No decent.lawyer works that cheap, how did you figure that out?
@Rob 22400/60 = 373
Rob
Rob
@Magisch how about, along with using the goal over the shortfall.
15:16
you're saying you pay more then 373$/hr for your lawyer?
the one time I had to pay a lawyer it was like 80 bucks an hour and I complained about it for a year
JAD
JAD
that might be a cultural thing
@Magisch I often wonder how horrid prices disparities must be in the US / Canada / America in general. Looking at those classic "house renovation" reality show I often see similar houses given random price ranging from 300k$ to past 1kk$ ... no real substantial differences, just zones. I guess it could be the same here
> National Average
$39/hour
USA lawyers ^
ziprecruiter.com/Salaries/How-Much-Does-a-Lawyer-Make-an-Hour no idea how accurate this is, but it makes more sense. :)
All I know, is that here were I live I could probably buy a large three floors villa with 1kk... yet in those show sometime an average smaller house manages to cost more.
@Rob I'm afraid you have been, well... robbed, by your lawyer. ;)
JAD
JAD
15:25
@Hitodama location location location
Of course anyone can say "I'm the best lawyer in the whole world, give me $10000 for one hour and you'll surely win!!1!!!!!!"
@JAD country country country.
JAD
JAD
@Hitodama subset of location :)
@Hitodama here 1 million US dollars can get you a small apartment in a big city.
JAD
JAD
@ShadowThePrincessWizard a few days ago I saw an apartment posted for €4.9M: 160m^2
(middle of Amsterdam)
15:28
@JAD yeah those are familiar prices. ;)
@ShadowThePrincessWizard I mean - we have disparities, but not at that level.
160m^2 is quite big.
JAD
JAD
@ShadowThePrincessWizard 4.9M is quite a lot too
@JAD Tel Aviv is quite the same with its prices
Central city = sky rocketting prices
@JAD I'm just happy with my place outside the local city.
15:29
@ShadowThePrincessWizard So, you pay for the added pollution?
@fbueckert outside the city.... in a field? ;)
@ShadowThePrincessWizard Small town just outside. :)
But far enough outside that internet is absolute crap.
JAD
JAD
@Hitodama or in the case of Amsterdam, you pay for the luxury of having your house ran over by hordes of tourists with no sense of private property
15:30
@ShadowThePrincessWizard Nah.
Lemme see if I can find a pic...
JAD
JAD
@fbueckert On the edge of town here :)
$1M US would buy you a one-bed apartment in central london
@JAD try living in Kyoto....
@Hitodama yup, and the luxury of having everything you need, including your work place, in a walking distance.
@JAD huh? Tourists barge into private houses??
@motosubatsu ouch

Giethoorn (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɣitɦoːrn]) is a town in the province of Overijssel, Netherlands with a population of 2,620. It is located in the municipality of Steenwijkerland, about 5 km southwest of Steenwijk. As a popular Dutch tourist destination both within Netherlands and abroad, Giethoorn is often referred to as "Dutch Venice" (Dutch: Hollands Venetië) or the "Venice of the Netherlands". == History == Giethoorn used to be a pedestrian precinct, but nowadays exceptions are made. It became locally famous, especially after 1958, when the Dutch film maker Bert Haanstra made his famous comedy...
@ShadowThePrincessWizard yep.. one of many reasons I'm glad not to live in London
@fbueckert nice! So is this a village?
@ShadowThePrincessWizard if you go around walking Kyoto streets, you will often see "No Tourist" signs because they do walk in private properties.
JAD
JAD
tourists don't realise it's not an attraction but an actual village. Walking through gardens and all that jazz
@ShadowThePrincessWizard Pretty small, yeah.
15:34
@fbueckert my 3-bed house in a somewhat less expensive town in the UK cost me $150k
@Hitodama but ordinary person from the city, who doesn't own the property, can still walk there?
@motosubatsu This one is also three bedroom. 'bout twice that, in CAD.
Rob
Rob
@ShadowThePrincessWizard I starred it for you.
@Rob thanks? :)
@fbueckert and sane prices?
@ShadowThePrincessWizard Pretty sane. My tiny house inside the city is worth more or less the same amount.
15:36
@ShadowThePrincessWizard problem is that Kyoto is basically an historical city and people live there. Many of said private house have elegant gardens, traditional architecture and so on.
People constantly walk in to try to snap pictures
So put fences, etc.
