4:12 PM
Hey there @George

@TheUnhandledException Hey, hey.
Anything exciting going on today?

@GeorgeMarian The Beatles are now available on iTunes. Apparently that's so exciting we're supposed to never forget that it happened today.
But otherwise I imagine it's fairly typical around here. :P

@TimStone LOL I think it made the NY Times. =/

@George not here, just a metric ton of work for me

Oh right, and @rchern heard someone say that jQuery wasn't a magic bullet, so I guess if you find heresy exciting, there's that too.

4:17 PM
@TheUnhandledException Well, that's good...job security and all that. ;)

ROFLOL
True true @George

@TimStone LOL

That reminds me, just to mention I'm monitoring via XMPP, so to get my attention @TheUnhandledException me

That said, jQuery is pretty cool.

(With the full TheUnhandledException. @The won't work)

4:18 PM
Hmm, I'm definitely supposed to be in a teleconference right now.

heh, you sound excited about that

@TimStone Well, what are you doing here, then? Shut your modem down and get to it!

Ah good, it finally started. (We're 18 minutes late already. My plan is to play Minecraft during it. :P)

Addicted @Tim? :-)

@PopularDemand It's on DimDim, so I need to be connected.

4:20 PM
@TimStone Never mind.

We dropped DimDim
@PopularDemand Odd, I didn't receive this message via XMPP

@TheUnhandledException Oh, not a fan?

@PopularDemand breaks my software yet again! ;-)
It never worked right for us @Tim
Always had huge latency

@TheUnhandledException #4vtaot9ac$FKLJKLATs94t9stvWEtvw4

Sorry that one worked @Pop

4:22 PM
@TheUnhandledException Oh, that sucks. It seems to work OK for our purposes, but we don't use it hardcore or anything, heh.

@TheUnhandledException Oh yeah? How do you know it matches what's on my end?

We use webinars heavily for training new customers on how to use our admin, CMS and whatnot
@Popular I don't, I just know it matches what Chrome shows on my laptop :-)

Ah, I see. :)

@TheUnhandledException Psh. My tricks are far more elaborate than that.

I should know that by now ;-)

4:24 PM
Since all of our customers are bigger than we are, whenever we have to do meetings with them they all have their own choice in conferencing software anyway. :P

ah ha :-) We're bigger than some of our customers but as a hosting vendor we standardize everything, so even with customers who are bigger than us we follow set policies as if we were a much larger company (which I hope we will be some day :-) )

Any one here use (or have used) Desktop Drapes? Does it seem a touch wonky? Are there any good alternatives? I'm almost considering writing my own script cycle wallpapers. At least, I know it'll work the way I want it to work. :)

What is it @george?

@TheUnhandledException A wallpaper cycler.

Must be a windows thing. I cycle desktop background uisng OS X's built in tools
has a sweet crossfade and everything XD

4:31 PM
I'm on Ubuntu. :)
@TheUnhandledException Of course, it does. :)

And Ubuntu doesn't have a built in wallpaper cycler?
odd
/me dodges rotten fruit being thrown his way

@TheUnhandledException It does, right? I'm pretty sure it at least have on built in

Drapes just seems wonky. It never seems to pick-up new wallpapers on its own. It fails to start w/ the system. And, it seems less than random, though that's likely just my perception.

Maybe it should be using rand()*rand() instead of just rand()
;-)

@TheUnhandledException Heh, yes. That'll likely be one of the next steps. I just figured there was a good chance that one of you use linux and all that. :)
@TheUnhandledException LOL

Q: How do I create a desktop wallpaper slideshow?

David SiegelIn my Appearance preferences, there's a desktop wallpaper slideshow with images of space. How do I create my own set of images?

@TheUnhandledException Argh, I can't ban you from chat even for that. What use is 10k?
2

@YiJiang Ah, there we go. It's been asked already. Thanks.

@PopularDemand Propose as 20k ability, of course :P

Feature request: vote-kicking
On second thought, I would probably get kicked a lot

4:36 PM
@YiJiang Heh. I don't think I can do better than my current contribution to that post.

So, should I take it as a sign that Drapes wasn't mentioned? hehe

@GeorgeMarian Hee... ubuntu.se is for lower, simpler stuff, so a lot of emphasis is put of ease of use (for the solutions, that is)

@YiJiang Drapes is pretty straight-forward and easy to use. (It just isn't up to my standards of...um...reliability, for lack of a better word.)

@GeorgeMarian Never tried it before, I was using that gnome app mentioned in the answer I think

Ironically, I've been using it for years. (Not continuously, but every time I've installed Ubuntu I also installed Drapes.)

