Q: Unicorn Meta Zoo #6: Interview with Catija

CatijaWelcome to the Unicorn Meta Zoo, a podcast by members of the Stack Exchange Community Management Team. If you want to avoid spoilers, jump straight to the audio. Participants Back in May, Jon interviewed me (Catija) while we were both in NYC for a meetup. Serendipitously, I get to share it w...

@Mithical It's Jarrod Dixon's fault.

Huh??
Jarrod was here?
Or is it one of the unicode tricks?

no, I typed in "3"

lol
Well SE devs got the real wheel of blame integrated in their private room...
wonder if it's auto triggered when a messages ends with "fault"? twitter.com/Nick_Craver/status/1220381711881646083 ;)

@πάνταῥεῖ you should rewrite what you wrote as feature request to add "on this site" again. It used to be there and removed as part of the new post notices project.
Old look of the banner ^
Clearly saying it's required on the site and it even says association bonus doesn't count.
The new post notice is indeed very confusing for non-new users.

The proposed dupe also stated that clearly. I've deleted my question now.

Stated what?
It's clear you need 10 rep on the site, the bug is in the wording of the post notice.

I am not so eager to write an FR about that.

Someone asked for that in the announcement, but it's long forgotten now so better post a new request.

@Shadow9 In the dupe it's stated that the associacion bonus doesn't count.

11:13 AM
@πάνταῥεῖ OK, so I will. At some point. ;)
@πάνταῥεῖ of course, but you said yourself "But at least the message is confusing, it rather should be" so assumed you want to, well, change the message.
Or... maybe take the quick route? @Yaakov hey, if I may ask, is it possible to change the protected question notice to something like what it used to be before? At least add "10 reputation on this site" so it won't be confusing, people with the association bonus have 101 rep and still can't answer. Thanks!

There are probably bigger problems :D

Yaakov can... multi task. ;)
He's really awesome.
And not just because he fix so many bugs. :D

So you pinged him, and maybe he notices ;)

Heck, he changed the "Departed" image in seconds.
He will notice.
And just that other devs won't feel neglected.....

@Sha You were too fast. I was about to flag R/A as well.

Also no chewing. Clowns taste funny

@JourneymanGeek most scary because you don't expect them to be scary

@Yaakov PicBot still alive too?

11:46 AM
@Shadow9 Right now the language is "Earn $RequiredRepForAnsweringProtectedQuestions$ reputation in order to answer this question. The reputation requirement helps protect this question from spam and non-answer activity." This is accurate. We are trying to minimize the words here, not adding back ("association bonus doesn't count") which is something that most users will be confused by.

man, that's a name I have not seen in a while

And I don't think that "Earn $RequiredRepForAnsweringProtectedQuestions$ reputation on this site in order" is so much clearer

@JourneymanGeek Joel?

@Shadow9 yes, very much so

classic balpha

@YaakovEllis good! You deserve to have some fun. :)

@Shadow9 quite a few are missed

11:47 AM
True ^

there are over 40 of them, I think

@Shadow9 I suspect if Aarthi was around, we'd confuse the hell out of Cat :D
(Aarthi shares my language/culture enough to be amusing/confusing :D)
also I can't remember if she spells it single A or double A :D

@YaakovEllis but consider @πάνταῥεῖ who is veteran user, and was confused by the message since he has 101 which is more than 10. This leads to confusion and annoyance, at some point. Doesn't it "override" the need in fewer words? Just the three "on this site" words are enough, no need to bring back the whole thing.
@YaakovEllis 40 what? Options for PicBot?

@Shadow9 you really think that adding "on this site" will clear up this confusion?
@Shadow9 yes

@YaakovEllis yes
hehe... that's funny ^^
Yes chain

11:51 AM
@Shadow9 Well, I wasn't that confused. It became quite clear for me when I realized I didn't earn any rep there beyond the association bonus.

@πάνταῥεῖ so you're a bad example... ;)
!!/example

@Shadow9 No such command 'example'.

:(

I believe most veteran users would realize that quickly.

12:08 PM
@ImmortalPlayer Can we allow doesn't really make a good feature request. Please state clearly what should be added as a feature (in technical or UI terms), and how and why you think this would add value to improve the SE sites. — πάντα ῥεῖ 34 secs ago

@djs glad to see you're not in the darkness anymore. ;)

feeling like poop in a shoe but dealing with it..

