Bit of good news: soon I'll be able to take a train here again
Oct 7, 2022 at 17:08, by Sonic the Anonymous Hedgehog
On a bus because the train line is shut

@Feeds Why onebox experience is key to better chat, straight from the CHATO's mouth.

6:30 AM
if anyone's down for a music exchange:

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog what caused the train line to be shut down for half a year?

@ShadowWizardChasingStars I linked to it at the time

The train here is trash, always late, always crowded, but at least they don't just shut down lines for months and years.

Oct 7, 2022 at 18:07, by Sonic the Anonymous Hedgehog
TL;DR: it's a bit difficult to operate a train line next to the ocean because of waves

Oh. Well yeah this one is "nature power" then. How did they overcome this then? Any updated article?

6:47 AM
They drained the ocean ...

I think I've seen the documentary... half life 2?

what-if.xkcd.com/53 And here's the map after the oceans drop 50 meters:
And after 2000 years of trying to hold back the sea, the Netherlands are finally high and dry. No longer living with the constant threat of a cataclysmic flood, they're free to turn their energies toward outward expansion. They immediately spread out and claim the newly-exposed land.

7:08 AM
@PM2Ring as the Dutch did back in the good old VOC times. Seen in that light we would have laughed at todays 'super powers' ...

7:19 AM
@rene We have a lot of people of Dutch ancestry here in "New Holland". ;) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_Australians

:D

There was a Dutch business traveler on the rail replacement bus I took today (the line will only be reopening for weekend trains, with weekday trains taking another two months)
Given that Interstate 5 (the highway which the line otherwise bypasses) is under perennial construction and congestion, having the line be closed was a huge problem

7:39 AM
@PM2Ring lot of Ag people moving over, cause there is abput unlimited space in Australia
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog because there are no waves on the weekend?

Looking at the Construction tab:
> Crews are installing ground anchors into the large slope between the railroad tracks and the Cyprus Shore community to prevent the slope from pushing the tracks further toward the coast. Two rows of ground anchors – 104 in row one and 116 in row two – are being drilled into bedrock deep beneath the slope.
>
> Contractors reached an important milestone in January 2023. The first row of 104 anchors has been installed and secured. Crews began excavation activities for row two in mid-January, and work is expected to continue through late March.

So they just don't work on weekends I guess
Also site times out for me

1 hour later…
9:00 AM
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog I didn't even realize that chat bypasses the 2MB thing since the chat upload feature has some other issues (no copy&paste for example - useful in some cases) but I assume it has no way to.
The 2mb limit is on SE side. The "I will make everything over 1MB unreadable by using compression algorithms that were already old in the '60" is on imgur side.

9:40 AM
@PM2Ring We don't need sea levels to drop for that. See also 'Flevoland' :P

1 hour later…
10:58 AM
23 messages moved to Chimney

11:23 AM
was this done using Makyen's archiver script now?
looks nice

@tripleee yup

@JourneymanGeek thanks for taking the time to set that up; much appreciated!

11:54 AM
Wow, spam on stackapps, don't think I've seen that before

oh, new script?

@Luuklag pretty low traffic, but hardly a first metasmoke.erwaysoftware.com/sites/…
now here's a pretty quiet one metasmoke.erwaysoftware.com/sites/…
and almost half by a single spammer

@Luuklag and of course I missed it ...

Hat season is over on all sites, right? People in chat are telling me to ask a question on the main site, and I want to make sure that they're not asking partly for hat-related reasons.
I can still ask if hats are involved, just want to be clear what's happening.

Sure!
Just politely

Yeah, the website says "The fun ends January 4th at 21:00 UTC." so it should be done.
I'll just have to be careful to try to explain the motivation a bit.
I suspect they might already know the answer and are getting ready to post it, but that's fine.
(Or they think they can get an answer quickly enough.)

2:15 PM
@rene ofcourse you did, I cast the final spamflag :)

@KevinB for fun...

Q: How to use Power Automate "uriQuery()" function on an url that contains special characters

SPArcheonDue to some odd circumstances I have the necessity to use uriQuery() in a Power Automate flow in order to extract the query string from an url. This works as expected in most circumstances, except when the url contains special characters like accented letters, for example http://www.example.com/p...

first part done, but I really hope you don't seriously think I will find an answer too :P

5:08 PM
@JNat another cross site spammer to the backlog, hopefully you'll get to it one day. It's fine if not, but please let us know here so that we'll stop. Thanks!
@SPArcheon you won't, it's Microsoft so it's crap.
They just didn't expect URL can ever contain anything that is not in pure English, A-Z letters.