4:44 PM
@GeorgeMarian From the looks of it Drapes haven't been updated for quite a while now

@YiJiang If it ain't broke, don't fix it? ;)
Though, it doesn't exactly seem to be not-broken. heh

@GeorgeMarian The Wheel of Progress never stops, my dear sir. Gnome is constantly changing, so why shouldn't the apps that depend on it?

@YiJiang Of course, assuming there was a material change which impacts the application. Ironically, the fact that it doesn't start-up with the system may be one issue. However, it does appear in "Startup Applications" app. heh

Uh oh, there's a little back-and-forth going on about coding conventions, hahah.

@TimStone Some excitement in the teleconference, eh?
So, CREBS looks interesting. Definitely something I'll explore, as i should create a slideshow fit for other people's eyes. heh
But, I was hoping to find something that would monitor a directory (or multiple ones), so I can just add files to it and not have to manually intervene.

4:56 PM
@GeorgeMarian Yeah. Two people were debating coding conventions, but at the end of the day I decide anyway. ;)

heh it's good to be the king! ;)

sorry, boss was talking to me
@GeorgeMarian LOL, my laptop runs Fedora, my desktop is an Apple iMac

@TheUnhandledException No love for Ubuntu?

@PopularDemand Ban me? Why would you ever do such a thing???
@GeorgeMarian I would prefer to run Ubuntu but it didn't play nice with VMware

I just installed Fedora 14 in a VM to check it out. In some ways it brings back good memories, in other ways it reminds me why Ubuntu exists. :)

5:01 PM
I used to use an Ubuntu VM for daily tasks, but I recently dropped that
@GeorgeMarian Some weekend I want to install Ubuntu on this machine and give it a try again since I'm not using VMware as much

@TheUnhandledException Ah, it seems ok in VirtualBox, though it did lead to a constant I/O load that I couldn't seem to track down. Granted, that could just be a VirtualBox issue.

Woah, I just realized my XMPP client autocompletes member names when I hit tab!
@YiJiang now I won't mistype your name anymore ;-)
@PopularDemand maybe you prefer this one? function exponentialEntropy() { return rand() * rand(); }

> "I am particularly glad to no longer be asked when the Beatles are coming to iTunes," said Ringo Starr.

@GeorgeMarian Other way around, Ubuntu as the host on this VM kept giving errors inside VMware. But this was over a year ago, probably better now. At any rate my company now has a dedicated VMware testing server so my poor old laptop can have it's load lessened :-)

@TheUnhandledException I finally broke down and went the dual-boot route when i realized that I had space from an old Ubuntu install. Unfortunately, since I'm a gamer, I can't exactly ditch Windows completely.
I still haven't found a download manager I like, though. =(

Q: Sequential UID generation for MySQL Char() or other Field

Aiden BellHi All, Tried Googling but: Question: Best way to externally generate Sequential UID values for a MySQL field which must be representable as a string. Reason: Generic UUID-ish values for in-order inserts for performance of writes and date prefixing for read speed when searching an index of the...

Come on people! Don't leave me hanging

@YiJiang LOL

Woah. Just updated to Adium 1.4.1, and the XMPP chat room is vastly improved!

did they push new code to SO rep calc? when did I You've associated your Stack Overflow and Area 51 accounts: +100 reputation ???

@AidenBell Stop advertising that question so much, it's a purrfect Tumbleweed candidate!

Now I need to make Gravitars appear via XMPP. That should be a fun challenge!

5:08 PM
@AidenBell I don't know the internals of InnoDB enough to comment

@TheUnhandledException Now now, don't get too ambitious

I can do it! I'm sure I can

@AidenBell Great question, but I don't expect that will garner answers very quickly.

If I can find the time...

@TheUnhandledException Are you writing your own XMPP client for chat?

5:09 PM
Yup:

Ah, a sucker for pain, eh? ;)

A: Offer an XMPP method for chat

The Unhandled ExceptionUPDATE 2010-11-14: My XMPP Bridge now has write support, albeit very crudely built. In addition, I just got the user list partially working, rich text messages now work almost flawlessly and the code is fairly stable. It was running for almosta whole week, 24 hours a day last week. (I forgot what...

@GeorgeMarian Actually it's been a fun project
It works pretty well, been using it all day
you can joing the Jabber/XMPP room: the_tavern@msochat.smart-safe-secure.com using an Jabber account, GMail, etc
Damn, more typos I can't edit via XMPP. I must implement an edit command somehow!

@GeorgeMarian What's wrong with wget? :)

@TheUnhandledException Very nice. I've been looking for a non-web-browser solution for chat!

Well, there's aria2c too if you need concurrent downloads.

5:13 PM
@radp wget is fine for a one-off download, but it rather sucks as a download manager. :)

It can even mix HTTP downloads and BitTorrent downloads, then seed the results :)

I'm looking for something like ReGet Deluxe, but for linux and w/o some of the issues ReGet has.

