I don't know about you but for most people "chill" is as good as "calm down" when it comes to calming people down

@AndrasDeak True... 'Do you have to be this aggressive?' 'No, actually I should probably be much, much more aggressive'
Still.
I can't dig into it right now and I wasn't the one to do it in the first place, making me point that out twice is a dangerous pasttime.

@Tinkeringbell I usually find it more practical to moderate actions, not emotions
Not that you asked for tips :P
For what it's worth moderation is why I rarely come to the tavern

@HostileForksaysdonttrustSE I'm at my computer and I can see the message that was flag removed and it seems very valid. Learn from that, move on. There's no reason to keep banging on about it.

@AndrasDeak See the quotes ;) it's a joke.
Thought it might be more well known

Nah, pop cultural references are lost on me

5:09 PM
tavern has been pretty chill lately

Ah, sorry then. I'll try to keep that in mind :)
Should be easy as I don't know that many either ;)
@Rubiksmoose Thanks for looking into it :)
@Magisch If people are left speechless... Yeah :P
That happens ;)

this week's crisis just hasn't happened yet

@Tinkeringbell No problem :)

@user400654 I forget to bring yarn on this train ride. How's that?

yikes
the software dev job market in germany is in a sorry state

5:19 PM
@Magisch Looking for something new?

All the twicklung?

not really
but the company I work at posted a job recently
on the usual suspects, glassdoor and the like
we got zero (0) applications for the position so far
so I went looking in my area and now I know why
there are so many open jobs

Oh, like that. Yeah same here...

im gonna recommend we train some people from warehousing or something we can't pay what multinational corps pay
or rather, we can't afford the benefits they do

Training sounds like a good option then, though it carries the risk they'll walk away as soon as trained sufficiently

5:26 PM
eh, good for them
alternative is just not having anyone

we've generally taken the alternative

one day I too shall move on (but for now I'm getting decent raises and enough freedom to make staying worth it)

but our situation is a little different... there's no jobs or devs here, and we can't offer enough to get someone to want to move here
so.... yea, fun

no remote option?

nope

5:28 PM
maybe time for the suits to rethink that one

even if we allowed remote, we can't be competitive with other options that are remote

meh. remote jobs get lots of applications usually
there just aren't many (my company doesn't wanna offer it either)

we let our one other dev to remote, and that... well, didn't work out
except for that 2-3 years we had that dev, it's been just me for 11 years

Our company does near shore outsourcing with a company in hungary. It works quite well for us.
The hungarian colleagues come here on a regular basis. Language requirements are set to B2 (or B1, don't remember exactly).

5:44 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ eyyy
I suspect B2, as B1 has been recently set as our "basic level" for language certificates

No worries it works quite well for the hungarian collegues as well, the are 100% part of the team,
It's probably B2 I guess, we can communicate fairly good in German.

B2 is intermediate here
And my impression is that requirements are usually intermediate. But I haven't applied for a real job yet.

I don't believe that any C level is actually necessary to communicate with another dev.

@Magisch I'm curious how much the situation will affect the overall level of pay for software developers in Germany. Probably won't as it's easier to complain about a lack of candidates than to pay more

6:09 PM
@DisappointedinSE my guess is first will be substantial moaning about lack of qualified candidates
the reality is of course qualified candidates exist but they work at places that pay more

6:23 PM
Wow, Smokey. I know we're supposed to be welcoming to the new contributors, but how are we supposed to be welcoming to someone who behaves like that? :facepalm:

By closing and deleting the question before it gets nuked into oblivion with down votes. 1 out of 2 ain't bad I guess. :(

I mean ideally the question asking interface would have told the user about the site's expectations beforehand
and all this could have been averted

Main indicator for such "AI" should be the question title.

@Magisch Maybe. But how do you do that? Block all questions from new OPs who haven't read the Help tour? And maybe add a quiz to the end of the tour to make sure they've read & understood it...
@πάνταῥεῖ I must admit that I clicked through because of the bad title. True, that could just be a language barrier / cultural thing, and the OP doesn't realise how rude & entitled it comes across as.

6:45 PM
Pretty mutch like Gimme teh codez plz or Halp with homework needed.