What changed? Someone turned the light on?
@djsmiley2kTMW warm and soft??

mummy and the oldest are out, so the youngest is currently showing me loads of board games which he 'loves' yet strangely every single one is still sealed etc ;)

@djsmiley2kTMW how old is the youngest?
My son (7) doesn't like board games, daughter (9.5) still does.... but hates to lose. :/

3
he's got to the point that he's now fun
and now he's no longer feeling ill, he's my friend :D

12:58 PM
My youngest is a daughter, turns 3 next month.
She's now into games too, but playing with her own rules. lol

hah
my daughter at 3, had so much sass.

hehe
My daughter makes a mess in the house every day, she take games out and spread them all over the place.
So it's common to find game pieces in her shoes, her brother's shoes, etc.
what happened to him, @djs? How long was he ill?
@Journeyman doesn't the have auto expiry?

@Shadow9 Not really sure

@Shadow9 just had a horrible cold, but decided that i was his worst enemy at the time

So no more farewells? :(

I do know caching is a little broken on it

posting Farewell featured farewells ;)

@Shadow9 who knows.
@Shadow9 I'll try to do right by the community as long as I'm allowed to ;)

@djsmiley2kTMW huh? Well all my kids hate my guts when I tell them "NO" on anything, then after 6-8 minutes or maximum hours.... all forgotten.

oh no, this was with anything
he wouldn't hold my hand etc

1:04 PM
So weird....

yup
but we're friends again now :D

Good! How did you earn his friendship? Flowers? ;)

ah wtf
chromecasted to the main TV
and some how, it's appearing on another TV.
HOW IS THIS HAPPENING
I genuninely don't know how this is possible
it's clearly using ARC, but I've never had it work before.

Maybe a virus
Air transferred
Just beware the TV won't sneeze

2:05 PM
@Shadow9 so...
Blue threadlocker is "normal" stuff
I used the red stuff on my kitchen tap cause my dad managed to detatch the sink despite me cranking it all the way down
I'll need a blow torch or a power tool to cut off the retaining nut to get it out :D

lol
Still, thread locker is awesome in programming, ask @rene. ;)
Unless of course you forget to unlock, then it's bye bye to your application...

2:27 PM
I figured it out lol
the tv wasn't being clever at all.

Interesting
It's notable that this gambit would only really play since the question upvote gain was unleashed to 10 instead of 5 since years. I believe there was a really conscious brain behind makeing these fine tunes in rep calculation. — πάντα ῥεῖ 36 secs ago
Suspect Shog9 did the tuning of the original screws.

@djsmiley2kTMW so what happened?

virgin media (tivo) box has youtube app
it happened to have enabled chromecasting to it, with the same name I used on the TV
so i'd hit the 'wrong' location

lol

and it was casting from the vbox, to both tv's

2:32 PM
Just careful when you watch stuff alone, to not have it shared on all TV's in the house... :P

@πάνταῥεῖ more likely Jeff

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, it was a very early change of the tuning.
Well, my comment implies that there was a tiny lack of competence to draw that rule back (whoever took that decision)

hmmm, has biology lost it's mods?
I flagged em anyway.
Just used to the speed which people like @JourneymanGeek crack down on SU with ;D

2:47 PM
@djsmiley2kTMW there's something to be said for spoons and motivation 😁

@djsmiley2kTMW some sites are now without mods at all, yes.
CEO said something about plans for mass elections.
Personally I don't believe it will happen, but meh.
@djsmiley2kTMW well it's like throwing a stone into the ocean and expecting a fish will bring it back to you. It might happen.... but highly unlikely. ;)

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

@πάνταῥεῖ you're OK?

Corona is a good beer

@djsmiley2kTMW They've been victims of the flu known as the (in-)famous big 2019 site decay?
@Shadow9 100% agree!
Regarding the victims it's quite cynical to leave comments here.

3:56 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ *takes one glance at Reddit* ...yeah they're obsessed with it.

4:25 PM
TBF I would like to see "the ads" included in the main chart. The introduction of Google ads legitimately upset a lot of people.

@Yaakov the answer was appreciated, thank you

hmmm if there's no mods, there's little point to flagging?