Well now you have one. It just works for MSO chat for now, but it's close to stable enough that I could run it for SO, SU and SF chats
If you have suggestions @George post them in the XMPP room

@TheUnhandledException Will do. Once I have the head to check it out. Right now, it's still to early to be doing anything involved. ;)

I hear you there :-)

5:17 PM
Maybe after I actually eat some breakfast or something. I got in the habit of napping around this time, after waking up at the crack of dawn to drop of the gf at work. But, seeing as I've been going to bed at 9 pm lately, I think it's the lack of food that's responsible for my slowdown. heh
Hmm...I should probably just eat a bowl of cereal, but bacon, eggs and a tomato sounds much more appetizing.

Q: Conversion from CW to non-CW state?

Prasoon SauravThe question is short and simple. Why can't Community Wiki posts be rolled back to non-Wiki state? P.S : Recently my post here was made CW so I was wondering if something like that(conversion from wiki to non-wiki state) could be implemented. Its merely a feature request.

@PrasoonSaurav Because that'd make unicorns cry.

@radp lol

yawns

5:48 PM
Anyone know what happened to Roger Pate?

@MichaelMyers What makes you think something happened?

@MichaelMyers He has left SO.

Gah, so he has.

Did he say anything first?

in C++ ->* Lounge on Stack Overflow Chat, 18 hours ago, by Johannes Schaub - litb
roger is really not here anymore?

5:51 PM
Has this already been discussed in the mod room that I can't reach right now? (Ping @GeorgeMarian as the most recently active mod.)

in C++ ->* Lounge on Stack Overflow Chat, yesterday, by James McNellis
@RogerPate is pulling a Neil Butterworth?

@MichaelMyers Not that I know of, let me check.

No.
We're discussing more important things there. Like fairy wings.
3

@rchern LOL
Super important stuff!

I know!

5:54 PM
Meta people are werid

@GeorgeMarian duh.

> Welcome to my domain, tzenes, where my reputation is the one that towers over yours! Ohohohoho! ♪ - Grace Note

Meta. Serius buziness.

What, was there another influx of new mods in the room?

@MichaelMyers balfast has been here for a while now, hasn't he?
(Yeah, that's the new name I'm coming up with)

5:56 PM
People with more rep on MSO than any other SE site are weird...

@MichaelMyers No, the fairy wings had nothing to do with new mods...

14.5k > any other site
Mmmhmm... the badges are misaligned. Is anyone else seeing this?

Oh. Well, we'll get the physicists there pretty soon to settle any remaining fairy-wing questions, I suppose.

Somebody changed their vertical-align again, eh?

Wait, what? Roger Pate left? Damn. :(
@YiJiang Are we talking about those damn dots?

6:00 PM
@TimStone The badges on the tags and the profile onebox
No? Hmmm... weird

So...yes.

6:03 PM
Heard that some people were talking about Minecraft in here, did you, tzenes?

I'm still playing while on my conference call. I've been very productive (in Minecraft..)

@PopularDemand I thought @tzenes here works the StarCraft shift?

@YiJiang Turn down the granularity. He's a Gaming guy.

@YiJiang You mean the fact that they're not centered vertically?

@GeorgeMarian Yeah, but floating somewhat eerily off the top
@rchern Does your conference give participants an extra pair of socks?

6:09 PM
@YiJiang I think I shook my fist about this already and then nothing happened..

@TimStone You need to spin the wheel instead

...wtf, hahah.
Ah, right. One sec.

rchern is at a conference of some sort?

@YiJiang Nope, they're not floating for me, just not centered vertically (Firefox 4.0b8pre).

6:10 PM
@YiJiang It's Jeff's fault.

@YiJiang No, it does not. ):

@rchern For those prices, it should!

@rchern Unhappy emoticon? Really? Do you want to be attending a conference where they expect you to need an emergency pair of socks?

@PopularDemand Or one where all they could give out is a lousy pair of socks? ;)
I guess, sock conventions being the obvious exception.

I suppose @TheUnhandledException would appreciate yet another pair of socks :P

6:13 PM
There's a sockpuppet joke in here somewhere, but I can't find it. And I'm not sure I want to.
Oh, @YiJiang found it.

I mean, I could do with one too

@PopularDemand It didn't say anything about needing them, just that they'd be given!

It's totally random, popping up after the list of speakers

Conferences are always unreasonably cold, extra socks would be nice.

Sorry, I headed off to lunch
Please, no. One pair of backtalking socks is enough!

6:22 PM
@TheUnhandledException We were worried sick, young man!

@PopularDemand XMPP crashed and I had no idea anyone was looking for me!