7:00 PM
urgent!1!

Rob
@Magisch PayScale says that the average is €50K, but 70 seems much fairer; and far too little for me, but for some (many?) it would be OK. That's the first problem, people wondering if they should bother applying when they know the reason to do so isn't there. If you pay more than that saying so will attract some responses.

I think Monica referenced one of my comments or chat messages about here blog. That whole thing is a downer but I'm glad to see here closing that chapter. She deserves better.

> I remember somebody at the time saying something like "she's too invested in that relationship; he's just not into her". I wasn't listening. I was too into SE, even as others began to leave.

lol

7:13 PM
It was a play on her blog title and its tone. I was half-serious at the time... but it's sadly pretty accurate in retrospect.

@AndrasDeak Another good indicator, just like due tomorrow :D

@πάνταῥεῖ No, that would lead to false positives on Parenting ;)

Hmm, wait ...
Well, at least at programming, computer science or such sites.
@Tinkeringbell True that, but asking questions under pressure at SE may be never have been such a good idea :D

Today I saw a sponsored ad from SO on Facebook for the first time. It seems that they advertise Teams quite a lot.

@Rob 50k seems low to me, you can make more than that in public service positions, which generally aren't at the top in terms of salary

7:20 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ Oh, that's true :)

"We're all the way to the hospital because contractions started. But the birth was predicted for tomorrow. What should we do?

Rob
It is Euro, which is 10% more than USD. Why PayScale says that is the average I do not know, but if it is employers need to lead with "we pay" before they say "we need". I lead with "what's the severance" which makes everything clear.

@πάνταῥεῖ breathe :D

@user400654 Not every game is big enough to have a wiki
Game wikis are great, but they aren't always good for finding quick answers to specific questions
@user400654 Funnily enough, Arqade is my most active site on SE

That's even applicable for other than game wikis, but in general. Wikis can make you having a hell with research.

eh, i just prefer content to be organized/categorized rather than having to find some obscure post on a stack or forum or reddit somewhere that may or may not be out of date.
or even correct.

@user400654 As someone who contributes to wikis, they only really work for specific types of games

i really don't need to be pinged on every response, : /

Sorry
If you want examples of the questions I use Arqade for gaming.stackexchange.com/users/181240/stevoisiak?tab=questions

7:40 PM
not exactly a stack i'd want to browse from my current location

7:55 PM
I was just reading meta.stackexchange.com/a/258531/334566 which has a link to this article from 2003 about online communities. Ok, it's a bit outdated, but it contains a lot of great info that's still true today, IMHO.

8:38 PM
@PM2Ring huh. Wonder who was the author? :/
@Stevoisiak mine sweeper? ;)

@Shadow9 You joke, but there are 15 questions tagged minesweeper gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/tagged/minesweeper
111
A: Is it possible to hit a mine on first click?

jamesdlinNo, it is (normally) not possible to hit a mine on the first click in Microsoft's implementation of Minesweeper. It is pretty easy to convince yourself that it is impossible to lose on the first click. Here's a test that I do to gauge the quality of other Minesweeper implementations: Run Minesw...

Yeah, that one came up before :D

@PM2Ring Shirky has a lot of good stuff related to online collaboration and his books are a good read/not "dry" like some others
@Tinkeringbell you'd think I would have posted this ... :) meta.stackexchange.com/questions/342955/…

@curious Nah, you'd probably have written 'and' instead of use '&' ;)
But to all here: Just leave it. It's apparently a touchy enough subject.
I cleaned up those comments ;)

@curious As you might guess, I was quite impressed by that article, so I'm definitely keen on reading more of his stuff.

8:57 PM
@Tinkeringbell that's... true :)

9:52 PM
Weird, I said, "here," twice instead of, "her."

I noticed that

What a weird typo.

it's a good sign that people her are going crazy

Wonder if I accidentally activated some auto-correct feature in Chrome Canary.

try writing that message again (without sending)

9:56 PM
lol

2 hours later…
11:42 PM
> Some time ago, someone said "we relied too heavily on metrics and not what our most trusted customers were saying directly to our faces", or something along those lines.

> I would really like to find that message again.