@ShadowThePrincessWizard Tourist often try to grab maiko attention hoping for a photo by pulling their obi. When the tourist lacks civility a fence isn't really going to to much.
I've been to Kyoto almost 20 years ago. It is truly a wonderful place.
yep, they actually had to start hanging "Please, do not harass the maiko" signs
15:42
apprentice geisha.
Actual geisha usually have enough experience to know how to avoid tourists in the first place
Geisha (芸者) (; Japanese: [ɡeːɕa]), geiko (芸子), or geigi (芸妓) are Japanese women who entertain through performing the ancient traditions of art, dance and singing, and are distinctively characterized by their wearing of kimono and oshiroi makeup. Contrary to popular belief, geisha are not the Eastern equivalent of a prostitute, a misconception originating in the West due to interactions with Japanese oiran (courtesans), whose traditional attire is similar to that of geisha. == Terms == The word geisha consists of two kanji, 芸 (Gei) meaning "art" and 者 (Sha) meaning "person" or "doer". The most...
So, kind of singers/performers.
Nothing is simple. :)
Any equivalent in western culture?
15:46
.... nope.
They're more like educated, multi-disciplinary entertainers that provide company and a relaxed environment
Also @Hitodama are you originally from Japan?
@Emanuele-reinsMonica-Ciriachi "provide company and a relaxed environment"- that sounds like... something I can't really write here. But reading the above link, they're not. :)
So yeah, hard to grasp this for someone unfamiliar with that culture.
@ShadowThePrincessWizard to be fair, I was quite expecting you to ask by now. Nope, not from there I fear.
But as I said before...
The rich people that funded them were sometimes their lovers, but not always. They are certainly not high-rank prostitutes.
Feb 18 '14 at 14:41, by SPArchaeologist
@ShadowWizard - would you believe me if I said that I am a tea ceremony student?
15:48
@Hitodama you seem to be familiar with their traditions/culture though.
@Hitodama oh. lol
Rob
Rob
@ShadowThePrincessWizard Supposedly creditable webpages report values varying 10x, so I don't know what to quote: lawyersmutualnc.com/blog/top-10-lawyer-hourly-rates-by-city but look at this anomaly businessinsider.com/…
How much OJ paid hourly is speculative latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1994-07-09-mn-13443-story.html but LA County paid 9 million to prosecute reference.com/government-politics/…
Rob
Rob
People guess OJ paid 2M.
@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA Hey
@ShadowThePrincessWizard sup?
15:50
@Rob well that's a bit different than Monica case. Tiny bit. ;)
Also, there were many lawyers for OJ case, and many many hours.
And extra expenses for sure.
and different sorts of cases have different rates
Rob
Rob
39 bucks/hour won't pay for a painter or plumber.
@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA all good! You?
@ShadowThePrincessWizard Not too bad.
Starting something new in a couple of weeks.
@Rob I don't need a plumber, I can ask on LifeHacks.SE! ;)

@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA job,I hope? :)
@ShadowThePrincessWizard Haha yep :-)
@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA awesome! Where?
@ShadowThePrincessWizard @ StreetEasy
@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA nice... so you'll work with that person?
15:54
@ShadowThePrincessWizard what person?
See code here ;)
Oh wait, unless it's API? Didn't look very deep. lol
Dunno. Looks like the guy is using the SE api
Anyway, good luck in the job! @amana
@ShadowThePrincessWizard Ha Thanks :-)
oh, nice... trying to add a new managed property on SharePoint now gives an error
> The settings could not be saved because of an internal error: Schema can't be modified since the application is paused.
know issue. Solution is : wait
no way to know how long.
16:05
6-8 years. Duh.
A fellow Sharepoint sufferer!
@Hit post on the new MS forum SO site.
See if it really works.
Hopefully the SharePoint project manager at Microsoft will arrive and post a reply "Thanks, we're looking into it!". :P
@amana what will you do there? If you can tell?
@ShadowThePrincessWizard Nah, they'll just fix it and go, "Huh? There's nothing wrong. What are you talking about?"
@ShadowThePrincessWizard while that could happen for the UTC date problem... this seems more like a "can't predict when the crawler will crawl" issue.
@ShadowThePrincessWizard Snr Software Engineer
16:08
@fbueckert lol we wish
@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA Signal-to-noise ratio Software Engineer? ;)
@ShadowThePrincessWizard :-P
Although Sharepoint itself is enough of a beast that it's almost never the right solution for anything.