@ShadowWizardChasingStars it is Sharepoint. So the url are influenced by End Users. While your idea is very possible, it is still very lame

5:24 PM
Recently I went to my deleted posts (which since some time fully available, but once were available only deleted in last 2 months), and was absolutely amazed by the fact I apparently had one of the most downvoted questions on Stack Overflow! I have no idea how did it happen to have that low score, I don't really remember how it accumulated
That would make a nice nomination for [notably-goofy-post] award
wait, I forgot how to make tag formatting here...
there should be a badge "absolutely good question" and related, for posts with abs(score) > 25
just imagine, it could be among BOTTOM 10 questions of Stack Overflow (6th from bottom to be precise), which is somewhat an achievement on a site with 10m+ posts

my most downvoted question is -31, with 50 downvotes

here's the score of mine

it received no downvotes prior to a year after it was posted
I'm under teh assumption most of the downvotes are revenge votes
(on mine)
can't see yours without a direct link, ;)

5:35 PM
I have a -43 on Meta.SE, does that count?

not really because meta is in another league
here it's possible to get a shower of million of votes
LMAO mine here is at -33, it's actually absolutely hilarious to read this today: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/234437/…

i mean, besides it being a silly question, i don't see why it'd be -70 unless you similarly suffered from reveng votes, just on a whole nother level
downvotes on questions are free, so it's common for revenge votes to target the first question that appears in your list

oh that was an absolute disaster, I can't stop laughing at that past me, I EVEN BOUNTIED that post which ultimately led to a downvote shower, that's like whole another level

i don't think you have enough comments to attract that many revenge votes
lol

like just imagine that, I didn't realize that back then but I actually asked an extremely dumb unclear question with fundamental misunderstanding of subject AND put a bounty on top of that which blocked users from closing and deleting, that's just perfectly magnificent

5:44 PM
mine was trying to work around an old archaic system being managed by someone unwilling to make even the simplest changes to facilitate the work i needed to do
(which is why we were trying to move away from said system in the first place)

@KevinB it's not revenge votes. It shows complete misunderstanding of how client side scripting works in web programming.
I do hope @nicael learned since then, anyhow can totally understand the downvotes, closure, and deletion. And there's nothing to be proud about in any of these.
Think I have couple of deleted questions on SO, but with "normal" negative scores. :D

@ShadowWizardChasingStars then mine is worse since I learnt nothing, would repost it again and I am quite proud of having done so.

@SPArcheon your what? SharePoint is different, people are expected to get it wrong. :P
@nicael same as posts and comments. [tag:tag-comes-here].

21 mins ago, by SPArcheon
I have a -43 on Meta.SE, does that count?

@SPArcheon oh that does not count.

5:56 PM
Never said it was on SharePoint.

@SPArcheon all your questions in non-MSE sites are about SharePoint. ;)
No?
Your name consists of SharePoint. You are a representative of SharePoint. :D

I've realized that I've lost interest in posting questions on Stack Overflow mainly because it attracted around zero attention due to my questions becoming somewhat complex, sometimes specific and narrow problems that no one wanted to solve. It's just a strange thing: an easy question gets flamed for easiness, a difficult question gets drown thanks to endless flood of "plz help my button dozent click" questions

I worked with SP for a while back in 2007-2008 and hated every moment of it. I had to hack my way through everything to get things done right. And something tells me nothing improved since then, only the opposite.

status-thanks

status-well-done
@nicael I don't understand the last part. How "plz help my button dozent click" questions related to anything?
They get nuked pretty fast on SO which is good.

