@Mast also ._.
(I'm looking for a workaround for the SE app notifications :D )

@JourneymanGeek If this question was tagged for review and a Feed to the URL was implemented then you could obtain the feed - meta.stackexchange.com/questions/85897/… to this URL: stackexchange.com/users/current?tab=inbox

@Rob ah so...
two issues - firstly, roadmap
Secondly - in situations like this, I try not to uh, abuse my MSE mod powers to push something like this, nor influence my fellow mods
meta.stackexchange.com/questions/321093/… to me feels like a better solution
and other apps could tap into that
The 'right' alternative to that might be to open up the firebase messaging thinggie SE still runs to other apps
but that's potentially keeping something SE might not need running longer
as opposed to a 'universal' alternative
Also, there's an API for that api.stackexchange.com/docs/notifications
Just not a good way to get it to a phone

@MetaAndrewT. so.... meta.stackexchange.com/questions/353133/… I'm wondering if its worth updating that post to include the fact that its broken on android 12 as per the comments...
just so its easier to find

4:13 AM
@JourneymanGeek I'm not entirely sure... I wanted to post a new meta question about this, but it will surely be closed as a dupe ๐Ÿ˜…

Same reason I'm not posting a new question :D

4:29 AM
I guess I'll bite, soon

5:18 AM
Will this be a chance for my first Peer Pressure badge...?

\o/
@MetaAndrewT. tbh, I'd be tempted to bounty this
especially if there's a workaround that works

a painful workaround would be reverse-engineering the app, fix/remove the reference to the 3rd-party library, recompile it, and host it somewhere ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

lol
Sounds like a lot of (very difficult) work
@MetaAndrewT. at which point an even more painful solution would be to reverse engineer what it uses to do push notifications.... and document it for a standalone app or other things....
I do wonder if SE would be open to opening that up to other apps

5:40 AM
Non real-time "push notifications" might not be that difficult since an app can query from the SE API periodically (while limited by the daily quota and backoff delay)

@MetaAndrewT. wouldn't polling take up a lot of resources?
I mean, something like a 5-10 minute check is probably enough

True, based on the max daily quota of 10000 (and if my calculation is not wrong), an app may possibly poll every 9 seconds (which is overkill).

@MetaAndrewT. wouldn't that take up a lot of battery power?
I thought the 'advantage' of push notifications was - unless there's something, the phone's not really doing much

Rob
6:46 AM
@JourneymanGeek The problem with that is that it has been deferred indefinitely, from the sounds of it mobile apps will come back before that's reconsidered - but you can upvote it and throw a bounty on that one, if you prefer. --- The one I suggested seems to have a top-upvoted answer that works, and it's ten years old; the CMs/Devs can change the status-review to deferred or denied if that's what comes of it.
That your link doesn't work on iOS and it gives those annoying mini-popups asking if you want notifications that you never thought of or asked for is also a non-starter.

I didn't realize it until now, but is it only me, or does the profile picture on the Top Barโ„ข looks very rene blurry now?

:D

7:14 AM
yeah, something changed, but I'll report it later if I remember...

I can't tell. I don't have a known good example

7:38 AM
@MetaAndrewT. looking fine, it's the 48x48 thumbnail
hmm forgot image onebox strip querystring
ohh I see, it's 24x24 in the CSS, so the browser is forced to shrink it, losing quality in the process.
That's pity since there's also 24x24 version available. So.... maybe they used to take this one then changed to the 48, which is the bug.
@Mast weird. :(

Rob
7:57 AM
@rene How is this:
Seems to be the same, with the opposite bokeh applied:

Hey you unveil @rene :P

@Rob looks familiar ;)

Rob
8:27 AM
@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 There's a song for that.

8:44 AM
4 messages moved to Chimney
102 messages moved to Chimney

1 hour later…
10:02 AM
@Rob The apps aren't coming back so - \o/
And it was changed from declined to deferred unprompted

1 hour later…
11:17 AM
> eventually look at web notifications,
Can take 6-8 years, literally.

2 hours later…
Rob
1:20 PM
@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 Then all will be revealed. ๐Ÿ”ฎ

1:41 PM
@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 Uh yes
which is why the app breaking is annoying
Even if its a dead horse, there's no other horse
+ anyone else still on the app is gradually going to lose access as they upgrade their phones or their phones get updated

2:00 PM
@JourneymanGeek no doubt, I do feel sorry for your loss. :/
!!/revive android app

@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 No such command 'review'.
@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 No such command 'revive'.

@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 and to an extent, there's probably people using it unaware its finally dead
not just nailed to its perch

@JourneymanGeek yeah that's just sad.
Ideally, SE would place a big banner in the app declaring its new state and asking people to check the mobile web instead.
(as the developer last task in the app)

uh
They can't
from what I understand they don't have any ability to actually post updated versions
And apparently they were looking at doing a code dump and that isn't happening either
There's an alternate app that does most functionality I dare say better than the old app, except notifications

2:06 PM
@JourneymanGeek yeah too late now, was talking about what should have been done, instead of just kicking out the only developer.

@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 Its... more complicated than that

@JourneymanGeek doubt it, but meh doesn't really matter.
Water under the bridge....

@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 -You do remember what happened to poor Kasra before that right?

@JourneymanGeek well yes, but still looks like SE could keep him if they only wanted to.
Or, you know, bring... a new developer? lol
It's something companies do.

@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 I think they stopped development long before he left
@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 Frankly at this point - I don't think they have the appetite for a new app

2:09 PM
@JourneymanGeek active development, sure. But still, they could bring someone to tie the loose ends, add such a banner as I mentioned above.

and the alternatives right now are open source and better
@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 I don't think they have access to the account associated with the app ๐Ÿ˜…
Someone in the past messed up a transition so bad, or put things on hold so long, no one likely remembers how to do it

@JourneymanGeek now? Of course not. But again, talking all this time about the past, what ideally could have been done better.
just idle ranting. :D

@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 uh, That would be a very long depressing book
Probably making War and Peace looking like a little golden book

Rob
@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 Just look at the "User Agent", if it's the app serve them a toast.

@JourneymanGeek LOL

2:11 PM
Hence looking at forward looking suggestions :D

@Rob cake is better

I'd say opening up the mechanism the official app uses to do notifications would be handy
there's really nice FOSS alternate apps around after all

Rob
@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 They can't update the app, that's been discussed already, even if they could it's against the CoC:

@Rob against the COC... how?

2:18 PM
Still not getting it

@JourneymanGeek think he means the app "went toast" but then I said cake.

And throwing cake on one's face isn't very friendly. ;)
unless of course I do it.
throwing a cake on @M.A.R.'s face
Here. :P
Well @Rob might have meant to smear a cake, but I'm not fan of smearing.
Time for the afternoon snack, this time cereals with banana cream.
(flavor only, no shred of real banana in there of course.)

Ah the ghost of Gros Michel

Rob
3:11 PM
@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 Banana cream pie works almost as good as cake, but not as heavy and no candles.

3:43 PM
@Rob oh, no pie.

Rob
4:34 PM
@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 Could have been you: youtu.be/R8sBGeJdihE

@Glorfindel Have you considered extending the pronoun script to somehow take pronouns from main site profiles into chat? For example, if nothing is listed in a user's chat profile, then scraping their parent site's profile for any listed pronouns?