I was wondering how to get the Unsung Hero golden medal.
This answer says: "Only accepted answers that are at least ten days old are considered". However, [this random user](https://stackoverflow.com/users/9724750/neil) got this medal on Dec 9 without even having a single accepted answer on the preceding 10 days.
Do I misinterpret the criteria for this medal?

7:15 PM
@HeyJude The answers themselves have to be at least 10 days old, not the accept votes

8:03 PM
was there ever a proposal to remove limit on how many [featured] posts can be shown in the top-right box?
why is there a limit on them in the first place
I might post this feature-request if nothing says it's a bad idea, then we'll see if anyone says if it's a bad idea on the post itself :p

@user1306322 There was a bug report last October; three weeks ago, it was marked by design and closed as a duplicate of the general question that lists the community bulletin criteria

The more content, the less it gets noticed.

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog there are a couple things in play which I won't say right now but I'm thinking the request for change was misunderstood as a duplicate question

@user1306322 It was phrased and tagged as a bug report, so the post that explains why it's not a bug (i.e. explains the criteria for the Community Bulletin, including the fact that only two featured posts can appear) is a valid duplicate.

this is all technically correct but completely ignores the message of the post

8:19 PM
So then you can post a new feature request, linking to that previous one and how it was marked by design, and make a strong case for changing the design.

I don't know if the case needs to be stronger than there has not been a strong case for that limit in the first place

> The goal of the tag is to make the network users aware of the changes happening on Meta Stack Exchange but that is not fulfilled. Due to this the goal of addition of the tag will not be achieved.
You can expand on that, explaining why it's bad that posts are hidden.

do I really have to expand on that?
I think these words are sufficient for understanding the issue

@user1306322 There are some users who may read that text and not quite understand it or disagree with it. So yes, I'd recommend expanding on that to make it clear to them or try and get them to change their minds about it.

I mean I'm no pro at convincing people in a public setting but I just think watering it down with repetitions of the same, a la modern journalism is going to do it any good :p
ok, I'll have to think about it then, because right now I'm just too frustrated
thanks for a composed response
it's these little things, you know, they tend to get to you over time
I really gotta start spend my weekends properly, play some games or watch movies or just go out sometime

8:47 PM
Thanks!
Can you help me understand why haven't I got this medal yet? I've got 27 total accepted answers, 15 of them with 0 points, 4 of them are answers to my own questions. So 11 compatible answers, as I see it [1](https://stackoverflow.com/a/39080940/3002584), [2](https://stackoverflow.com/a/43438381/3002584), [3](https://stackoverflow.com/a/52212692/3002584), [4](https://stackoverflow.com/a/52607565/3002584), [5](https://stackoverflow.com/a/52681089/3002584), [6](https://stackoverflow.com/a/52665690/3002584), [7](https://stackoverflow.com/a/55828798/3002584), [8](https://stackoverflow.co

@HeyJude Make sure there are no line breaks in your message, or else the Markdown will not be parsed.

Argh, didn't know that and now too much time passed...

@HeyJude You've got 15 zero-score accepted answers out of 72 answers overall, which is less than 25%. As such, you don't qualify for the badge.
It's not just 25%+ of your accepted answers, it's 25%+ of your overall answers.

aka git gud at bad answers lol yolo!!

By the way, unlike many other badges, this isn't one that you're technically supposed to strive to earn by participating in a certain way. Rather, it's intended to be awarded to users in the normal course of their using the site.

Rob
8:54 PM
@Shadow9 Famous, for how it's made and used.

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog, oh, are you sure? I think that answer says otherwise: "and those answers are at least 25% of all your accepted answers."

Okay, that was my mistake. Scratch what I said.

9:19 PM
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog, any idea then? or somewhere else I could ask? I guess asking on Meta SE would be closed as duplicate

9:50 PM
@HeyJude I'd wait 24 hours in case it's simply that the badge script hasn't run and granted you the badge (badges aren't granted immediately, but by a script that runs periodically). If you've waited 24 hours but you still haven't received it, post a question with a clear link to the badge criteria and explain how you believe you've met it, and also that you've waited 24 hours.
See the general badge FAQ, the section "I met the criteria for a badge, but I didn't earn it. Should I report it?".

10:09 PM
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog, will do. Thank you very much for your time & help!
