Surely everything is serverless now
Well, not everything. I'm still working on a server ;)
@Bart Well, if there are no servers, then nobody's waiting, which means that I'm just waiting.
@Bart ironically? Not until we move everything to the blockchain D:
14:10
Hey!
Heyo
Was reading meta.stackexchange.com/questions/329763/… . because i just had an animated ads. and reported it here scifi.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/12691/…. Do i have to report it on the se meta question too.?
(My advice is to enable an adblocker by this point.)
2
@xdtTransform sure, just don't expect any response
@xdtTransform I would suggest it
Just so that there's a record of this
@Mithrandir well, yeah, that too
14:12
Wow that's bad. (the ad)
but that's about the third thing I have on a new build ;p
@ShadowTheDragonWizard no obvious response, maybe
but I'm sure there's probably folks who'd go "GUYS WHAT ARE WE DOING" internally
@Bart Yeah, it really makes me wonder what company hires another company to promote their company like that... Unless they just let their secretary put something together XD
(still need some polish but I've been trying to get it down to installing chocolatey, running a one liner and setting up logins...)
@Tinkeringbell if you think about it, its a cascading level of fail... ;p
from the 'artist' to whoever thought wiggling it was a good idea, to the online ad company that approved it....
And well, if its on a SE property, its going to reflect on them
I'm sure eventually someone will get a hot singles ad, get offended and ....
Yep that's bad. Can wait to have fake support and adult browser game on SO.
@JourneymanGeek, not enought twitter i guess : scifi.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/12674/…
@JourneymanGeek Oh sure... this doesn't look good at all. But considering that there's probably a company that made an add for a company, then distributed that through another company ... there's at least three levels of fail before we can blame SE ;)
14:16
@xdtTransform honestly? That might be a good thing if there's enough/right sorts of outrage
@Tinkeringbell its on their property.
@JourneymanGeek There's already a singles ad linked in the comments on the test announcement. Funny, that one also was scifi.
If I have a giant neon cheesecake art billboard...
Its going to reflect on me too
@JourneymanGeek So? My brother had friends over and one of them puked in the neighbours backyard... the puke was on their property, but they're still blaming my brother and his friends XD
@Tinkeringbell but if they let it fester its going to reflect on them
or whatever old rotting puke does
@JourneymanGeek Oh sure... But that's the whole point of the test, isn't it? To gather as many of these inappropriate ads and see how bad things are?
You need to know where the puke is before you can start cleaning.
14:19
@Tinkeringbell exactly
and for the folks who pick the ad providers to work out which ones are absolute rubbish
@Tinkeringbell there was click bate on Cooking se too. cooking.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/3563/…
(I suspect most of em...)
@xdtTransform Just report them all. Anything you see that isn't very appropriate, just report it. The experiment will be running until the end of the year according to the post, so... don't expect any quick replies but any input will likely be appreciated.
@xdtTransform also lots of calm, carefully collected examples of bad ads is probably going to have more use than lots of people ranting about stuff ;p
So its probably the best we can do as users, especially if you don't run adblock
@xdtTransform interesting enough, most animated ads on sci-fi aren't using a gif but... CSS transformations to cause the animations.
Probably SE told them "Don't use animated gif" so they found a way around.
Which is horrible.
14:30
@ShadowTheDragonWizard "Don't use the door" uses the window "don't use the window" crashes through the wall
If we have to disable ad block and spam F5 on every site just to list bad ads I feels like we need badge and reputation for it.
lol
@xdtTransform well, you're fighting the good fight
but probably good enough to link the ones you find
without looking deeper
@JourneymanGeek exactly! lol
@ShadowTheDragonWizard but its an industry designed to get attention
@xdtTransform nah, to be honest SE usually "fix" it quickly
But then it happens again.
14:34
,_, We have little LED screens with ads on the ground floor now
and they annoy me hugely
Looks like there's an algorithm that if we try to hunt the ads, then they won't appear...
A staff answer. scifi.meta.stackexchange.com/a/12692/107904 . I guess I will spend my night hunting. And see when they give up.
Break is over, back to work.
@xdtTransform who gives up?
The answer is meaningless.
@ShadowTheDragonWizard everything is meaningless
14:40
It will happen again, in a different site, at some point.
@ShadowTheDragonWizard and people need to keep reporting those things
@ShadowTheDragonWizard simply because there's really 3 alternatives.
SE let their ad provider choose what ads to put. That's the end of it, nothing we can do
@ShadowTheDragonWizard SE can pick ad providers though
and this sort of feedback could be useful
14:41
There's no good ad provider.
They're all bad, and they'll all show bad ads.
and the alternative is just taking a big dose of *uckitall and constantly complaining there's no point to complaining
which is not particularly constructive
Well I just accept the fact SE now has evil ads, and move on. :)
@ShadowTheDragonWizard They're testing, and people have been asked to report. Now imagine there are a lot of reports... that's a result.
14:42
Nothing new... many sites I visit have evil ads, we can't run away from it.
And perhaps they can contact the ad provider and say 'if you want to keep working for us, no more of this and that'.
Or perhaps they can't, and drop ads entirely.
also, these responses are coming from the ad team
@Tinkeringbell and be shut down
yanno, the folks who actually run these things
@JourneymanGeek so he'll now tell the ad provider "don't use this ad please", the ad provider will come with other animated ad.
Not with transforms, but with still pics replaced by JS timer.
14:45
@ShadowTheDragonWizard until the point where the rules are strict enough that there's no wiggleroom
@ShadowTheDragonWizard Perhaps. So... do you want to use SE with an adblocker, or not at all? :P
@JourneymanGeek hehe, we'll see. :)
So as long as SE responds, there's still a point in complaining about specific ads
And that was a pretty quick response too :)
I admire this, though they can't buy my trust again, when it comes to ads.
14:48
Which is fine
SE's been cool with adblock for... ever
and I will be yelling at SE if they start breaking adblockers ;p
(never used adblock though)
14:50
Potatos are fruits
true or false ^
They're tubers
@ShadowTheDragonWizard , You can't break my wings. I have been noticed by a staff. It was usefull and the problem will be address. I'm so pleased, I will refresh like a mad man in order to make them taste their own medicine. They will see those ads when responding to my question.
@xdtTransform I think a better question is "do you have wings?"
Yup, all ads on sci-fi site are animated for me. Netflix, Vimeo, and some local. Eww. — Shadow Wizard 38 mins ago
Ow that sucks.
This ads discussion is kinda pointless though
15:07
The most* effective ads is to use your profile picture to advertise.
*citation needed
... jinx, I got an animated ads on Anime.SE :/
@JourneymanGeek well elves were legendary and look what become of them. Agent Smith was their leader.
and it reloads another ads every 30 seconds :O
I don't need an ad blocker. \o/
and it self-destructed because it failed to load the last ads...
At this point, seeing a static Google AdMob's ads is a peaceful thing compared to those weird, animated ads...
15:34
@Feeds daily earthquake is still scarier than a rare big meteor impact...
@M.A.R. See, yet another reason to not look up to The Netherlands ;)
@MetaAndrewT. I'm using uBlock and what's all this fuss about?
oh, I'm just.. uhh... pen-testing ads on SE...
15:49
One does not pen-test a Google ad. A Google ad pen-tests you.