I worked with SharePoint for year and half. shudders
(12 years ago or so)
That was even before SO, so couldn't even ask when bumping into problems.
Just had to hack my way around it.
Are the SE apps down for everybody or just me?
@Glorfindel seems down
16:18
OK, I'll open a bug report
@ShadowThePrincessWizard Even with SO, you still have to hack your way around it.
@fbueckert but now you can ask.
Just ask
don't hope to actually get a relevant answer.
But you can ask.
At least before I was getting a nice collection of tumbleweeds, now even those have been removed
What, you don't think this will help you :P?
@Hitodama Yeah; one of my last jobs, I kept having to bounty questions on Sharepoint.SE, because they weren't getting answers.
@fbueckert as the ancients used to say....
And my googling wasn't bringing up any useful information.
16:29
> Ph'nglui h' wgah'nagl llll Mcr'softh, Sh'are Phointh llll fhtagn shuggothh orr'ee
roughly translated to "In its house at Microsoft, SharePoint waits for humans souls"

As is, I've written a little app to automate permission modifications in a document library.
Can't do it by folder, because it was built to use metadata to group and organize.
@fbueckert coincidentally, just worked on a similar mess.
With the added fun being that the allocated works hours had already been wasted when I arrived on the project
and the code... a mess.
Missing supposed-to-be-done features, the ones that were there didn't work right... bad code...
missing awaits on async methods so the error were lost in the ether....
anyway, have to go for a while.
Later.
So it's gotta troll through a filter (CAML queries are their own nightmares), stop inheriting permissions, and modify them based on the request.
And that was easier than doing it all manually.
16:59
insert meme . i don't know what sharepoint is and at this point i'm too afraid to even google.
@CptEric Microsoft's answer to fledgling CMS system.
And per usual Microsoft standards, it suffers from kitchen sink syndrome.
oh, gotcha

@RobertHarvey Oh $deity... that's worse than chicks develop...
i am bothered by their requirements
for just an out of the box FSE "A degree in STEM, preferably with a high GPA from a top-tier university."
doesn't everyone have one of those?
17:42
@user400654 Does archeaology count as STEM?
i didn't bought that box of cheerios that gave them apparently.
> Expert knowledge of web development with a deep understanding of inner workings of major browsers, including how they render HTML/CSS and their Javascript runtime environment.
user102937
Because running a sex site requires that level of expertise.
am i the only one without access to chrome and firefox's source code?
that'd be a pity.
@RobertHarvey Well to be honest... it might?
@RobertHarvey streaming video reliably... you don't want buffering at the wrong time?
user102937
17:44
Heh.
user102937
OK, well I guess it doesn't matter then. Y'all can go back to your porn now.
user102937
Carry on.
You might want to report that one, I think it goes on MSO though?
17:46
Great, that would save some comment deletions!
...in the form of reactions, from the looks of it.
i am not a consumer, but i think it's legit that they require developers.
@user58 Yeah, it's what it looks like on that picture... they're on teams.
user102937
@user58 Yes, because we all apparently could use a little help expressing gratitude.
17:47
@user400654 No, it's ... actually kinda neat?
i mean, like, that's just your opinion
I wonder at what rep level it'll be available.
There's plenty of times I've wanted to say 'thanks' and only had to rely on someone knowing that an upvote was just that... and not 'I agree with this 100 %'...
agree there
It can replace both thanks and +1 comments, sounds neat.
@user58 I wonder too... voting isn't standard...
17:48
I wonder if there will be a :( too
oh what
reactions just turned up on the job ad or where them already there?
yanno for when something makes you feel sad but not downvoting sad
@CptEric Those have existed for quite a while.
that's how much i browse it XD
@CptEric I hadn't seen those before you pointed them out :P
And I just had that page open XD
@Aibobot I'm guessing that's another thing... the ones now are only for 'happy' things, and the SOS well... What's that for? If you red-flag, you can also SOS for a mod that comes by? :/
17:50
I donno
again i see nothing wrong in the job posting that could make it reportable, unless we are judging the "morality" in a religious sense of the company behind.
or their high horsed requirements
user102937
We've posted about lesser things.
@CptEric Probably not the job... but advertising it? :/
that's a scam ad though
oh you mean there is an ad about the posting?
That's what I understood?
user102937
17:53
@CptEric Last time I checked, they were offering salaries in the range of 1.5 to 2x the industry average. Maybe that's the price for selling your soul.
