQuery summit. Maybe now I can really learn it instead of fudging my way through pretending I know it! (;

3:15 PM
Now, if you will all excuse me, I must pander to the extreme slowness of the PayPal Sandbox

@AidenBell Yeah, it's a human-made product, so it'll never be perfect. People are always disgusted to hear about the regulations governing the amount of rat feces allowable per pound of beef, but what can you do?

@rchern So erh... what do you know and what do you want to know?

/me hates ultra last minute super urgent client requests

A little, A lot?

What happened to the RSS button on Twitter? :/

3:17 PM
@PopularDemand - When I was little I read a book intended for food safety officers as it was lying around. I can think of little else that will mess a 6 year old up than that.

@radp I still see it, why?

@TheUnhandledException One wonders why they weren't super urgent when you still had reasonable time for them. Silly clients... "We absolutely must have this feature that we didn't find important enough to mention until right this second" shakes head
2

Only @radp to knock off the star-board perch now!

@AidenBell That is... I don't know that to say

@AidenBell Sorry, but some of us have portrait-orientation monitors.

3:19 PM
@PopularDemand - Good point.

Nine starred messages, not including the pinned one on top.

status-norepro

Damn ... my dreams of starry domination dashed

balpha, Tim, @Aiden, @Aiden, radp, Tim Stone, @Aiden, Michael Mrozek, The Unhandled Exception, @Aiden

@radp - Slap some @ in there and we have a party

3:20 PM
PARTAY!
2

@AidenBell done

One man party ... great. Just like my birthday.

Minecraft!
..What I suspect will be my distraction of choice during this weekly teleconference.

<3 Minecraft

@TimStone - If you work from home ... beware answering Skype video calls forgetting it is 4:30pm and you are still in your dressing gown

3:22 PM
@TimStone what no solitaire? :p

For those who aren't in the loop....
We have our own server (I host it) and at-least-daily updated google map viewer.

@AidenBell Hahahah ;)
@drachenstern That's not quite distracting enough :P

I generally speaking can almost never answer questions after, say, noon, since Nick comes online around then

@Fosco Ah, very nice, I'll have to check it out. :)

Brant is building the gaming.SE ask-a-question mothership.. pixel for pixel.

3:24 PM
@YiJiang you could always become @Johnson personal coder :p

@drachenstern Haha.... sigh... seen far too many of those, ah

@YiJiang I meant him in particular. Doesn't it seem he has spent zero hours learning javascript before trying to write the first line of code?
and then to top it all off, is learning jquery at the same time.

@drachenstern He's not the only one. Really.

@YiJiang I know, but I see him most often when I'm on. It saddens me the number of people that are at that level :(

I like the new TLD for Columbia... .co, the last 2 letters in my name. If it wasn't $30 for each domain, I'd have a bunch of them... so far I've got: iamfos.co

3:30 PM
@drachenstern I've told someone off in a comment today to stop copy n' pasting code and actually learn Javascript

that's awesome @Fos.co!

@YiJiang Why? You can wait for them to set up those insecure gambling websites, sign up for a few accounts and make dozens! Hundreds, even!

@Fosco - too bad fos.co isn't available ... hello@fos.co would have been a great email

ty.. they have the 2 and 3 letter domains restricted =\.. i emailed them directly.

3:32 PM
they may open some up at a later date. I will keep asking, because I want fos.co really bad.. it would be an epic win.

for an epic dork like myself.

m-fos.co?

@YiJiang yeah I've started to get rude in some of my posts too

Anyone know if MySQL b-tree searches on char() fields are forward or backward searching?

3:34 PM
@drachenstern To people you've seen before?

ie char[0] is the first node in the search?

This guy might have been Welbog in disguise

@PopularDemand yeah even then.

@YiJiang tons of people I have never seen are streaking past me on SO ... depressing

3:35 PM
@drachenstern I was thinking "only then" might be better.

Who is this Welbog and why does he hate my FHC?

@AidenBell @鱼. (@Yu, you know...? Never mind)

@PopularDemand nah, I've come across some smug 100krep+ folks and don't have a problem mouthing off to them when they're being useless. Otherwise I do try and give them a hand before I tell them off. I'm normally pretty patient, but some days ... watch out I guess.
Especially like if I quote MSDN and then they proceed to tell me repeatedly that I'm wrong. (or api.jquery.com or whatever) That sort of thing really gets my goat

anyone have any thoughts on Boxee?

So it looks like it's finally here

3:44 PM

Q: Sequential UID generation for MySQL Char() or other Field

Aiden BellHi All, Tried Googling but: Question: Best way to externally generate Sequential UID values for a MySQL field which must be representable as a string. Reason: Generic UUID-ish values for in-order inserts for performance of writes and date prefixing for read speed when searching the index from ...

Amazingly I now have less desire to remember this day forever than before this announcement

@YiJiang wow, finally

@YiJiang I was going to say the same thing. :P

@YiJiang Who are those guys?

3:45 PM
I'm thinking of the legal wrangling, I'm impressed they finally decided to allow it

Woo! Now we can re-buy Beatles content for the eleventy-billionth time!

@drachenstern What, Apple vs. Apple? :P

@AidenBell hmmmm so you're going to use indexing to speed it up right?
@YiJiang yeah um no. There was a huge controversy for some reason over they couldn't/wouldn't put the beatles on the store

@drachenstern - yes

Ok, this conference is a wash. Presenter just said jQuery is not a magic bullet. What lies!
5

3:46 PM
@YiJiang I really wasn't that concerned about it...

Hence trying to find a sequential ordering using timestamps

hehe (;

@rchern lol, sorry @rchern for your loss (of time)
@AidenBell that's what people are going to think you're avoiding, I bet

@rchern Don't they know it can cure cancer‽

@drachenstern - question clarified

3:48 PM
@TimStone seriously!

@drachenstern "Yeah erm... no" Putting your thoughts directly into the post wasn't such a good idea, eh?

@YiJiang why did you have to edit it?
original:

@rchern shakes head For shame, for shame.

user image
2

@YiJiang the Apple vs Apple... yeah um no. :p

3:49 PM
@radp PONG

I never heard that there was an internal issue

@radp Social networking with the dead Beatles member is really great, eh?

} catch( Exception $e ) {

lol, nice
ok, gone again, tty(a'll)l
