I'm pondering how to work it into a 'question' I'm happy with but I realised - it took nearly a full year between the initial datadump mess, which was supposed to be so SE could sell data access, to an actual product. For something that supposedly took 10% of the pre-layoff company + full management support... that feels like a very long product development cycle

Q: Is SE [going to be] selling our content for AI model training? And what exactly does "reinvest back into our communities" mean?

cocomacWired published an article titled Stack Overflow Will Charge AI Giants for Training Data. I read through it, and a few sections seemed noteworthy to me "Community platforms that fuel LLMs absolutely should be compensated for their contributions so that companies like us can reinvest back into ou...

That was last year, so it took over a year to get that moving?
Closing a contract takes time. Also, I'd wager that most likely they hadn't really started. They probably announced it so they can then start the negotiations with companies.
Asking constructive questions is hard :D
@VLAZ that kinda not really the actual question though - its an example, there's a bunch more examples of SE working on something then dropping it partway, or just taking a very long time. Its really trying to be about pointing a certain ossification or lack of agility/efficiency in doing things

@ElementsInSpace I blame evening.
I blame odding
@Petəíŕd TheDeepWizard It's Shadow Wizard Love Zelda's fault.
07:47
He is odd :D
@JourneymanGeek I mean, for the legal team to come out with a strategy like "if they ask something relevant hide, pretend you didn't hear them, and most important don't say a thing" must have take lot of research and time.
tbh that's one of the pain points, indirectly :D
I need to ask a question about a thorny topic in a constructive way :D
@SPArcheon I suspect its more a general ... disorganisation than anything else
08:05
@JourneymanGeek Not sure, I don't believe random disorganization can produce such a precise pursuit of "Nemo tenetur se detegere"
I didn't say random :D
But I know I can't be more precise from the outside, and sometimes I'm not sure about people on the inside either :D
@JourneymanGeek so, organized disorganization?
Well - If I wanted to actually narrow it down
What's SO Inc's core business?
And do they actually know what it is? :D
@JourneymanGeek create discontent? At least, lately that seems the case.
See, if I started with that, we'd get nowhere
Even the worst manager/owner/CEO isn't intentionally trying to drive their organisation to the ground, they just are really bad at their jobs, or believe a certain course of action is correct, and lack the flexibility to think otherwise
08:22
@JourneymanGeek my pleasure. :P
@JourneymanGeek the worst manager is the manager who thinks he's the best and knows everything better than anyone else. And sadly looks like that's what SE has.
@ShadowWizardLoveZelda but perhaps not forever
Too late to replace, IMO - most chances that this was the last chance.
Meh, the world will still spin without SE.
People learn, sometimes by experience, or they find other places that they find more fulfilment in, or better pay
@JourneymanGeek you mean the users? SE managers?
Yes
:D
Its true of both
But I was talking more about management types, or generally the sort of people who try to build self interested fiefdoms
08:33
@SPArcheon The natural follow-up question (given that it’s of horse-like ilk) is: Why ain’t it got a tattoo?
@ElementsInSpace pony without a tattoo? How odd.
@ElementsInSpace If you post it, please call it "Tattoo"
call it buttscribbles
I could use the scold button, but since you probably wouldn't care and surely you don't collect them and keep count like some silly wizzard does...
I prefer to be annoying and nitpicking...
@JourneymanGeek so, I will point out that the mark is on the flank, not on the rear.
08:49
I mean properly annoying would be calling it a kewpie mark
> Kewpie Doll is a symbol of cuteness, originated in the United States. The origin of the name KPP is derived from the word "Cupid".
Cute.
ah see...
Kewpie (キユーピー, spelling kiyūpī, pronunciation kyūpī)—often misspelled kyūpī (キューピー) according to the pronunciation—is a Japanese brand of mayonnaise, and the name of the company that makes it. Kewpie is the best selling mayonnaise in Japan, and is also sold in other countries. == History == Shokuhin Kogyo Co. Ltd. 食品工業株式会社 was founded in Nakano, Tokyo in 1919 by Toichiro Nakashima. He had previously worked in the United States for three years as an intern for the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce, where he first encountered mayonnaise and the Kewpie doll that became his emblem. Originally,...
and with a few choice annoying mental links... :D
And the images for that doll showing baby butt, so guess it's very fitting. LOL
@JourneymanGeek ahh.
Also
I wonder whatever happened to this

@JourneymanGeek disappeared?
Went into the void?
It did its damage i.e. wave of low quality content, and went away, as it should.
Wonder how much money SE made from it, and if it was worth their efforts.
@JourneymanGeek My most up-voted comment is on that post.
@ElementsInSpace Good job ;)
10:29
Was there even a wave of low quality content? ._.

@Petəíŕd TheDeepWizard Why do you keep doing this when you know you are not privileged?
@DavidPostill habit maybe? Honestly, don't know. I'm still hoping I get privileged one day...
@Petəíŕd TheDeepWizard You have to ask for privileges see Privileges | Charcoal
@DavidPostill I've asked two times, but first response was "not yet", second time I didn't get any response. Guess I am just not worthy the privileges?
@Shadow even vouched for me, but rene pointed us to Charcoal HQ, where I got no answer.

@rene well, the fun commands don't need privilege anyway so less relevant. And so far @Pet didn't abuse Smokey, so I'll give him the credit and let him join the fight against spam, being in time zone which isn't USA or Europe is a benefit, sometimes many people are away when there's spam to flag. So bottom line, I vouch for him, and he can use Smokey in responsible way. I hope. ;)
@Petəíŕd TheDeepWizard Shrug.
@Petəíŕd TheDeepWizard Yeah I guess I was not responsible enough - my not-serious messages (in the time of @Shadow vouching for me) speak for themselves.
But now I'm different...
11:16
orrrr
you could just do what I do and flag things on your own based off what smokey brings up

@SPArcheon Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind (always). But don’t hold your breath, I’ve had an account on SF&F for a while now, yet I generally only make 1 post every 10 years or so.