> Chaturbate job ads?
user102937
@CptEric Yes. They appear periodically in the right sidebar.
user102937
That's spam.
ok yeah that might be too much, but i don't know. it's still a legit company. are they explicit?
user102937
As explicit as it gets.
user102937
17:55
Live streaming of couples doing their thing. Tip jar, private shows, etc.
The job ads??
Eeewl.
yeah if the ad has those on it it must go
user102937
Yeah, no, lol. Nobody's humping in the job ads.
@RobertHarvey You looked at it!? Eeeewl.
user102937
The job ads? Of course.
17:57
XD
i should turn off my ad removal scripts for science but i fear of the many possible weird stuff that might pop up
mainly pop ups :P
Its still a job.
user102937
Anyone who's contemplating a position there really ought to look at the page first, to see what they're in for. They can always take a shower afterwards.
@JourneymanGeek Sure but... advertise it in the right side bar? I know of milder content that people didn't want to see there...
@RobertHarvey That's only making things worse. My mind is ruined for this evening.
17:59
@Tinkeringbell shrug I don't think humans curate that
and its not like someone's going to tweet at SE about it right?
I mean, I prefer kindly asking if someone does, and if someone else minds, and if perhaps this shouldn't be there?
@RobertHarvey shrugs it's a job.
user102937
Monitoring the platform to make sure it's running properly must be an interesting experience.
I used to work for the company that provides the phone lines for babestation
/me shrugs
I'll keep using Twitter for posting crochet and attracting TERFs.
18:00
@Tinkeringbell Posting it on meta ... would probably extra drama
i bet being part of the data science team behind them or pornhub must be amazing
user102937
Quality control testing?
TERFs?
I guess we can pop in a quiet word to a CM?
But we have that option
contact us? Backlogged
@CptEric Woke up to an unrealistic amount of likes on my recent project... was picked up by a circle of TERFs :/
18:01
@JourneymanGeek Childish, all of the convo
One retweeted it and the ball got rolling.
user102937
@JourneymanGeek That's why I brought it here first.
@CptEric Trans-exclusive radical feminists.
Kinda weird... whole timeline full of political crap... and a retweet of my llama :/
@RobertHarvey which is reasonable
18:01
Unless the company have done something bad like say... goDaddy
for those who don't know PH's data science do some amazing yearly statistics on their users
@CptEric Feminists with gender-critical views.
and then the designers make super cool infographs
that's the only time i visit the site, and it's tbh quite awesome.
I mean, if you care that much, tweet it to Sara asking if it's ok
meh
I actually mean seriously tweeting
not causing more drama
18:02
There is nothing offensive, offtopic, or wrong about that advert.
The "worst" it does, is have the word "sexual" on it
If you're looking for a job, which I presume you are, then you're likely over 18
user102937
@CptEric Interviewer: So where did you say your last job was again?
never be ashamed
pushes abap below the rug
@RobertHarvey I've joked about running the babestation phone lines at every interview I've had
Well a job's a job
When you can tell them you helped run 10,000 phone lines at once.
Porn runs the internet.
it pushes more development than most companies who use the internet
18:04
NSFW domain, SFW content, PH's year in review 2018 (don't click at work) : tinyurl.com/ybztgdbp
Starting to slow down these days
@CptEric can you edit and explan what it is
blocked ;p
like super blocked
@JourneymanGeek it's pornhub.
like not even "this site is blocked" banner blocked
yup. Banned here I suspect
so... like.... lots of people prob shouldn't clik at work
even if the content's fine..
18:06
But I didn't even get the banner I used to get at a certain swedish website
@JourneymanGeek Blocked in India, but can access through my U.S.-based VPN
Yaaaah
me heartie
edited a bit more
i mean, thankfully it's tinyurl, otherwise i might have lost access to this
@djsmiley2k-CoW I think I linked a screenshot of the block banner at my old ISP ;p
..... One of my devs just called a cron job a corn job

@JourneymanGeek loooooooooooool
@user58 Can't you answer the first part of your question yourself, as a Charcoal team member?
Or did you leave that recently?
reaction emojis coming to SO next year
@CptEric "I only read it for the data science". The more things change, the more they stay the same. :-)
18:23
@SonictheReinstateMonica-hog probably, if I decided to check...
I can see it already... "Why was my question downvoted? it received 5 reactions!"