That broke it
Since it crashed I'm going to make some small changes. Anyone want to see any new rooms added? Regulator HQ maybe?
WebApps @rchern?
Oh nvm, that room's froven

@TheUnhandledException Sandbox ;)

@radp Aye aye!

People trying to break chat might as well try to break XMPP while they are at it!

@TheUnhandledException We can then attempt to break it in new and creative ways without having to mess up the transcript!

6:27 PM
@radp On second thought... ;-)
Why is the chat feedback room ID 77? Shouldn't it be ID 1? What is room ID 1 anyway?
I'm adding: sandbox, chat_feedback, regulator_headquarters, and tunes, all @msochat.smart-safe-secure.com
Any more requests?

@TheUnhandledException Can we go break it now?

Why? I imagine it's explained in the backlog somewhere, but I'm lazy

@TheUnhandledException It's private.

@MichaelMrozek Is that a question for me?

6:32 PM
@TheUnhandledException I get access denied for room 1. I'm guessing it's the Teacher's Lounge

@MichaelMrozek Why what, I'm sorry, I'm confused :-)
@YiJiang Ah ha, probably so

@YiJiang It's not, but it might be some other private room, or it's been deleted

I wonder what happens if I add it to XMPP, mwahahaha

@MichaelMrozek Deleted rooms should return 404, no?

Rooms 2-13 are Page Not Found. Room 14 is "old feedback beta."

6:33 PM
@YiJiang Oh, yes; I didn't actually try going to it
@TheUnhandledException Why are you making msochat.smart-safe-secure.com

@MichaelMrozek That's just the domain I run the XMPP component on

I wonder what would happen if we all go and knock on the doors of sinister Room No. 1

smart-safe-secure.com is my jabber server

imagines Atwood peeking out of a peephole, going "Who goes there?"

6:35 PM
Huzzah! I found a replacement for Desktop Drapes. (I guess I didn't look hard enough earlier.)

The XMPP components create subdomains, so I chose msochat. If I start a server for SO and SF, those will be sochat. and msochat.

Ah ha! I found the name of Room No. 1

XMPP Bridge back up and running. Feel free to try and break it

"modchat-during-three-day-beta"
If you click on the button it'll actually redirect you to a link with the room name slug

@YiJiang yeah, and you're not getting in there :)
but the name thing is definitely a bug

You can join it at XMPP MUC: the_one@msochat.smart-safe-secure.com ...
but posting messages results in: DEBUG: posted a message, response was: #<Net::HTTPNotFound:0x7f4713c99ee0>, data was: The room has been frozen; new messages cannot be added
Ah @balpha's returned. I have a question for you over in the XMPP room...

Is it just me, or is that a non-backwards smiley?

@rchern @GeorgeMarian What are the two of you talking about?

Sekret mod stuff. ;)

6:44 PM
@YiJiang Let's just say there are some things we'd like to see from the team while they're all together. Too good an opportunity to waste sort of thing.

@rchern This comment kind of disturbs me. :P

@TimStone Definitely does, yes. @rchern What are you hiding?

This is The Tavern and it's a public place! All discussion must be public. Get a room you two and take your "secret mod stuff" there! ;-)

@GeorgeMarian And stop loling

6:46 PM
@YiJiang I can't help it...I'm just a jovial guy....except when I'm angry, heaven help you then.

@TheUnhandledException Hrmph. I simply said that while the team was all together in NY, they should do a web-cast and put on a play for us. Images that were conjured up as a result of my comment are not my responsibility. >_<

@rchern Hahahah, wow. :P

@MichaelMrozek That's nothing. When Robert said he was in NYC, I remembered that there's a play I wanted to see, but I'm on the left coast and poor, ATM. For some reason, that reminded me of a Malcolm in the Middle episode where Malcolm is fairy a high school rendition of A Midsummer Night's Dream...
And, for some unknown reason, I then thought of Jeff in that role....

@GeorgeMarian Hey, I'd rather be the Malcolm of SO than the Reese of SO.

6:55 PM
So, yah...if you want haunting images of the SO team, there it is...
@PopularDemand Fair enough. I didn't go into that explanation when I made the original comment. :)

I'd rather see them as... Ocean's Eleven or something.

"Justice?" The Colonel was astounded. "What is justice?"
"Justice, sir –"
"That's not what justice is," the colonel jeered, and began pounding the table again with his big fat hand. "That's what Karl Marx is. I'll tell you what justice is. Justice is a knee in the gut from the floor on the chin at night sneaky with a knife brought up down on the magazine of a battleship sandbagged underhanded in the dark without a word of warning."
-- Catch 22

Frankly I don't care what they do. They should write their own script.

We do?