6:02 PM
I mean, there's one worthy question among 1000 unworthy ones, that is an extreme example, I did essentially mean "a basic question" with these words
I have my favorite tags set to web dev and there's an endless supply of "how do I make X" with a lot of code dropped into the post, I mean almost no one asks a well-formulated question with minimal reproducible example provided
years ago when I was a kid and I was just starting with web dev, I loved answering basic questions to farm rep, now either my values have shifted, or stack overflow question quality has dropped, or both

@ShadowWizardChasingStars Does it? The actual meaning could be "Super Pony Archeon"

@SPArcheon but it's not ;)
@SPArcheon yeah that's @nic's joke

@SPArcheon I also believe that @sha's actual name is Swa Hazard
@SPArcheon sounds dangerous, though as any other german word does

6:18 PM
@nicael @ShadowWizard actual name should be shadowwiZZard as I pointed out multiple times, he still hasn't fixed the obvious typo

shawiz doward
camel case may .apply()

7:10 PM
@nicael maybe ShaZard, my name always must start with Sha. ;)
ShaZard the Hazard Wizard
@SPArcheon part of overall pony refusal.
@nicael you actually remember it, or made it up now? If the later, impressive. ;)
Used this name one winter bash, if my own memory doesn't fail me.

I do remember that xd
you used it probably in 2013

@nicael also impressive, since you were 99 years old quite a few years ago, now you're well over 100.

@ShadowWizardChasingStars Please, can you go to the Science&Fiction room and say again that you don't want to be called "wiZZard" because in your mind it relates to ponies?
I want to watch what they will do to you afterward....

@ShadowWizardChasingStars or I'm just Benzoline Bottom

You can come and clean the mess when they're done, I guess.

7:16 PM
@ShadowWizardChasingStars btw I remember how I got a comment from Jeff atwood under that answer of mine, I was so happy about that XD

@nicael actually earlier you did expose your age range, which is younger than my own. When I was a kid JavaScript didn't exist yet, I wrote Visual Basic code using a book. :D

I'm in my late teens now either way

Unless you meant "young programmer", not actually a kid (I was 10) then this place us in about same age range. ;)
@nicael so you started using SE while wearing diapers, that's more than impressive.
(age 2-3)

@ShadowWizardChasingStars 2014 is not 20 years ago mate XD
I was exactly a kid, my parents did not allow me to expose anything of my identity so I never actually told anything, but looking back, it would be actually kinda obvious by all the ridiculous things I did here
there's also a fun fact, when I registered on stack overflow in 2013 I did browse it from ebook for quite a long time which was insanely difficult, but that was because stack overflow was actually my first forum/social-network-like-thing I ever registered in my life and I was just afraid that my parents would ban me from using it
eventually I told them everything myself and they weren't angry at all but just laughed
> would ban me from using it

I mean, they didn't want me to register anywhere at that time

i mean
it's getting close to being 10 years ago
mightaswell be 20

7:27 PM
xd

@nicael I live in double speed.

"double it and give to the next person"

@nicael well you still don't expose anything about your identity and keep changing avatars to more and more odd ones. lol

currently its me on my avatar with my girlfriend (somewhat recent photo)

So sorry, I won't believe what you say about yourself because I know it won't be true. :D

7:32 PM
i'm not actually an axe

previous avatar was also me with my girlfriend actually so nothing suspicious here

or a bat symbol

@nicael pretty sure few months ago you had middle aged person as avatar and even something like "I love my family and kids" in the profile. Though until then you just was Elsa. lol

"pretty sure few months ago you had middle aged person as avatar" you're kidding right?
like you definitely are kidding

Well sadly no revisions for avatar. :(

7:33 PM
why so, we have wayback machine don't we

No, user profiles aren't indexed.
@KevinB sure you are, you can deny, but you'll always be an axe.
:P
And @nicael will always be Elsa. :D

that's it @sha or were you looking for something else?
that's all the updates in the recent years, all captured by somebody
1. the avatar with girl is my funny classmate
2. on the pink one that's me
3. on the one with beautiful sunset that's me with girlfriend

my avatar has been very consistent
same old logo that i made for myself a looong timea go

wait

7:49 PM
how is that possible tho
wat
that's downvotes you've casted?

my meta rep? yea, i earn a bunch, then it slowly dwindles

but that's because you downvote lots of answers right?

yes

impressive
I mean, where have you found so many answers to downvote, do you specifically search for them?

i just browse the homepage, which presents pretty much every question asked
meta is slow enough that you can view all of them without much effort

8:07 PM
was it ever reported that stack snippet errors are meaniglesss?
i.e it says script error instead of any specific error all the time
that's on safari on mac
in chrome everything ok
looks like not reported

8:29 PM
can anyone confirm that on safari it doesn't work properly?
afaik it never worked but I can't check with an older browser, since I have only 16.2 version