@Tinkeringbell You can tell someone reacting to some crouched is a TERF? Do they manage to mention it in everything they do? [All I know about TERFs I learned from ContraPoints]
@Raedwald It's more that I never get this many likes, not in such a short timespan. Also, two new followers, I checked out their timelines (usually, it's people that crochet too and there's fun stuf... disappointment, this time).
So after that I checked out some of the likers too... they were all connected and retweeting each other and liking each other...
18:41
🙏
You're welcome
^ I want a reaction thingy for that one too
I guess 2 hours until someone proposes a :poop: reaction.
It's still titled 'new ways of saying thanks'... How does a poop say thanks?
It doesn't. But proposing it would say "I am angry with SE and want to express it in an unhelpful way that confirms all the worst assessments of MSE by SE"
We shall see.
Me, I don't think those reactions are worth the bytes it takes to record them.
18:56
@Raedwald i promise.
*notifications explode*
@Raedwald I would kinda like the idea on IPS. There's sometimes answers that are both good/useful. Instead of only accepting one, I can now personally give thanks to the people that wrote those, for example. They can see I did that too. Other people can see I did that. Anonymous votes are nice, but sometimes you don't want to be anonymous :)
That's not looking like a 'thanks'...
18:59
@user58 hmmm? No notifications for reactions.
Dr slump anyone?
Pink slime?
@Catija I was referring to the slew of comments on the meta post.
Ah.
19:01
...and apparently it's being voted to close for being only applicable to one site? Huh?
Which question?
couldn't find an english version. maybe this show didn't reach UK/US.
Do people really forget that many people can’t vote?
Sheesh. Now I've fallen into the trap of making negative predictions about how members of a group I don't like might react. Sorry about that.
19:09
so reactions will be rep-0 things?
not that i mind, just that i have no more info on it than the tweet says.
Most people, in fact. I was looking at anonymous feedback on Math earlier this morning and, in a week, there’s about the same number of attempts to vote as actual votes. Granted, most are from unregistered users but it’s possible we could allow unregistered users to react, too.
3
@Catija Eh, we didn't... I think someone asked in here if there'd be reputation privileges tied to reactions, the same as with votes?
@CptEric no rep value, correct.
So, votes for quality, reactions for everything else?
19:11
sounds useful-ish. maybe noisy in terms of data, but it's ok. probably makes more sense outside of SO
Votes are for whatever people want to use them for, realistically... but you need rep and an account to cast them. Reactions could be for everyone.
i see myself throwing a party-cone-thing-with-confetti on a particularly hillarious worldbuilding answer, but not on a COBOL question
@Catija Very interesting. I would never have guessed that SO many people not permitted to vote try to do so. I find that... encouraging.
@Catija Ah... hmmm. Why not have everyone vote?
that'd be... noisy.
19:14
because votes affect reputation...
Cheating, mostly.
as in.. vote-spam noisy
Ohh.. makes sense, all of that. I'm not the brightest mind today, don't mind me ;)
will reactions grant rep?
i guess not
@CptEric For Cobol, you need to throw punched-card chad confetti.
2
19:15
@Raedwald yeah. It’s really interesting. If you have 10k tools anywhere, you can see the stats for yourself.
@CptEric nope. I think we’re looking at badges for receiving reactions and reacting but no rep.
atleast it makes more sense here to have reactions here than in github/gitlab/bitbucket/etc
@Feeds never had a chimney. nor santa. nor a tree. sighs
@Raedwald Here's the SO info for a week: stackoverflow.com/tools/post-feedback?filter=week
The page takes a minute to load... I particularly love the "overrated" and "underrated" tabs.
This page requires more privileges
oh 10kTools. dammit.
19:21
10 k :)
everything else aside, seems like some features broke today for some IE users, just noticed a refloated 2013 question arise
i expect that to become a common problem, at least until said people move from ie
makes me remember why i prefer mobile dev. so many browsers.
as they state sometimes it's not a choice. used to work as IT and you couldn't even sneeze at some windows 7 computers without granted-from-above permissions.

If those answers don't get two upvotes the bounty won't be automatically awarded; and they're both at 0 now.
22:58
I'd upvote them before expiration, but I'm no way going to do so that much right away
I.e. I know... but well put, thanks
oh heck, I actuatlly thought it was enough just accepting, but it seems that's no longer true
hell do you say two upvotes each???? really?
An answer needs to have at least two upvotes before it becomes eligible to be automatically awarded a bounty.
No problem, I'll reset the bounty as many times as necessary. It's surplus reputation.