@Feeds Much too long, yes.

16:42
@Feeds We had a small impact last week.
user271002
Oh nice! You actually saw it or just stole a news photo?
user271002
This guy accidentally took a video:
user271002
People here first thought it was a signal flare.
16:49
Oh, awesome! I saw the news articles, but no images :(
user271002
A traffic camera in the Netherlands got it, too. (very small in the background)
Yeah, apparently many people here saw it.
17:42
@Loong DAS EVENT
I want it as a movie. RIGHT NOW.

2 hours later…
20:05
Hey @Sha
I'm looking for a good post to reference that tells people they can start over after a suspension.
"I can, but what for?"
@Loong Of course! +1
Nah.
Whatever. I don't think I'll find anything better.
20:37
@M.A.R. hmm... @Sonic posted something nice about coming back after a long forced break. Guess it can be also applied to suspensions?
@ShadowTheDragonWizard Where?
The post about anonymous edits?
@ShadowTheDragonWizard I want a kitkat now.
Don't think that post is relevant here.
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog yeah
21:06
Eeesh, I think I have to switch to royal we for the FAQ
21:49
@M.A.R. Its on the starwall ;p

UMZ (#8) is down to single digit score (9 = 17 - 8). Needs moar horse_ebooks quotes.

Nah, apparently just needs moat transcript

1 hour later…
23:28
@M.A.R. the moat has a transcript?
We have a moat?
23:54
(same user posted the same text as an answer, which IMO it should be)
@JourneymanGeek No, some users have mor moats
needs another downvote to allow 20k+ users to VTD: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/333463/…
