@SPArcheon perhaps this is baked into the current tooling and privilege system? comment, flag, and close&reopen privileges are given much earlier than access to mod tools. There are fewer people who get visibility and tools for dealing with the worst problems.

@user then again, experientially, the worst problems occur much more rarely than the lower-severity problems.

5:16 AM
@user its also partially the BOFH/Eternal September problem

5:36 AM
@JourneymanGeek good thinking, but then I need a giant hamster too.
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog I rent, so not really interested in putting a whole lot of money into that.

... not what I was looking for but too perfect

6:19 AM
@Luuklag You could try 'windwokkels'?
@Luuklag But ask the landlord, don't pay for them yourself :P

@JourneymanGeek the userscript at github.com/makyen/SOCVR-UserScripts/blob/master/… appears to have a configuration for Tavern + Chimney; does that work for you?

@tripleee I guess it does?

I'm hoping it would work better with old Smokey reports and not move to Chimney when a post is not yet handled; but I'm no good with Javascript, so I can't really test it myself

@tripleee tbf, I think we have more complaints over 'remaining' spam links than cleaning them out too fast
and its very much a best effort thing

yeah, not sure what its feature set is but given how few complaints I see in SOCVR (i.e. none whatsoever) I'm hoping it would reduce them here too

also - the last complaint was over stuff I'd cleared out already, and were cached in search :D

8:13 AM
@JourneymanGeek okay not related, but somewhat related
honestly I just felt like sharing that and saw an opportunity

8:48 AM
@Catija sorry to bother you, just wanted to confirm if this is common knowledge to employees.
When uploading a picture on the network there is a 2mb limit and that everyone will realize as soon as they get the relative error message. But apparently there is also a second limit. Everything over 1mb is compressed - very poorly. Is that... a wanted behavior?
for reference:

Q: Some uploaded images get aggressively compressed; why and when?

Andras Deak -- Слава УкраїніI tried uploading a full-page screenshot of a deleted question to share with low-rep users, and I noticed that the result was barely legible. For example let's take a full-page screenshot of the XY problem FAQ page. The end result is a pixel-perfect PNG which occupies 1845833 bytes (1.85 kB or 1...

Looks like you missed the answer?
> Non-animated images over 1MB for anonymous uploads and 5MB for account holders will be lossily compressed.

@Catija Apparently it is tied to the default imgur settings, but I think you had those customized to some degree, so it is possible that you have missed that
@ShadowWizardChasingStars don't get me wrong, but it is more probable that you missed my point.

Not sure why you ping CM over this.
It's purely imgur thing, they never turned on the switch for SE account.
SE staff can't do anything about it.
@SPArcheon yeah it's annoying for me too, but sadly nothing we, or SE staff, can do.

@ShadowWizardChasingStars That is indeed the default IMGUR behavior, but SE storage is heavily customized as a result of an "ad hoc" offering. So I wanted to know if they left that setting active on purpose, if they never realized they can change that or if they can't change that. It is clearer now?

Back when Jeff made the account 10+ years ago, I'm pretty sure imgur did not compress, it was added at some later point, so "wanted behavior" isn't relevant because that behavior simply did not exist back then.

8:56 AM
I guessed that I could just have posted a question... but I am pretty sure that some "trigger happy" guy would have that closed as a dupe of Andras post (because reading a post and realizing it is a different question is kinda overrated nowadays)

@SPArcheon oof

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog not the tag, the overall behavior. And not really "meaningless", more like hopeless. IMO, better if they spend bit more time over each bug/request when reviewing and rejecting. But marking 90% as "deferred" just feels wrong to me.
They even put there really trivial things like SEDE pull request made by @rene, to handle this they don't need to even touch any code. Just approve the pull request.
In the past Nick used to do it but... no more Nick.

@user yeah... it is kinda lame to have to go out of your way to point out that your question about game lore is not about developer intent instead....

Looks like it would be deleted faster by ordinary delete votes, not enough users are active in MSE to reach 6 flags.

@ShadowWizardChasingStars flag nuked from what I can tell
nuked the user too
(I was busy.. ._.)

@JourneymanGeek yeah but 20 minutes
There used to be times where spam didn't last for even couple of minutes in MSE. ;)
@JourneymanGeek lol it's not your fault, don't expect you to monitor MSE 24/7. You're doing just fine. thumbs up

Plurals are the holy grail of SE. They fix such bugs in the speed of light.
Any other bug? Well... no.
Blank space in the inbox... filters not working.... meh, that's much less important.
lol it's just funny.

2:57 PM
@SPArcheon I don't think we have any control. As far as I'm aware, we're a unique case for how our imgur stuff works and no one else has a similar account, so we have to reach out to them to change anything.

3:39 PM
@Catija then basically the only viable "fix" would be to compress the image on SE side before uploading it to imgur. Noted, thanks for the answer.

2 hours later…
@SPArcheon and this would render the whole idea of using external host for images useless. I support the idea that SE will host the images themselves, but can't see it happening.
@tripleee flagged it hours ago, the site moderation is a joke. Spam should not stick for 6 hours.

@ShadowWizardChasingStars ? Why? The issue is that imgur compression is pure trash, but I doubt that SE can move away from that service.
So, it is easier to do the compression on SE side so that imgur skip doing its poor work

@SPArcheon imgur is trash, in all aspects. But hosting the images internally would require resources SE doesn't have, so they're stuck with what they have.

@ShadowWizardChasingStars ... but you lack some context....
see the question above, look at the answer again.

@SPArcheon well I'm 10000% certain such thing will never happen, and don't really support it myself. Adding another complex layer for little gain.

5:41 PM
SE lets you upload a 2MB file, but imgur compress anything over 1MB in a very poor way. Example: this, from post above.
becomes hard to read.
so, if SE can't change that setting, at least it could compress the image to 1MB themselves so that imgur does not introduce further loss.

@SPArcheon nope. It's simple: currently imgur handles the images, and doing everything. SE only sends either URL or raw image, and that is it. All the rest is in imgur side. You ask to split it so SE also do certain things and handling (others also asked to let us rotate, crop, etc) and have imgur only host without manipulating.
While it would be good to have, this just adds layers of possible bugs, and require way more time than I would like SE devs to spend on it.
@tripleee not spam until proven otherwise, e.g. actual spam from same user.
Worth to monitor, but not worthy of red flag currently.

@SPArcheon Uploading images on chat bypasses the 2 MB restriction; does it also bypass the compression?

When someone hovers over my avatar on a post, they'll get an expandy thingy that displays an excerpt from my profile. Is there some way I can control that excerpt? My profile on my main site is quite long, and I'd like provide something shorter in the excerpt.
I could've sworn we had this feature and a Q&A about this already but I can't find it.

@doppelgreener meta.stackexchange.com/q/104810/369802 < the summary syntax there?
Not sure if anything has changed since 2011 XD

That's it!
Thank you.

No problem.
